These towns left a mark on America’s growth and deserve recognition long after their peak years.  Brattleboro, Vermont Brattleboro was a key stop for early American writers and reformers. Its riverside location powered factories that supported local industry and trade, while the town hosted meetings that influenced social movements across New England. Brattleboro’s newspapers and publications helped spread progressive ideas during the 19th century, making it a centre of cultural and political thought despite its modest size.  Staunton, Virginia Staunton became an important cultural and educational centre in the 19th century, home to influential colleges and theaters that nurtured political and literary talent. Its location along the Shenandoah Valley Turnpike made it a key stop for trade and troop movements during the Civil War.  Salem, Massachusetts Salem was a major port that influenced early American and global commerce. Its shipyards, merchants, and trading networks connected the US to Asia and Europe, shaping economic patterns that lasted for decades. Salem residents contributed to political thought and social reform, with ideas spreading along New England’s coast.  Harpers Ferry, West Virginia Harpers Ferry played a strategic role during the Civil War and was the site of John Brown’s famous sudden attack in 1859, which intensified national debates over slavery. Its location at the meeting point of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers made it a key transportation and manufacturing centre. The town produced weapons that influenced military outcomes.  1. What helped promote advanced ideas in Brattleboro during the 19th century? A. Its riverside factories.    B. Its newspapers and publications.  C. Its colleges and theaters.    D. Its meetings on social movements.  2. Which town linked early America with overseas markets by trade? A. Brattleboro, Vermont.    B. Staunton, Virginia.  C. Salem, Massachusetts.    D. Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.  3. What was the significance of the event in Harpers Ferry in 1859? A. It helped the town become a stop for trade.   B. It encouraged the town to produce weapons.  C. It contributed to the discussions about slavery.   D. It established the town as a centre for social reform. B 2. C 3. 根据文章Brattleboro, Vermont部分中的“ Brattleboro’s newspapers and publications helped spread progressive ideas during the 19th century, making it a centre of cultural and political thought despite its modest size.(Brattleboro的报纸和出版物在 19 世纪帮助传播进步思想,这使得它成为一个文化与政治思想中心,尽管它的规模不大。)” 根据文章Salem, Massachusetts部分中的“Its shipyards, merchants, and trading networks connected the US to Asia and Europe, shaping economic patterns that lasted for decades.(这它的造船厂、商人们以及贸易网络把美国和亚洲、欧洲连接起来,形成了持续数十年的经济模式。)” 根据文章Harpers Ferry, West Virginia部分中的“Harpers Ferry played a strategic role during the Civil War and was the site of John Brown’s famous sudden attack in 1859, which intensified national debates over slavery.(Harpers Ferry在南北战争期间发挥着战略作用,并且是1859年约翰·布朗那次著名突袭的地点,这件事加剧了全国关于奴隶制的辩论。)” B What do rubber and an ancient ball game have in common? A lot! Over 3,000 years ago, Mayans (玛雅人) collected the white milky liquid from the rubber tree — what we know today as natural rubber. They used it to make not only weatherproof clothing and drinking cups, but also bouncy balls. Who would have thought that the ancestor of our car tires was flying through the air in ancient Mexico? In the 18th century, explorers from Europe brought the samples home. But the material smelt strange, became sticky in the heat and broke up in the cold — not a big seller. It was only when Edward Nairne, a London instrument maker, accidentally discovered in 1770 that it could be used to remove pencil marks. He began selling small pieces of rubber as erasers. In the same year, chemist Joseph Priestley described the ability to “rub” writing and gave the material its name: rubber. Sometimes it takes a little chaos for great discoveries to be made. In 1839, businessman and amateur researcher Charles Goodyear accidentally dropped a mixture of rubber and sulphur (硫黄) onto a hot stove. Instead of melting, the mixture became springy and strong. Suddenly, natural rubber was suitable for everyday use: weather-resistant, springy and durable. And yes, without Goodyear, not a single car would be on the road today — even though he himself never saw a car. The man died in 1860 — a full 25 years before the automobile was invented. In 1888, a dentist entered the scene: John Boyd Dunlop monkeyed with an air-filled tire for his son’s bicycle. The effect? Less noisy, more riding comfort-a revolution on wheels. The automobile industry soon adopted the principle. The first car with air-filled tires drove through Clermont-Ferrand, France, in 1895, home of a future famous tire manufacturer. 