五、阅读理解。
阅读短文,从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳答案。
FAST, short for the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope(口径球面望远镜), is known as China’s Sky Eye. It is the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope. It sits in a quiet karst valley in Guizhou. The special landform blocks most radio noise from human activities. Nan Rendong, the lead scientist, and his team spent over twenty years on its design and building. It was finished in 2016 and officially opened for global research in 2020. Its huge dish is 500 metres wide, made up of thousands of small panels.
Different from common optical(光学的) telescopes that catch light, FAST collects weak radio signals travelling through space. Its main task is to “listen” to the universe. It studies pulsars(脉冲星), black holes and neutral hydrogen(中性氢) gas. It helps scientists learn about how the universe grew after the Big Bang. It also searches for fast radio bursts and looks for possible signals from distant space.
In recent years, ★ It has found hundreds of new pulsars. It has discovered special binary(双星的) neutron star systems and captured key evidence about the origin of fast radio bursts. It also made surprising findings about interstellar magnetic fields, challenging the old star-formation theory. Many of its results have been published in top science magazines like Nature and Science.
Duncan Lorimer, the astronomer who discovered the first fast radio burst, spoke highly of it. “It is a remarkable result. It is the testament(佐证) to the power of the FAST radio telescope in China, to make these monitoring observations,” he said. Richard Crutcher, a famous professor from the University of Illinois, also

commented that FAST has great potential to solve major astrophysical(天体物理的) problems. He expected it to bring more breakthroughs in the study of star formation.
FAST is not only a great Chinese achievement. It welcomes scientists from all over the world. It stands for human curiosity about the unknown. It keeps listening silently deep in the mountains, pushing human astronomy forward.
( ) 1.Why is FAST built in a quiet karst valley in Guizhou?
A. The valley has a very mild and pleasant climate all year round.
B. The special landform blocks most radio noise from human activities.
C. The local government provides enough money for the project.
D. The valley is the closest place to the deep space in China.
( ) 2. Which of the following can be put in the ★ ?
A. FAST has made amazing achievements.
B. FAST only works on the research of black holes.
C. FAST has solved all the mysteries of the universe.
D. No one in the world pays attention to FAST’s results.
( ) 3. Which of the following statements about FAST is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It was completed and opened for global research in the same year 2016.
B. It works by catching visible light just like common optical telescopes.
C. Richard Crutcher is the astronomer who discovered the first fast radio burst.
D. Its research findings have challenged the old star-formation theory.
( ) 4.The writer uses the words of two foreign scientists mainly to ______.
