But three years ago, when I was a 13-year-old boy, I thought adults knew nothing about life. That warm spring day, Dad came home holding a small apple sapling (树苗). “Let’s plant it together,” he said. I shook my head. “Why waste time? The store sells apples ready to eat!” But he smiled, quietly opened the roots. For weeks, I complained (抱怨) as we watered the weak tree. “It’ll never grow!” I said angrily when the strong summer storms nearly made it fall over. Father simply saved it with bamboo sticks, saying, “Good things take time, just like building a strong house.” At that time, I didn’t get what he meant. Our final exams were at the end of the term. Since I failed math, I tore (撕) my test paper angrily. “I’m done!” Father found me sitting next to our knee-high tree. Instead of giving long speeches, he pointed at its new leaves. “Do you remember when it almost didn’t make it through the storm? Now it’s standing tall, all because it refused to give up!” I realized it all of a sudden. I began to study just as the tree grew, slowly yet surely. My father quietly cheered me on. During late-night studying, he’d put energy drinks beside my books. Even without saying anything, his strong hand on my shoulder said it all. This morning, I found the first red apple shining among the leaves. Dad gently handed it to me after picking it. “Hard work makes it sweet,” he smiled. The apple tasted like someone had poured patience, love, and a warm hug into it. 11. Why did the boy complain about planting the tree? A. Because he disliked apples. B. Because he distrusted his father. C. Because he thought it wasted time. D. Because he believed the tree would die. 12. What does “I’m done!” mean in the story? A. I want to give up. B. B When you look at a traditional Chinese building, the roof is often the first thing that catches your eyes. It is not just for keeping rain out, but also shows history, culture and social position. Different roof styles developed in different dynasties, each with special features and uses. The Wudian roof first appeared in the Shang and Zhou dynasties and later became the most honoured roof style. It has four sloping (倾斜的) sides and five ridges, which stand for the highest power. This grand style was only used for the most important buildings, such as the main halls of the Forbidden City. As roof designs grew more beautiful in the Han Dynasty, the Xuanshan roof prevailed. It became the most common style at that time. It has two sloping sides, and its roof edges (边) go beyond the walls. It was also during this time that roof corners began to turn up, making the heavy structure look lighter and more graceful. A golden age of Chinese building, the Tang Dynasty saw the rise of the Xieshan roof. It has nine ridges and joins two shapes—the top part looks like a two-sided roof, while the bottom part has four sides. This style was used for important buildings like palaces’ side halls and main temples. By the Ming Dynasty, the Yingshan roof was widely used by ordinary families across the country because it was simple and practical. It also has two sloping sides, but its side walls rise higher than the roof, covering the roof at both ends and making the building safer from fire. Besides these, there is the Zuanjian roof; which is different from the others. It has no flat ridge. Instead, all sides meet at a point at the top. This style is often seen in gardens and famous buildings like the Temple of Heaven. Today, these ancient roofs still stand across China. They remind us that building is never just about use. A roof can show power, belief, and beauty all at once. Each roof carries the mark of its time and tells a small piece of China’s long story. 16. What is the main idea of the first paragraph? A. The roof of a traditional Chinese building is very beautiful. B. There are many kinds of roof styles in modern Chinese buildings. C. The roof is important and carries rich meanings besides its basic use. D. The roof can tell us the social position of the people who built the house. 17. What can we learn from the passage? A. The Xieshan roof is usually seen in gardens. B. The Xuanshan roof was used in the Forbidden City. C. The Yingshan roof can keep houses safer from fire. D. The Wudian roof was widely used for common people’s houses. 18. Which sentence uses “prevailed” with the same meaning as the underlined word? A. In the end, peace prevailed over war in that country. B. Short skirts prevailed among young girls last summer. C. A dead silence prevailed in the classroom after the teacher left. D. Our school team prevailed against the visiting team by 3 points. 19. Which of the following pictures shows the Zuanjian roof? A. B. C. D. 20. What is the best title for the passage? A. Chinese Roofs Through the Ages B. Famous Classical Roofs in the World C. A Guide to Ancient Chinese Buildings D. Social Meanings Reflected in Chinese Roofs C You may feel that math is difficult and boring. Is it possible that you’ve been looking at math in the wrong way? Li Xing, a math professor at Ning Xia University, thinks math can be beautiful and fun. I completely agree with what he said. Numbers are beautiful Many people today want to have beautiful looks. There is math hidden in beautiful human bodies. Measure the length from your head to your belly button and from your belly button to your feet. The ratio (比例) of these two numbers is always around 0.618. This is the golden ratio, which can be seen everywhere, like in nature, music and paintings. In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers. As Li Bai wrote, “My boat has left ten thousand mountains far away”, “A thousand miles in one day”, —all these numbers show how fast Li Bai traveled and how happy he felt. Curves (曲线) are beautiful “Sine curves” are beautiful. They go towards the two opposite directions on and on without ever ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching the waves slowly moving. “Tangent curve” (正切曲线) is like a waterfall, just as Li Bai wrote, “dashing (冲) down three thousand feet from on high” . Formulas (公式) are beautiful There are some amazing formulas. Take the Pythagorean theorem for instance: in a right-angled triangle, the square of the longest side equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Isn’t that fascinating? As the Chinese-American mathematician Chern Shingshen once said, “it is really enjoyable!” 