Our oldest daughter turned 21 this week. I will try to spare her any more public embarrassment except to say she has grown up to be kind, funny and hard-working. I have learned to accept that our daughters have no real memories of most of the nutty things I used to do just to make them laugh. The times I’d squeeze (挤入) onto a slide in a park to go down head-first. The times I’d pretend to be unaware of walls I would walk into, like a cartoon character. It doesn’t take stage training at the Royal Shakespeare for a father to play the fool with confidence.
Our daughters long ago figured there isn’t really a magic woman on a star outside our windows who looks over them, or a mermaid (美人鱼) who sticks her head out of Lake Michigan to sing, “You’ll be great!” What parents come to tell themselves is that while our children may forget those moments that mean the world to us, they hear the stories, over the years, over and over, and a special sense of closeness lasts. They know you would do anything to make them smile.
Now as young adults, our daughters have written school papers on Shakespeare and Dickens. They sit at our table and talk about the news, films and friends. I’m the only one in the family who still uses some of the words they said as little kids.
My wife and I are slowly beginning to change places with our children. They teach us things, and not just about technology, but about history, events, and what they think we may need to survive in the world ahead. They’re breaking free, as they should. But, they also seem to find time for us in their full schedules, because they can see from the furrows (皱纹) of my anxious, aging face, how important it has become for us to spend time with them.
I even think, now and then, I’ve overheard our daughters asking one another, “Do you remember the time our parents did that silly thing?”
4. What does the author want to stress in paragraph 2?
A. The difficulty of parenting.
B. The meaning of family moments.
C. His passion for different tales.
D. His method of entertaining kids.
5. What role do the daughters now play in the family?
A. They organize family gatherings.
B. They maintain their family traditions.
C. They guide their parents in many areas.
D. They share their academic knowledge.
6. How does the author feel towards his daughters’ growing up?
A. He accepts and treasures their growth.
B. He makes every effort to relate to them.
C. He worries about being a burden to them.
D. He wishes them to remain children forever.
7. Where is the text most likely taken from?
A. A guide for being humorous. B. A research article about families.
C. An essay on parenting skills. D. A blog post about raising children.
C
It seems no one can really agree on the question of “What’s so funny?” So imagine trying to teach a robot how to laugh. But that’s exactly what a team of researchers at Kyoto University in Japan are trying to design an AI that takes its cues through a shared laughter system. The scientists describe their innovative approach to building a funny bone for the Japanese android ‘Erica’ in the latest issue of the journal Frontiers in Robotics and AI.
“We think that one of the important functions of conversational AI is empathy(移情,共鸣),”explained lead author Dr Koji Inoue, an assistant professor at Kyoto University in the Department of Intelligence Science and Technology within the Graduate School of Informatics. “One way a robot can empathize with users is to share their laughter.”
In the shared-laughter model, a human initially laughs and the Al system responds with laughter as an empathetic response. This approach required designing three subsystems-one to detect laughter, a second to decide whether to laugh, and a third to choose the type of appropriate laughter. The type of laughter is also important, because in some cases a polite chuckle may be more appropriate than a loud snort of laughter.
The team tested Erica’s new sense of humor by creating four different short dialogues between a person and Erica with her new shared-laughter system. Then they asked more than 130 people in total to listen to each dialogue within the three different conditions- shared-laughter system, no laughter, all laughter- and evaluated the interactions based on human-likeness, naturalness and understanding. The shared-laughter system performed better than either baseline.
“Robots should actually have a distinct character, and we think that they can show this through their conversational behaviors, such as laughing, eye gaze, gestures and speaking style,” Inoue added. “We do not think this is an easy problem at all, and it may well take more than 10 to 20 years before we can finally have a casual chat with a robot like we would with a friend.”
8. What’s the purpose of raising the question “What’s so funny” at the beginning?
A. To show opinions on funny things.
B. To encourage readers to share their ideas.
C. To stress the difficulty of teaching a robot to laugh.
D. To emphasize the importance of being funny.
9. Which of the following explains the underlined phrase “the funny bone” in paragraph 1?
A. The sense of humor
B. The shared-laughter system
C. The speaking style
D. The distinct character
10. What is NOT needed in the research of the shared-laughter system?
A. Designing the subsystem to decide whether to laugh.
B. Assessing the interactions based on emotions.
C. Creating brief conversations between a human and Erica.
D. Asking people to listen to the previously created dialogues.
11. What is Inoue’s attitude towards conversational AI?
A. Indifferent
B. Suspicious
C. Optimistic
D. Objective
D
John, an 85-year-old man, struggles with simple daily activities due to his poor health. Now imagine a humanoid robot stepping in. This robot not only takes on tasks like cooking or cleaning, but is also a conversational partner.
This idea of robots as caregivers — “carebots” — is a common theme online. There is excitement around the idea as we are facing a shortage of care workers and rising need for care in the light of population ageing. The hope is that these carebots can make caring more effective.
However, there are concerns that increasing dependence on carebots will replace human care or at least worsen human relationships. Other concerns relate to the safety of such robots, the cost and simply whether they can make good on what they promise to deliver. A recent study from Japan suggests low social acceptance of carebots, a particular issue being people not wanting to share personal information with tech companies.
The media narrative about carebots is only part of a broader discussion on the future of social care and technology, which tends to mislead the public about the real problem of integrating (使融合) carebots into caregiving. Technology is a significant part of caregiving and will likely grow in importance. Carebots may become “care collaborators (合作者)”, but only as part of a larger system. The focus should remain on the value of social care and ensuring good quality of life for all.
To achieve this, we need to continue supporting the recognition and training of care workers and family caregivers. Prepare these workers for potential challenges, such as heavier workloads and unpaid hours spent adapting to new systems. Addressing fears — such as job loss, worse pay, or limited human interaction — is critical to gaining public support for carebots. Compassionate (有同情心的) human care must remain central to caregiving with technology serving as a supportive tool, not a replacement. The ideal care system balances human and technological resources.
12. What drives the idea of carebots popular?
A. The gap between carers and ageing needs.
B. The development of advanced technology.
C. The rising costs of hiring human caregivers.
D. The promise of effective caregiving solutions.
13. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning the study from Japan?
A. The ageing population of Japan.
B. The limitations of current robots.
C. The media’s impact on the public.
D. The challenge in promoting carebots.
14. What is the author’s attitude to media reports on carebots?
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Grateful. D. Uncertain.
15. What is the main idea of paragraph 5?
A. Public fears block carebot acceptance.
B. Training workers to operate robots is the key.
C. Technical innovation creates better caregiving.
D. Human caregivers must lead while tools assist.