4. Why are Mayans mentioned in paragraph 1? A. To state the early uses of rubber. B. To create a sense of mystery. C. To demonstrate the origins of cars. D. To show the wisdom of ancients. 5. How did the rubber get its name? A. From the trees that produce it. B. From its use in erasing pencil marks. C. From the Mayans in Mexico. D. From its weatherproof function. 6. Whose discovery broadened the uses of rubber? A. Edward Nairne. B. Joseph Priestley. C. Charles Goodyear. D. John Boyd Dunlop. 7. Which can be the best title for the text? A. Inventors of Car Tires B. The Origin of Rubber C. A Brief History of Rubber D. Amateurs Make the History 【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第一段中“Over 3,000 years ago, Mayans (玛雅人) collected the white milky liquid from the rubber tree — what we know today as natural rubber. They used it to make not only weatherproof clothing and drinking cups, but also bouncy balls.(3000多年前,玛雅人从橡胶树上收集白色乳状液体——我们今天所知的天然橡胶。他们不仅用它制作防风雨的衣服和饮水杯,还制作有弹性的球。)”可知,作者在第一段提到玛雅人是为了说明橡胶的早期用途。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“It was only when Edward Nairne, a London instrument maker, accidentally discovered in 1770 that it could be used to remove pencil marks. He began selling small pieces of rubber as erasers. In the same year, chemist Joseph Priestley described the ability to ‌“rub” writing and gave the material its name: rubber.(直到1770年,伦敦仪器制造商爱德华·奈恩偶然发现它可以用来擦除铅笔痕迹。他开始出售小块橡胶作为橡皮擦。同年,化学家约瑟夫·普里斯特利描述了它“擦除”字迹的能力,并给这种材料命名为“rubber”。)”可知,橡胶的名字来源于它擦除铅笔痕迹的用途。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“In 1839, businessman and amateur researcher Charles Goodyear accidentally dropped a mixture of rubber and sulphur (硫黄) onto a hot stove. Instead of melting, the mixture became springy and strong. Suddenly, natural rubber was suitable for everyday use: weather-resistant, springy and durable.(1839年,商人兼业余研究者查尔斯·固特异不小心将橡胶和硫黄的混合物滴到热炉子上。混合物没有融化,反而变得有弹性且坚固。突然间,天然橡胶适合日常使用了:耐候、有弹性且耐用。)”可知,查尔斯·固特异的发现拓宽了橡胶的用途。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“Over 3,000 years ago, Mayans (玛雅人) collected the white milky liquid from the rubber tree-what we know today as natural rubber.(3000多年前,玛雅人从橡胶树上收集白色乳状液体——我们今天所知的天然橡胶。)”、第二段中“It was only when Edward Nairne, a London instrument maker, accidentally discovered in 1770 that it could be used to remove pencil marks.(直到1770年,伦敦仪器制造商爱德华·奈恩偶然发现它可以用来擦除铅笔痕迹。)”、第三段中“In 1839, businessman and amateur researcher Charles Goodyear accidentally dropped a mixture of rubber and sulphur (硫黄) onto a hot stove.(1839年,商人兼业余研究者查尔斯·固特异不小心将橡胶和硫黄的混合物滴到热炉子上。)”以及第四段中“In 1888, a dentist entered the scene: John Boyd Dunlop monkeyed with an air-filled tire for his son’s bicycle.(1888年,一位牙医登场:约翰·博伊德·邓禄普为他儿子的自行车摆弄了一个充气轮胎。)” C Golden eagles are incredible, magnificent birds. Serving as a keystone species, they rule the skies, affecting entire ecosystems. This means that they are a top predator (捕食者) and their presence in an ecosystem helps maintain the balance by regulating prey populations and influencing animal behavior. Once these birds were a common sight in England, and Shakespeare mentioned them at least 40 times in his works. However, during the Victorian era, golden eagles were nearly extinct, and they haven’t been seen over England’s skies in over 150 years. Now, a new program is hoping to change that. Following a study done by Forestry England, eight potential recovery zones have been identified for the birds, mostly in northern England. The next step is to figure out the practicalities of releasing the eagles, which may happen as early as 2027. Though it will take some time, even generations, before the golden eagle population returns to its former numbers, conservationists in England have taken heart from similar efforts in the north, in Scotland. There the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project has successfully raised the number of golden eagles through a careful mix of translocation and habitat management. However, concerns remain. Farmers, especially sheep farmers, fear that the eagles, as predators, could have a negative effect on their valuable lamb stock. Yet