They aren’t just learning about farm animals. They’re raising them! This is the only high school in the country that raises its own animals on campus. Addisyn Bolles has been feeding the Great Hambino — her 202-pound pig in person since it was a baby pig. “I’ve learned a lot from this program. Caring for this animal makes me responsible for another life, and this experience helps prepare me for life in many ways,” said Bolles. “In this program, we join textbook knowledge with real-life practice. In the classroom, students learn about how to raise animals, and then they can step outside and directly use what they’re learning,” said teacher Breanna Cole. There’s no sleeping in for these students. They are up early, feeding, walking and cleaning their animals in preparation to show them at the County Fair “It seems like a lot of work, and you do put a lot of time and effort into it. But it’s a great comfort at the end of the busy day, sitting quietly with the animals away from hard work, especially when you just need some quiet time to unwind,” said Nevach Cornish, a student from the school. Getting to the Fair makes all those early morning feedings worth it. “It’s really cool because at the Fair you get to meet new people, and you can get a connection with them and exchange ideas,” said Julia Santos, another student from the school. This Camarillo high school farm program isn’t just an extra class — it’s a life-shaping experience that turns textbook lessons into real doing, responsibility and joy. It’s the kind of learning more schools should look to, proving education can grow just as strongly on the farm as it does in a classroom. 1.What makes the school special? A.It develops students’ life skills. B.It has many after-school activities. C.It allows students to keep animals at school. D.It mainly offers lessons about farm animals. 2.How does the program influence the students? A.They prefer feeding animals to studying. B.They are too busy to develop other hobbies. C.They have a chance to put what they learn into use. D.They can better understand the meaning of teamwork. 3.What does the underlined word “unwind” mean? A.Compete. B.Relax. C.Hurry up. D.Keep on. 4.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.Most schools will set up farm programs soon. B.Farm education will replace traditional classes. C.Students can only learn responsibility from farm work. D.Farm-based learning is as valuable as classroom learning. Passage 2 The day I walked into Westbrook High, it seemed like every pair of eyes in the hallway somehow knew I was the new kid. Starting a new school mid year was like hitting reset on my life. At lunch that first day, I sat at the corner table pretending (假装) to be very interested in my phone while secretly searching “…how to survive being the new kid.” Teen mental (精神的) health articles kept saying the same thing — feeling nervous during a school move is normal. That helped a little, but honestly, I was still uneasy. The first week was difficult. I got lost looking for chemistry class, mispronounced a teacher’s name, and walked into the wrong classroom twice. But something small changed when a guy named Luca asked if I wanted to join his group during science lab. It was not a dramatic movie moment, just a simple “Hey, you can sit here if you want.” That one sentence made the whole day easier. One trick that helped me adjust (适应) to a new school was setting small goals. Instead of trying to make five best friends right away, I focused on simple things. Learn two classmates’ names. Join one club. Ask one question in class. Those small wins slowly made me confident. My dad also gave surprisingly good advice. He said being new can actually be an advantage because nobody has a fixed idea about you yet. You get to decide who you want to be. That thought stuck with me during the first few months. By spring, things looked very different. I joined the photography club and started hanging out with Luca. Moving schools mid year was not easy, but it taught me something important about resilience (适应力). Feeling uncomfortable does not last forever. If you are the new kid right now, hang in there. The hallway that feels strange today might become the place where your next chapter (篇章) begins. 1.What did the author do during his first lunch at Westbrook High? A.He explored his new phone. B.He went online for suggestions. C.He chatted with his new friends. D.He stayed alone to avoid attention. 2.What marked a turning point in the author’s first week? A.A classmate’s invitation. B.A special chemistry lesson. C.A teacher’s encouragement. D.A touching movie moment. 3.What did the author do to get used to the new school life? A.He set himself easy-to-achieve goals. B.He turned to his parents for comfort. C.He made an effort to get good grades. D.He tried to make a lot of new friends. 4.What advice does the author give in the last paragraph? A.Be true to yourself. B.Keep an open mind. C.Give yourself time to fit in. D.Be calm when things go wrong. Passage 3 School Life Clubs There are more than 60 clubs at Northwood High. Run by students from all class years, the following list of clubs and organizations is well worth checking out! NH TV NH TV is the school’s television station providing broadcasts (电视节目) to the student body. The club trains students in the technical aspect (方面) of television production. Watch their live morning shows every weekday beginning at 8:25 a.m. Advisor: Mr. Knight and Mr. Reilly The Corridors The Corridors is a music group of 8-10 singers chosen from Northwood High students. The Corridors members study and practice different kinds of music, such as pop, jazz, and blues. They also prepare and present a number of performances both on and off campus. Advisor: Mr. Keatley The Green Initiative The Green Initiative raises awareness about how our actions influence the environment. The initiative does this by educating its members who in turn educate the rest of the school community. Its activities include recycling efforts, hosting guest speakers, and providing service to community environmental efforts. Advisor: Mrs. Robertson Northwood High Forensics Northwood High Forensics represents (代表) leadership, teamwork, and professionalism (专业性) through public speaking. They encourage hard work and friendship as members take part in local and national speaking competitions throughout the year, learning to communicate clearly, support one another, and grow in confidence together. Advisor: Dr. Susko 1.Who can you talk to if you are interested in music? A.Mr. Knight and Mr. Reilly. B.Mr. Keatley. C.Mrs. Robertson. D.Dr. Susko. 2.What can members get from Northwood High Forensics? A.Skills in television production. B.Confidence in event organizing. C.Improvement in public speaking. D.Experience in community service. 