21. If the ratio of a thing is around 0.618, ________. A. it has a golden color B. it only happens in human bodies C. it looks like a human body D. it might bring people a sense of beauty 22. Why does the writer mention Li Bai and his poems in the passage? A. To introduce the topic. B. To support his opinion. C. To share the beauty of Li Bai’s poems. D. To offer advice on learning math. 23. What does a tangent curve look like? A. B. C. D. 24. What does the underlined word “equals” probably mean? 25. What is the passage mainly about? A. Why math is beautiful and fun. B. Why math is difficult and boring. C. How we can learn math in a right way. D. How math helps us live a better life. Although the songs aren’t played now, they can’t get out of your brain. They are known as earworms (耳虫). An earworm can be kept in your head after you listen to the music. But it can also happen if something brings back a memory of the song, like visiting the place where you first heard it. ____26____ That’s why it is seen as a common thing. Why do we get earworms? Scientists have studied earworms for years. They have been doing some research into what makes a particular part of music so catchy. A catchy piece of music means it is very easy to learn, and can be kept in your brain for a long period. ____27____ What would cause the human brain to repeat the same song at the very beginning? ____28____ But long ago, before people used writing to communicate, we passed along information through songs. So, we may have developed ways to keep music in our head in order to remember valuable information. Whatever the reason, when a song can’t get out of your brain, it can be unpleasant! ____29____ You can listen to another song or try to do something else, or tell others about your earworm which can change the way your brain forms memories of music. ____30____ Then perhaps you should just sit back and try to enjoy the earworm! A. This is still a mystery. B. There is a song in your mind. C. What if none of these ways work? D. Luckily, there may be some ways to avoid an earworm. E. A study shows that 90 percent of people experience earworms. F. Her family was having breakfast. Mom praised the beautiful dress and was shocked that Ella sewed (缝制) it all alone. Her dad said he was really proud of her. Her twin sister was surprised because Ella worked on the dress in secret for two weeks. Her two brothers also said it looked amazing. This made Ella’s heart full of joy. She had worked on the dress for two weeks and met many difficulties, but she felt it was all worth it. She believed it was going to be a great day. At school, many classmates praised Ella’s dress. This made Ella even happier. During the last break, Ella sat on the swing, dreaming of having her own style one day. When the bell rang, Ella jumped off the swing. Suddenly, she heard a loud sound. Her dress had torn (撕裂) all the way down the back! Ella felt embarrassed, thinking she had made a bad dress. Ella stayed outside, holding her torn dress. Then she took off her own long sweater and helped Ella put it on to cover the torn dress. When Ella got home, she told her mother everything, feeling it was a terrible day. The idea of low material needs and being willing to accept whatever life gives them is described as a “lying down” lifestyle. Some young people complain that raising a child needs too much money and they often get into fights with their family. At the same time, the rising living costs including food and housing have pushed them so hard that they could hardly breathe. Some want to lie down because their tiring jobs, competition with peers, as well as personal relationships make them want to escape. On the other hand, with the great improvement of living conditions, it is true that some Chinese youth today have lost the spirit of fighting hard for a better life. “I stay at home, sleep and watch TV series, and I’m pleased with what I have now. Actually, there are many people around me who value happiness and freedom most,” said Daisy, who left her job two weeks ago. No wonder that some young people would choose to live a simple life instead of always following the good quality of fighting hard. Interestingly, most young people, who are “big fans” of the “lying down” lifestyle, point out that they only accept a temporary (暂时的) lying down as a short rest. In fact, lying down is not totally comfortable for them. Most young people who lie down always regard it as a lack of ambition (抱负) and feel ashamed about it. “Young people have both ambition and confusion about their future, but most of us have refused to waste chances and challenges,” a college student said. 44. What are Paragraphs 2-3 mainly about? ___________________________________________________________ 45. Do you think the “lying down” lifestyle is the best way to deal with difficulties in your life? Why or why not? (at least 20 words) ___________________________________________________________ 46. 根据短文内容填空(每空一词) “Lying down”, also called tang ping, has become a popular term among Chinese people. A. after B. when C. if D. unless 【答案】1. A 2. D 3. B 4. D 5. B 6. C 7. A 8. B 9. C 10. 后文“It felt like suffering after suffering.” “What’s the point?” look after“照顾”、show off“炫耀”、push for“推动”均不符合主旨。 through“通过”、over“在……上”、during“在……期间”均不符合。 【6题详解】 句意:重要的是,知道某个地方的某个人,可能听到我的故事并想:“我不是孤独的。我不是唯一一个有自我怀疑的人。” “What matters is ...” “I’m not the only one who has self-doubt.” mad“发疯的”、poor“贫穷的”、terrible“糟糕的”与后文“the only one”不对应。 Ⅴ. 阅读理解(本题20小题,每小题2分,共40分) A Golden apples hanging on the backyard tree finally made me understand my father’s silent love. Social Meanings Reflected in Chinese Roofs 【答案】16. C 17. C 18. B 19. A 20. Different roof styles developed in different dynasties, each with special features and uses.” 根据文章第五段“its side walls rise higher than the roof, covering the roof at both ends and making the building safer from fire.” It became the most common style at that time.” 根据文章第六段“It has no flat ridge. Instead, all sides meet at a point at the top.” C You may feel that math is difficult and boring. D 22. B 23. B 24. B 25. 根据“Many people today want to have beautiful looks. The ratio (比例) of these two numbers is always around 0.618. This is the golden ratio, which can be seen everywhere, like in nature, music and paintings.” 根据“In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers. As Li Bai wrote…all these numbers show how fast Li Bai traveled and how happy he felt.” 根据“‘Tangent curve’ (正切曲线) is like a waterfall, just as Li Bai wrote, ‘dashing (冲) down three thousand feet from on high’.” 根据“Take the Pythagorean theorem for instance: in a right-angled triangle, the square of the longest side equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides.” 根据“Li Xing, a math professor at Ning Xia University, thinks math can be beautiful and fun. E.
