Zhang Wei is a 32-year-old engineer from Shanghai. In 2020, he made a big decision—he left his well-paid job in the city and returned to his hometown in Gansu Province to start a new project.
Zhang Wei’s hometown is a small village in the mountains. When he was a child, the village was very poor. People used to farm on small pieces of land. There was no running water or electricity in many homes. Children had to walk over two hours to get to the nearest school.
After Zhang Wei finished college, he worked in Shanghai for eight years. During those years, he never forgot his hometown. He often thought about how to help the village develop. Finally, he decided to go back and bring changes.
Zhang Wei used his engineering skills to build a small factory that uses solar energy (太阳能). The factory produces machines that help farmers water their crops more efficiently. With these machines, farmers can save water and grow more vegetables. “In the past, farmers had to carry water from faraway rivers,” Zhang Wei said. “Now, our machines do the hard work.”
Over the past four years, the village has changed a lot. More than 50 families have started using solar energy in their homes. A new school has been built with the money from the factory. Young people who left the village are starting to come back to work in the new factory.
Zhang Wei feels proud of what he has done. “Development doesn’t mean everyone has to go to big cities,” he said. “We can also make our hometowns better with our knowledge and effort.”

Dr. An grew up in one of these mountain villages. When he was 23, the village needed a new doctor. He gave up the chance to work in a big city hospital and stayed. “All the villagers here know me, and I know every one of them. They need me, so I stay,” he said.
There are no roads connecting most of the villages. To see patients, Dr. An has to walk for hours up and down steep mountains. Every day, he carries a 10-kilogram medical bag on his back and walks from village to village. In bad weather, he has to walk through heavy snow or falling rain. Many times he fell and got hurt, but he never stopped going.
Dr. An charges villagers only the cost of medicine, and he never asks for money for his service. For poor families, he even pays for the medicine himself. “I grew up poor, and I know what it’s like when you can’t pay for medical care,” he said.
In 2025, the local government built a new clinic in the main village and gave Dr. An new medical equipment. Now young Doctor Li Tao has come to work with him. Dr. An says he will keep working as long as his body allows. “I will keep walking these mountains until I can’t walk anymore,” he said. One day a professor (教授) entered the classroom and told the students they would have an examination in a moment. Then the professor gave out the papers. But the students were confused (困惑的) because there was nothing but just a black dot (点) in the center of the paper. The professor noticed their expressions and told them, “I want you to write about what you see.”
Although the students were still confused, they started writing. At the end of the class, the professor took all the answer sheets (页) and started reading the answers in front of the students. All of them described the black dot and tried to explain its position and something like that. After the professor finished reading, the whole class was silent. They were all worried that they failed the exam.
The professor began to explain, “Don’t worry. I am not going to give you grades for this. I just want you to think about something. Here everybody focused on the black dot instead of the white paper. It is the same as what we do in our lives. The white paper is just like our whole life and the black dot is the problems we face every day. We just care too much about things like a lack (缺乏) of money for beautiful clothes, but we seldom see that these problems are very small compared with our whole life. We should remember that there are more valuable things in life.”
We all live only once. So we should focus attention on the truly valuable things.
41. The professor told the students to describe the black dot on the paper.

A. drop out of B. take on C. come up with D. let down
【答案】A
drop out of辍学,退出;take on承担,呈现;come up with想出,提出;let down使失望。根据原因状语从句“because their families cannot afford costs”及空后的“school”可知,此处是固定短语drop out of school,意为“辍学,退学”。

A. for; to follow B. of; to follow C. for; follow D. of; follow
【答案】A
“It is + adj. + for/of sb. + to do sth.”
6. ________ foolish boy he is! He believed what the man said.
A. How B. What C. What an D. What a
感叹句中心词是名词boy,应用What引导,排除A;foolish以辅音音素开头,不定冠词用a,排除B、C。 应填What a。
7. —The old railway line ________ in 1901 and ________ for over 100 years.
—It is really old and slow.
A. built; used B. was built; was used
C. was built; has been used D. built; has used
8. —Where is Lucy? —She ________ the teachers’ office. She will be back in a minute.
A. has been to B. has gone to C. went to D. goes to

根据问句“Where is Lucy?”可知露西不在现场,结合答语“She will be back in a minute.”可知她去了某地尚未回来,has been to表示去过某地已返回,has gone to表示去了某地未返回,符合has gone to的用法。
9. —How long ________ you ________ this bike?
—For two years.
A. have; bought B. did; buy C. have; had D. do; have
应填have; had。
10. He used to ________ to school late, but now he doesn’t.

31. What was Zhang Wei’s job before he returned to his hometown?
A. A teacher. B. A farmer. C. An engineer. D. A doctor.
32. Why did Zhang Wei decide to return to his hometown?
A. Because he lost his job in Shanghai.
B. Because he wanted to help the village develop.
C. Because his parents asked him to go back.
D. Because the village offered him more money.
33. How long has Zhang Wei been back in his hometown?
A. For about 2 years. B. For about 4 years.
C. For about 6 years. D. For about 8 years.
34. Which of the following words can best describe Zhang Wei?
A. Brave and humorous. B. Kind and creative.
