The night market was loud and bright. I stopped in front of a small sugar-painting stall and did not move. An old man sat on a low stool, with a little pot of hot sugar beside him. The smell was sweet and a little burnt. I thought he would send me away if I watched too long.
He did not. He looked up, smiled, and put a thin bamboo stick into my hand. “Try,” he said. Then he began to pour the hot sugar onto the cold board. A golden line appeared at once, like a short road in the light. The line turned, stopped, and turned again, and a rabbit’s head began to show.
I copied him, but my hand shook. The rabbit’s ear went one way, and its tail went the other. It looked more like a small cloud than a rabbit. I felt my face grow hot and wanted to put the stick down. A boy behind me laughed once, then stopped when the old man shook his head.
The old man only laughed and lifted my messy rabbit with the stick. “The first one should make people laugh,” he said. “If it looks too perfect, no one believes you made it.” He blew on it twice, and the sugar grew hard enough to hold.
I walked away with the funny rabbit and a paper bag, and I held the bag with both hands so the thin sugar would not break on the busy night-market path. The market was still loud, but I was not afraid of the stall any more. Next time I pass, I will stop again — not only to watch, but to try a second animal, even if it comes out wrong.
21.What did the writer first think the old man would do?
A.Give him free tea.
B.Sell him a big rabbit.
C.Ask him to sit down.
D.Send him away.
22.What does the underlined word “pour” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Drink it all.
B.Let it fall out.
C.Put it in a bag.
D.Wash it with water.
23.Why did the writer’s face grow hot?
A.The rabbit looked wrong.
B.The pot was on fire.
C.The market was too dark.
D.The stick was too short.
24.What did the old man say about the first picture?
A.It must look perfect.
B.It must be very big.
C.It should make people laugh.
D.It should be thrown away.
25.What will the writer do next time?
A.Buy a paper bag only.
B.Walk past the stall.
C.Teach the old man.
D.Stop and try again.
C
Got a parcel that does not match the picture? A short, fair review can help the shop, and it can also help the next buyer. A long, angry page of words often helps no one, because the seller cannot find the real problem in all that noise and then the next buyer makes the same mistake.
First, write the order number and the day the box arrived. Then tell the facts: which button fails, or which color does not match the picture. If you only write “terrible” or “the worst shop”, the seller still does not know where to begin.
A useful review is specific. “The left earphone has no sound” is clearer than “the thing is bad”. One photo of the broken part can save ten questions. If you mix three different problems into one long line, the seller may only see the noise, not the real fault that you hoped they would fix today.
Write the result you want: a new one, your money back, or just a clear answer. Keep your words calm. You are asking for help, not trying to shout the shop down. A quiet, complete review is stronger than a page of angry words that nobody can use.
Most shops reply within a week if your review is clear and complete. A fair review is a tool, not a stone.
26.What should you write first in a review?
A.A joke about the shop.
B.The order number.
C.Your favorite color.
D.A long angry story.
27.Why is “terrible” not enough?
A.The words are too long.
B.It costs too much.
C.Shops cannot start the repair.
D.There is no photo.
28.What does the underlined word “specific” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Clear and detailed.
B.Loud and funny.
C.Short and empty.
D.New and expensive.
29.What can you ask the shop to do?
A.Close the whole store.
B.Change the weather now.
C.Write a long song.
D.Send a new one.
30.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Ways to Find Cheap New Phones B.How to Write a Useful Review
C.Ways to Win Every Big Fight D.Ways to Take Funny New Photos
D
A smart speaker can turn on the lights, play a song, or tell you the weather in one second. On a busy morning, the little box by the fruit bowl feels helpful — until you forget it is always listening.
It is good at alarms, shopping lists, and simple questions. You say “play the news”, and the voice answers. Some speakers can even read a short message out loud when your hands are wet and the phone is across the room.
However, the speaker is not a friend who can keep a secret. If you tell it your bank number or your door password, the words may stay in the cloud. That information is private, and it should stay with you. A joke is fine; a password is not. If you let every guest ask it anything they like when you are in the next room, you may hear your own address spoken back on another day.
Use it for music, clocks and weather. Do not let it hold money or keys. Turn it off when you talk about school grades or family plans. Keep the useful voice, but keep your secrets in your own head.
The box can hear you. You still decide what it is allowed to know. A speaker that helps you dress and play music in the morning should not also know the number on your bank card or the key to your door.
31.What can a smart speaker do well?
A.Set an alarm.
B.Make a big dinner.
C.Open your bank.
D.Take you to class.
32.What should you not tell the speaker?
A.The weather today.
B.A song you like.
C.Your door password.
D.The time of dinner.
33.What does the underlined word “private” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Easy to share.
B.Only for you.
C.Fun for guests.
D.Free for all.
34.What should you use the speaker for?
A.Tell it every secret.
B.Let guests ask anything.
C.Use it to pay bills.
D.Use it for music.
35.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Smart Speakers: Useful but Careful B.How to Buy a Cheap Phone
C.How to Cook with a Speaker D.Go Back to Paper Clocks

A.Clear and detailed.

B.Change the weather now.

Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】例文:
Dear Tom,
I am glad you want to visit a temple fair in China. The paths are noisy and bright, and the air is full of sweet food. One morning there will show you more than any book about how people start the new year.
You can eat tanghulu, hot dumplings and sweet rice cakes from the food street. You can watch the lion dance in the square, and you can also stop at a sugar-painting stall to see a golden animal grow on the board. If you like music, sit under the old tree and listen to the folk songs.
Wear a thick coat and keep your bag closed, because the paths get crowded after lunch. Do not stand too close to the fireworks. Come early if you want a map at the east door. I hope you will come in January and walk through the fair with us.
Yours,
Li Hua
