When Rashid Anbar's building in the Naser neighbourhood in Gaza City came under attack,he
ran with his family, leaving behind the animals he had spent years loving, feeding and protecting. And
there was no time to carry even just one of them to safety.
He believes the grief of losing an animal we've cared for can earry an emotional weight not far
from that of losing a person close to you. That loss sent Rashid into a depression, and for a long time,
he refused to even consider caring for animals again.
However, even in grief,he continued working through the war, running first-aid psychological
support sessions for children in partnership with the Qattan Centre inside the United Nations Relief and
Works Agency, and feeding homeless animals whenever he was able to reach them.
Over time, displaced families started coming to him to vaccinate(接种疫苗)their animals or seek
medical advice.Rashid began using these visits as an opportunity, giving children the chance to get
close to animals and take photos with them. The camp management team saw what was happening and
suggested he launch formal psychological support sessions for children built around animals.
At first,Rashid said no.He was terrified of growing attached again, only to lose the animals for a
second time.It was the persistence of the project's staff that eventually changed his mind, especially
once they pointed out that the idea might not only help the children, but could help him work through
his own grief,too.
Today,he works as part of the project's team, using animals as a tool for both medical support and
learning.One child told him simply:"When I'm sad,and I sit next to the animals,I feel at peace."The
animals that were once his livelihood and his closest companions have become something more-a way
to help children wom down by war find a little steadiness and joy again.

Grabbing a bike and heading out for a ride may be an underrated(被低估的)way to support mental
well-being,and a new scientific review suggests the benefits may go beyond a simple mood lift.
Bicycling has long been praised for its physical benefits. But this review focuses on something
less talked about:what happens in the brain and emotional life of the rider.Researchers conducted a
broad mapping of existing scientific literature. After applying strict requirements,87 studies made the
final cut. Those studies spanned()19 countries, covering a wide range of people including children,
older adults, and those living with conditions such as Parkinson's disease, depression, and cancer.
Multi-session programs appeared particularly effective at building psyehological benefits like
resilience(and a sense of connection to one's environment.On the thinking side,studies found
benefits in areas like attention, memory, and mental flexibility.Every study that looked at social well-
being reported positive effects, suggesting that getting on a bike with or around other people may be
one of the more reliable upsides.
Bicycling's benefits likely come from multiple directions.Riding outdoors combines physical
effort with nature exposure and often social interaction.Structured bicycling programs can also give
participants a meaningful routine and a sense of achievement, which researchers note may
independently support emotional well-being.
However, most studies were conducted in laboratory settings, which may not reflect how most
people actually ride bikes.Researchers call for more work in real-world settings. For now,the evidence
points in a hopeful direction:regular bicycling may support mental and social well-being for many
people. But realizing that potential will require studying a much broader slice of the population,in the
kinds of places where people actually ride.
28.How did researchers carry out this new review?
A.By analyzing existing scientific literature.
B.By collecting first-hand data in 19 countries.
C.By carrying out new tests in laboratory settings.
D.By observing cyelists in real riding environments.
29.What benefit of cycling is mentioned in the new study?
A.It improves people's physical fitness.
B.It ensures long-term mental flexibility
C.It brings mental, thinking and social gains.
D.It treats patients with depression and cancer.
30.What factor may lead to cycling's mental benefits?
A.Less nature exposure.
B.Often social contact.
C.Escape from daily routines.
D.Reduced disease risks.
31.What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A.Advantages of real riding
B.Findings of earlier researches.
C.Proof of cycling's mental gains.
D.Limitations of current studies.

In French author Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time,a bite of madeleine cake brings
back a flood of childhood memories.Scientists call this phenomenon()"Proust's madeleine".Now
a study suggests these early childhood smell memories are stored in specific brain parts.
"Smells are special signs for recalling personal memories,"says the study's author Nathalie
Mandairon.Scientists have suspected for decades that the phenomenon involved certain brain areas,
specifically long-lived granule cells(in the brain's smell center. These tiny cells form on a
child's first day of life and tend to catch pleasant smells from their first decade, which may explain why
smell-awakened childhood memories stay vivid even when forgotten.
Mandairon's team surveyed over 600 volunteers and found that most had remembered pleasant
childhood experiences from the "Proust's madeleine"phenomenon. The researchers then exposed mice
to pleasing natural smells when they were about three to four weeks old,an age similar to early
childhood in humans.Normal mice were attracted to the smells, but not mice whose granule cells had
been silenced by optical fibers()implanted in the animals'brains to switeh these cells on and off.
The experiment proves that early smell memories are fixed in granule cells, which can form special
connections with the brain's reward and pleasure areas.Related human surveys also show that this
phenomenon is mostly linked with positive memories.
Physical chemist Herve This says the study offers a fascinating explanation of the brain areas
involved. But he would have liked to see it account for negative childhood memories as well because
"unpleasantness is equally significant."Biophysicist Luca Turin, another expert, broadly welcomes the
study. However,he suggests that we should not take smell's unique role in memory for granted. He
believes every sense may awaken strong memories."The only special feature of smell is that it is like

