Dear friends,
I am writing to introduce the community library volunteer program to all high school and vocational students.
Taking part in part-time volunteer work at the community library is a great way to gain valuable social experience and working skills for your future career. Every autumn, the community library opens this volunteer program and welcomes students aged from 16 to 19 to join us.
Volunteers in our library will take part in different kinds of simple but meaningful work. First, you need to sort out the returned books and place them on correct shelves. Second, you will guide different readers to look for books and digital resources they need. Third, you will help organize interesting reading activities for young children in the community. Besides, you are also expected to keep the reading environment clean, quiet and tidy for all readers.
You do not need to have any rich working experience to become a library volunteer. However, we hope all volunteers are patient, friendly and willing to learn new service skills quickly. According to the library rules, every volunteer needs to serve at least six hours per week during the library’s opening hours.
Before starting your formal volunteer work, all new volunteers will receive a free short training course. The training includes basic library rules and necessary service skills. If you finish more than 40 hours of volunteer service, you will receive an official volunteer certificate. This certificate is very useful for your future job applications and college admission.
This volunteer program can bring you many benefits. You can not only get practical working experience, but also communicate with different people in the community. It is also a good chance to improve your communication skills and teamwork spirit.
If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, please download and fill in the application form on the library official website. Remember to submit your application before October 10. The library will not accept any late applications.
Welcome to join our volunteer team.
Yours sincerely,
Community Library Office

Many people believe multitasking (多任务处理) — doing several things at the same time — can save time and improve work efficiency in daily study and office work. Lots of students and office workers are used to dealing with different tasks at one time, such as writing reports while answering messages or doing homework while listening to online courses. But a new research carried out by a team of brain scientists shows the opposite result.
Researchers carried out controlled experiments on over 300 young people aged from 18 to 26. They asked test persons to finish difficult memory tasks while replying to short text messages at the same time. Before the experiment, some volunteers thought they could deal with two things well together and believed multitasking would make them more productive. However, test results showed their task accuracy dropped greatly, and they spent more total time finishing all the given tasks than those who worked on one task at a time.
Scientists explain this phenomenon: Human brain cannot focus fully on two complex jobs at once. When we switch from one task to another, our brain needs extra time to readjust itself to new information and thinking ways. This process creates invisible time waste that most people fail to notice. Besides, frequent task switching from multitasking also raises mental tiredness easily, making people feel worn out after only a short period of work.
Dr. Smith leading this research suggests: When we need to finish important work, try single-task mode. Finish one task completely and then move on to the next one. This working habit helps reduce careless mistakes and improve real working speed in the long run.
30. ________ are the subjects of this experiment.
A. Over 300 senior teachers B. More than 300 young people
C. 18 to 26 years old office managers D. Less than 200 college students
31. What result will appear when people do multitasking in the experiment?
A. They spend less time on tasks. B. Their work accuracy rises.
C. They hardly feel tired. D. Their accuracy falls a lot.
32. What is Dr. Smith’s attitude to multitasking on important work?
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Uncertain. D. Uncaring.
33. What does the underlined word “switch” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. keep B. stop C. change D. repeat
B 31. D 32. A 33. C
根据第二段首句“Researchers carried out controlled experiments on over 300 young people aged from 18 to 26. (研究人员对300多名年龄在18岁至26岁之间的年轻人进行了对照实验。)”可知,实验对象是300多名18至26岁的年轻人。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段末句“test results showed their task accuracy dropped greatly, and they spent more total time ... (测试结果显示,他们的任务准确率大大下降,花费的总时间也更多了……)”可知,多任务处理时准确率大幅下降,且耗时也更多。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Dr. Smith leading this research suggests: When we need to finish important work, try single-task mode. Finish one task completely and then move on to the next one. This working habit helps reduce careless mistakes and improve real working speed in the long run. (领导这项研究的史密斯博士建议:当我们需要完成重要工作时,试试单任务模式。彻底完成一项任务,然后继续下一项。从长远来看,这种工作习惯有助于减少粗心的错误,提高实际的工作速度。)”可知,史密斯博士建议做重要工作时试试单任务模式,先彻底完成一件事再下一件,并指出这样能减少粗心错误、提高真实效率。可见他对“多任务处理”持否定、不提倡的态度。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。 根据第三段中“... from one task to another (……从一个任务到另一个任务)”及“This process creates invisible time waste that most people fail to notice. (这个过程造成了大多数人没有注意到的无形的时间浪费。)”可知,造成时间浪费说明是要在任务之间转换频繁,由此推断switch意为“转换、改变”,和change同义,switch from ... to ...意为“从……转换到……”。

