I must give you some advice and safety tips before we go any further. As it’s a working farm, please don’t frighten or injure the animals. We have a lot here, and many of them are now quite rare. And do stay at a safe distance from the tools: some of them have sharp points which can be pretty dangerous, so please don’t touch them. We don’t want any accidents, do we?
The ground is not flat, and I’m glad to see you’re all wearing sports shoes.
Now, children of all ages are very welcome here, and usually even very young children love the ducks and sheep, so do bring them along next time you come. I don’t think any of you have brought dogs with you, but in case you have, I’m afraid they’ll have to stay in the car park.

Yang Zhenning, born on October 1, 1922 in Hefei City, Anhui Province, is a Chinese physicist who made significant contributions.
In 1935, he told his parents his ambition to “win the Nobel Prize one day,” a childlike “bold statement” that later became a reality in 1957, becoming one of the first two Chinese Nobel Prize winners.
In 1945, he was chosen as a government-sponsored student from Tsinghua University to study in the United States. Three years later he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, where Professor Enrico Fermi became his hero and guide. With Fermi’s recommendation, he moved in 1949 to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and began a shining academic life.
Although he lived abroad, he always cared about his motherland. Learning that China’s atomic bomb was developed independently, he was deeply moved to tears. He gave lectures and speeches, causing an increase of Chinese scholars visiting China.
In 1980, he established the “Committee on Educational Exchange with China,” sponsoring nearly 100 Chinese scholars to study in the United States over more than a decade. These scholars later became the backbone of China’s scientific and technological development.
In 1999, shortly after retiring, Yang Zhenning came back to Tsinghua University as a full-time professor. He spent the next years raising money to set up the Institute for Advanced Study Foundation, which now helps young scientists work on mathematics, theoretical physics and cold-atom research. Even past eighty he taught General Physics to first-year students, rewrote his lecture notes and held weekly problem sessions. “Returning to Tsinghua is the most important choice of my later life,” he once said. Though Professor Yang has passed away, his spirit lives on in every lab and in the growing number of Chinese students who choose to explore science at home.
24. During which period did Yang “predict” he would win a Nobel Prize?
A. Childhood. B. Adolescence. C. Early adulthood. D. Middle age.
25. What does the “Committee on Scholarly Exchange with China” show?
A. Yang intended to reform China’s education system.