3.What do the listed clubs have in common? A.They include more than 10 members. B.They work with the local TV station. C.They are open to the public. D.They are student-run. Passage 4 In Kenerson’s after-school classroom, Sandi takes out a piece of paper and fills up a whole line to spell words that allow her to practice cursive (草书) — her new favorite method of writing. She is a proud member of the Holmes Middle School cursive club in Virginia. Cursive has been on the rise for years now. More than two dozen states now require cursive instruction in schools after the 2010 Common Core standards left out the skill. Kenerson started the middle school club when students couldn’t read her writing on the board. They just stared at her blankly, she said. For an educator who firmly believes that quotes deserve to be written in cursive, Kenerson wanted to give students a chance to understand the magic of the cursive. The club exploded in popularity this past winter, with the Washington Post crediting it for “keeping cursive alive”. Kenerson’s after-school club is a local example of a nationwide trend — cursive handwriting is back in many classrooms across the country. Teachers and legislators credit the return to nostalgia (怀旧) and some evidence of educational benefits. But surprisingly, the curves and swoops are contentious among experts, and some argue that cursive does not add any real value for students, especially in the age of AI. “I have seen no evidence that cursive brings any particular cognitive (认知的) or learning benefit beyond that brought by hand printing,” wrote Mark.    Much of the cursive debate centers around time in the classroom. Should educators spend precious minutes teaching another way to write on paper when technology is so readily available?    Datchuk, a professor of special education at the University of Iowa, said the answer does not have to be one or the other. In his college classroom, he sees students increasingly using tablets to take notes.“What that means is that as a country, we likely need to help our students become multi-modal,” Datchuk said. They need to not only be able to handwrite using print, but also use cursive, type, and interact with technology, he said. 1.What drove Kenerson to set up the cursive club? A.Other educators’ appeal. B.Students’ interest in cursive. C.Students’ ignorance of cursive. D.The desire to stand out among workmates. 2.What is the current situation of cursive in the US? A.It lacks official support. B.It is regaining popularity. C.It remains unknown to the public. D.It is a required subject in all schools. 3.What does the underlined word "contentious" in paragraph 4 probably mean? A.Easily forgotten. B.Rapidly changed. C.Widely accepted. D.Deeply questioned. 4.What does Datchuk advise students to do? A.Focus only on printed handwriting in class. B.Give up handwriting and turn to technology. C.Spend more time practicing cursive every day. D.Master different ways of writing and learning. Passage 5 There are some differences between American English and British English. Some differences are quite interesting. When my friend Lily from London used the word “larder”, I didn’t know what it meant. Realizing I didn’t follow her, she used another word. I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food. The next word came up when we were planning a lunch date. She jotted down the date and time in her diary, while I marked my calendar. If she called me on the phone, she would ring me up. But if the line was busy, she would say the line was engaged. Most times, I can know what Lily means. Last week, she regretted sending her boys to watch an early morning tennis game without their fleeces. I thought that she meant without their jackets or something like that. Other times, we have to ask each other. She recently told me a funny tale about a pissed woman. I wondered what had made the lady angry. It turns out that pissed means drunk. Here is one more example. My British friend Jane was filling out a ticket at the grocery store recently. She asked the young man to help her if he had a rubber. When she noticed he didn’t follow her, she quickly asked for an eraser, which, in England, is often called a rubber. In order to communicate well with British people, we Americans should learn some words that the British use differently. And I think people who learn English as a second language should also realize that there are differences between American English and British English. 1.When Lily used the word “larder”, she was probably looking for a ________. A.greenhouse B.foodstuff C.cupboard D.cookbook 2.According to the passage, in British English ________. A.the word “pissed” means angry B.the word “jacket” is often used C.the word “engaged” means tired D.the word “rubber” means eraser 3.What does the underlined phrase “jotted down” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Wrote down B.Cared about C.Looked for D.Settled down 4.What is the passage mainly about? A.The British way of using words. B.Some new words the writer’s British friends taught her. C.The reasons why Americans can’t follow the British at times. D.Some words used differently in British English and American English. Passage 6 On holiday, many will find themselves in places where they do not speak the language. Once upon a time, they might have carried a phrase book. But now, many simple, free apps are good news for those travellers. With these apps’ conversation mode, people talk into a phone and a spoken translation is heard moments later. Maybe the best-known app is Google Translate, though small mistakes can happen due to its word-for-word translation. Surprisingly, the best tool may not be a translation app at all. Though not marketed for that, ChatGPT, a generative AI system, can write messages in different languages, producing natural output like a native speaker. As AI translation becomes an even more popular labour-saving tool, society may divide into two groups. There will be those who want to fully experience other cultures. This group will still take on language study, often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a new language with a different attitude: “Good for you, if that’s your thing, but a bit painful for my taste.” After all, most people do not move abroad or have an opportunity to experience a foreign culture deeply. On their holiday, they may just want a beer and spaghetti As a result, some experts are concerned that AI is leading to a decreasing interest in language learning. Writer Douglas Hofstadter has argued that something meaningful will disappear when people communicate through machines. He describes giving a disconnected, difficult speech in Chinese, which required a lot of work but offered a sense of achievement at the end. Who would boast (吹嘘) of taking a helicopter to the top of Mount Qomolangma? While AI translation seems practical, we must recognize the social nature of language. When trying to ask directions in broken Japanese or make a joke in awkward German, you are making direct contact with someone. The best relationships do not require a third party. 