Some of the toughest battles you ever face are inside yourself. ___16___ How do you master self-control and become your best self? Let’s take a look. Here are some tips that may give you some help.
Know yourself. If you try to force yourself to be disciplined (自我控制) without self-awareness, it’s likely to backfire and not work well at all. ___17___ This means that you need to have a good handle on your strengths and weaknesses. Only by doing this can you become clued in about what you need to do in order to succeed at self-discipline.
Find your purpose. Self-control or self-discipline don’t happen by mistake. They happen when you make a conscious choice and do your best to stick to it. However, no matter how hard you try, much of self-discipline depends on why you’re being disciplined and what your goal is. ___18___
Start small. Discipline is a process, and it needs to start small. It’s better to get one part of your life regimented (整齐的) rather than somewhat improve various parts of your life and have somewhat more discipline. ___19___ Instead, start small with gaining discipline in a specific area or areas of your life and work outwards from there.
___20___ Another of the great strategies for mastering self-control is to have role models to look up to. Nobody is perfect, and every idol has some faults. However, by having an ideal to look up to, you will keep yourself inspired on a regular basis to chase your dreams and try to stick to self-discipline.
A. Follow in great people’s footsteps.
B. You need to overcome your shortcomings first.
C. That’s why it’s so crucial to find your purpose.
D. Avoid making too many big goals at the beginning.
E. This is especially true when speaking about self-control.
F. It’s crucial to have self-knowledge if you want to have self-discipline,
G. Don’t try to put everything all in at once when you work towards your goal.

