For most of my life, I was the quiet girl at the back of the classroom. I had plenty of ideas, but whenever a teacher asked me a question, my face turned red and my mind went blank. So when my English teacher, Ms. Carter, suggested that I join the school’s new improvised comedy (即兴喜剧) club, I almost laughed — out of fear, not fun.
“Improvised comedy is about making things up on the spot,” she explained. “There is no script and no wrong answer.” To me, that sounded like a nightmare. However, she asked me to come to just one meeting. If I hated it, I would never have to go back.
The night before the meeting, I almost changed my mind. I made a list of excuses — I had homework, I had a headache, I had to help my mom. In the end, it was my little brother who pushed me out of the door. “You always tell me to try new things,” he said. “Now it’s your turn.”
At the first meeting, we played a game called “Yes, and…”. One person says a sentence, and the next person must accept it and add something new. When my turn came, my partner said, “Look! Our teacher has turned into a giant banana!” I froze. Then, with my heart beating fast, I said, “Yes, and now we have to find a monkey to save her!” The whole room burst into laughter. Nobody was laughing at me; they were laughing with me. It was the first time I had enjoyed that kind of laughter.
Week after week, I went back. I learned that a mistake on stage was not the end of the world. In fact, some of our funniest moments came from mistakes. Slowly, the “Yes, and…” attitude found its way into the rest of my life. I began to answer questions in class, and I even ran for class monitor — and won.
Looking back, I realize the club didn’t change who I am. It just helped me discover a part of myself that had always been there.
24.Why did the author almost laugh at Ms. Carter’s suggestion?
A. She thought it was a joke. B. She was afraid of performing.
C. She had no interest in comedy. D. She was too busy to join a club.
25.What is the rule of the game “Yes, and…”?
A. Players must tell a funny story alone.
B. Players have to follow a written script.
C. Players accept what others say and build on it.
D. Players should correct their partners’ mistakes.
26.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 suggest?
A. Her classmates were rude to her. B. The others enjoyed her humor.
C. She felt embarrassed by the noise. D. Her partner made a big mistake.
27.What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why every school needs a comedy club.
B. How a teacher trained a girl to be a comedian.
C. Why mistakes on stage are often funny.
D. How improvised comedy helped a shy girl find her confidence.
C
“I’m just not good at math.” “I’ll never be able to speak English like that.” Many students say such things after a poor exam result. But according to psychologist Carol Dweck of Stanford University, such words may do more harm than the failure itself.
After years of research, Dweck found that people generally hold one of two beliefs about their abilities. Those with a “fixed mindset” believe that intelligence and talent are set at birth. For them, every failure is proof that they are simply not clever enough, so they tend to avoid challenges and give up easily. In contrast, people with a “growth mindset” believe that abilities can be developed through effort, good methods and help from others. To them, a failure is not a judgment but a piece of information: it tells them what they need to work on next.
Dweck suggests a simple but powerful change in language: adding the word “yet”. “I can’t solve this problem” becomes “I can’t solve this problem yet.” This small word turns a dead end into a path. It reminds us that learning is a journey, and that we are somewhere along the way rather than at the finish line.
However, a growth mindset is often misunderstood. It does not simply mean praising effort, or telling students that they can do anything if they try hard. Working hard with the wrong method again and again rarely leads to progress. For example, a student who keeps reading the same textbook over and over may still fail the next test. What really matters is being willing to try new methods, ask for advice and learn from mistakes.
Teachers and parents play an important role here. When a child brings home a poor grade, asking “What did you learn from this?” or “What will you try differently next time?” is more useful than saying “Never mind, maybe you’re just not a math person.”
After all, the road upwards is rarely straight. Those who keep climbing are not those who never fall, but those who know how to get up and try another way.
28.Why does the author quote the students’ words in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To show students’ poor results.
C. To prove that math is difficult. D. To criticize lazy students.
29.What does the underlined phrase “a dead end” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. A narrow road. B. A starting point.
C. A hard decision. D. A situation with no way forward.
30.Which of the following shows a growth mindset?
A. “I’ll never be good at drawing.” B. “Effort alone guarantees success.”
C. “I can’t play the piano well yet.” D. “Talent is decided at birth.”
31.What does the author advise parents to do when their child gets a poor grade?
A. Praise the child’s hard work.
B. Help the child think about what to improve.
C. Tell the child that grades don’t matter.
D. Point out the child’s weak subjects.

