My mother was a therapist. Well, technically she was a hairdresser, but in reality, she was a therapist. I grew up in the salon (美发店) — sitting on the chairs after school, listening to the ladies talk about their problems, watching my mother comb and listen. She gave every one of her customers her undivided attention. When they were in the chair, she was theirs. They told her stories of cancer, marriages and everything in between. As a child, I found it strange that these women would talk so openly to my mother about such deeply personal matters.
I remember once listening to one of my mother’s customers talking to her about some financial problems she and her husband were having. In the break room later that afternoon, I made some comment about it to my mother. I do not remember what I said but I clearly remember her response: “When people share their lives with you, it means they trust you. Trust is more important than money.”
My mother died on February 14th, 1999. It was a simple burial (葬礼). But there is one image, that stands clear in my mind: the sea of faces at the service. There must have been over a hundred people that day. Among them was a man, whose wife used to be one of my mother’s customers. He came because of the special care my mother provided for his wife when she was dying of cancer. I did not find out until years later that my mother went to the hospital every morning for months to wash her, do her makeup and get her ready to face another day.
My mother was a hairdresser. She had a 4th grade education. In her lifetime, she didn’t earn millions of dollars and was not successful by today’s standards. But in my mind, she is one of the most successful women I know.
41. The underlined sentence means that the author’s mother ________.
A. was a very skilled hairdresser

42. The customers of the author’s mother ________.
A. could save much money in the salon
B. liked to share their life stories with her
C. enjoyed listening to her personal stories
D. came to the salon because of her skill
43. According to Paragraph 3, the man came to the author’s mother’s burial because ________.
A. she cured him of cancer.
B. he was one of her customers
C. his wife used to be her patient
D. she used to look after his wife.
44. Which of the following can best describe the author’s mother?
A. honest. B. reliable. C. Confident. D. Humorous.
45. What is the best title for the text?
A. My mother: a successful therapist

