At 17, Lily Shireman manages daily operations on her family’s farm in Harrison County, Indiana, and has gained wide respect for her practical knowledge of soil conservation(保护). But that is not what she prides herself on. “Our farm ground was failing,” Shireman said, standing on a hillside covered with thick green grass and eyeing a field of strong and thick crops. “We weren’t getting high yields out of our crops, so we knew we needed to do something else.”
The farm where Shireman has gained most of her handson experience was bought by her family years ago. Longterm intensive row cropping had left the land severely damaged, with serious soil loss and exhausted earth dragging down crop production. Back then, as a teenager, she refused to accept the limits of conventional farming. Rather than depending heavily on expensive chemical fertilizers, the family shifted to a farming model centered on livestock and soil regeneration.
“You can’t grow something if you don’t have the soil to grow it in,” Shireman pointed out. She helps oversee roughly 280 cattle and has taken effective conservation measures including bale grazing(包草放牧), rotational grazing(划区轮牧)and cover crops. Cattle’s waste is spread across fields to build soil organic matter.
These efforts have produced obvious results. Once worn-away hillsides have recovered, and local wildlife has returned. Shireman often speaks to landowners and student groups to share her experience. “Age is no barrier when it comes to conservation,” she tells her audience. She holds the belief that young people’s fresh ideas and passion can help solve the tough challenges in modern agriculture.
24. How does Lily feel about the current conditions of her family’s farm?
A. Satisfied. B. Upset. C. Stressed. D. Inspired.
25. What made the Shireman family decide to change their farming practices?
A. The high cost of cattle raising.
B. The poor condition of their farmland.
C. The need to get more hands-on experience.
D. The ineffectiveness of chemical fertilizers.
26. What can we learn about Lily’s farm?
A. It makes no use of animal waste.
B. It depends heavily on chemical fertilizers.
C. It is intended mainly for wildlife protection.
D. It has seen improved environment conditions.
27. What can be inferred about Lily from the last paragraph?
A. She values young pelple’s role in concervation.
B. She aims to make big profits from her farm.
C. She is committed to wildlife protection.
D. She is passionate about public speaking.
C
“Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back,” runs an old joke, “and he’ll be speechless.” This rests on a common assumption: Italians are talkative and emotional, and all that arm-waving is said to show it.
Susan Goldin-Meadow of the University of Chicago has a different view. Emotions come out in lots of ways: facial expressions, posture, tone of voice and so on. But people are doing something different when they use gestures with speech, which she sums up in her new book, “Thinking with Your Hands”. It is a tour through a lifetime’s research.
Almost everyone gestures, not just Italians. After a research session, experimental subjects(受试者)were told that they were being watched for gestures. They apologized for not having made any — but were actually doing so the entire time. People born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. A woman born without arms but with “phantom limb syndrome”(幻肢综合征)describes how she uses her phantom arms when she talks — but not when she walks. All these findings suggest that, in some ways, thinking is connected with our bodies; we do not think with our brains alone.
In fact, gestures that accompany speech are a second channel of information. Subjects watch a film in which a cat runs but are told to lie and say it jumped. They do so in words, yet their hands make a running gesture. Similarly, people who say they support sexual equality but gesture with their hands lower when talking about women are not indicating women’s height; they can be shown to have biases of which they may be unaware.
In the drama “The Crown”, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may give away her real emotions, so she is trained to speak without gesturing. No one would think that gesturing shows only a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and it effectively aids both.
28. Why does the author tell the old joke about Italians in Paragraph 1?
A. To show that Italians are talkative.
B. To prove that gestures are useless.
C. To introduce a different view on gestures.
D. To criticize Italian culture.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Gestures are universal and tied to thought.
B. Gestures are more common among blind people.
C. People can control their gestures when they focus.
D. Gestures are only useful for those who cannot speak.
30. The word “biases” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. unfair opinions B. dishonest words
C. physical reactions D. personal habits
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Speech: A Direct Channel of Information
B. Gestures: A Window into Mind and Speech
C. Italian’s Body Language: A National Characteristic
D. Thinking with Your Hands: A Lifetime’s Research
D
On busy streets in Finland, many middle-aged people lift their bifocal(双焦的) glasses, turning their heads repeatedly to switch between distant road signs and closeup phone screens. Few passers-by know a Finnish firm named IXI is developing smart glasses that may end such annoyance.
Aiming to deliver sharp vision across different distances and remove the need for bifocals, this technology represents a major leap forward.
