"Kevin!Kevin!Did you hear what I said?"Ms.Reed,the band director,looked straight at him-she wanted
him to take Robin's place, since Robin had broken her arm,and play a solo (at the concert.Kevin agreed,
trying hard to hide his sadness:he was terrified of performing on stage, freezing up completely when playing alone,
even though he was the best saxophone player in his middle school band and played with the senior high band too.
James, his bandmate, felt sorry for him and shared how he'd fainted on stage during a solo because he was so
nervous. The story only made Kevin more worried, but something worse was coming.Kelly, the overly competitive top
flutist in the state, stopped him, saying that the Youth Symphony director would come to the concert to listen to his solo
-and if he played well,he could get a chance to try out.Her words made him feel heavy inside;he'd wanted to join
the Youth Symphony for a long time but never had the courage to audition.
Running out of the school,Kevin thought of excuses to skip the solo:pretending to be ill, saying he'd hurt his
finger. But he knew his parents would see he was lying, and hurting his finger on purpose was too dangerous.By the
time he got home, his mom was very happy, talking excitedly about the Youth Symphony chance and Ms.Reed's praise.
Kevin lied that his day was okay, then went down to the furnace room-called "Kevin's Dungeon"-his practice
space. He picked up his saxophone, took a deep breath, and started to play.
This time,he didn't focus on the fear of messing up;he focused on the music he loved.Maybe this solo wasn't a
nightmare-it was a chance to turn his dream into reality.
The final note faded, and loud applause burst out.Kevin smiled and felt a warm rush of joy in his heart. He
finally understood that courage isn't the lack of fear, but going ahead in spite of it.Dreams never come to those who
run away from challenges;they always wait for those who dare to face their fears and try.
56.Why did Ms.Reed ask Kevin to play the solo at the concert?

59.We can infer from the last paragraph that Kevin finally chose to

Now,children who are recovering from a long-term illnesses in the hospital or at home may have a high-tech
friend to help feel less lonely. And that friend is a robot called AV1.AV1 goes to school for a child who is homebound
while recovering from a long-term illness. And the child's school friends must help. They carry the robot between
classes and place the robot on the child's desk.
A Norwegian company called No Isolation created the robot. The co-founders of No Isolation are Karen Dolva
and Marius Aabel.Dolva explains how the robot AV1 works. She says from home, the child uses a tablet or phone to
start the robot. Then he uses the same device to control the robot's movements. At school, the robot becomes the eyes,
ears and voice of the child."So,it sits at the child's desk in the classroom and the child uses a tablet or a phone to start
it,control its movement with touch, and talk through it."
The student can partake in classroom activities from wherever he is recovering. The robot is equipped with
speakers, microphones and cameras that make communicating easy."It has speakers and microphones and cameras,
and when the child speaks at home or in the hospital to his iPad it just comes out."
This smooth interaction helps the child keep up with lessons, join group discussions freely and even share small
joys with peers in class. It well narrows the distance between their recovery place and school, letting them stay closely
linked to campus life instead of being left out alone.
The robot is designed to be tough. It is water proof and can take a fall from a desk without damage.Inside Avl,
there is a small computer connected to 5G network.A small camern connected to a small computer could do the job.
But that would not be the same.AV1 is large and looks like a human for a reason.Dolva says this is important because
the robot is supposed to be a friend to the children.Hopefully AVI will help some children feel less lonely while they
are absent from class.

It is said that most people have no more than 30 friends at any given time, and 400 over the whole of their lives.
However,on social networking sites, most users have about 150 friends. If these numbers are correct, then friendship
means different things in different situations.
Also, there are no rules about friendship. There are no instructions about how to make friends, how to keep
friendships going, and how to finish friendships if we want to move on.People have very different opinions about this:
some people would die for their friends and they value them more than family.Others say that friends are temporary,
only there to help each other until they are no longer needed. If people with such different views become friends, this
can lead to problems.
Because of these different definitions of friendship,it is easy to be unhappy about our friendships. We may want
them to be deeper or closer,or we may want to have more friends in our lives.Sometimes we simply do not have the
time to develop our friendships,or we worry we have left it too late in life to start. If we move to another country or
city,we have to find ways to make new friends again.
This dissatisfaction shows us how important friendships are for most of us.We should not think that it could be
too late to build friendships. We also need to understand that the need to be around other people is one that is shared by
most of us.Therefore,we should not be too frightened about starting to talk to people who in the future may become
our friends:it is likely that they too would like to get closer to us.Remember what people say:strangers are friends we
have not met yet.
66.According to the text, how many friends do the majority of people probably have?
A.Less 400 friends in their whole lives.
B.30 friends or fewer at a certain stage.
C.400 Internet friends in their whole lives.
D.150 Internet friends at a certain stage.
67.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.There is a rule about making friends.
B.People with different views can become friends.
C.Friendships mean different things to different people.
D.Some people would die for their friends if they need to.
68.Sometimes people worry because
A.they fear that there may be problems
B.they think they are too old to make friends
C.they think that they have too many friends
D.they spend too much time with friends
69.We can learn from the text that most of us
A.need to be with others
B.build friendships late in life
C.are dissatisfied with our friends
D.are frightened to talk to strangers
70.What is the author's attitude towards talking to a stranger?
A.Uninterested.
B.Cautious.
C.Doubtful
D.Positive.

五、阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分)
阅读短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
You may think kids are getting more homework than ever before. If so,think again.A new study by Brookings'
Brown Center on Education Policy shows that today's students have no more homework than their parents did when
they were in school.
The study's author,Tom Loveless, reviewed surveys taken by kids and parents about how much homework
young students have. The results showed that the typical elementary student has 30-45 minutes of homework each
night. The average high-schooler has about an hour. These numbers have remained the same since 1984.
In a set of guidelines published by the National Parent Teacher Association(PTA),the amount of time students
should spend on homework is their grade level multiplied by ten minutes. For example,a third-grader should have 30
minutes of homework,a fifth-grader 50 minutes,and so on.Loveless,who was a sixth-grade teacher in the 1980s,says
this system has stayed consistent into the 21st century.
Homework is-an important part of a student's education. Some teachers argue that homework prepares kids for
state tests and-for college. They worry that a lighter homework load will put kids at a disadvantage."Homework has
benefits that go well beyond what's going on in school,"says Harris Cooper,a University of Missouri psychology
professor-who has studied-homework's effect on test scores.Kids learn to be organized, manage their time and master
new skills without a teacher's help.
Teachers give two reasons for assigning a lot of homework.First, they say,the government now requires schools
to meet higher-than-ever achievement goals for students.Second, they know many parents want their children to be
able to get into the nation's best colleges and universities. These parents believe homework is a way to ensure students
are learning at their full capacity(能力).
71.What was the purpose of the study?(no more than 15 words)
72.How long should a fourth-grader spend on his homework?(no more than 5 words)
73.What does"consistent"in Paragraph 3 mean in English?(no more than 5 words)
74.What's Paragraph 4 mainly about?(no more than 5 words)
75.What do you think of doing homework? And why?(no more than 20 words)
