Explore some recommendations from trusted critics. My Brother Is Away (Sara Greenwood, illustrated by Luisa Uribe) It’s never easy to explain that a family member is kept in prison, and it can be especially hard for children. This touching book draws on the author’s own childhood to tell the story of a young girl whose brother is in prison. What does she say to her friends who have seen him on the news? And will he still love her? A gentle and hopeful story for kids about very adult situations and complex feelings. (For ages 5 to 8) Eyes that Kiss in the Corners (Joanna Ho, illustrated by Dung Ho) This book is brilliantly written because it focuses both on how the characters’ eyes look and on how they see. Focusing on a young girl who takes pride in her “eyes that kiss in the corner and glow like warm tea”, Joanna Ho’s lyrical intergenerational story combines with Dung Ho’s warm and often magical imagery to bring us a celebration on how we see the world — and how we see ourselves. (For ages 4 to 8) Rez Dogs (Joseph Bruchac) When COVID-19 hits, Malian is visiting her grandparents. It is in Malian’s grandparents’ stories that she learns how the people of her native community have always taken care of one another. Written in poetry, this book shows us the pandemic through a child’s eyes and helps remind us that responsibility and caring for one another is something we all can do. (For ages 8 to 12) Listen to the Language of the Trees (Tera Kelly, illustrated by Marie Hermansson) If you know about the “Wood Wide Web”, you know that trees communicate through the fungi that connect their roots. Still, did you know how they support one another with extra food? How they can tell their offspring (后代) apart from other trees? How they can warn other trees when insects attack? Then, consider this outstanding book for kids on the topic. (For ages 4 to 8) 36. Which book is particularly recommended for children who are dealing with family members in difficult situations? A. My Brother Is Away B. Eyes that Kiss in the Corners C. Rez Dogs D. Listen to the Language of the Trees 37. What do My Brather Is Away and Eyes that Kiss in the Corners have in common? A. Unsure if I deserved a place in the program, I worried I wasn’t as talented as my peers. When the professor asked about our summer plans, I panicked. I didn’t want to appear idle, so without much thought, I blurted out (脱口而出) “gardening”. Surprisingly, my professor nodded and mentioned Emily Dickinson loved gardening. Emily Dickinson, a great American poet, studied plants as a child. But I was in my late twenties, lived in a New York apartment and had no gardening experience. A few days later, I was standing in line at a store and spotted some seedlings. I thought I should get something. At least I could say I had tried gardening. Wait, was that a jalapeno I picked it up. Back home, I called an urban farmer friend. He told me that jalapenos aren’t houseplants and need plenty of sunlight to thrive. I didn’t have outdoor garden space, but I had a pot, some soil and plenty of ambition. Over the summer, the plant grew, not enormous but bigger. I was proud. Maybe I didn’t have a black thumb after all. I started the second year of my MFA, and then — as sometimes happens in New York — I had to move out of my apartment. I stayed with my friends for a while, and my jalapeno came with me. By the time I found my own apartment, it was almost December and my jalapeno was suffering: many of its leaves had fallen off. I set it next to a window by the kitchen sink, and hoped for the best. I continued to work hard in school. Then spring came. My jalapeno plant came back to life. It grew bigger, with new leaves. And it flowered when I submitted my graduate thesis — a book of poems — in May. I was washing some dishes one day when my professor called. “Your poems are strong,” he said. “You’ve come very far.” I’d done it! I went back to the dishes, but something was off. The flowers on my jalapeno were gone. Had I done something wrong? I peered closer. Where a flower had been, a tiny green fruit pushed through. 41. Why did the professor mention Emily Dickinson? A. C 42. C 43. C 44. B 45. 根据第一段中“When the professor asked about our summer plans, I panicked. I didn't want to appear idle, so without much thought, I blurted out (脱口而出) “gardening”. Surprisingly, my professor nodded and mentioned Emily Dickinson loved gardening. (当教授问我们的暑假计划时,我慌了。