When Linda was seventeen, her family went through hard times. Her father lost his job unexpectedly. Her mother’s small shop barely made money to cover daily costs. Linda had to give up her dream of taking professional art training classes. She worked part-time in a downtown café after school every weekday to support the whole family.
One rainy afternoon, an old lady came into the café. She ordered a cup of hot tea and sat quietly by the window. While Linda served her, the old woman noticed Linda’s sketch book placed beside the counter. Inside were many beautiful hand-drawn pictures of buildings, animals and local street views.
The old lady talked with Linda patiently and learned her whole story. Before leaving, she left a small envelope on the table. Linda opened it after the guest went away. There was some cash and a short note: “Don’t give up your art dream. Keep drawing.”
Linda was greatly moved. She used that money to buy painting materials. She kept drawing in her spare time whenever she was free. Years passed. Now Linda works as a freelance illustrator Honeybees play an extremely important role on our planet. These small insects do not only produce sweet honey for people. More importantly, they work as natural pollinators
When bees fly among different kinds of flowers, they carry pollen from one flower to another, helping plants produce fruits and seeds. A large number of vegetable, fruit and grain crops around the world depend heavily on bee pollination to grow well.
But in recent years, bee populations are dropping rapidly in many regions across the world. Several main reasons lead to this worrying problem. Pesticides used in farmland hurt bees’ health and weaken their ability to find food. Widespread wild flower areas are reduced because of city expansion and land development. Climate change also changes flower blooming time, breaking bees’ food supply chain.
Losing bees will bring serious influence on human society. Without enough bees, many fruit and vegetable output will fall sharply. Food variety will become limited, and the price of some farm produce may rise as well. It is hard for us to imagine our dining tables without these fresh farm products.
Luckily, people have realized this problem and are taking active action to protect honeybees. Farmers choose less harmful farm chemicals for their fields. Parks and communities plant more native wild flowers to offer enough food for bees all year round.
Some schools also open science projects for teenagers to learn about bee protection. Protecting bees means protecting our own food future for the next generations.
38. What is honeybees’ most important job besides making honey?
A. Killing harmful insects. B. Pollinating plants.
C. Building nests for other insects. D. Cleaning environment.
39. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Human activities are partly responsible for bees’ population drop.
B. Pesticides are the only reason why bees disappear.
C. Bees can easily get enough food in cities.
D. Flower blooming time will never change.
40. What result may we face if bees keep decreasing?
A. Honey will become totally free.
B. Climate will become much better.
C. More wild flowers will appear.
D. Some farm produce prices may rise.
41. The main idea of the whole passage is ________.
A. to introduce different kinds of bees living on the earth
B. to explain why honey tastes sweet and popular
C. to show the importance of honeybees and ways to protect them
D. to tell us how to plant more flowers in communities
B 39. A 40. D 41. C

