When we moved into the tall grey building, my mother said city people keep to themselves. “Close the door, and everyone lives in their own small world,” she said. The lift smelled of new paint, and our boxes were still everywhere. For three months, that seemed true: we rode the same lift with the man from 9B, and never said a word.
Then came the big storm. The lights went out at nine o’clock, and the whole building turned dark. Rain hit the windows like small stones, and the wind shouted at the balconies. Suddenly our doorbell rang — it was the man from 9B, holding a light in his hand. “The wind is blowing the rain onto your balcony,” he shouted. “Your clothes will fly away!”
We ran out and pulled the clothes in, wet and laughing. His wife appeared with two big towels and dried our heads like a grandmother. In the dark hallway, we sat down and talked — about the storm, the old building, and where to buy the best breakfast. We even forgot about the storm for a while.
After that night, everything changed. The man from 9B — his name is Mr. Qiu — helped my father repair our broken window. Mrs. Qiu showed my mother the quickest bus to the market, and my mother shared her special soup with them.
We began to do small things for each other, too. My father carries heavy boxes up for Mrs. Qiu, and I water their plants when they travel. When my mother was ill, Mrs. Qiu cooked dinner for us for three days. Now the short lift rides are full of long talks.
One evening, Mr. Qiu said, smiling, “A near neighbor is better than a far-away relative.” My mother agreed. She no longer believes that city people live in small worlds — our door, and the Qius’ door, are open more often than closed.

D.To fix the window.
24.What did the two families do after the storm?
A.They moved to another city.
B.They helped each other.
C.They stopped talking then.
D.They sold farm vegetables.
25.What does the story tell us?
A.A near neighbor helps more.
B.Storms bring good luck.
C.City people never change.
D.Old buildings are the best.
C
When you meet a new English word at midnight, who can help? For many students today, the answer is an AI study helper — a little window on the screen that never sleeps and never says “wait until tomorrow”.
These helpers are good at quick answers. They can explain a word in three different ways, read a sentence aloud, or turn a difficult sentence into easier words. Some can even make a short quiz to check if you understand. For a shy student, it is like a quiet helper at your side.
However, an AI helper cannot study for you. It can explain the word “brave”, but only you can decide when to use it. It can check your grammar, but it cannot put your own story into words. The difference between learning and copying lies exactly here.
There is also a danger: if you let the app do everything, your own skills stop growing. It is like riding a bike with training wheels — you feel safe, but you never learn to balance. Worst of all, you stop noticing your own progress, because the app carries you everywhere and you never really test yourself on paper before a test.
The smart way is to use AI as a checker, not a writer. Write first; then ask the app to find your mistakes and explain them. Little by little, the mistake list in your notebook gets shorter and shorter, and your own writing grows stronger with every page.
Remember: the app may be smart, but the learning belongs to you.
26.What can AI study helpers do, according to Paragraph 2?
A.They explain words.
B.They write stories for you.
C.They take tests for you.
D.They choose your books.
27.What can’t an AI helper do, according to the passage?
A.Check grammar.
B.Write your own story.
C.Read a sentence aloud.
D.Make a short quiz.
28.What does the underlined phrase “training wheels” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Wheels that help beginners.
B.Wheels for fast riders.
C.Old broken wheels.
D.Wheels of a train.
29.What is the smart way to use AI, according to Paragraph 5?
A.Let AI write everything.
B.Never use AI at all.
C.Write first, AI checks.
D.Ask AI to choose topics.
30.What is the best title for the passage?
A.AI Helpers: Use Them Wisely B.Where to Buy Cheap Apps
C.AI Will Replace All Teachers D.Say Goodbye to Old Dictionaries
D
Bought something online and want to change it? Don’t worry — most shops make returns easy, if you take these three steps.
First, find your order. Open the app, tap “My Orders”, and choose the item. You will need the order number — a line of numbers and letters like SD-2026-8849. The number is on your order page, right under the item name. Without it, the shop cannot start the process.
Second, describe the problem clearly and, if you can, add photos. A picture of the broken zipper or the wrong size saves a lot of questions and makes the process faster. One clear photo often says more than a long paragraph.
Third, choose your way: money back, or a new one. Most shops offer both. If you need a new size, the shop will send it right after they receive the old one; some even send the new one first. Pack the old item well so that it will not break on the way.
One final tip: keep the receipt and the box until everything is done. And remember the “seven-day rule” — in China, you can return most online goods within seven days for no reason at all. With these steps, a return is usually finished within a few days.
31.What do you need to start a return?
A.A photo.
B.The order number.
C.A new box.
D.A phone call.
32.Why should you add photos when describing the problem?
A.To make the process faster.
B.To get more free gifts.
C.To pay less money.
D.To win a lucky game.
33.What does the underlined phrase “money back” probably mean?
A.Getting your money returned.
B.Paying more money.
C.Borrowing money.
D.Saving money in a bank.
34.If you want a new size, what will the shop do?
A.Ask you to wait a month.
B.Send a new one soon.
C.Sell the old one to others.
D.Give you a photo first.
35.What is the “seven-day rule”?
A.Goods arrive in seven days.
B.Returns within seven days.
C.Shops close for seven days.
D.Photos must be kept seven days.