1.Which of the following best describes translation apps? A.Free but complex. B.Quick but imperfect. C.Creative but costly. D.Simple but time-consuming. 2.Why does the writer mention “beer and spaghetti” in paragraph 3? A.To present a conclusion. B.To suggest a possible situation. C.To offer a simple excuse. D.To provide another choice. 3.What can be inferred from Douglas Hofstadter’s opinion? A.Learning a foreign language proves less attractive. B.Reaching Mount Qomolangma by helicopter is fairly effortless. C.Using a foreign language independently is truly worthwhile. D.Making a speech in another language proves quite challenging. 4.What is the social nature of language according to the text? A.Connection between language users. B.Dependence on AI translation. C.Communication with the third party. D.Exchange of cultural information. Passage 7 When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). I suggested that they should stay at local bed and breakfasts, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories. “We didn’t stay at bed and breakfasts,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.” I thought this was odd. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is “vacaciones”. So they did not go to the house where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to the house where there was a sign saying “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. But that was not the case. In Spanish, the word “DIVERSION” means “fun”. In English, however, it usually means that you have to take the road because the usual roads are closed. English people have problems too when they are faced with foreign languages. Once in Paris, I happened to see a “librairie”. I thought it was a library and walked into it, asking to borrow some books. However, to my surprise, the “librarians” all stared at me in amazement! Later I found out that “librairie” in French means “bookstore”. 1.What kind of advice did the author’s Spanish friends want? A.Learning English. B.Going to England by car. C.Finding places to stay in England. D.Driving their car on English roads. 2.Why did the author suggest that his friends stay at bed and breakfasts? A.They would be able to practise their English. B.It would be convenient for them to have dinner. C.It would be much cheaper than staying in hotels. D.They would have no problem in finding accommodation there. 3.What does “NO VACANCIES” in Spanish mean? A.Holidays. B.No empty rooms. C.Rooms available. D.Not away on holiday. 4.What will happen if you see a road sign that says “DIVERSION” in English? A.You’ll fall into a hole. B.You’ll have a lot of fun. C.You’ll have to take the road. D.You’ll find the road is blocked. Passage 8 Playwright George Bernard Shaw once said that the US and the UK are “two countries divided by a common language”. Oscar Wilde, the famous playwright and poet, said, “We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, the language.” These quotes are reminders of the differences between the two countries’ varieties of English. When British settlers first arrived in America centuries ago, they brought their language with them. Over time, American English held onto some older pronunciations that later disappeared in Britain. For example, Americans clearly pronounced the “r” in words like “fire”, while many British speakers softened it or dropped it entirely. This difference gave each accent (口音) its unique sound, making it easy to tell where someone was from. New words also entered American English as settlers encountered unfamiliar landscapes and cultures. They borrowed terms from Native American languages for animals like “raccoons” and “moose”, as well as objects like “moccasins”. Later, settlers from Spain, Germany, and other countries brought words like “cookie” (from Dutch), “kindergarten” (from German), and “cilantro” (from Spanish). These additions made the American vocabulary richer and more diverse. Perhaps the most noticeable differences are in spelling. In the 1800s, British scholars (学者) created a dictionary to record English words as they were spoken in Britain. Meanwhile, American language expert Noah Webster wanted spelling to be simpler and more logical, which led to several changes. For example, Americans dropped the “u” in words like “color” (instead of the British “colour”) or changed “re” to “er” in words like “center” (instead of “centre”). These changes made American spelling easier and more standard. Though the two countries are separated by an ocean, both types of English continue to influence each other. British films, music, and literature are widely enjoyed in America, while American pop culture has also made its mark on British society. Their differences remain a reminder of how language adapts as people and cultures grow apart. What started as the same language now carries the unique history of two nations. 1.Why are George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde mentioned in paragraph 1? A.To suggest making a full change in English. B.To prove their different views about English. C.To explain the development of English in both countries. D.To show the differences in American and British English. 2.What happened after British settlers arrived in America? A.They gave up many terms in favor of new ones. B.They quickly formed a special American accent. C.They developed a new language with the help of locals. D.They kept old pronunciations and borrowed new words. 3.How did Noah Webster help develop American English? A.He added many new words to American English. B.He set a standard for American English spelling. C.He made American movies more popular in Britain. D.He recorded English words that were spoken in Britain. 4.What is the best title of the text? A.The simplifying process of American English. B.The Influence of American Culture on Britain. C.The historical development of American English. D.The importance of English in global communication. Passage 9 Recently, I saw several moms on the Internet criticizing (批评) parents who drive their kids to school. “It will spoil (宠坏) her,” one mom said. “She needs to be independent and catch the bus.” Many parents agree. After all, there are plenty of school buses filled with students in our small city. But unlike those other parents, I choose to drive my daughter, and have been doing so since she started primary school. I wake up early to drive her, and every afternoon, I wait in the car line to pick her up. I want to treasure this time with her while I can. These drives have become a special chance for us to connect. It’s a rare (罕见的) time when neither of us is doing anything else, and she is there just to listen to me. On the 10-minute drive to our local high school, I point out the first pink light of sunrise to my less-than-enthusiastic (不太感兴趣的) daughter. “Look at it! It’s so pretty,” I say. If I’m lucky, she’ll enjoy it with me, but most days she is a typical ninth grader — quiet, busy with her own thoughts, and giving one-word answers. To draw her out, I get creative with a new tradition. We soften Mondays and celebrate Fridays with an after-school stop at Starbucks for a mango drink or Dunkin’ for a strawberry treat. I ask questions in fun ways that let her share more. Sometimes I hear about a funny class moment, a problem in math, or a story from the gym. These drives are little moments of peace in her turbulent (躁动的) teenage life. We have our fights, and she might not enjoy these rides now as much as I do. But maybe one day she will remember them sweetly. Meanwhile, I’ll keep driving my daughter and make these days meaningful for both of us. 1.What makes the author different from other parents? A.The opinion on high schoolers using the Internet. B.The experience of teaching in primary school. C.The act of criticizing the traffic in her city. D.The habit of driving her kid to school. 