C
Traditionally, older people struggle with new tech, but this doesn’t have to be the case. With proper design, even the most hesitant user can unlock its significant benefits.
A primary barrier (阻碍) is a lack of understanding of technology and its advantages, along with difficulty in using high-tech tools, such as smart phones or computers. This often causes them to hesitate to adopt new technology. This is a mistake. Older people themselves must decide whether they want to accept new technology or miss out on its advantages.
Indeed, technology — particularly through platforms like social media — offers seniors invaluable opportunities: connecting with new friends, staying in touch with old ones and learning new skills. When seniors do adopt technology, the reasons are typically twofold: they’re forced to do so and they want to make their lives easier. Understanding these motivations is important for anyone aiming to encourage tech adoption among older adults.
Despite the increasing necessity of technology in modern life, some seniors resist (抵抗), arguing, “I managed before without technology. Why do I need it now?” Furthermore, frustration (沮丧) is common. “It’s not working.” is a complaint co-author Lucia heard many times from her late father, especially when it came to his cell phone, and he used technology well for the most part. Specific issues, such as struggling with tiny keypads or reading small text message fonts (字体), were constant sources of difficulty.
Addressing these issues requires better technology design made for seniors. Older users prefer simple and clear web pages. A previous study showed that many seniors like a website to be user-friendly with a simple interface (界面). As the study showed, “A simpler and more uniformly designed Internet would help to break down the psychological barriers faced by older users.” Although the study was conducted years ago, the problem with web design for senior users remains unresolved today, showing the ongoing need for age-friendly technological solutions.
28. Why do older people hesitate to accept new techs?
A. They have limited access to digital devices.
B. They find hi-tech products challenging to operate.
C. They have a negative attitude towards all new technologies.
D. They lack the basic knowledge to maintain digital tools.
29. What can we learn from the example of Lucia’s father?
A. Seniors can’t understand the text messages they receive.
B. Seniors refuse to use the small keypad on their phone.
C. Seniors often feel upset when using new technologies.
D. Seniors always face the breakdown of smart phones.
30. What might be discussed in the next paragraph?
A. Psychological barriers of seniors to adopt new technologies.
B. User-friendly solutions for fixing various computer problems.
C. Further studies related to seniors’ dissatisfaction with hi-techs.
D. Effective ways for web designers to simplify website interfaces.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Bridging the Tech Gap: Designing Senior-Friendly Technology.
B. To Say Yes to the Smart Phone: A Beautiful Mistake.
C. To Use or Not to Use: A Technological Barrier.
D. Unlocking Benefits: Why Seniors Need Technology?
B 29. C 30. D 31. A
根据第二段中的“A primary barrier (阻碍) is a lack of understanding of technology and its advantages, along with difficulty in using high-tech tools, such as smart phones or computers. This often causes them to hesitate to adopt new technology.(主要障碍是对技术及其优势缺乏了解,以及使用智能手机或电脑等高科技工具存在困难。这往往导致他们在采用新技术时犹豫不决。)”可知,老年人不愿接受新技术是因为他们发现高科技产品操作起来有难度。故选B项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Furthermore, frustration (沮丧) is common. “It’s not working.” is a complaint co-author Lucia heard many times from her late father, especially when it came to his cell phone, and he used technology well for the most part.(此外,沮丧是常见的。合著者露西娅经常从她已故的父亲那里听到“这不管用”的抱怨,尤其是在使用手机时,尽管他在大多数情况下都能较好地使用技术。)”可知,露西娅父亲的例子说明老年人使用新技术时经常感到沮丧。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Older users prefer simple and clear web pages. A previous study showed that many seniors like a website to be user-friendly with a simple interface (界面)... showing the ongoing need for age-friendly technological solutions.(老年用户更喜欢简洁明了的网页。此前一项研究表明,许多老年人喜欢界面简单、易于使用的网站……这表明仍然需要适合老年人的技术解决方案。)”可知,本段重点讨论老年用户对“简洁界面”的需求及当前设计的不足,由此可推测,下一段可能会探讨网页设计师简化网站界面的有效方法。故选D项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是首段“Traditionally, older people struggle with new tech, but this doesn’t have to be the case. With proper design, even the most hesitant user can unlock its significant benefits.(传统上,老年人在使用新技术时会遇到困难,但情况未必一定如此。通过合理的设计,即便是最犹豫的用户,也能发掘出新技术的巨大益处)”可知,文章主要围绕老年人使用新技术面临的困难展开,强调需要为老年人设计友好的技术,以缩小技术差距。因此,“弥合技术差距:设计适合老年人的技术”既点明“老年人与技术之间的鸿沟”,又突出“技术优化设计”的解决方案,精准概括文章“问题一方案”的逻辑框架,最适合作为本文标题。故选A项。
D
A major reason why plastic bags and yogurt containers aren’t recycled is that it’s much more frugal to make these products from the ground up (从头开始) than to recover them. A new recycling technique reported in the journal Science promises a cost-effective way to transform these common plastic waste items into high-quality liquid fuels.
What makes plastics useful, namely their strength and resistance to high temperatures, becomes an annoyance when it comes to recycling the materials. The strong carbon-carbon bonds in these plastics require very high temperatures to break, making the process energy-consuming. Once the bonds break, the smaller molecules (分子) that are created quickly form new bonds, giving unwanted chemicals. These side products then have to be broken down again, adding time and complexity.
Researchers developed a way to turn these plastics into useful fuels at temperatures below 100℃, without creating any side products. They conduct the chemical reaction in the presence of a new type of catalyst (催化剂) in a special acidic solution. In these reaction conditions, as soon as the carbon bonds in the plastic break apart, new bonds form in a controlled way, giving off the chemicals called alkanes. The alkanes can be used either as a fuel or as a raw material for new plastics. The entire reaction takes place in a single reaction container. It takes only three hours and occurs at 70℃. By comparison, existing recycling techniques typically require two stages, take much longer and need temperatures of over 200℃.
The catalyst that the researchers use is already used by some factories. But it will take more research to know whether the technique can be translated to more occasions. If so, such a one-step, low-cost method to turn single-use plastics into chemicals, fuels and high-value materials could go a long way in making the plastic economy sustainable.
32. What does the underlined word “frugal” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Typical. B. Reliable. C. Expensive. D. Economical.
33. What can we know about plastics from Paragraph 2?
A. They stretch easily and quickly. B. They fail to resist heat perfectly.
C. They are chemically stable. D. They produce deadly gases.
34. What is the main feature of the new way of recycling plastics?
A. Keeping new bonds from forming. B. Requiring high-temperature conditions.
C. Stressing cleanliness and speed. D. Extending the functions of plastics.
35. What is the researchers’ attitude toward the technique’s wide application?
A. Unconcerned. B. Cautious. C. Hopeless. D. Opposed.
D 33. C 34. C 35. B
根据第一段中的“A major reason why plastic bags and yogurt containers aren’t recycled is that it’s much more frugal to make these products from the ground up (从头开始) than to recover them.(塑料袋和酸奶盒未被回收的一个主要原因是,从头开始制造这些产品比回收利用它们要frugal得多。)”
根据第二段中的“The strong carbon-carbon bonds in these plastics require very high temperatures to break, making the process energy-consuming.(塑料中牢固的碳碳键需要极高温度才能断裂,这使得回收过程十分耗能。)”
根据第三段中的“Researchers developed a way to turn these plastics into useful fuels at temperatures below 100℃, without creating any side products.(研究人员开发了一种在100℃以下将这些塑料转化为有用燃料的方法,且不产生任何副产物。)”以及“It takes only three hours and occurs at 70℃.(仅需三小时即可完成,且反应温度为 70℃。)”
根据最后一段中的“But it will take more research to know whether the technique can be translated to more occasions.(但要了解这项技术能否推广到更多场合,还需要更多的研究。)”

