On Sundays, my father always wore that gray apron (围裙) after breakfast. For the next hour, Dad did the dishes, singing songs like I Had a Hat When I Came in.

I thought it was strange for a man to wear an apron.

My father seemed happy as we walked home from the supermarket together. “Tommy,” he said, “there comes a time in every boy’s life when he must take on responsibilities (责任). My father came back into the kitchen later, and in his right hand was the old apron. “I want you to have this, Tommy. It’ll keep your clothes from getting wet.” Before I could say a word, he had put it on me. “Thanks, son.”

I looked down at the apron. I could see my dad going out of the kitchen. Soon I was singing I Had a Hat When I Came in. And I knew the kind of man I wanted to be.

Most children don’t enjoy doing chores. They like playing games better than cleaning the rooms. But in Australia, Jim and Robert’s mother, Mrs. Black, has nice and correct methods to get their children to do housework.