2.What does the author’s practice result in? A.A messed-up work schedule. B.A closer relationship with her daughter. C.Her daughter’s greater enjoyment of learning. D.Disagreements between her and her friends. 3.Which of the following can best describe the author? A.Honest and quiet. B.Brave and curious. C.Caring and fun. D.Strict and serious. 4.What is the best title for the text? A.The Road Between Us B.The Morning at School C.A Fantastic Trip Through the City D.A Useful Suggestion for Parents of High Schoolers Passage 10 The people who influence our lives are our parents, grandparents, teachers and close friends, and they play an important role in our growth. They lead by example, teaching us how to deal with difficulties, how to stay strong in the face of adversity, how to be wise, and how to care for the people around us. My dad taught me how to have fun with technology. He runs a small workshop where teenagers learn to build simple robots. Today my dad continues to influence me in positive ways. He has faced a challenging health problem over the past year, but he has carried on with his life in much the same way as before his illness, going about his daily work a bit slower and needing to take more rest, but still living his life the way he wishes. My grandfather taught me the value of being trusted. He worked as a village doctor for forty years, and everyone in the village believed in him. My mother influenced my life in a different way. She was quiet, loving and full of strength. When she spoke, I listened, as she did not speak unless she had something to say. My best friend has encouraged me to be brave and independent, to think for myself, and not to look to others for permission. She has also taught me to adapt to the ever-changing reality of our high school life, and she has met each challenge with courage and dignity. I have learned much from the people who have had an influence on my life. For all that I have learned and for the role they played and continue to play in my life, I am forever thankful. 1.What can be learned about the author’s father? A.His life has completely changed. B.His workshop has closed down. C.He needs to rest most of the day. D.He has some health problems now. 2.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean? A.She liked talking about daily little things. B.She only spoke when necessary. C.She was too shy to express herself openly. D.She often kept silent for no reason. 3.Why does the author mention her best friend in the paragraph? A.To show her friend’s positive influence on her. B.To complain about the changes of school life. C.To prove friendship is the most valuable thing. D.To explain how to ask for friends’ permission. 4.What does the text mainly talk about? A.The influence of great people around us. B.The advantages of being strong. C.The significance of holiday greetings. D.The author’s family background. Passage 11 There comes a time for every family when the tables are turned and the parent has to answer to the child. Mine came recently when my wife and I stayed with our elder son in Los Angeles. A whole week under his roof! “Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel told me seriously on our first night. I grabbed extra paper towels to wipe the kitchen counter and was instructed to use the dishcloth. Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dogs in the morning — it will warm up when we get to the park. Why drink so much sparkling water (苏打水)? And do you have to take a shower before we drive to Topanga? At first I wondered how I’d raised an awkward (不好应付的) son. Then I remembered how often I threw the golden rule of parenting at him when he was young. “Someday, you’ll have a home of your own and can live however you want,” I’d say. “Until then, you’ll have to do as we ask.” And so I smilingly did as Nathaniel said, but with a touch of playfulness, like hiding a separate roll of paper towels in the storeroom, or moving one of his favorite photographs a few inches. There were advantages of following Nathaniel’s advice. He washed the dishes after dinner. He also set up our daily outings. And he willingly drove everywhere, sparing us the pain of Los Angeles’ traffic. One afternoon, we were walking along El Matador State Beach and hit an extended patch of rocks — clearly the end of the line. Nathaniel guided me across one large stone to the next, patiently telling me where to place my feet and hands as ocean waves came close. I was frightened, but after a couple hundred yards we made it to a fresh sandy beach. “You did it! I’m really proud,” he said. It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rose to fatherhood. 1.What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A.Nathaniel’s various rules. B.The father’s unhealthy lifestyles. C.Parent-child arguments. D.The father’s forgetfulness. 2.What can we infer about the father from Paragraph 3? A.He was angry at his son for ordering him around. B.He understood the role shift between parent and child. C.He refused to obey his son’s requirements completely. D.He felt ashamed of being controlled by his child. 3.According to the last paragraph, what should a father be? A.Strict and humorous. B.Selfless and open-minded. C.Adventurous and ambitious. D.Patient and encouraging. 