Tom Orde-Powlette, a landowner at Bolton Hall Estate, told news media, “It might not all be negative though — there is evidence that golden eagles might dislodge many other more generalist predators such as red kites, so they could have a positive impact.” Reintroducing an animal into its former ecosystem is not as simple as one may think. There are many factors to take into account, from climate changes to technological changes, and yes, local industries. However, worldwide reintroduction of various species, especially keystone species, has shown that their effect on the ecosystem can truly revitalize entire regions. Here’s hoping that over the next few years golden eagles will be seen in all their glory over the skies of England. 8. What key role do golden eagles play? A. Changing local animal habits.  B. Controlling prey populations. C. Balancing local ecosystems.  D. Decorating the skies. 9. What can we infer about English conservationists from paragraph 4? A. They feel proud of their own work. B. They expect immediate eagle recovery. C. They plan to copy the Scottish methods. D. They are encouraged by the Scotland project. 10. What does the underlined word “dislodge” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Drive away.  B. Watch over.  C. Cooperate with.  D. Hunt for. 11. What is the author’s attitude to the new project? A. Supportive and hopeful.  B. Doubtful and opposed. C. Cautious but expectant.  D. Pessimistic but open-minded. C 9. D 10. A 11. 根据第一段“This means that they are a top predator (捕食者) and their presence in an ecosystem helps maintain the balance by regulating prey populations and influencing animal behavior.(这意味着它们是顶级捕食者,它们在生态系统中的存在,通过调控猎物种群数量、影响动物行为来帮助维持生态平衡)”可知,金雕起到平衡当地生态系统的关键作用。 根据第四段“Though it will take some time, even generations, before the golden eagle population returns to its former numbers, conservationists in England have taken heart from similar efforts in the north, in Scotland.(虽然金雕种群恢复到原有数量需要一段时间,甚至好几代人的时间,但英格兰的环保人士从位于北部的苏格兰的类似举措中受到鼓舞)”可知,英格兰环保人士被苏格兰项目鼓舞。 根据第五段“Yet Tom Orde-Powlette, a landowner at Bolton Hall Estate, told news media, “It might not all be negative though — there is evidence that golden eagles might dislodge many other more generalist predators such as red kites, so they could have a positive impact.”(不过博尔顿庄园的土地所有者汤姆·奥尔德-鲍莱特告诉新闻媒体:“但事情不一定全是负面的——有证据表明金雕可能会dislodge其他很多食性更泛的捕食者,比如红鸢,所以它们可能会带来积极影响。”)” 根据最后一段“Reintroducing an animal into its former ecosystem is not as simple as one may think. There are many factors to take into account, from climate changes to technological changes, and yes, local industries. However, worldwide reintroduction of various species, especially keystone species, has shown that their effect on the ecosystem can truly revitalize entire regions. Here’s hoping that over the next few years golden eagles will be seen in all their glory over the skies of England.(将一种动物重新引入它原先所属的生态系统,远没有人们想象的那么简单。从气候变化到技术变革,当然还有当地产业的影响,有诸多因素需要纳入考量。然而,世界各地各类物种,尤其是关键物种的再引入项目表明,它们对生态系统的作用真的可以让整片区域重获生机。希望在未来几年,人们能在英格兰的上空再次见到威风凛凛的金雕)”可知,作者既意识到该项目存在诸多需要考量的因素,态度谨慎,同时又对项目充满期待。 D There is growing concern about the impact of social media on the information people encounter that shapes their beliefs about the world. Misinformation about science and politics can influence voting behavior, support for research, and people’s health-related actions. To explore whether people find true messages more persuasive than false messages, researchers did studies examining people’s reactions. The first two studies focused on persuasion. Participants and a large language model (LLM) were asked to generate social media messages designed to be either true or false, covering a set of topics. Then, a second group rated these statements, judging their truthfulness, their willingness to share them, and the emotions they aroused. Their belief in each topic was measured before and after reading the statement, with the difference showing how persuasive the message was. For both human and LLM-generated statements, participants rated the true messages as more truthful and were more willing to share them. The true messages increased people’s belief in the topic. The only difference was that untrue human-generated messages slightly decreased belief, while untrue LLM messages had a small, insignificant effect. A second set of studies asked individuals (or LLM) generating messages to make them as attention-getting as possible. When participants rated these messages, the same pattern