C. My mother: the best friend I can have
D. My mother: the greatest parent in the world
C
Are you one of those people who can tell when a storm is approaching based on the achy knees? Well, you may think you are. But a study of more than 1.5 million seniors finds no relationship between rainfall and doctor visits for pain. The idea that our bodies are barometers (气压计) for all sorts of weather-related phenomena is not a new one.
Anupam Jena, who led the study said, “If you talk to people, I’d say millions and millions of people probably believe that things like rainfall cause symptoms (症状) of joint pain and stiffness (僵硬). But if you look at the studies, there’s actually been surprisingly little evidence to suggest that joint pain has something to do with rainfall.”
Most of the studies have been quite small. And we were interested in thinking about whether we could approach this question in a big data sort of way. He and his colleagues looked at information collected in more than 11 million visits that older Americans made to their primary care physicians. They compared these records with data on daily rainfall. And what they found is if you look at days when it rained compared with days when it didn’t rain, there is no difference in the proportion (比例) of visits to a doctor that involved a complaint of joint pain or back pain. They saw no “rain effect” even when it poured for seven days straight.
And if you look at the week after a period of heavy rainfall, you still see no relationship. And that doesn’t mean that factors like rainfall or temperature don’t affect joint pain or symptoms of joint stiffness. But in this sort of big data approach, they didn’t find any evidence for it. Of course, it could still be that the pain from rain is not enough to complain. It could be that patients take over-the-counter (不需处方可出售的) painkillers once these symptoms hit, and so when they see their doctor they’re not actually in enough pain to mention it.
46. What do Anupam Jena’s words indicate?
A. Seeing is believing.
B. Truth is in the hands of a few.
C. Belief and truth may be two different things.
D. We should be prepared for a rainy day.
47. How did Anupam Jena carry out his research?
A. By analyzing the “big data” on the Internet.
B. By surveying “rain effect” online.
C. By visiting their primary care physicians.
D. By comparing doctor visits with daily rainfall data.
48. What did Anupam Jena and his colleagues find?
A. Weather can stop people who suffer joint pain from visiting doctors.
B. People go to hospital more frequently on rainy days than on sunny days.
C. It’s hard for patients to make an appointment with doctors on rainy days.
D. There is no evidence in big data to show rainfall has a relationship with joint pain.
49. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Painkillers are not allowed to be used when the pain is not serious.
B. Patients may take painkillers first when they suffer joint pain.
C. Weather-related phenomena have a strong influence on people.
D. Painkillers make patients tell a lie when they see their doctors.
50. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Pain and weather fail to connect.
B. Some people can predict rainfall.
C. The achy knees predict the coming storm.
D. The relationship between pain and rainfall is clear.
D
It’s human nature to enjoy playing. From board games to sports, games have been a significant part of human culture for a very long time. Since their invention in the mid-20th century, video games have become one of the most popular ways to have fun. In 2018, UK games spent an average of over seven hours a week playing, according to research by global network provider Limelight. But how much is too much? When does fun turn into an addiction? Are we addicted to video games?
“The strong desire to play never disappears,” said Sean - not his real name - on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire programme. His deep interest in gaming once led him to play for 48 hours straight. It consumed him to the point where he neglected his family and children, spending all his time on gaming and ignoring their needs, which ultimately led to losing them, his job, and his home. Since then, he has entered a rehabilitation center, and although he slipped back into gaming once or twice, he has been doing well for the last 14 months.
Sean is not alone. The UK Addiction Treatment group reported that the number of people seeking treatment for gaming addiction grew from four in 2014 to 22 in 2018. In 2018, the World Health Organization classified gaming addiction as an illness. In the UK, an investigation into technology addiction by the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee included statements from people who said they were addicted to games. One, Matus Mikus, said, “games are naturally addictive.”
However, the association for UK Interactive Entertainment told the committee that there was not enough evidence to support the claim of addiction. They argued that gaming could be beneficial, for example, by developing thinking skills. In fact, in a 2018 BBC article, Dr. Rajin Chowdhury, who works in an aesthetic and intensive care at Sheffield Teaching Hospital, shared a similar view. Gaming, he said, made him more skillful with his hands, improved his ability to use his hands and eyes together effectively, and helped with operations performed remotely by looking at a screen, especially when the controls were complex.
Are video games addictive? The answer is unclear. As with many things, balance is important. The games themselves may not be the problem, but letting them negatively impact our lives certainly is. With that in mind, play well, have fun, and remember to take regular breaks.
51. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To criticize the impact of video games on society.
B. To introduce the topic of video games and their popularity.
C. To provide information about how much people play games.
D. To explain the history of video games.
52. The underlined word “neglected” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.
A. Ignored B. Supported C. Watched D. Disliked
53. What does the third paragraph mainly discuss?
A. The benefits of gaming. B. The popularity of video games.
C. The fun of playing video games. D. The rise in gaming addiction cases.
54. What does the association claim about gaming?
A. It is harmful. B. It causes addiction. C. It has benefits. D. It is expensive.
55. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Video Games: A New Form of Entertainment
B. Video Games: Addiction or Benefit?
C. The Dark Side of Video Game Addiction
D. How to Deal with Video Game Addiction
In a recent business magazine, a president said laughter in the workplace is a waste of time. This is a place to do business, not to laugh. Some researchers, however, disagree with his words. As scientists have learned more about the brain, they’ve discovered that smiles and laughter stimulate (刺激) the brain, which can help increase happiness and reduce pain.
Why do we need laughter in our lives? Laughter is a powerful tool for our health. In a number of studies that were carried out, it was shown that people who are more humorous have stronger immune systems (免疫系统) while people who feel stressed have weaker immune systems. Humor can help make your immune systems stronger, thus keeping you healthier.
Here are some tips to add more humor to your life:
Laugh at yourself. Don’t take yourself too seriously. Have a positive attitude towards yourself and your worries will become lighter too.
Don’t worry when people laugh — just appreciate it. Be funny. Look for the humorous side of an otherwise difficult situation.
Prepare a first-aid laughter source. This could include books, cartoons, CDs or videos. Write down the amusing things that happen and save them for a sad day.
Be open to silly things. Humor is the child within yourself. Laugh with others for what they do, rather than what they are.
Research has shown that laughter is indeed the best medicine, so make time for humor now.
56. How do people benefit from laughter according to the passage? (No more than 15 words)