Traditional bifocals feature separate zones for near and far vision, forcing users to move their heads and limiting their sight. By contrast, IXI’s product enables sharp vision at all distances without such awkward movements. Several test-version glasses are now under assessment. The builtin battery can last two days and gets charged overnight. The company is also working on frames that fit diverse face shapes.
Though adjustable-focus glasses are not completely new, IXI’s product marks noticeable progress. Over ten years ago, Adlens produced adjustable glasses that users could only set by hand once, with no further change available after the single setting. IXI’s glasses, however, keep adjusting all the time by itself based on the user’s viewing position. Its key technology relies on a special material called liquid-crystal(液晶) lenses(镜片). A built-in eye-tracker and a light-based distance-measuring system work jointly to judge object distance. Electric signals reposition liquid crystals to adjust lenses, finishing the whole process within 0.2 seconds, faster than human eyes’ natural focus.
Niko Eiden, head of IXI, notes that the system turns existing theoretical technology into practical real-time service for users. Even so, challenges remain before commercial launch. Vision-correction products face strict medical rules. Designers must fit the battery without adding too much weight. Further real-world tests, including driving-related trials, are also required.
32. Who would benefit most directly from this technology?
A. People losing their glasses.
B. People caring about the weight of glasses.
C. People relying on bifocals.
D. People working in dark environments.
33. According to paragraphs 2 and 3, IXI’s smart glasses are designed to ______.
A. widen users’ visual range by changing lens sizes.
B. free users from repeated head movements for clear sight.
C. provide better eyesight for those with poor night vision.
D. completely satisfy the needs of people of all face shapes.
34. What makes IXI’s glasses different from Adlens’ earlier product?
A. No need for charging.
B. More common materials.
C. Much lower cost for users.
D. Automatic and constant adjustment.
35. What will IXI most probably do next?
A. Increase speed and cut cost.
B. Promote the glasses to global markets.
C. Run more tests and meet medical rules.
D. Replace liquid crystals and add safety functions.
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Tips for Encouraging Healthy Technology Use Among Teens
Technology connects us like never before. For teens, it’s a window to knowledge and creativity. Yet it also brings risks: social-media-driven peer pressure and harmful scrolling(刷手机)habits. With appropriate guidance, technology can benefit teenagers rather than hold them back. 36
· Set clear boundaries for online usage.
Without any proper limits, late-night gaming or endless scrolling can quickly turn into bad habits. 37 This reduces over-excitement and protects teens’ sleep from the harmful effects of blue light. Be firm yet flexible, so that these boundaries are more likely to be accepted and followed.
· Balance social media with real-life relationships.
38 Rather than only monitoring screen time, help them find self-worth offline and encourage offline meet-ups or volunteer work. Talk openly about the differences between online interaction and real-life bonds. No amount of virtual praise can replace the warmth of genuine in-person friendship.
· 39
Teenagers form values mostly by observing the behavior of adults around them. Avoid mindless scrolling and put away devices during meals and family conversations. Share your own offline hobbies in daily family life. When parents personally demonstrate what they advocate, teens will develop balanced habits naturally.
With these tips, technology can serve as a helpful tool for teens’ growth. 40 Good habits formed at home will benefit teenagers well into their future adulthood.
A. Set a good example of balanced digital use.
B. Direct teens toward positive online role models.
C. They, however, only work when put into practice regularly.
D. So how can teenagers manage their digital time independently?
E. To tackle this, create screen free zones and set bedtime device rules.
F. So how do parents help teens build a healthy relationship with digital devices?
G. Many teens chase online likes while ignoring valuable face-to-face communication.

参考范文(含部分本册书必背句式)
支持: Should We Welcome Robots into Daily Life?
With robots coming into our daily life, opinions differ on whether we should welcome them.
As for me, I’ll look on the positive side of this change and accept it rather than resist it. For one thing, robots free us from boring work. What impresses me most about them is their ongoing ability to work tirelessly. For another, if elderly people are feeling down or lonely, there is nothing better than having a robot keep them company. Some worry robots will take away our jobs, but history shows new technology creates more jobs than it removes. Nevertheless, it will take some years before robots understand human feelings. That is no reason to refuse them. Let’s welcome robots wisely.
反对 Should We Welcome Robots into Daily Life?
With robots coming into our daily life, opinions differ on whether we should welcome them.
Personally, I think we should be cautious rather than welcome them blindly. For one thing, relying too much on robots may cost us basic skills. What worries me most is their growing ability to take our jobs.
