For our school’s community day, each class was asked to choose one small project. Some students wanted to collect books; others wanted to record the stories of older neighbours. At first, I thought the best plan was the one that could (11) ______ the greatest number of people by solving their everyday problems.
Our teacher asked us to find out what the community centre actually needed. Two classmates visited it and came back with an unexpected (12) ______ to that question: the centre already had plenty of books, but new visitors often had trouble finding rooms. A colourful sign might look simple, yet it could make their first visit (13) ______.
We agreed to make signs. We had only one afternoon, so I offered to write the words because I thought I could finish them (14) ______ and save time. But when I showed the first set to the group, Jia pointed out that the letters were too small to read from the end of the hall. I wanted to explain that I had worked hard, but her comment concerned (15) ______, not me.
We tested three sizes of letters. Then we asked a few visitors to stand at different places and (16) ______ the words aloud without moving closer. Their replies helped us choose the largest size. We also used arrows, but one pointed towards a door that was (17) ______ to visitors. A notice on it said “Staff only”. We changed the arrow to show the way to a door everyone could use.

On the day we put up the signs, one visitor still went the wrong way. Instead of saying she had not looked carefully, we asked (18) ______ had made her choose that way. She said that two arrows close together seemed to point to the same room. We moved one sign and asked her to try again. This time, nobody guided her, and she reached the room (19) ______ help.
Our project did not change the whole centre. We had used only card, paint and a few hours of work. Still, I noticed that fewer visitors asked questions such as “Where is Room 3?” They did not need to ask for (20) ______ as often. The centre manager said the signs had saved her time, which she could now use to welcome people.
I had begun by thinking that a useful project must be (21) ______, perhaps one covering the whole town rather than a single building. The experience taught me to look more closely at a real need. It also changed the way I listened to advice. When Jia questioned my design, I almost (22) ______ her advice because I thought it was a personal criticism. Instead, I listened and found information that made the work better.
We kept a photo of the first sign next to the final one in our report. The report answered a question: “(23) ______ did you make each change?” It gave a reason for every decision: bigger letters for distance, clearer arrows for choice, and an open route for visitors. The report ended with a question for the next class: “What will you (24) ______ local people about their needs before you decide what to make?” It was a question we wished we had asked at the (25) ______.

A Advice Desk
Students can send questions to the school advice desk. Names are not shown in the replies. |
Q: I enjoy both art and science. My friends say I must choose one club, but I have never tried either. How can I decide?
A: First check when each club meets. If there is no timetable problem, attend one meeting of each before choosing. Ask what members actually do, not only what prizes they have won. After the visits, write down what you enjoyed and what you would like to learn. Your friends can share their experiences, but the choice should fit your interests and time.

B An Old Railway Station
While looking through a family photo album, Mei found a picture of an old railway station. Her grandmother had written the year 1975 on the back. In the picture, people were waiting on a platform beside a small brick building.
Mei knew the building. She passed it on her way to the library, but she had never seen a train there. The railway line had closed years before she was born. Instead of pulling the building down, the town had repaired it and made it into a library.
The next Saturday, Mei took the photograph to the library. She noticed that the arched windows in the picture were still there, although the platform had become a small garden. A display inside explained that volunteers had collected old photographs and tickets to record the station’s history.
Mei had thought an old building could be useful only if it kept its first purpose. Now she saw another possibility: a familiar place could serve people in a new way while helping them remember the past.

A. An old ticket from the station. B. A photograph of an old station.
C. A map of the former railway. D. A drawing of the station building.

A. It became a library. B. It remained an operating station.
C. It became a railway museum. D. It was moved to a different site.
32. Which detail shows a connection between the old building and the present one?
A. The trains still stop there. B. The old platform is unchanged.
C. The garden was always there. D. The arched windows remain.
33. What did Mei learn from the visit?
A. A building is useful only if its original purpose stays the same.
B. A place keeps its history only when nothing changes.
C. A place can gain a new use and keep its history.
D. A building should be replaced when its first use ends.
C Testing a Bus Schedule
A school wanted to reduce delays on a morning bus route. Drivers noticed that buses sometimes arrived late, but the school did not know whether changing the departure time would help. It decided to test two schedules on the same route.
During the first week, the bus left at 7:20 and arrived on time on three of five days. During the second week, it left ten minutes earlier and arrived on time on four days. However, roadworks caused a delay on one morning, so the two weeks were not exactly alike.