Can animals sense an earthquake before it happens? For centuries, people have told stories of dogs barking, birds flying away and snakes leaving their holes just before the ground began to shake. Some pet owners even say their cats hid under the bed hours before a quake. Scientists, however, have long doubted these stories, because most of them were collected only after an earthquake had taken place.
To find out whether there is any truth in them, a team led by Martin Wikelski, a German scientist who studies animal movement, carried out an experiment on a farm in central Italy, an area where earthquakes are common. The researchers fixed small sensors to the collars of cows, sheep and dogs, and recorded how they moved, day and night, for several months. The sensors sent data to the researchers every few minutes.
During that time, the area experienced thousands of small earthquakes. When the team compared the animals’ activity with the earthquake records, they noticed a pattern: the animals became unusually active up to 20 hours before a quake. The closer the animals were to the center of the coming earthquake, the earlier they started to act strangely. Interestingly, the change was clearer when the animals were together in the barn than when they were alone in the fields.
The team doesn’t yet know what the animals sense. Many animals have much sharper noses and ears than humans, so they may notice small changes that we cannot. One possible explanation is that they may feel changes in the air caused by rocks under great pressure deep underground.
The findings are exciting, but the scientists warn that more research is needed. The study covered only one farm, and the number of animals was small, so it is too early to say that animals can predict earthquakes. Earthquakes are hard to predict, and even a few hours’ warning could save many lives. Wikelski hopes that one day, animals wearing sensors could become part of a warning system, giving people valuable time to get to safety.
32.Why did scientists doubt the stories about animals and earthquakes?
A. They were told by farmers.
B. They were only about wild animals.
C. They were too old to be true.
D. They were collected after earthquakes.
33.What did the team find?
A. Animals far from the center reacted earlier.
B. Animals acted strangely only at night.
C. Animals reacted more clearly in groups.
D. Dogs were more sensitive than cows.
34.What is the scientists’ attitude toward the findings?
A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Disappointed. D. Uninterested.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Can Animals Warn Us of Earthquakes?
B. Why Do Earthquakes Happen?
C. How to Protect Farm Animals
D. A New Warning System Is Built

How to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Your comfort zone is the place where you feel safe and in control. You know what to expect there, and nothing seems too difficult. Many of us stay there for years without even noticing it. Staying there is easy, but it doesn’t help you grow. 36_________. Here are some ways to help you take the first step.
● Start small. You don’t have to climb a mountain or travel alone to another country right away. 37_________. For example, try a new dish, take a different way to school, or say hello to someone you don’t know. These small changes will slowly make you more comfortable with the unknown. Over time, bigger challenges will seem less scary.
● Ask yourself “What’s the worst that could happen?” Often, our fear is much bigger than the real danger. 38_________. In most cases, you will find that the worst result is something you can easily deal with. Once you know this, the challenge will look much less frightening.
● 39_________. When you are trying something new, it’s normal to feel nervous. Your heart may beat faster and your hands may shake. Instead of fighting the feeling, tell yourself that it is a sign of growth, not a signal to stop.
● Find a partner. Choose a friend who also wants to try new things. Taking on a challenge with a friend can make it less frightening and more fun. 40_________. Later, you can look back on the experience together and laugh about how worried you once were.
Stepping out of your comfort zone is never easy, but every small step will lead you to a bigger and more exciting world. So why not start today?
A. Accept that fear is part of the process.
B. Just pick something a little different from your daily routine.
C. Your friend can also encourage you when you feel like giving up.
D. In fact, real progress only happens when you dare to try new things.
E. Write down your fears and think about how you would handle them.
F. Many people enjoy traveling to faraway places.
G. Never tell others about your plans before you succeed.

The Mogao Caves, 56 (locate) near Dunhuang in Gansu Province, are one of the greatest treasures of Chinese art. Over a period of about 1,000 years, artists created more than 700 caves and filled them with colorful wall paintings and 57 (statue). Most of the caves were built between the 4th and the 14th centuries. Today, about 45,000 square meters of murals (壁画) remain, 58 makes the caves one of the largest art collections in the world.
However, time, wind and sand have caused serious damage 59 these works of art. In 1943, a young artist named Chang Shuhong came to Dunhuang and spent about 40 years protecting the caves. He and his team lived in 60 (extreme) hard conditions, but they never gave up. They repaired damaged caves and copied the murals by hand.
In recent years, modern technology has made the 61 (protect) of the caves much 62 (easy) than before. Experts have taken high-quality photos of the murals and turned them into digital files. Since the “Digital Dunhuang” project started, more and more of these images 63 (put) online. Now people around the world can enjoy the art without 64_________ (visit) the caves in person. Some caves can even be explored in 3D.
For people like Fan Jinshi, who is known as 65 “Daughter of Dunhuang”, protecting the caves is a task that will never end.

Tom was sixteen, and he had always thought of his little brother Sam as a trouble-maker. Sam was ten. He talked too much, asked too many questions and never listened to Tom. He often borrowed Tom’s things without asking and sometimes broke them. So when their parents asked Tom to take Sam on a hike up Green Hill one Saturday afternoon, Tom wasn’t happy at all. He had planned to play basketball with his friends.
Before they left, their father handed Tom a small backpack with water, sandwiches and a flashlight. “Stay on the path,” he said. “And remember, if you ever get lost in the hills, follow the stream downhill. It always leads back to town.” Tom nodded without really listening.
The first part of the hike went well. The sun was shining, birds were singing, and Sam ran ahead, picking up interesting stones and leaves. At the top of the hill, the two brothers sat down, ate their sandwiches and enjoyed the beautiful view. For a moment, Tom even thought that having a little brother wasn’t so bad.
On the way down, Sam saw a rabbit and ran after it into the woods. Tom shouted at him to stop and hurried after him. By the time Tom caught up with him, they had left the path far behind. All the trees looked the same. Tom took out his phone. There was no signal, and the battery was almost dead.
The sun was going down, and the air was getting cold. Sam’s face turned pale. “Tom, are we lost?” he asked in a small voice. “It’s all my fault.” Tom felt his heart beating fast. He was scared too, but when he saw the tears in his brother’s eyes, he knew he couldn’t show it.