of results emerged. Again, participants were able to distinguish the true messages from the false messages and found the true messages more persuasive. Interestingly, when no truth instruction was given, individuals generating persuasive statements tended to write statements that were rated by other people as true. However, when these individuals aimed for attention-getting content, there was a greater tendency for those statements to be false, though they were less persuasive. These results offer hope: People seemed reasonably good at distinguishing between true and false statements, even ones generated by AI. However, a key complexity remains. They only tested what happens when people see a particular statement once. In real life, we often rely on repeated claims from others, especially experts, to judge what is true. If we are constantly surrounded by false information, we may eventually have trouble telling actual facts from merely familiar repetitions. 12. Why was participants’ belief in each topic measured? A. To compare participants’ belief shifts. B. To test participants’ willingness to share. C. To evaluate the truthfulness of statements. D. To judge the persuasiveness of each message. 13. What do the studies reveal? A. Persuasion depends on emotional appeal. B. The truth of a message increases its persuasiveness. C. False LLM-generated messages reduce belief greatly. D. People share attention-getting messages more willingly. 14. Which instruction makes statements more likely to be false? A. Making the messages as persuasive as possible. B. Ensuring the messages are scientifically accurate. C. Focusing on topics that are unfamiliar to the participants. D. Creating statements that are as attention-getting as possible. 15. What message does the last paragraph convey? A. Familiar claims equal real facts. B. Information surroundings count. C. People can recognize lies with ease. D. Experts’ opinions deserve total trust. D 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第二段“Their belief in each topic was measured before and after reading the statement, with the difference showing how persuasive the message was.(研究人员在参与者阅读陈述前后测量他们对每个话题的看法,这个差值能够体现这条信息有多大说服力。)” 根据第三段“For both human and LLM-generated statements, participants rated the true messages as more truthful and were more willing to share them. The true messages increased people's belief in the topic.(对于人类和大语言模型生成的陈述,参与者认为真实信息可信度更高,也更愿意转发它们。真实信息提升了人们对该话题的认同度。)”可知,信息本身的真实性会提升它的说服力。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“However, when these individuals aimed for attention-getting content, there was a greater tendency for those statements to be false, though they were less persuasive.(然而,当这些人以打造吸睛内容为目标时,这些陈述更有可能是虚假的,尽管它们说服力不强。)” 根据最后一段“If we are constantly surrounded by false information, we may eventually have trouble telling actual facts from merely familiar repetitions.(如果我们一直被虚假信息包围,我们最终可能难以区分真正的事实和只是听熟了的重复说法。)” Habits That Make Your Mind Stronger than Ever Mental strength isn’t inborn; it’s something you have to constantly work on. When you come across someone with mental toughness, you should know they didn’t reach that point by accident. Through practice and intention, we can cultivate habits that make our minds stronger and more adaptable to life’s challenges.  ____16____ Some people hold the misguided belief that resting or taking care of yourself is a sign of weakness. Those who are mentally strong reject such ideas. They work hard, but they also make time to have fun and relax. They recognize that all of these things are essential for productivity and emotional balance.  Set boundaries. Understand that sometimes you have to say “no”. It’s not meant to push people away, but to create the space necessary for growth and peace. ____17____ As long as you make choices based on your values, you won’t feel guilt or pressure when turning others down.  Embrace solitude for self-discovery. ____18____ It gives clarity, and provides an opportunity to assess goals and values. By spending time alone, you learn who you are without the influence of others. And as you continue to grow, that self-awareness serves as your compass for making aligned decisions.  Challenge self-doubt. No one is free from feelings of self-doubt, insecurity, and fear. But mentally-strong people don’t let those thoughts run the show. Instead, they push back whenever their thoughts turn negative. They experiment even if it means risking failure. ____19____ These habits are simple to understand, yet they aren’t easy to carry out. ____20____ But if you stick to a plan, you will gradually notice a change not just in how you think, but how you live.  