我不想显得无所事事,所以不假思索地脱口而出“园艺”。令人惊讶的是,教授点了点头,提到艾米莉·狄金森热爱园艺)”可知,作者因不自信而随口说了“园艺”,教授提到狄金森热爱园艺,是为了肯定和支持作者的选择,说明园艺是一件有意义的事情,从而为作者的决定赋予正当性。 【42题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“He told me that jalapenos aren't houseplants and need plenty of sunlight to thrive. (他告诉我墨西哥辣椒不是室内植物,需要充足的阳光才能茁壮成长)”可知,从城市农夫朋友那里得知,墨西哥辣椒需要大量阳光才能长好。 【43题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Over the summer, the plant grew, not enormous but bigger. I was proud. Maybe I didn’t have a black thumb after all. (整个夏天,植物长大了,虽然不算巨大但确实变大了。我很自豪。也许毕竟我并没有a black thumb)”可知,植物成功长大,作者感到自豪,说明之前担心自己不擅长种东西,而“a black thumb”与“green thumb(园艺天赋)”相对,意为“不擅长园艺的能力”。 【44题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中“Unsure if I deserved a place in the program, I worried I wasn't as talented as my peers. (不确定自己是否配得上这个项目,我担心自己不如同龄人有才华)”以及最后段中教授评价“Your poems are strong... You’ve come very far. C We’ve all heard that ostriches (鸵鸟) bury their heads in the sand when danger approaches. While untrue for the ostriches, it mirrors a common human behavior called “information avoidance” — the active choice to turn away from the freely available information highly relevant to ourselves. But why do we change from naturally curious children into selective information avoiders? A 2025 study titled “Becoming an Ostrich” explored this. Researchers had children aged 5 to 10 play a game where researchers designed two candy distribution schemes (方案): equal shares for each, or one large share and one small share. Most children chose the latter and claimed the large share. Then, researchers asked whether they would like to know how many candies were left for their partner. The result was interesting. Younger children showed strong curiosity, actively seeking their partner’s information. The older children, however, increasingly chose to avoid it. Researchers explained as children grow older, they become more concerned with feeling at ease — even if their actions might not be moral. By avoiding their partner’s information, they tend to keep a sense of fairness, or at least appearing fair. This strategy makes it easier to act in satisfying personal interests without feeling guilty. They note that adults routinely employ the same approach in various real-life situations. Yet avoidance has long-term costs. Skipping health screenings may ease anxiety now, but can risk serious health issues later. Avoiding tough conversations may prevent short-term conflict, but will likely trap people in unsatisfying relationships. “By repeatedly avoiding opposing views,” researchers warn, “we build avoidance habits that can harden into rigid thinking patterns over time.” It’s no wonder researchers refer to this as a fundamental human contradiction: we start out in life as curious explorers, eager as possible to absorb whatever knowledge we can. Yet, somewhere along the way, we learn to stick our heads in the sand like an ostrich. This comfortable escape, nevertheless, can shape our choices and determine how our lives unfold. Recognizing this is the first step toward reclaiming the courageous curiosity that defines our earliest years. 46. How does the author introduce “information avoidance” in Paragraph 1? A. By using a metaphor. B. By offering statistics. C. By showing an argument. D. By giving an example. 47. Why did the older children avoid their partner’s information? A. To maintain a nice self-image. B. To safeguard others’ interests. C. To keep their sense of guilt. D. To obey the rules of the game. 48. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The consequences of avoidance actions. B. The ways of forming thinking patterns. C. The reasons of ignoring opposing views. D. The health costs of our avoidance habits. 49. What is the long-term risk of information avoidance? A. It will make people totally lose interest in games. B. It may lead to fixed and inflexible thought patterns. C. People will no longer be able to communicate with others. D. People will pay little attention to their short-term anxiety. 50. What is the main message of the passage? A. Information avoidance is a natural and harmless human behavior. B. Children are more curious than adults because they know less. C. Avoiding relevant information may offer comfort but has long-term costs. D. Ostriches actually bury their heads in sand to avoid danger. 46. A 47. A 48. A 49. B 50. 