4.What does the author’s experience show? A.When in Rome, do as the Romans do. B.Practice makes perfect. C.East or west, home is best. D.The student becomes the teacher. Passage 12 My eyes were filled with tears as I thought about his new journey in the morning. My baby was off to high school. I thought back to his first day of kindergarten (幼儿园). How he ran in excitement to the bus as my heart broke, and how his smiling face in the window caused my tears to flow. I thought about how hard it was to let go of his hand and let him fly on his own for the first time. But this time, I found it was even harder. Kindergarten is paper and glue sticks. High school is computer projects and technology you don’t understand. Kindergarten is Mother’s Day gifts made with handprints. High school is a funny card and a “Love you, Ma.” Kindergarten is afternoons at the park. High school is keys to the car. Kindergarten is excited talk about his day. High school is just “My day was fine, Ma.” Kindergarten is the beginning. High school is the beginning of the end. You know that your time with him at home will become less and less. The moments when your family will always feel complete at the end of the day are coming to an end. I’ve raised him to leave us. I’ve raised him to be independent (独立的), and I’m watching him pull away, one day at a time. As I watched him board the bus to high school, my eyes filled with tears again and my heart ached more deeply than it did on his first day of kindergarten. The bus pulled away, and my eyes met his. He gave a quick wave and mouthed, “Love you.” And then he made a silly face, and he wanted his mom to go back into the house now and set her mind at rest. I waved back and laughed. High school, here we come. 1.How did the author find sending her son to high school? A.Painful to let go. B.Free from worry. C.Hard to prepare for. D.Full of excitement. 2.What can we infer from the comparison between kindergarten and high school? A.High-school life is much easier. B.The son no longer loves his mother. C.The boy has grown more independent. D.The mother dislikes modern technology. 3.What feeling did the boy try to pass to his mom by making a silly face? A.Comfort and ease. B.Anger and impatience. C.Sadness and loneliness. D.Surprise and excitement. 4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.A Bus-ride to School B.Good-bye, My Little Boy C.The First Day of Kindergarten D.My Son’s Colourful High-school Life Passage 13 Ella and Mia had been friends since childhood. While Mia was slow to express herself, Ella was the outgoing and active one. Despite these differences, they quickly learned to understand and accept each other. From playing in the park to exchanging secrets late into the night, their friendship developed. As the years passed, their bond deepened, and their lives became connected in ways they could never have predicted. However, when they entered high school, life took a sudden turn. Ella’s family faced financial struggles, and she was forced to move to a different town. The change was hard for Ella, but even harder for Mia, who had always depended on Ella for support. Ella was struggling to get used to a new town, while Mia stayed behind, feeling quite lonely. But despite the physical distance(距离), they refused to let their friendship become weak. One night, Mia received a call from Ella. It was bad news. Ella’s father had fallen ill, and the situation was serious. Ella, who was usually strong and independent, broke down on the phone. She didn’t know what to do. Mia didn’t hesitate(犹豫) for a second. She packed her bags and traveled to Ella’s town at once. She did whatever she could and helped Ella’s family with whatever they needed. From making meals to comforting Ella, Mia proved that true friendship stands up to all challenges. Ella’s father’s health gradually improved, but what remained etched (铭记在心的) on Ella’s heart was the support Mia had shown during her darkest days. C.She wanted to make more friends. D.Her family ran into sudden trouble. 4.What lesson can we learn from the girls’ experience? A.A friend is a second self. B.A friend in need is a friend indeed. C.Distance makes friendship either sweeter or weaker. D.Good friends make you feel comfortable about being yourself. Passage 14 When you get to high school, it can seem intimidating to make completely new friends. However, it’s never too late to expand your circle of friends or make new ones. Start by meeting new people to be friends with. One great way to do that is to get involved in some after-class activities, like joining an academic club, a sports team, etc. because they provide a structured environment for you to interact in and can expose you to people with whom you already have something in common. Over time, you will form close friendships with some members. Make small talk to start engaging with people. However, sharing too much about yourself too quickly can be off-putting. In general, avoid talking about anything that’s really personal in the first few conversations, like details about your home life or medical history. A good way to make sure you don’t overshare is to spend more time talking about the other person. When you start getting closer to someone, sharing your secrets can help deepen your friendship. Just wait until they show you they can trust you or wait until they start sharing their secrets with you. If you get to know someone and it turns out they don’t want to be your friend, remember it’s not a reflection on who you are as a person. It just means they aren’t the right fit for you as a friend, so don’t beat yourself up. If you’re having a hard time making friends or if it’s taking longer than you’d like, don’t get down on yourself. People are attracted to someone who is confident and relaxed, so stay positive and remind yourself of all the great qualities you have. The best friendships are built up naturally over time, so don’t try to rush it or force it. If you keep putting yourself out there, eventually you’re going to meet people who like you for who you are. 1.What does the underlined word “intimidating” in paragraph 1 mean? A.Acceptable. B.Frightening. C.Reasonable. D.Disappointing. 2.How does joining in after-class activities help students according to the text? A.By allowing students to relax themselves. B.By getting students to enrich their school life. C.By making students master skills to become confident. D.By helping students meet people with similar interests. 3.When can you share your secrets with others in the author’s view? A.After you meet them several times. B.After they show friendliness to you. C.When you become close friends with them. D.When they share other people’s secrets with you. 4.The author advises you _________ if you fail to make friends with someone. A.stay confident and relaxed B.do a self-examination about it C.tell them all your good qualities D.try to become the person fit for them Passage 15 We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become virtual extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? In the past, the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to be conversant with technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days we teenagers are attracted to social networking sites because we can choose who we have around us; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (侵犯) when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand, we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand, if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before. A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it seriously if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to show their independence.” Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list. 1.What does the underlined word “conversant” in the second paragraph probably mean? A.Familiar. B.Careful. C.Patient. D.Busy. 2.What might be the reason for teens to refuse their parents’ friend request? A.They have nothing to hide. B.Their privacy cannot be ensured. C.They don’t want to teach their parents. D.They can’t choose friends around them. 3.Why is the survey mentioned in the passage? A.To warn parents. B.To blame parents. C.To challenge parents. D.To comfort parents. 4.What is most likely to be talked about next? A.How to bridge the generation gap. B.How to make friends on social networks. C.How to explain the refusal to parents. D.How to use the social networking sites wisely. Passage 1 Students in Camarillo high school are getting a real hands-on (实际操作的) education, thanks to an unusual farm program. 根据第一段“Students in Camarillo high school are getting a real hands-on (实际操作的) education, thanks to an unusual farm program. They aren’t just learning about farm animals. They’re raising them! This is the only high school in the country that raises its own animals on campus. (Camarillo高中的学生得益于特别的农场项目,获得实操教育。他们不只是学习农场动物相关知识,还饲养动物!这是国内唯一在校内饲养动物的高中。)”可知,这所学校的特别之处是允许学生在校饲养动物。 2.细节理解题。根据第二段“In this program, we join textbook knowledge with real-life practice. In the classroom, students learn about how to raise animals, and then they can step outside and directly use what they’re learning (在该项目中,我们把课本知识和现实实践结合起来。学生在课堂学习饲养动物的知识,之后可以走到户外直接运用所学内容)”可知,项目让学生有机会学以致用。 3.词句猜测题。根据第三段“But it’s a great comfort at the end of the busy day, sitting quietly with the animals away from hard work, especially when you just need some quiet time to unwind (但在忙碌一天结束后,远离繁重劳作,安静陪着动物会让人十分舒心,尤其是当你需要一段安静的时光来____的时候)”可知,at the end of the busy day、away from hard work、need some quiet time都指向“忙碌后需要放松、解压”,因此unwind跟“Relax (放松)”意义相近。 4. 根据最后一段“This Camarillo high school farm program isn’t just an extra class — it’s a life-shaping experience that turns textbook lessons into real doing, responsibility and joy. It’s the kind of learning more schools should look to, proving education can grow just as strongly on the farm as it does in a classroom. (Camarillo高中农场项目不仅仅是一门额外的课程,而是一次塑造人生的经历,将课本上的知识转化为实际操作、责任与乐趣。这种学习方式值得更多学校借鉴,证明教育在农场中同样能蓬勃发展,其影响力不亚于课堂学习。)”可知,农场式学习和课堂学习一样有价值。 Passage 2 The day I walked into Westbrook High, it seemed like every pair of eyes in the hallway somehow knew I was the new kid. 根据第一段“At lunch that first day, I sat at the corner table pretending (假装) to be very interested in my phone while secretly searching “…how to survive being the new kid.”(开学第一天午餐时,我坐在角落的桌子旁,假装对手机很感兴趣,却偷偷搜索“……作为新生该如何熬过这段日子”) 可知,作者第一天午饭时上网寻找建议。 2.细节理解题。根据第三段“But something small changed when a guy named Luca asked if I wanted to join his group during science lab. It was not a dramatic movie moment, just a simple “Hey, you can sit here if you want.” That one sentence made the whole day easier.(但在科学实验课上,一个叫卢卡的男生问我要不要加入他的小组,小小的改变就此发生。这并不是电影里那种激动人心的时刻,只是一句简单的“嘿,如果你想,你可以坐这里。”就这一句话让一整天轻松了许多)”可知,一位同学的邀请成为第一周的转折点。 3.细节理解题。根据第四段“One trick that helped me adjust (适应) to a new school was setting small goals. Instead of trying to make five best friends right away, I focused on simple things.(帮我适应新学校的一个办法就是设立小目标。我没有想着立刻交到五个挚友,而是专注于简单的小事)”可知,作者为自己设定容易实现的目标来适应新校园生活。 4.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Feeling uncomfortable does not last forever. If you are the new kid right now, hang in there. The hallway that feels strange today might become the place where your next chapter (篇章) begins.(不适感不会永远持续。如果你现在正是新生,坚持住。今天还觉得陌生的走廊,或许会成为你人生新篇章开启的地方)”可知,作者建议给自己一点时间去融入新环境。 Passage 3 School Life Clubs There are more than 60 clubs at Northwood High. 【答案】1.C 2.B 3.D 4.D 【导语】本文主要介绍美国草书教学重新兴起的校园现象,讲述教师Kenerson创办草书社团的缘由,同时介绍专家对于草书教学的价值争议以及相关教育学者给出的折中教育观点。 1.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Kenerson started the middle school club when students couldn’t read her writing on the board. They just stared at her blankly, she said.(Kenerson说,当学生们看不懂她写在黑板上的字时,她创办了这个中学俱乐部。他们只是茫然地盯着她。)”可知,促使Kenerson创办草书俱乐部的原因是学生们对草书一无所知。 2.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Kenerson’s after-school club is a local example of a nationwide trend — cursive handwriting is back in many classrooms across the country.(Kenerson的课后社团是全国趋势的一个缩影——草书书写正在全国众多课堂中再度回归。)”可知,美国草书如今正在重新流行、恢复热度。 3.词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“Teachers and legislators credit the return to nostalgia (怀旧) and some evidence of educational benefits. But surprisingly, the curves and swoops are contentious among experts, and some argue that cursive does not add any real value for students, especially in the age of AI.(教师和立法者将草书的回归归因于怀旧情结以及其具备一定教育价值,但令人意外的是,草书在专家群体中是contentious的,部分专家认为在人工智能时代,草书无法为学生带来实际价值。)”可知,对于草书的价值,专家们看法不一、存在诸多质疑,contentious意为“备受争议、遭到深度质疑”,与Deeply questioned意思相近。 4.细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“They need to not only be able to handwrite using print, but also use cursive, type, and interact with technology, he said.(他表示,学生不仅需要会印刷体手写,还需要掌握草书、打字以及运用各类科技工具。)”可知,Datchuk建议学生掌握多种书写与学习方式,实现多元学习模式。 Passage 5 There are some differences between American English and British English. 【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.D 【导语】文章通过作者与英国朋友的日常交流,列举了“larder”“rubber”等词汇,生动展示了英美英语在词汇使用上的差异,并提醒英语学习者注意这些不同,以便更好地进行跨文化沟通。 1.细节理解题。根据文章第二段中的“When my friend Lily from London used the word “larder”, I didn’t know what it meant. Realizing I didn’t follow her, she used another word. I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food. (当伦敦的朋友Lily用“larder”这个词时,我并不知道它的意思。意识到我没有理解她,她换了一个词。我终于明白,她其实是想找个地方来存放一些食物。)”可知,Lily想找的是存放食物的柜子,cupboard意为“橱柜”,符合语境。 2.细节理解题。根据文章第四段中的“She asked the young man to help her if he had a rubber. When she noticed he didn’t follow her, she quickly asked for an eraser, which, in England, is often called a rubber. (她问那个年轻男子有没有橡皮擦,能不能帮帮她。当她注意到对方没听懂时,她赶紧改口说要一块橡皮擦,因为在英国,橡皮擦通常被称为rubber。)”可知,在英式英语中,“rubber”的意思是“eraser(橡皮擦)”,D选项符合题意。 3.词句猜测题。根据文章第二段中的“She jotted down the date and time in her diary, while I marked my calendar.(她在日记本上____日期和时间,而我在日历上做标记。)”可知,在日记本上记录日期和时间,jotted down应与“写下”同义,wrote down符合语境,A选项“Wrote down(写下)”符合题意。 4.主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“There are some differences between American English and British English. Some differences are quite interesting.(美式英语和英式英语之间存在一些差异。有些差异非常有趣。)”以及全文通过多个具体例子(如larder、diary、rubber、pissed等)展示了英美两国在词汇使用上的不同,可知文章主要讲述的是英美英语中一些词汇的不同用法,D选项“Some words used differently in British English and American English.(一些在英式英语和美式英语中用法不同的词语。)”符合题意。 Passage 6 On holiday, many will find themselves in places where they do not speak the language. On their holiday, they may just want a beer and spaghetti (意大利面). As a result, some experts are concerned that AI is leading to a decreasing interest in language learning. 【答案】1.B 2.B 3.C 4.A 【导语】本文主要介绍AI翻译工具的优势,探讨其对语言学习的影响,强调语言承载人与人之间直接交流的社会属性。 