B When Glen Coupland was first practising yoga more than 25 years ago, it was to get active and boost his own fitness. Now, at the age of 78, Glen is a yoga teacher at five locations around Toronto, teaching 17 classes a week. And he’s built a community of students who gather weekly to practise and socialize. “It’s really nice to see people build friendships here.” he says. Nancy, 56, has been practising yoga with Coupland for about a decade, and she says why she keeps coming back is the community. She’s become friends with Coupland and her fellow students: they go cycling, meet up for tea, go hiking, even go on vacation together. “Social isolation(隔离)is the new smoking, in terms of death rate.” says Dr. Alexandra Papaioannou, director of the Geras Centre for Aging Research. “Older adults tend to have fewer social ties. As seniors leave the work force, they’re not getting that daily connection. Plus, family members may not live near and spouses(配偶)may have passed away.” she adds. A study published by the Journal of Aging Health found that loneliness and social isolation could lead to higher chances of depression and weakened thinking abilities, greater risks of heart diseases, memory loss, and a reduced quality of life. Another study found that older adults who exercised with others demonstrated better physical function and memory abilities than those who didn’t exercise at all or exercised alone. And compared with those who exercised alone, older adults who participated in group fitness had significantly better muscle strength, attention, memory and overall function. For seniors, group fitness classes are a good way of getting much-needed exercise and an opportunity to socialize. 4. What’s the main reason for Nancy to keep practising yoga with Glen Coupland? A. To become a yoga teacher. B. To improve her fitness. C. To enjoy a sense of belonging. D. To serve the community. 5. What can we learn from Dr. Alexandra Papaioannou’s words? A. Seniors living alone tend to smoke more. B. Lack of social ties causes more smoking. C. Seniors need avoid smoking to live longer. D. Social isolation is as dangerous as smoking. 6. What can we conclude from the two studies? A. Group exercise helps fight health risks. B. Group activities can cure mental diseases. C. Better physical condition can improve memory. D. Social bonds have little impact on mental health. 7. Which column of a website is the text probably taken from? A. Entertainment. B. Wellness. C. Fashion. D. Culture. C One day, there’ll be no need for you to brush your teeth by hand. Instead, a group of billions of nanoparticles(纳米粒子)could automatically do all that work for you. It would be especially life-changing for people who find it difficult or impossible to hold and move a toothbrush. Steager, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia and Hyun Koo, an inventor and dental researcher there, found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles(刷毛), a lot like the ones on a toothbrush. But these bristles shape-shift to fit whatever surface they encounter. The tooth-cleaning robot works thanks to two magnets(磁铁). One goes each side of the teeth. The nanoparticles sit in a liquid between the magnets. When the magnets are turned off, the nanoparticles move randomly in the liquid. As soon as one magnet gets turned on, the nanoparticles gather together near its center. When the researchers turn on the other magnet and turn off the first one, the nanoparticles extend outward in long, skinny bristles. When there’s a tooth in the way, these bristles can’t stretch out as far as they want. So they push against the tooth’s surface. If there’s a gap between teeth, they push into the gap. Moving the magnets makes the bristles move against and between teeth. All that motion cleans the teeth. As a bonus, the nanoparticles also have strong power to kill viruses. The new device is just a proof of concept. The researchers still need to turn it into a product that people will want to use. “There’s a lot of engineering to get from here to there, but every good idea needs to have a start.” says Steager. 8. What is special about the tooth cleaner? A. It’s water-resistant. B. It looks like a toothbrush. C. It’s appearance-changeable. D. It contains skinny bristles. 9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The bristles’ formation. B. The working principle. C. The virus-killing process. D. The magnets’ motion. 10. How does Steager feel about the future of the device? A. Uncertain. B. Unfavorable. C. Concerned. D. Positive. 11. Which of the following would be the best title? A. A Shape-Shifting Robotic Tooth Cleaner B. Magnetic Nanoparticles for Tooth Growth C. A New Concept for Automatic Health Care D. An Antibacteria Liquid Tooth cleaner for Adults D A new kind of stethoscope(听诊器)that uses artificial intelligence (AI) can detect three different heart conditions in 15 seconds. Stethoscopes are devices that medical experts use to listen to most sounds in the body, such as a heartbeat. In the US, more than 6.5 million people have a condition called heart failure, when their heart muscle is not pumping(输送)blood properly. There are signs of the condition, including shortness of breath, but estimates show that 70% of people have the condition confirmed only after they have gone to the hospital for serious symptoms. Early detection by using this new stethoscope enables patients to receive lifesaving treatment sooner. The new device, which was developed in the UK, is the size of a playing card. Doctors put it on a patient’s chest, where it records the electrical signals in the heart and listens to the sound of blood flowing through it. This information is then sent to an AI system, which compares it to data from thousands of other people to see if there’s a problem. The results are immediately sent to a smartphone. The device was tested in a study with more than 12,700 people over the course of a year. The results showed that the AI stethoscope was able to detect unusual heart activity that a doctor might miss with a traditional stethoscope. Patients examined with the AI stethoscope were also twice as likely to have their heart failure spotted. And the device was 3.5 times more likely to detect atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat, and was better at detecting when one or more of a patient’s heart valves were not working properly. The AI stethoscope does require some caution, however. The study found that the device often detected heart failure in patients who did not actually have it. The researchers who designed it said it should be used only when doctors suspect that a patient has heart problems, not for routine checks on healthy people. 12. What can we know about the new kind of stethoscope? A. It can be used to access all body sounds. B. It plays an important role in saving people. C. It can figure out people’s shortness of breath. D. It is able to spot many kinds of heart failures. 13. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on? A. The new stethoscope’s using process. B. The new stethoscope’s wide application. C. The new stethoscope’s disadvantages. D. The new stethoscope’s hidden principle. 14. How does the author prove the new stethoscope’s effectiveness? A. By quoting experts. B. By providing data. C. By analyzing causes. D. By offering comments. 15. What is the author’s attitude towards the new stethoscope? A. Unfavorable. B. Unconcerned. C. Objective. D. Subjective. 第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to become an active learner? Most people think that the human brain learns all by itself. But this isn’t always true.