根据第一段中“We’ve all heard that ostriches (鸵鸟) bury their heads in the sand when danger approaches. While untrue for the ostriches, it mirrors a common human behavior called “information avoidance” (我们都听说过,当危险来临时,鸵鸟会把头埋进沙子里。虽然对鸵鸟来说这并不真实,但它映射了一种常见的人类行为,称为“信息回避”)”可知,作者以鸵鸟把头埋进沙子里这一广为人知的说法作为比喻,引出“信息回避”这一概念。 【47题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“By avoiding their partner's information, they tend to keep a sense of fairness, or at least appearing fair. This strategy makes it easier to act in satisfying personal interests without feeling guilty. (通过回避伙伴的信息,他们倾向于保持公平感,或者至少看起来公平。这种策略使他们更容易满足个人利益而不感到内疚。)”可知,年龄较大的孩子回避信息是为了维持良好的自我形象,使自己看起来公平且不内疚。 【48题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第四段中“Yet avoidance has long-term costs. Skipping health screenings may ease anxiety now, but can risk serious health issues later. Avoiding tough conversations may prevent short-term conflict, but will likely trap people in unsatisfying relationships. (然而回避有长期代价。跳过健康筛查可能暂时缓解焦虑,但以后可能面临严重的健康问题。回避艰难的对话可能防止短期冲突,但很可能将人们困在不满意的关系中。)”可知,本段主要讲述了回避行为带来的后果。 【49题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中““By repeatedly avoiding opposing views,” researchers warn, “we build avoidance habits that can harden into rigid thinking patterns over time.” (研究人员警告,“通过反复回避对立观点,我们养成的回避习惯会随着时间的推移固化为僵化的思维模式。”)”可知,信息回避的长期风险是可能导致固定且不灵活的思维模式。 【50题详解】 主旨大意题。根据全文内容,尤其是第四段“Yet avoidance has long-term costs.(然而回避行为有长期代价。)”和最后一段中“This comfortable escape, nevertheless, can shape our choices and determine how our lives unfold.(然而,这种舒适的逃避方式会塑造我们的选择并决定我们的生活走向。)” D It’s essential for parents to teach their kids financial responsibility and that money should be earned. Still many child-development experts agree that trying a child’s allowance to chores (家务劳动) can be a slippery slope. Here’s why. Susie Walton, master instructor at Peace in Your Home advises to keep chores and allowances totally separate. “Allowance is one thing. When it comes to chores, life skills, responsibilities — that’s a whole different thing,” says Walton. Walton says, “When kids aren’t doing a chore, you don’t say, ‘Well, there goes your allowance.’ You’re going to sit them down and ask what’s going on. ‘We’re a team. We’re a family. We’ve got to have them done.’” Besides, by paying children for chores with an allowance, you’ll also be sending the message that work isn’t worth doing unless they’re getting paid for it. There are times when it would make sense to pay kids for chores. Most financial and child-development experts agree that it’s a fine idea to pay children money for extra jobs that are outside their normal set of chores, such as washing windows, washing the car or helping to clean out the garage — especially if the child is saving for a big item. This may even develop an entrepreneurial (企业家的) spirit to think outside of the box to earn money. For parents who are concerned that their children won’t learn the value of a dollar if the allowance isn’t tied to household chores, note that there are still plenty of money management skills to be learned from a straight allowance. Depending on the age, kids can be made responsible for paying for their own toys or snacks. Some parents even require that kids set aside a percentage of their allowance towards savings. “I really like having my own money,” says Kevin, 9. “It’s up to me if I want to buy the cheap toy now, or save and get the better toy.” And that’s a good lesson to learn at 9 years old. No matter which allowance route you take in parenthood, kids will feel empowered by being able to handle their own money. 51. Which of the following would Susie Walton probably agree with? A. Kids should be paid for doing chores all the time. B. Kids shouldn’t be forced to do chores at home. C. Doing chores teaches kids the value of work. D. A child’s allowance shouldn’t be tied to chores. 52. According to Susie Walton, if kids don’t do chores, parents should ________. A. teach them the entrepreneurial spirit B. talk to them about family responsibilities C. give them a smaller allowance than usual D. punish them by not giving them allowance 53. In Para. 6, “a straight allowance” probably means “________”. A. money earned by kids themselves by doing part-time jobs B. money given by charity organizations C. money given by parents and not dependent on chores D. money earned by doing everyday chores 54. What is the author’s attitude towards Kevin’s action? A. Approving. B. Worried. C. Doubtful. D. Unfavorable. 