1.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“With these apps’ conversation mode, people talk into a phone and a spoken translation is heard moments later. Maybe the best-known app is Google Translate, though small mistakes can happen due to its word-for-word translation.(借助这些应用的对话模式,人们对着手机说话,片刻之后就能听到语音翻译。也许最知名的应用是谷歌翻译,但由于逐字翻译,会出现一些小错误。)”可知,翻译软件翻译速度快,但存在缺陷,并不完美。 2.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“After all, most people do not move abroad or have an opportunity to experience a foreign culture deeply. On their holiday, they may just want a beer and spaghetti (意大利面).(毕竟,大多数人不会移居国外,也没有机会深入体验外国文化。度假时,他们可能只是想要一杯啤酒和一份意大利面。)”可知,作者举例描绘一类游客的需求,展示一种可能出现的情形,他们只需要简单交流,不需要学习外语。 3.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“He describes giving a disconnected, difficult speech in Chinese, which required a lot of work but offered a sense of achievement at the end. Who would boast (吹嘘) of taking a helicopter to the top of Mount Qomolangma?(他讲述自己用中文发表一段不连贯且艰难的演讲,这需要付出大量努力,但最终带来成就感。谁会吹嘘乘坐直升机登上珠穆朗玛峰呢?)”可知,Douglas Hofstadter认为独立使用外语交流的过程虽辛苦,但收获的价值是AI翻译无法替代的,这样的经历才真正值得。 4.细节理解题。通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“While AI translation seems practical, we must recognize the social nature of language. When trying to ask directions in broken Japanese or make a joke in awkward German, you are making direct contact with someone. The best relationships do not require a third party.(虽然人工智能翻译看似实用,但我们必须认识到语言具有社会性。当你用蹩脚的日语问路,或是用生硬的德语开玩笑时,你正在和他人进行直接交流。最好的关系不需要第三方。)”可知,语言的社会属性体现在语言使用者之间建立直接的联系。 Passage 7 When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. 【答案】1.C 2.A 3.D 4.C 【导语】文章主要讲述作者的西班牙朋友去英国,因单词跨语言词义混淆闹出一系列有趣误会。 1.细节理解题。根据第一段中“Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). (出发前,他们向我询问如何找到住所的建议。)”可知,作者的西班牙朋友想要寻找在英国住宿地方的建议。 2.细节理解题。根据第一段中“I suggested that they should stay at local bed and breakfasts, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. (我建议他们住在当地的住宿加早餐旅馆,因为这种住宿给外国游客一个和这家人说英语的好机会。)”可知,作者推荐民宿是因为朋友们可以练习英语。 3.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Then my friends went to the house where there was a sign saying “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. (朋友们走进标有“NO VACANCIES”的房子,因为他们认为这代表房主没有外出度假。)”可知,朋友们按西班牙语的思维把“NO VACANCIES”理解为主人没有外出度假。 4.细节理解题。根据第四段中“In English, however, it usually means that you have to take the road because the usual roads are closed. (然而在英语中,它通常意味着你必须走这条路,因为常规道路被关闭了。)”可知,看到该标志意味着必须走这条路。 Passage 8 Playwright George Bernard Shaw once said that the US and the UK are “two countries divided by a common language”. 【答案】1.D 2.D 3.B 4.C 【导语】文章主要介绍了美式英语与英式英语在发音、词汇、拼写等方面的差异,以及两者相互影响的情况。 1.推理判断题。根据第一段“Playwright George Bernard Shaw once said that the US and the UK are “two countries divided by a common language”. Oscar Wilde, the famous playwright and poet, said, “We have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, the language.” These quotes are reminders of the differences between the two countries’ varieties of English.(剧作家George Bernard Shaw曾说,美国和英国是“被同一种语言分隔的两个国家”。著名剧作家兼诗人Oscar Wilde则表示:“如今,我们和美国确实在所有方面都有共同之处,当然,除了语言。”这些引述提醒人们注意两国英语的不同之处)”可知,第一段提到George Bernard Shaw和Oscar Wilde是为了展示美式英语和英式英语的差异。 2.细节理解题。根据第二段“Over time, American English held onto some older pronunciations that later disappeared in Britain.(随着时间的推移,美式英语保留了一些后来在英国消失的旧发音)”以及第三段“New words also entered American English as settlers encountered unfamiliar landscapes and cultures.(随着定居者遇到不熟悉的风景和文化,新词也进入了美式英语)”可知,英国定居者到达美国后,保留了旧的发音并借用了新词。 3.细节理解题。根据第四段“In the 1800s, British scholars (学者) created a dictionary to record English words as they were spoken in Britain. Meanwhile, American language expert Noah Webster wanted spelling to be simpler and more logical, which led to several changes.(19世纪,英国学者编纂了一部词典,记录英国人日常使用的英语词汇。与此同时,美国语言学家Noah Webster希望拼写更简单、更合乎逻辑,这促使了多项修改)”以及后文举例可知,Noah Webster为美式英语拼写设定了标准。 4.主旨大意题。文章主要围绕美式英语和英式英语的差异展开,介绍了它们在发音、词汇、拼写等方面的不同,以及两者相互影响的情况,整体是在讲述美式英语的历史发展。所以C选项“美式英语的历史发展”为最佳标题。 Passage 9 Recently, I saw several moms on the Internet criticizing (批评) parents who drive their kids to school. A.The Road Between Us B.The Morning at School C.A Fantastic Trip Through the City D.A Useful Suggestion for Parents of High Schoolers 【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.A 【导语】文章讲述了作者坚持亲自开车接送女儿上下学,以此作为母女俩专属的沟通时间。尽管女儿正值青春期,作者仍用心创造温馨的小传统,努力拉近彼此距离,让这段接送时光成为她们情感连接的纽带。 1.细节理解题。根据文章第一段“Recently, I saw several moms on the Internet criticizing (批评) parents who drive their kids to school. (最近,我在网上看到几位妈妈批评开车送孩子上学的父母。)”以及第二段“But unlike those other parents, I choose to drive my daughter, and have been doing so since she started primary school. (但与其他父母不同,我选择开车送女儿上学,从她上小学开始就一直这样。)”可知,作者与其他父母的不同之处在于她坚持开车接送孩子的习惯。 2.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“These drives have become a special chance for us to connect. (这些车程成了我们建立联系的特别机会。)”以及第五段“I ask questions in fun ways that let her share more. (我用有趣的方式提问,让她多分享一些。)”可知,作者的做法促进了母女间的沟通,结果是与女儿的关系更亲密。 3.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“I want to treasure this time with her while I can. (我想趁现在还能这样,好好珍惜和她共度的时光。)”以及第五段“To draw her out, I get creative with a new tradition. (为了引导她开口,我创造了一个新传统)”以及“I ask questions in fun ways that let her share more. Sometimes I hear about a funny class moment, a problem in math, or a story from the gym. These drives are little moments of peace in her turbulent (躁动的) teenage life.(我用有趣的方式提问,让她多分享一些。 Passage 10 The people who influence our lives are our parents, grandparents, teachers and close friends, and they play an important role in our growth. 【答案】1.D 2.B 3.A 4.A 【导语】文章主要讲述了作者的父亲、祖父、母亲和好友等人如何以各自的方式对她产生积极影响,她对此深表感激。 1.细节理解题。根据第二段中“He has faced a challenging health problem over the past year, but he has carried on with his life in much the same way as before his illness, going about his daily work a bit slower and needing to take more rest, but still living his life the way he wishes.(在过去的一年里,他面临着一个具有挑战性的健康问题,但他继续以与病前大致相同的方式生活,只是日常工作稍慢一些,需要多休息,但仍然按照自己希望的方式生活)”可知,作者的父亲现在有一些健康问题。 2.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“She was quiet, loving and full of strength. When she spoke, I listened, as she did not speak unless she had something to say.(她安静、充满爱心且坚强。当她说话时,我会倾听,因为她除非有话要说,否则不会说话)”可知,母亲说话不多,只在有必要时才开口。画线句“she did not speak unless she had something to say”意为“她只有在有话要说时才说话”,即她只在必要时说话。 3.推理判断题。根据第四段中“My best friend has encouraged me to be brave and independent, to think for myself, and not to look to others for permission. She has also taught me to adapt to the ever-changing reality of our high school life, and she has met each challenge with courage and dignity.(我最好的朋友鼓励我要勇敢、独立,要独立思考,不要指望别人允许。她还教会我适应高中生活不断变化的事实,她以勇气和尊严迎接每一个挑战)”可知,作者提到她最好的朋友是为了展示朋友对她产生的积极影响。 4.主旨大意题。根据第一段中“The people who influence our lives are our parents, grandparents, teachers and close friends, and they play an important role in our growth.(影响我们生活的人是我们的父母、祖父母、老师和亲密的朋友,他们在我们的成长中扮演着重要角色)”以及全文内容可知,文章通过具体事例讲述了身边普通人(家人、朋友)对作者产生的积极影响,因此文章主要谈论的是身边对我们有重要影响的人。 