A famous story from New Book of Tang tells of Yang Yuhuan. She loved lychees (荔枝), a fruit that grew in faraway southern China and would easily go bad during transportation. To make her happy, Emperor Xuanzong ordered the riders to bring lychees to Chang’an. When the lychees finally arrived, they were still fresh. This makes people surprised at how fast the ancient postal (邮政的) system was!
In fact, China’s postal system started over 3,000 years ago in the Zhou Dynasty. Workers called “Xingfu” carried government orders and army messages. At that time, many places had institutions (机构) similar to post stations, but with different names. When the Qin State unified China, it made them use the same name—“You”, which is still used in China’s postal industry today.
While the postal system was well-developed during the Qin and Han dynasties, only the government could use it. Ordinary people had to depend on friends or family to send letters and other things.
During the Sui and Tang dynasties, the postal system took shape, centered around the capital and reaching all parts of the country. The poet Cen Shen wrote, “One post station after another, the post riders flow like stars, setting off from Xianyang in the morning and reaching the top of Mount Longshan in the evening. ” This highly developed system allowed Yang to get her fresh lychees.

Scientists tell how healthy rainforests are by listening to the sounds of their wildlife. A healthy forest is alive with animal calls and birdsong but an unhealthy forest is much quieter. However, that is a big job. Researchers can make thousands of hours of recordings but then someone has to listen to them all and pick out the different animal and bird calls.
What if that someone is an AI? Scientists are using AI technology to help with the task. Through the new Forest Listeners web experiment, scientists want people around the world—including you—to help too.
The site gets you to move around a virtual (虚拟的) forest, listening for wildlife. When you find a new species (物种), you listen to its song until you can remember it. The next step is to listen to real forest recordings (there are more than 1.2 million of them), and decide for each one whether you can tell that animal call or not, or if you’ re not sure.
The answers people give are then used to train AI to tell what animals they are by their sounds. Scientists say that the project helps them process (处理) a huge number of recordings. Without AI, it would take many years to study them all. “Every sound tagged (贴标签) by a forest listener helps train our AI models,” the scientists said. “This group effort provides us with valuable information, allowing us to find out small changes in species’ presence and behavior. These are important signs for a healthy forest.”

a. Give information to train AI.
b. Listen for wildlife in a virtual forest.
c. Listen to real forests and tag each sound.
A. a-b-c B. c-a-b C. a-c-b D. b-c-a
54. How does AI help the scientists?
A. By dealing with recordings quickly. B. By remembering new species’ sounds.
C. By inviting more people to care for forests. D. By finding more kinds of wildlife in the forests.
55. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Forests are in danger now.

八、任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1.5分,满分15分)
In many classrooms around the world, students are good at listening and answering, but few of them have the courage to ask questions. Teachers often finish a lesson with “Any questions?” only to hear silence. Yet asking questions is one of the most powerful tools we have for learning.
Why are questions so important? A question shows that you are not just copying but thinking. It helps you find the gaps in your understanding before the exam does. Research in education also shows that students who ask questions remember answers longer than those who simply hear them. In other words, a question is a key that opens the door of the mind.
Why, then, do students stay silent? Many are afraid of asking some foolish things. Some worry that their classmates will laugh, and others do not want to trouble the teacher. These fears are normal, but they have a cost: a misunderstanding that is not cleared up today often grows into a bigger problem next week.
How can we become better question-askers? First, get one question ready before class—it can be about something you did not understand in yesterday’s lesson. Second, write your questions down; the written form gives you courage. Third, start small: ask a friend first, or put your hand up when the teacher invites questions. Remember, teachers usually welcome curiosity—many even say that a good question is more valuable than a quick answer.
Teachers can help you, too. Some schools now begin lessons with a five-minute “question time”, when anyone may put a hand up. Others use a question box in the classroom, allowing shy students to write their doubts on paper. When a class learns to ask out loud, the whole atmosphere (气氛) of the lesson changes: silence turns into discussion, and a dull hour becomes a lively one.
The habit of asking does not stay in the classroom. Brave young people are more likely to speak up in a meeting, to challenge unfair rules and to create something new. The world belongs to those who question it. So the next time your teacher asks, “Any questions?”, put up your hand—and let your curiosity do the talking.

If I’m asked to describe myself with three description words, they will be honest, shy and hopeful.
First, I always tell the truth, even when it is hard. Being honest helps me win trust and keep friendships. Second, I am a bit shy. I often feel nervous when speaking in front of the class, so I am trying to join more group activities to become braver. Finally, I am hopeful about the future. I believe that as long as I keep working hard, my dream of becoming a writer will come true one day.
These three words may not be perfect, but they truly show who I am.

In the Ming Dynasty, “security escort agencies” appeared. People paid them to protect their money and safety during travel.
However, in the mid-19th century, China had to open its doors to the West. This led to big changes in the postal industry. Finally, in 1913, the ancient postal system officially came to an end.

51. What is a healthy rainforest according to the text?
A. A quiet forest. B. A forest with new species.
C. A forest full of wildlife sounds. D. A forest with fewer animal activities.
52. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in Paragraph 1?
A. Recording wildlife sounds. B. Comparing different animal calls.
C. Checking forest health by listening. D. Finding changes in the forest environment.
53. What is the right order of the experiment?
B. Helping forests is helping humans.
C. Humans together with AI protect forests.
D. AI makes it easier for people to study animal sounds.