Around 5:30 a.m., I met my running group — the Los Angeles Roadrunners training team. I had trained with them for ten long months. That ten months left me with blisters (水泡) and back aches. But my pace leaders reassured me that no matter what, I should keep going. I knew my very first marathon was coming. More importantly, my husband and my daughter promised to wait for me at the finishing line.
At about 6:30 a.m., I went to the starting gates and my excitement grew as the gun shot for the start and I was on cloud nine.
The first few miles were quite easy, but by mile 8 the pain was starting to spread all over my body, as if it were growing like a cancer. I had no choice but to slow down. Slowing down is much better than quitting, so I slowed down from my group and realized that the rest of this race was going to be just me and the road. Mile 12 brought about doubts whether I could even finish this race.
By mile 15, my pace had slowed even further. I reminded myself, “Just get to that finish line. Keep running, head held high.” Mile 18 brought me into familiar territory — my neighborhood. I had slowed to a walk by this point because my body didn’t want to move an inch. I wanted to just walk home. But I couldn’t because I had to keep going.
By mile 21, I had been told many times by spectators (观众), “You’re almost there. Keep it up!” The smile on their faces, and the determined look in their eyes made me realize how much they cared that I could finish. Left foot forward, now right foot forward. Every step I took, the intensity of the pain soaked (浸入) into every cell in my body. I’d been running for 4 hours with what seemed like no end in sight.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
With just 4 miles left, I really wanted to quit.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, the smiling faces of my family came into my sight.

A. Indifferent
B. Suspicious
C. Optimistic
D. Objective
C 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据第一段“It seems no one can really agree on the question of “What’s so funny?” So imagine trying to teach a robot how to laugh. But that’s exactly what a team of researchers at Kyoto University in Japan are trying to design an AI that takes its cues through a shared laughter system. (似乎没有人能在“什么事这么好笑?”这个问题上达成一致意见。想象一下,你要教一个机器人如何笑。但这正是日本京都大学的一组研究人员正在试图设计的一种人工智能,它可以通过共享笑声系统获取线索。)”可推断,在一开始就提出“什么事这么好笑”这个问题的目的是强调教机器人笑的难度。故选C。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词前句“So imagine trying to teach a robot how to laugh. But that’s exactly what a team of researchers at Kyoto University in Japan are trying to design an AI that takes its cues through a shared laughter system. (想象一下,你要教一个机器人如何笑。但这正是日本京都大学的一组研究人员正在试图设计的一种人工智能,它可以通过共享笑声系统获取线索。)”可知,日本科学家用创新方法为日本机器人“爱丽卡”制造幽默感。所以the funny bone为“幽默感”之意。故选A。
根据第三段“This approach required designing three subsystems-one to detect laughter, a second to decide whether to laugh, and a third to choose the type of appropriate laughter. The type of laughter is also important, because in some cases a polite chuckle may be more appropriate than a loud snort of laughter. (这种方法需要设计三个子系统——一个检测笑声,第二个决定是否要笑,第三个选择合适的笑声类型。笑的类型也很重要,因为在某些情况下,礼貌的轻笑可能比大声的哼声大笑更合适。)”和第四段“The team tested Erica’s new sense of humor by creating four different short dialogues between a person and Erica with her new shared-laughter system. Then they asked more than 130 people in total to listen to each dialogue within the three different conditions- shared-laughter system, no laughter, all laughter- and evaluated the interactions based on human-likeness, naturalness and understanding. (研究小组用艾丽卡新的分享笑声系统,在一个人和她之间创造了四段不同的简短对话,以此来测试她的新幽默感。然后,他们让130多人在三种不同的条件下(分享笑声、无笑声、全笑声)听每段对话,并根据与人的相似度、自然度和理解力来评估这些互动。)”可知,共享笑系统的研究不需要基于情绪评估互动。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Robots should actually have a distinct character, and we think that they can show this through their conversational behaviors, such as laughing, eye gaze, gestures and speaking style,” Inoue added. “We do not think this is an easy problem at all, and it may well take more than 10 to 20 years before we can finally have a casual chat with a robot like we would with a friend.” (井上补充说:“机器人实际上应该具有鲜明的性格,我们认为它们可以通过对话行为表现出这一点,比如大笑、眼神凝视、手势和说话风格。”“我们不认为这是一个简单的问题,很可能需要10到20年以上的时间,我们才能最终与机器人像与朋友一样随意聊天。”)”可推断,井上对对话AI的态度是客观的。故选D。