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to invite you to be a judge for the English Comedy Sketch Contest, which will be held in our school hall at 3:00 p.m. next Friday.
Ten teams of students will take part in the contest. Each team will perform a five-minute humorous sketch in English based on stories from school life. As a native speaker with a great sense of humor, you are the perfect person to judge their performances, especially their pronunciation and acting. After the contest, you could also give us a short talk on how to make people laugh in English.
It would be a great honor to have you with us. I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
Paragraph 1
Tom took a deep breath and tried to stay calm. He held Sam’s hand and said, “Don’t worry. We’ll find the way home together.” Then he remembered their father’s words: follow the stream downhill. He listened carefully and soon heard the sound of running water. “Let’s follow the water,” he said. As it got darker, Tom took out the flashlight and walked in front. When Sam got too tired to walk, Tom carried him on his back and told him funny stories to keep him from being afraid. Before long, they found the path again.
Paragraph 2
When they finally saw the lights of their town, Sam held Tom’s hand tightly. Their worried parents were waiting at the foot of the hill and rushed over to hug them. “I’m sorry I ran away,” Sam said. “But Tom was so brave. He’s the best brother in the world!” Tom smiled and touched his little brother’s head. At that moment, he realized that Sam was not a trouble-maker at all, but someone he loved and wanted to protect. From that day on, the two brothers became closer than ever.

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to invite you to be a judge for the English Comedy Sketch Contest, which will be held in our school hall at 3:00 p.m. next Friday.

A篇: 21-23:A D C
根据Street Photography部分“Take your camera (or phone) out into the city and learn how to tell stories through pictures.” 故选A。
根据Comic Drawing部分“Time: Fridays, March 12 – April 2, 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.”
根据Clay Sculpture部分“Price: $150”及How to Sign Up部分“Sign up before February 28 and you will get 10% off.”
根据第一段“I almost laughed — out of fear, not fun.”及第二段“To me, that sounded like a nightmare.”
根据第四段“One person says a sentence, and the next person must accept it and add something new.”
通读全文可知,文章讲述了即兴喜剧如何帮助一个害羞的女孩找到自信,最后一段“It just helped me discover a part of myself that had always been there.”
C篇: 28-31:A D C B
故选A。
根据画线短语所在句“This small word turns a dead end into a path.”及下文“It reminds us that learning is a journey”可知,加上“yet”能把“死胡同”变成“道路”,由此推断a dead end意为“没有出路的处境”。故选D。
根据第三段“adding the word ‘yet’…This small word turns a dead end into a path.”可知,C项“我还不能把钢琴弹好”体现了成长型思维;A、D两项属于固定型思维;B项与第四段“It does not simply mean praising effort”不符。故选C。
根据第五段“asking ‘What did you learn from this?’ or ‘What will you try differently next time?’ is more useful”可知,作者建议家长引导孩子反思需要改进之处。故选B。
D篇: 32-35:D C B A
根据第一段“Scientists, however, have long doubted these stories, because most of them were collected only after an earthquake had taken place.”
根据第三段“Interestingly, the change was clearer when the animals were together in the barn than when they were alone in the fields.” A项与“The closer…the earlier…”
根据最后一段“the scientists warn that more research is needed…it is too early to say that animals can predict earthquakes”可知,科学家对研究结果持谨慎态度。故选B。
故选A。
36-40: D B E A C
36.D 根据上文“Staying there is easy, but it doesn’t help you grow.”及下文“Here are some ways to help you take the first step.”
及下文“For example, try a new dish, take a different way to school…”
38.E 根据上文“Ask yourself ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’”及下文“you will find that the worst result is something you can easily deal with”可知,此处建议写下恐惧并思考如何应对。
39.A 本空为小标题,根据下文“When you are trying something new, it’s normal to feel nervous.”及“Instead of fighting the feeling, tell yourself that it is a sign of growth”可知,本段讲的是接受恐惧是过程的一部分。
及上文“Taking on a challenge with a friend can make it less frightening and more fun.”
41.B 42.A 43.C 44.A 45.B
46.C 47.C 48.D 49.A 50.B
51.C 52.D 53.B 54.A 55.D
A. dropped落下;B. rushed涌入;C. dried变干;D. froze结冰。根据上文“the river had risen so quickly”可知选B。

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to invite you to be a judge for the English Comedy Sketch Contest, which will be held in our school hall at 3:00 p.m. next Friday.
Yours,