55. The text is mainly about ________. A. the importance of kids helping parents with chores B. parents should give kids regular allowances C. the advantages of kids handling their own money D. whether parents should pay kids for chores 【答案】51. D 52. B 53. C 54. A 55. 根据第二段“Susie Walton, master instructor at Peace in Your Home advises to keep chores and allowances totally separate. “Allowance is one thing. When it comes to chores, life skills, responsibilities — that’s a whole different thing,” says Walton. (Peace in Your Home的首席导师Susie Walton建议将家务和零用钱完全分开。Walton表示:“零用钱是一回事。而家务、生活技能和责任——这些完全是另一回事。”)”可知,Susie Walton认为零花钱和家务是两回事,不应混为一谈,因此,她会同意“孩子的零花钱不应与家务挂钩”的观点。故选D项。 【52题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Walton says, “When kids aren’t doing a chore, you don’t say, ‘Well, there goes your allowance.’ You’re going to sit them down and ask what’s going on. ‘We’re a team. We’re a family. We’ve got to have them done.’”(Walton说:“当孩子不做家务时,不要说‘好吧,你的零花钱没了’。而是应该和他们坐下来谈谈,问发生了什么。‘我们是一个团队。我们是一家人。我们必须完成这些。’”)”可知,Walton认为此时应与孩子谈论家庭责任。故选B项。 【53题详解】 词句猜测题。根据画线部分的上文“For parents who are concerned that their children won’t learn the value of a dollar if the allowance isn’t tied to household chores, note that there are still plenty of money management skills to be learned from… (对于那些担心如果不把零花钱和家务挂钩孩子就无法理解金钱价值的家长,需要注意(孩子)仍可以从……中学到理财技能)”可知,这部分技能源自不与家务挂钩的零花钱,因此画线部分指的是父母给的、与家务无关的零花钱。故选C项。 【54题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““I really like having my own money,” says Kevin, 9. “It’s up to me if I want to buy the cheap toy now, or save and get the better toy.” And that’s a good lesson to learn at 9 years old. (“我很喜欢有自己的钱,”9岁的Kevin说。“现在买便宜玩具还是存钱买更好的,由我决定。”这对9岁的孩子是很好的一课)”可知,作者认为Kevin从自主支配零花钱中学到了有价值的东西,说明对其做法是赞同的。故选A项。 通读全文,尤其是第一段中“It’s essential for parents to teach their kids financial responsibility and that money should be earned. Still many child-development experts agree that trying a child’s allowance to chores (家务劳动) can be a slippery slope. Ahn was carefully cleaning windows of her family’s new Vietnamese restaurant. She turned her vision to look outside the restaurant as a girl about her age walked up the street. Ahn’s family had recently moved to this neighborhood, so she had few friends. The girl paused to study the sign announcing their future opening and then looked directly at Ahn. Ahn smiled shyly and lifted a hand, accidentally waving with the cleaning cloth. The girl laughed at her amusement and waved back in acknowledgment. Ahn hesitated for a while but opened the door. “Hello,” she said with a big smile, adding the first thing that entered her head, “Do you like Vietnamese food?” “I don’t know, but I like to try new things,” the girl said, and then she introduced herself as Gabriela. Ahn could not think of additional conversation until she had a sudden idea. “Please wait here,” she requested. Then she ran into the kitchen and took some Vietnamese candy to Gabriela. She said, “If you enjoy it, I hope you’ll return to the restaurant sometime.” “Excellent, I’ll see you around soon. You can take my word for it.” Gabriela said and headed down the street. The following day, after decorating the restaurant with some beautiful flowers, Ahn saw Gabriela come to her with a plate. Ahn warmly opened the door. Gabriela presented the plate and said, “Your candy is delicious. I’ve never tasted such unique candy. I like it. And my parents and grandmother are also fond of it. I’m really grateful. I bring you biscuits made from my grandmother’s recipe.” Gabriela entered and praised the room with its beautiful decoration. She even assisted Ahn in designing a pamphlet (小册子) for the restaurant. The two girls from very different backgrounds became best friends. A. A travel journal B It was my last class before summer break, and I was finishing up the first year of a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in poetry. A. D It’s essential for parents to teach their kids financial responsibility and that money should be earned. A. the importance of kids helping parents with chores B. parents should give kids regular allowances C. the advantages of kids handling their own money D. whether parents should pay kids for chores Ahn was carefully cleaning windows of her family’s new Vietnamese restaurant. Ahn was positive that the restaurant would make a strong impression on the community, that customers would be plentiful, and that she was going to enjoy life, especially the new friendship here. 56.