a password and needs to be exact,"he adds.
32.Which of the following shows the"Proust's madeleine"phenomenon?
A.Aged wine calls up hard times.
B.Fresh bread reminds one of early years.
C.Family photos bring back past memories.
D.Old records make people recall schooldays.
33.What can be inferred from Mandairon's research?
A.Smell memories are mostly negative.
B.Tiny brain cells are formed after childhood.
C.Granule cells link smell memories to pleasure.
D.Mice and humans share the same smell memories.
34.What is Luca Turin's attitude towards the study?
A.Supportive.
B.Objective.
C.Doubtful.
D.Unclear.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.New Findings on Brain Cells
B.What Makes Memories Last

Making things last
Circular economy is about moving away from those familiar patterns of"take, make, and throw
away".It asks that we prioritize()repairing,reusing,sharing,borrowing,and recyeling.
Aiming to reduce waste and reuse existing resources,it's a concept with the UK government to
announce a strategy this year.3
Save money and storage.
One of the most immediate benefits of circular living is financial.Adopting a circular mindset
might mean repairing a favourite pair of boots, which is often cheaper than buying a new pair 37
Or it could also mean sharing unused garage items to save others money and free your space.
Keep things local.
Connecting with people in your community can feel awkward when everyone seems to be isolated
these days.38-Through repair cafes,clothes exchange,community gardens,and tool libraries,you
can learn practical skills, meet neighbours, and share resources. Why not search your local Facebook
group or community noticeboard for upcoming events?
39
Circular thinking has the potential to change the way we relate to the things we own.Instead of
mindless consumption,we might pause to ask whether we really"need"that new item, whether we
could borrow it,or whether there's a pre-loved option available.
The circular economy isn't about being perfect or never buying anything new.40Every time
we repair instead of replace, borrow instead of buy,or pass something on instead of sending it to landfill,
we help manage and protect resources for generations to come.
A.Rethink what we own.
B.Live a simple lifestyle.
C.Many people have begun to accept this idea.
D.It could mean shopping secondhand to reduce spending.
E.But why should we,as individuals,adopt this approach?
F.It's about small choices that add up to something bigger.
G.However, circular living has a way of bringing people together.

Dear David,
I’m delighted to receive your letter asking for advice on a weekend activity combining exercise and scenery appreciation. I’d strongly recommend hiking along the suburban greenway.
What makes it a perfect option is that it gives you a full-body workout while allowing you to feast your eyes on the amazing autumn scenery of lakes, woods and rolling hills covered in warm golden leaves. Wandering along the trail, you’ll feel totally refreshed as you breathe in fresh air and shake off the tiredness from tight study schedules.
As for practical tips, do wear comfortable sneakers, take a bottle of water and pack a small snack for extra energy. Setting off early will also help you avoid the midday crowds.
Wish you a wonderful weekend!
Yours,
Li Hua

根据第一段 “In French author Marcel Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time, a bite of madeleine cake brings back a flood of childhood memories. Scientists call this phenomenon (现象) “Proust’s madeleine”.” A.
根据第三段 “The experiment proves that early smell memories are fixed in granule cells, which can form special connections with the brain’s reward and pleasure areas.” A 与原文 “this phenomenon is mostly linked with positive memories”相悖;B 根据第二段 “These tiny cells form on a child’s first day of life” 可知,细胞出生时就形成;D “小鼠和人类拥有相同气味记忆” 曲解文意,小鼠实验只是类比研究,故选 C。
根据第四段 “Biophysicist Luca Turin, another expert, broadly welcomes the study. However, he suggests that we should not take smell’s unique role in memory for granted.”

【答案】36.E 37.D 38.G 39.A 40.F
根据原文 “Aiming to reduce waste and reuse existing resources, it’s a concept for which the UK government will announce a strategy this year.”,上文介绍循环经济的定义、原则以及英国政府将要出台相关战略,属于宏观层面介绍。E 选项 “But why should we, as individuals, adopt this approach?”
根据原文 “Adopting a circular mindset might mean repairing a favourite pair of boots, which is often cheaper than buying a new pair.”,本段小标题为 Save money and storage.,主题是践行循环生活节约资金。前文举修靴子省钱的例子,D 选项 “It could mean shopping secondhand to reduce spending.” 是并行的省钱实例,和后文 “Or it could also mean sharing unused garage items to save others money and free your space.”
根据原文 “Connecting with people in your community can feel awkward when everyone seems to be isolated these days.”,前文提到当下人们彼此孤立,社区交往让人尴尬;后文 “Through repair cafés, clothes exchange, community gardens, and tool libraries, you can learn practical skills, meet neighbours, and share resources.” G 选项 “However, circular living has a way of bringing people together.”
根据原文 “Circular thinking has the potential to change the way we relate to the things we own. Instead of mindless consumption, we might pause to ask whether we really “need” that new item, whether we could borrow it, or whether there’s a pre-loved option available.”, A 选项 “Rethink what we own.”
根据原文 “The circular economy isn’t about being perfect or never buying anything new.”, 本句采用`isn’t about…`结构。F 选项 “It’s about small choices that add up to something bigger.” 用`It’s about…`与之形成 “不是…… 而是……” 的对照结构,阐释循环经济的真正内涵:不在于追求完美,而在于微小选择汇聚成巨大影响,与后文修理、借用、旧物流转等微小行动相呼应,故选 F。