For another, robots can never offer real warmth. If we are feeling down or lonely, there is nothing better than seeing the smiling face of a good friend, which no machine can replace.
Admittedly, robots do bring us convenience. Nevertheless, it may take years before we can truly trust them with our safety.
In short, we should welcome robots with caution, not blindly.

第一节:(774)
Text 1(31)
M: Lily, your balcony looks like a farm. Are you growing tomatoes to save money?
W: Not really. The biology book has lots of theories, but I just wanted to learn by doing.(1)
Text 2 (40)
W: Dad, look at this new app on my smart watch. It says my heart rate is higher than normal.
M: Well, since it noticed something strange and you’re just sitting here, I bet it will soon book you a doctor’s visit.(2)
Text 3 (41)
M: Excuse me, I’ve got some plastic bottles. Do you know where I can recycle them?
W: Go past the school gate, all the way to the parking lot. Don’t go in — just turn right. There’s one right by the science building.(3)
Text 4(40)
W: Hey, how did the interview go? You look pretty calm.
M: Well, I smiled and kept my body language open, but she just sat there with her arms crossed, not reacting. She said she’d call me, but it’s hard to tell.(4)
Text 5(33)
M: Alice, what do you think of the new uniform policy?
W: I actually like it. It ends the morning rush of choosing what to wear, so I can just grab my bag and go.(5)
第二节:
Text 6(82)
M: Lisa, your school introduced that Smart AI assistant this semester, right? What do you find most useful about it?
W: Well, it won’t take our place. Sure, it does mark papers fast but the real value is that it finds out each student’s weak points and offers targeted exercises.(6) That used to take me hours.
M: Sounds efficient. Are they planning to push it further?
W: Yeah, from next week, all staff will get trained on how to use it better, not just buy new software.(7)
Text 7 (85)
M: The map shows two routes to the campsite. We can hike through the forest path, or take the paved road.(8) Which way should we go?
W: I’d prefer the forest path for the scenery, but look at the notes here. There’s a tiny warning sign— it says the stream on that path is flooded because of recent rains.
M: Ah, that’s why it’s marked as blocked.(9) Safety first. Let’s just take the paved one, even if it takes longer.(8)
W: Agreed. Let’s head back to the road entrance.
Text 8 (126)
W: Jack, you weren’t at the group discussion for the biology project yesterday(10)(11). What happened?
M: Oh, Sarah, I’m sorry. I didn’t skip it on purpose. I was heading to the library and my stomach suddenly hurt badly. I had to run to the clinic.(10)
W: Oh, that sounds awful! Are you OK now?
M: Much better. The doctor said it wasn’t anything serious — probably just something I ate. But I missed the whole discussion. What was it about?
W: Well, Professor Brown split us into smaller groups and gave each group a different part of the project.(11) But don’t worry. Let’s grab a coffee now and I’ll walk you through the specific steps for our part(11) (12)
M: That would be great. You’re a lifesaver, Sarah. Let me get my notebook.
Text 9 (136)
M: That talk on body language was really good, wasn’t it?
W: Yeah, I learned a lot. You know, I always thought eye contact was just polite, but the speaker said in some places direct gaze is honest, while in others, it feels rude.(13)
M: Right. And the bit about nodding really surprised me. I used to just nod to show I agreed. But the speaker said it’s more about encouraging the other person to keep going.(14)
W: That makes sense. To be honest, during my first week here, what I really had no idea about was the handshake.(15) I never knew how long or how firm to make it.
M: Exactly. So I guess the point is, once you realize people simply do things differently, you can stop worrying about getting it wrong.(16)
W: Absolutely. Just knowing that takes the pressure off.
Text 10 (160)
Good morning, everyone. For today’s “Science Spotlight”, I’d like to share my childhood memory with you. When I was your age, I went with my father to the Amazon rainforest. He was studying insects there, and I found a tiny purple flower that wasn’t in any of my books.(17) That changed my life. I decided to study plants not just to name them, but to protect the places where they grow. The natural environment is worsening at an alarming rate.(18) That trip made me curious about the natural world. Looking ahead, I don’t think we’ll spend our time in the forest. I predict future research will depend less on field trips and more on images from space and computers, helping us study plants without harming them.(19) The reason I’m telling you this today is simple: the world needs more young, passionate explorers. I hope my story can fire up your curiosity to look closer at the green world around you.(20)