Body language is a kind of communication using body movements or gestures. It involves the slightest movements that go unnoticed, such as a quick wink or a minor lift of the eyebrows. Participants often give away their feelings unconsciously through body language in the moment.___36___ Here are two fundamental but highly motivational signs that should be watched for.
____37____ This indicates that a person creates an unconscious barrier between themselves and others. It can also indicate that he is cold. When the overall situation is friendly, it can mean that a person thinks deeply about what is being discussed. ____38____When you see such body signals, you need to adjust your presentation to fit a hostile (敌对的) situation. If, for instance, you’re negotiating salary with your boss when you notice these signals, realize that he is not thinking favorably. ____39____
The other one is consistent eye contact. It indicates that a person is thinking positively of what the speaker is saying. It can also mean that the other person doesn’t trust the speaker enough to “take his eyes off” the speaker. ____40____ If you sense that they are upset about something, ask about their thoughts on the subject. If you sense that they’re bored, guide the conversation to a different topic. When you have the advantage of reading inner feelings from body signals, encourage the person to express themselves. It will deepen communication, leading to greater efficiency of the conversation.
A. Your raise could probably be in question.
B. You should persuade him to think twice about the pay rise.
C. People from all walks of life use body language in all fields.
D. Grasping this silent language can be an advantage in many situations.
E. But in a serious situation, it can mean that a person is expressing opposition.

My mother only has one eye. I have hated her ever since I was young. I was always overcome with anger whenever she came near me, and I felt deeply ashamed. She worked as a cook in my school, preparing lunch for students and teachers every day. I never wanted anyone to discover that she was my mother.
One afternoon, as I was walking home from school, I caught sight of my mother standing near the school gate. She waved at me with a warm smile and called out, “Hello, my dear!” A wave of embarrassment washed over me. How could she behave like this in front of everyone? Without uttering a word, I turned around and ran away as fast as I could.
The next day at school, one of my classmates pointed at me and laughed, “Hey, your mother only has one eye!” I was at a loss for words. I wished she would simply disappear from my life. That evening, I shouted at her, “If you only exist to make people laugh at me, why don’t you just die?” She said nothing. She merely wiped her eyes and walked into her room.
Years later, I moved to another city and built a life with my own family. One day, there was a knock at the door. When I opened it, my mother stood there. My children stared at her in astonishment. I shouted, “Go away!” She looked at me with profound sadness and whispered, “I’m sorry. I must have the wrong address.” Then she turned and walked away without looking back.
A few years later, she passed away. Someone gave me a letter from her. It read:
“My dearest son, I think of you every day. I am sorry for coming to your home... You see, when you were little, you lost your eye in an accident. As your mother, I gave you mine. I am glad that you can see the whole world through my eyes. With all my love, Your mother.”

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Paragraph 1
A flood of mixed feelings rushed through my whole body. Standing there, I was frozen, my hands trembling uncontrollably. Tears welled up in my eyes, blurring my vision. I wanted to run after her, to beg for her forgiveness, but my feet seemed rooted to the ground. All the anger, all the shame, all the selfishness I had harbored for years crashed down upon me like a tidal wave. I realized then that her one eye had given me the whole world, while my two eyes had been blind to the greatest love ever known.
Paragraph 2
Nothing would ever be quite the same as before. I held that letter tightly against my chest, feeling every word burn into my heart. I rushed out of the house, running toward the small cemetery where she was buried. The wind whipped my face, but I didn’t care. Kneeling before her grave, I whispered, “Mom, I see you now. I see your love.” From that day on, I lived not just for myself, but for her too — carrying her love in my heart, honoring her memory in every act of kindness, and never forgetting the woman who gave everything so I could see the world.

B. Cautious. C. Hopeless. D. Opposed.