A 13. D 14. A 15. D
根据第二段中“This idea of robots as caregivers — “carebots” — is a common theme online. There is excitement around the idea as we are facing a shortage of care workers and rising need for care in the light of population ageing.(将机器人作为照护者——即“护理机器人”——这一理念在网络上十分流行。随着人口老龄化加剧,社会对护理人员的需求不断上升,而护理岗位却日益短缺,因此这一设想引发了广泛关注)”可知,人们对护理机器人抱有期待,是因为我们正面临护理人员短缺,同时人口老龄化背景下护理需求不断上涨。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Other concerns relate to the safety of such robots, the cost and simply whether they can make good on what they promise to deliver. A recent study from Japan suggests low social acceptance of carebots, a particular issue being people not wanting to share personal information with tech companies.(此外,人们对这类机器人的安全性、成本问题以及是否真正兑现其承诺也存在顾虑。日本最近的一项研究显示,公众对护理机器人的接受度较低,尤其是一些人不愿向科技公司分享个人信息)”可知,作者先指出大众对护理机器人的诸多顾虑,之后列举日本的研究显示大众对护理机器人的社会接受度很低,还存在不愿向科技公司泄露个人信息的具体问题,是为了说明推广护理机器人面临现实阻碍。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“The media narrative about carebots is only part of a broader discussion on the future of social care and technology, which tends to mislead the public about the real problem of integrating (使融合) carebots into caregiving.(媒体对照护机器人的报道只是关于社会护理与技术未来更广泛讨论的一部分,这往往会在将护理机器人融入护理工作的真正难题上误导公众)”可知,作者明确指出关于护理机器人的媒体叙事往往会在“把护理机器人融入护理行业的真正难题”上误导公众,可见作者对媒体报道持批评态度。
根据第五段中“Compassionate (有同情心的) human care must remain central to caregiving with technology serving as a supportive tool, not a replacement. The ideal care system balances human and technological resources.(富有同情心的人类护理应始终处于核心地位,而技术则应作为辅助工具,而非替代品。理想的护理体系应平衡人类资源与技术资源)”可知,本段主旨是人类护理必须占主导地位,技术则应作为辅助。

E 17. F 18. C 19. G 20. A

This is especially true when speaking about self-control.(在谈到自我控制时尤其如此。)中的“This”指代了上句提到的内心斗争的情况,同时句中的“self-control”与下句“How do you master self-control and become your best self? (如何掌握自我控制,成为最好的自己?)”的“self-control”相连接,引出了下句的问题,语意相连,承上启下。故选E。
【17题详解】
根据上句“If you try to force yourself to be disciplined(自我控制)without self-awareness, it’s likely to backfire and not work well at all. (如果你在没有自我意识的情况下强迫自己自我控制,很可能适得其反,根本起不到什么作用。)”,选项F. It’s crucial to have self-knowledge if you want to have self-discipline,(如果你想要自律,有自知之明是至关重要的,)中的“self-knowledge”和上句中的“self-awareness”相对应,意思相同;下句“This means that you need to have a good handle on your strengths and weaknesses.( 这意味着你需要很好地把握自己的长处和短处。)”
根据上句“However, no matter how hard you try, much of self-discipline depends on why you’re being disciplined and what your goal is.(然而,无论你多么努力,自律在很大程度上取决于你为什么要自律,以及你的目标是什么。)”,选项C. That’s why it’s so crucial to find your purpose.(这就是为什么找到你的目标是如此重要。)

in recent decades为现在完成时标志;主语research是不可数名词,谓语用单数形式has shown。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
With just 4 miles left, I really wanted to quit.

Finally, the smiling faces of my family came into my sight.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With just 4 miles left, I really wanted to quit. My legs felt like lead, and my breathing was labored. Doubts filled my mind. “How could I finish? Was it even possible?” But then I thought of my husband and daughter waiting for me at the finish line. Their encouragement and love gave me a new burst of energy. I gritted my teeth and forced myself to take one step after another, telling myself that giving up was not an option.
Finally, the smiling faces of my family came into my sight. Tears welled up in my eyes and streamed down my cheeks. I summoned all my remaining strength and ran towards them. Crossing that finish line was the greatest moment of my life. The exhaustion vanished instantly as I was embraced by my loved ones. I had done it. I had completed my first marathon, proving to myself that with determination and love, anything was possible.