【听力原文】
(Text 1)
M: Hello, Miss. I’d like to check out.
W: Well, sir, if you want to check out now, we’ll charge you 300 dollars as well.
M: Okay.
(Text 2)
M: Hi. We’d like four tickets for the evening show, and we’d all like to sit together.
W: My apologies. We only have three seats together.
(Text 3)
M: When does the lecture begin?
W: I think it starts at 3:00 in the afternoon and lasts two hours.
M: Oh, no. I’ll reschedule my four o’clock meeting.
(Text 4)
M: This is a picture of my family. The one with red hair is my brother.
W: Cool. Who is the guy with grey hair?
M: That’s my dad. He used to have brown hair.
(Text 5)
M: What a terrible day! It’s impossible to get across the road here, and it’s hard to call a taxi.
W: It’s really raining heavily. I don’t think I’ve seen such rain in the past five years.
(Text 6)
W: I just saw Jack at the bus station. Why is he waiting for a bus?
M: He has to go to a lecture at 10:00 this morning.
W: I know that. But why does he have to wait for a bus? He always goes to school by bicycle, doesn’t he?
M: That’s right. But his bicycle broke down, and he had it repaired this morning.
W: Thank you for letting me know it.
(Text 7)
W: What do you think of this house? It’s outside of the city. But it’s very nice.
M: You’re right. It is nice. It’s large with a sunny living room and a big backyard. Our kids would love that. But this place is pretty far into the countryside. You know I prefer city life to being outdoors. We’ll spend a lot of gas driving on the highway to get into town.
W: That is the main disadvantage of this place — being far from work, school, and shops. But it has three bedrooms and a new kitchen. And the rent is very fair — much less than we would pay in the city.
M: That’s true. I’ll think about it!
(Text 8)
W: Hi, Matt. Would you like to come to the library with me and Jane on Saturday? We asked Sam and Pete too, but they’re both busy.
M: What are you going to do, Susie?
W: I want to collect some magazines for our history project.
M: Oh, a good idea. Which library shall we go to? Is it the one near the shopping center?
W: That one is closed. We’re going to the one opposite the park. It’s not the one by the hospital.
M: And how are we getting there?
W: My mum can’t drive us, so we’re going to walk from my house. We can take the bus back afterwards.
M: OK. What time shall I be at your house then?
W: Well, the library opens at ten thirty, so come at ten. It takes about twenty minutes to get there.
M: Fine. See you later!
(Text 9)
M: Hello, this is the Oxford Summer Course booking office. How can I help you?
W: I’d like to book a place on a summer course this summer.
M: Certainly, let me take down some details and then I’ll give a place to you. Which country do you come from?
W: Spain.
M: Well, we’ve got two different courses this summer. We’ve got one for art history and music and the other one for photography. Which one would you like to book?
W: The latter, please.
M: The course you’re interested in runs three times, oh sorry, twice this summer, from June to July and again from August to September. Which one suits you best?
W: I think the one from August to September does.
M: That’s fine. Just a few more details and then we’re done. As for the place you’ll live in, we have three different types. You can choose from a shared room, a shared flat or a shared house.
W: Oh, definitely not a shared room. I’d prefer a shared flat.
M: OK. Well, that’s all you’ve booked for the summer course starting in August.
W: Thank you. Goodbye!
(Text 10)
M: Good morning everybody, today I would like to focus mainly on how to improve your English for practical purposes. In English, as in most languages, there are four main aspects which are speaking, listening, reading and writing. I believe some activities can help all four of these. Firstly, reading newspapers has always been able to help to improve one’s English. Besides, reading books is also helpful. While reading newspapers can improve your English, I feel that it may be too boring for high school students. There are books which are suitable for high school students, so I think that books are better for you to improve your English. Another activity is watching the news. I think watching the news on TV can be interesting for students. Another advantage of watching the news is that you can learn some new words. I hope my speech has been helpful to all of you. Thank you for taking the time to listen.