根据 第一段中“More importantly, they work as natural pollinators. (更重要的是,它们是天然的传粉者。)”及第二段中“they carry pollen from one flower to another, helping plants produce fruits and seeds (它们把花粉从一朵花传到另一朵花,帮助植物结出果实和种子)”可知,除了酿蜜,蜜蜂最重要的工作是为植物传粉。
根据第三段中“Pesticides used in farmland hurt bees’ health and weaken their ability to find food. Widespread wild flower areas are reduced because of city expansion and land development. Climate change also changes flower blooming time, breaking bees’ food supply chain. (农田中使用的杀虫剂损害了蜜蜂的健康,削弱了它们寻找食物的能力。由于城市扩张和土地开发,广泛分布的野花区减少了。气候变化也改变了花朵的开花时间,破坏了蜜蜂的食物供应链。)”可知,第三段提到农药使用、城市扩张、土地开发、气候变化,这些都和人类活动有关,由此可推知,是蜜蜂数量下降的部分原因。
【40题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Without enough bees, many fruit and vegetable output will fall sharply. Food variety will become limited, and the price of some farm produce may rise as well. (没有足够的蜜蜂,许多水果和蔬菜的产量将急剧下降。食品种类将变得有限,一些农产品的价格也可能上涨。)”可知,蜜蜂持续减少,部分农产品价格可能上涨。

Wang Hao is an excellent young vocational school graduate from a remote mountain village in Guizhou. After finishing his school education, he chose to work in several big-city factories for three years instead of staying in his hometown. During this period, he took spare-time training courses and mastered practical modern Internet sales and live-stream operation skills, which laid a solid foundation for his future business.
His hometown is rich in special local resources. It produces high-quality wild mushrooms, pure local honey and beautifully hand-made bamboo products. All these goods are popular among people once they get to know them.
However, for quite a long time, these fine local products could hardly reach buyers outside the mountain area. The backward transportation and limited sales channels stopped the villagers from bringing their goods to the wider market. Most villagers could only sell a small quantity of products to nearby people at a rather low price.
Wang Hao decided to make a difference and help his villagers. He returned to his hometown and opened online live-stream rooms on popular e-commerce platforms. In his live shows, he showed the real quiet mountain village life and carefully introduced the advantages of local farm products to netizens all over the country. At the beginning, he met lots of difficulties: only a small number of people watched his live stream; some customers still felt doubtful about product quality and delivery speed.
He never gave up and kept improving his live-stream work. He broadcast the whole process of picking, checking and packing goods in front of the camera to show product quality. He also promised reliable after-sale service for every buyer. Slowly more customers trusted him. Year by year, online sales grew fast. Many villagers can sell their home-made goods through his online shop. Local family income rises obviously.
Wang Hao says rural areas contain huge chances for young people. Young people with new knowledge and creative thinking can help hometown develop while realizing their own personal value.
42. Where did Wang Hao gain his Internet sales related experience?
A. When he studied in vocational school.
B. While working in big-city factories.
C. From professional online business books.
D. From other successful village businessmen.
43. What was the main trouble for local products before Wang Hao’s return?
A. The price was too high for local people.
B. There were not enough farm workers to collect products.
C. The quality of goods failed to meet basic standards.
D. They lacked effective sales channels to reach buyers outside mountains.
44. We can infer ________ from the passage.

根据第一段“After finishing his school education, he chose to work in several big-city factories for three years instead of staying in his hometown. During this period, he took spare-time training courses and mastered practical modern Internet sales and live-stream operation skills (完成学业后,他选择在几家大城市工厂工作三年,而不是留在家乡。在此期间,他参加业余培训课程,掌握实用的现代网络销售和直播运营技能)”可知,王浩是在大城市工厂工作期间获得网络销售相关经验。
【43题详解】

The backward transportation and limited sales channels stopped the villagers from bringing their goods to the wider market
根据第五段“Year by year, online sales grew fast. Many villagers can sell their home-made goods through his online shop. Local family income rises obviously (年复一年,线上销量快速增长。很多村民可以通过他的网店售卖自家手工产品,当地家庭收入明显上涨)”可推断,村民收入上涨一部分得益于王浩的线上生意。

A. keep B. stop C. change D. repeat

A. Villagers’ income increased partly because of Wang Hao’s online business
B. Wang Hao earned money only by selling his own farm products
C. all customers trusted Wang Hao’s products from his very first live stream
D. Wang Hao learned live-stream skills when he was still living in the village

B. Complete Guidance on How to Grow Wild Mushrooms.
C. Live-stream Business Brings New Hope to Mountain Village.