Passage 11 There comes a time for every family when the tables are turned and the parent has to answer to the child. 【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.D 【导语】文章讲述了夫妇去洛杉矶儿子家住,儿子定下各种规矩。父亲体会到亲子角色互换。海滩上儿子耐心保护鼓励父亲,让父亲感悟到学生亦可成为老师。 1.主旨大意题。根据第二段““Dad, don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth,” Nathaniel told me seriously on our first night. I grabbed extra paper towels to wipe the kitchen counter and was instructed to use the dishcloth. Don’t wear a neck warmer when walking the dogs in the morning — it will warm up when we get to the park. Why drink so much sparkling water (苏打水)? And do you have to take a shower before we drive to Topanga?(“爸爸,刷牙的时候别让水一直流着。” 第一天晚上,纳撒尼尔认真地对我说。我拿了额外的纸巾擦拭厨房台面,却被要求改用抹布。早上遛狗别戴围脖 —— 到公园的时候天就暖和了。为什么要喝这么多苏打水?还有,我们开车去托潘加之前,你非得洗澡不可吗?)”可知,第二段主要写纳撒尼尔定下的各种规矩。 2.推理判断题。根据第三段“Then I remembered how often I threw the golden rule of parenting at him when he was young. “Someday, you’ll have a home of your own and can live however you want,” I’d say. “Until then, you’ll have to do as we ask.” And so I smilingly did as Nathaniel said, but with a touch of playfulness, like hiding a separate roll of paper towels in the storeroom, or moving one of his favorite photographs a few inches.(我想起在他小时候,我常常拿为人父母的金科玉律来要求他。我那时总说:“总有一天,你会拥有属于自己的家,可以按自己喜欢的方式生活。但在那之前,你必须照我们说的做。”于是我笑着听从纳撒尼尔的安排,但又带着一点小调皮,比如在储藏室藏一卷单独的纸巾,或是把他一张心爱的照片挪开几英寸)”可知,父亲理解亲子之间角色发生了转变。 3.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Nathaniel guided me across one large stone to the next, patiently telling me where to place my feet and hands as ocean waves came close. I was frightened, but after a couple hundred yards we made it to a fresh sandy beach. “You did it! I’m really proud,” he said. It was then that I knew for sure that the son also rose to fatherhood.(纳撒尼尔扶着我,从一块大石头跨到另一块。海浪涌来的时候,他耐心告诉我手脚该放在哪里。我心里很害怕,但走了几百码之后,我们终于抵达一片崭新的沙滩。“你做到了!我真为你骄傲。”他说道。就在那一刻,我真切意识到,儿子也成长到了如同父亲一般可靠的模样)”可知,一位父亲应当有耐心并善于鼓励他人。 4.推理判断题。根据第一段“There comes a time for every family when the tables are turned and the parent has to answer to the child.(每个家庭都会迎来这样一个时刻:角色互换,父母反倒要听从孩子的安排)”以及通读全文,从前父亲管教儿子,如今儿子反过来照顾并指引父亲,体现学生也可以成为老师,角色互换,即“青出于蓝,学生成老师”。 Passage 12 My eyes were filled with tears as I thought about his new journey in the morning. A.A Bus-ride to School B.Good-bye, My Little Boy C.The First Day of Kindergarten D.My Son’s Colourful High-school Life 【答案】1.A 2.C 3.A 4.B 【导语】文章主要讲述了作者在儿子升入高中之际,回忆其幼儿园时光,表达对孩子成长独立的不舍与欣慰。 1.细节理解题。根据第二段中“I thought about how hard it was to let go of his hand and let him fly on his own for the first time. But this time, I found it was even harder.(我想到第一次放开他的手让他独自飞翔有多难。但这一次,我发现更难。)”可知,作者觉得送儿子上高中更难放手,令人痛苦。 2.推理判断题。根据第三段“Kindergarten is paper and glue sticks. High school is computer projects and technology you don’t understand. Kindergarten is Mother’s Day gifts made with handprints. High school is a funny card and a “Love you, Ma.” Kindergarten is afternoons at the park. High school is keys to the car. Kindergarten is excited talk about his day. High school is just “My day was fine, Ma.”(幼儿园是纸和胶棒。高中是电脑项目和你不懂的技术。幼儿园是用手印做的母亲节礼物。高中是一张搞笑的卡片和一句“爱你,妈。”幼儿园是在公园度过的下午。高中是车钥匙。幼儿园是兴奋地谈论他的一天。高中只是“我今天挺好的,妈。”)”以及第四段中“I’ve raised him to be independent (独立的), and I’m watching him pull away, one day at a time.(我养育他是为了让他独立,而我看着他一天天疏远。)”可推知,从幼儿园和高中的比较中可知,儿子变得更加独立了。 3.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The bus pulled away, and my eyes met his. He gave a quick wave and mouthed, “Love you.” And then he made a silly face, and he wanted his mom to go back into the house now and set her mind at rest. I waved back and laughed. High school, here we come.(公交车驶离,我和他的目光相遇。他迅速挥了挥手,用口型说:“爱你。”然后他做了个鬼脸,他想让妈妈现在回到屋里,好让她放心。我挥手回应,笑了。高中,我们来了。)”可知,儿子做鬼脸是为了安慰妈妈,让她安心。 4.主旨大意题。根据第二段中“I thought back to his first day of kindergarten (幼儿园). How he ran in excitement to the bus as my heart broke, and how his smiling face in the window caused my tears to flow.(我回想起他上幼儿园的第一天。他兴奋地跑向公交车,而我的心都碎了;他在车窗里的笑脸让我泪流满面。)”以及最后一段中“As I watched him board the bus to high school, my eyes filled with tears again and my heart ached more deeply than it did on his first day of kindergarten.(当我看着他登上开往高中的公交车时,我的眼睛再次充满泪水,我的心比上幼儿园第一天更痛。)”可知,全文以儿子升入高中为契机,母亲回忆儿时,感慨孩子已经长大、慢慢独立远去,B项“Good-bye, My Little Boy(再见了,我的小男孩)”最贴合这一核心情感,适合作文章标题。 Passage 13 Ella and Mia had been friends since childhood. From making meals to comforting Ella, Mia proved that true friendship stands up to all challenges.(她尽其所能,帮助埃拉一家满足各类需求。从做饭到安慰埃拉,米娅证明真正的友谊可以经受所有考验。)”可知,在埃拉遭遇困境时,米娅毫不犹豫赶来提供帮助,这正好印证谚语“A friend in need is a friend indeed (患难见真情)”。 Passage 14 When you get to high school, it can seem intimidating to make completely new friends. A.stay confident and relaxed B.do a self-examination about it C.tell them all your good qualities D.try to become the person fit for them 【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 4.A 【导语】文章主要介绍了高中生如何结交新朋友。 1. 根据下文“However, it’s never too late to expand your circle of friends or make new ones.(不过,拓展你的朋友圈或者结识新朋友,永远都不算晚。)” 根据第二段“One great way to do that is to get involved in some after-class activities, like joining an academic club, a sports team, etc. because they provide a structured environment for you to interact in and can expose you to people with whom you already have something in common.(做到这一点的一个好办法就是参加一些课外活动,比如加入学术社团、运动队等等。因为这些活动能提供一个有组织的交流环境,让你有机会接触到和你拥有共同点的人。)”可知,根据文章,参加课外活动能帮助学生结识兴趣相近的人。 3.细节理解题。根据第三段“When you start getting closer to someone, sharing your secrets can help deepen your friendship.(当你开始和某人慢慢变得亲近时,分享自己的秘密有助于加深你们的友谊。)” 根据第四段“If you’re having a hard time making friends or if it’s taking longer than you’d like, don’t get down on yourself. People are attracted to someone who is confident and relaxed, so stay positive and remind yourself of all the great qualities you have.(如果你很难交到朋友,或是交友过程比你预想的要漫长,不要苛责自己。人们会被自信从容的人所吸引,所以要保持积极,时刻记住你自身拥有的所有闪光点。)”可知,如果没能和某人交到朋友,作者建议你保持自信、心态放松。 Passage 15 We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or lunch queue? 根据第二段“In the past, the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to be conversant with technology. (过去,代沟还包括技术差距,孩子们掌握着最新的科技,而父母则被抛在后面,他们满足于继续过着以往的生活,因为并不需要conversant 技术。)”可知,父母满足于以往的生活,认为自己不需要熟悉、了解科技。所以conversant意为“熟悉的”,与familiar意思相近。 2.细节理解题。根据第三段“there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don't get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. (我们对隐私有一定的控制权,这是现实生活中得不到的。有时当我们必须接受父母或家庭成员的“好友”请求时,我们会觉得隐私被侵犯了。)”可知,青少年拒绝父母好友请求的原因是他们的隐私无法得到保障。 3.推理判断题。根据第五段“A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn't take it seriously if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent's friend request, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to show their independence.” (一项最近的调查建议,如果孩子忽略了父母的请求,父母不应该太当回事:“当青少年忽略父母的好友请求时,并不一定意味着他们在隐瞒什么,而可能意味着这是他们生活中想要展示独立性的一部分。”)”可知,提到这项调查是为了安慰父母,让父母不要过度担心。 4.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list. (也许当你选择不把父母添加到好友列表时,与父母交谈并给出解释会有助于减轻打击。)”可知,文章接下来最可能谈论的是如何向父母解释拒绝添加好友的原因。 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
