Objectives:

Language Ability:

1. Ss can master key vocabulary and phrases such as "balance", "courage", "wisdom", "design", "look up to", "take/lose courage", and "keep a balance between...".

2. Ss can distinguish the usage of the easily confused words "live", "living", "lively", and "alive" in specific contexts.

3. Ss can understand the grammatical function of appositives (同位语) and use them to introduce people.

4. Ss can use the target structure "It is + adj. + of sb. + to do sth." to describe and evaluate inspiring people.

5. Ss can use reading strategies to catch the main idea and extract detailed information from the conversation in 3a to complete a chart.

6. Ss can role-play the conversation fluently, paying attention to pronunciation, intonation, and emotion.

Teaching Procedures:

 

Step 1. Lead - in & Review

1). Review the survey of Gina's family members. Ask Ss to recall the achievements of Isambard Brunel, Florence Nightingale, etc.

2). Free talk: Ask Ss questions: "Who is the person you admire the most? Why? What does he/she do?"

3). Look and say: Show pictures of I.M. Pei and Wang Yaping. Ask Ss what they know about them.

 

Step 2. While - reading

1). Fast reading: Let Ss read the conversation quickly and answer: "What are they talking about?" (Answer: They are talking about the people they admire the most).

2). Careful reading (Activity 3a): Let Ss read carefully and complete the chart about the three inspiring figures.

   - I.M. Pei (admired by Yaming): Designed the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum and the Suzhou Museum; created a beautiful balance between the East and the West. (Qualities: creative)

   - Wang Yaping (admired by Chen Jie): China's first woman to walk in space; taught a live class from space. (Qualities: full of courage and wisdom)

   - Adam's father (admired by Adam): Supports and encourages Adam's exchange study. (Qualities: nice, supportive)

3). Read and judge: Check Ss' understanding with True or False statements.

   - Q1: Wang Yaping is China's second woman to walk in space.