A. she cured him of cancer.

C. his wife used to be her patient

But if you look at the studies, there’s actually been surprisingly little evidence to suggest that joint pain has something to do with rainfall.”
根据第三段“He and his colleagues looked at information collected in more than 11 million visits that older Americans made to their primary care physicians. They compared these records with data on daily rainfall. (他和他的同事们查看了美国老年人在初级保健医生处就诊超过1100万次的信息。他们将这些记录与每日降雨数据进行了比较)”可知,Anupam Jena是通过将看医生的记录与每日降雨数据对比来开展研究的。故选D项。
【48题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“And what they found is if you look at days when it rained compared with days when it didn’t rain, there is no difference in the proportion (比例) of visits to a doctor that involved a complaint of joint pain or back pain. (他们发现,与不下雨的日子相比,在下雨的日子里,因关节疼痛或背痛而看医生的比例没有差异)”可知,Anupam Jena和他的同事发现大数据中没有证据表明降雨与关节疼痛有关。故选D项。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Of course, it could still be that the pain from rain is not enough to complain. It could be that patients take over-the-counter (不需处方可出售的) painkillers once these symptoms hit, and so when they see their doctor they’re not actually in enough pain to mention it. (当然,也有可能是雨天的疼痛不足以让人抱怨,也有可能是患者一旦出现这些症状就会服用非处方止痛药,所以当他们去看医生时,他们实际上并没有痛到要提到这一点)”可知,患者在关节疼痛时可能会先服用止痛药。故选B项。
【50题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“But a study of more than 1.5 million seniors finds no relationship between rainfall and doctor visits for pain. (但一项对 150 多万老年人的研究发现,降雨和因疼痛就医之间没有关系)”、第二段“there’s actually been surprisingly little evidence to suggest that joint pain has something to do with rainfall (实际上几乎没有证据表明关节疼痛与降雨有关)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了关节疼痛和降雨之间并没有联系。故选A项。

根据第一段“It’s human nature to enjoy playing.
故选A项。
根据第三段“The UK Addiction Treatment group reported that the number of people seeking treatment for gaming addiction grew from four in 2014 to 22 in 2018. In 2018, the World Health Organization classified gaming addiction as an illness. (英国成瘾治疗组织报告称,寻求游戏成瘾治疗的人数从2014年的4人增加到2018年的22人。2018年,世界卫生组织将游戏成瘾列为一种疾病。)”可知,该段主要讲述了英国寻求游戏成瘾治疗的人数增长以及世界卫生组织将游戏成瘾列为疾病,即主要讨论游戏成瘾案例的增加。故选D项。
【54题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“However, the association for UK Interactive Entertainment told the committee that there was not enough evidence to support the claim of addiction. They argued that gaming could be beneficial, for example, by developing thinking skills.

Li Jin
Dear Chris,
I’m glad to receive your email. It’s my pleasure to tell you something about our school sports meeting, which ended last Friday.
The sports meeting was held to encourage us to build up our body and develop the spirit of teamwork. It lasted two days and all classes took an active part in different events. What impressed me most was a girl runner in the 800-metre race. She fell down halfway and hurt her knee badly. Instead of giving up, she stood up and kept running to the finishing line. All of us cheered loudly for her courage and many classmates rushed to offer help after she crossed the line.
This activity really inspired me. It not only gave us a chance to relax from heavy study, but also taught me that perseverance matters more than winning. I hope we can share more wonderful school activities later.
Yours sincerely,
Li Jin