A. Make self-care a priority.  B. Balance work and rest properly.  C. So you can let your brain rest and refresh.  D. It takes commitment and a high degree of self-awareness.  E. Over time, this habit strengthens confidence and self-trust.  F. For instance, you might decline a social event in favor of rest.  G. Making time for yourself is a way to reflect, recharge and reconnect. 16. A 17. F 18. G 19. E 20. One Monday morning, her phone buzzed suddenly. “Vern Dodge, Vern Dodge,” the text message read. Lauren frowned — she didn’t know anyone by that name. She ignored it, thinking it was a mistake. But the texts kept coming, day after day. “Vern Dodge, are you there?” one said. Another asked, “Did you get the photos?” Someone had clearly given out the wrong number. But who on earth was this Vern Dodge? Driven by strong curiosity, Lauren searched for the name online. She typed “Vern Dodge photographer” into a search engine. Soon she found something totally unexpected. Vern was a famous 72-year-old photographer from San Francisco, who had spent decades traveling the world with his camera. He captured life one frame at a time. Deeply impressed by his amazing works, Lauren decided to reach out to him. An email was sent. She did not get a reply at once, but she checked her inbox every night after work.  A week later, a short reply popped up on her screen. Vern was surprised and sorry for all the trouble he had caused. Their talks slowly started from there. Emails turned into phone calls, and phone calls later became weekly video chats. They talked about their small daily stories, shared funny videos, and found they had far more to say than they had expected. The connection between them grew steady, strong and completely real.  Before long, Lauren noticed Vern was falling into hard times. The fast-changing digital world confused him a lot, and he could not figure out how to post his photos online to reach more people. His photos remained unseen, and his income dropped sharply. He felt lost in a world of apps and algorithms. Lauren’s heart ached for him. She knew she couldn’t just watch — she had to act. But how could a young woman help an old photographer find his footing again? Lauren jumped into action without hesitation.  ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ In just a few weeks, the campaign raised more than $40,000.  ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Lauren jumped into action without hesitation. She first spent three evenings making clear step-by-step guides for Vern, with screenshots to teach him to post his works on social platforms. Then she came up with a more ambitious plan: she launched a crowdfunding campaign online, calling on art lovers to support the old photographer to hold a physical photo exhibition. She attached dozens of Vern’s classic never-seen-before photos to the post, and the story of their warm acquaintance soon spread widely. In just a few weeks, the campaign raised more than $40,000. The fund was enough to cover all costs of the exhibition. Months later, Vern’s show opened in a San Francisco gallery, drawing crowds of visitors. Many of them said they were touched not only by the amazing photos, but also by the special friendship between the young office worker and the old photographer. What started as a wrong text message finally turned into a warm bond that helped an aging artist get his long-overdue recognition. 词汇激活 行为类 ①呼吁:call on/appeal to ②吸引:draw/attract 情绪类 ①感动:touched/moved ②温暖的情感纽带:a warm bond/a warm connection 【点睛】【高分句型1】Then she came up with a more ambitious plan: she launched a crowdfunding campaign online, calling on art lovers to support the old photographer to hold a physical photo exhibition. D. It contributed to the discussions about slavery.   D. It established the town as a centre for social reform.  B What do rubber and an ancient ball game have in common? Amateurs Make the History C Golden eagles are incredible, magnificent birds. D There is growing concern about the impact of social media on the information people encounter that shapes their beliefs about the world. Habits That Make Your Mind Stronger than Ever Mental strength isn’t inborn; it’s something you have to constantly work on. A. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
