Last April, after I published an essay about poetry as part of National Poetry Month, an editor told me heˈd often thought that the world would be a better place if we had a poem delivered to our doorstep each morning instead of a newspaper. As a newspaperman, Iˈm not ready to discourage readership of each dayˈs edition, but maybe thereˈs something to be said for reading a newspaper and a poem each morning.
All of that has led to a small experiment. In an effort to keep a little poetry in my life long after National Poetry Month had passed, I resolved to read at least one poem a day after reading through the newspaper over breakfast. Thanks to two digital services that deliver poetry right to my email inbox, itˈs been an easy resolution to keep.
Many public radio listeners are familiar with The Writerˈs Almanac, a five-minute broadcast hosted by Garrison Keillor that airs on lots of stations around the country. Each dayˈs edition includes a handful of facts about literary anniversaries (周年纪念), along with a short poem that Keillor recites. Fans can also have the text of each episode emailed to them every day, along with a link to the broadcast version.
The Academy of American Poets has its own poem-day feature, called "Poem-a-Day". Launched during National Poetry Month in 2006, Poem-a-Day highlights new and previously unpublished poems by contemporary poets on weekdays and classic poems on weekends.
Since subscribing to both services last April, Iˈve enjoyed receiving poems each morning. Reading at least one poem a day has also been like an intellectual vitamin (维生素), giving me a brief taste of literature even on busy days. Last April, I wondered if I could remind myself to read a poem each morning. Now, deep in summer, I wonder if I could ever do without it.

A. By listening to radios and writing emails.

At first glance, the scientist Charles Darwin and the poet Emily Dickinson would seem to have little in common. In Natural Magic, literary scholar Renee Bergland seeks to convince the reader otherwise, interweaving the lives, work, and history of these two towering figures of the 19th century. In doing so, Bergland shows definitively that they shared deep sensibilities about the natural world. They were both keen observers in their own home gardens. For both, the “magic” of nature could be found in the physical and material rather than the supernatural. They found nature to be a place enchanted by its own mysteries, joys, and sorrows.
Taking the form of a joint biography(传记), Natural Magic alternates between Darwin and Dickinson over the course of 16 chapters, progressing simultaneously(同时地)in time. While Bergland offers comprehensive descriptions, building on the extensive work of other biographers and scholars, the bookˈs own magic shines in the conversation created between its subjectsˈ bodies of work. When viewed as part of a historical dialogue, Darwin and Dickinson amplify(阐发)each otherˈs work, revealing the science in her poetry and the poetry in his science.
Natural Magic further situates both writers in the history of science as it developed from “natural philosophy” into specialized disciplines throughout the 19th century. Bergland lays extensive groundwork for the social and cultural forces that shaped each thinker in a time when the sciences and arts were more closely connected.
Bergland herself displays moments of beauty in her writing, particularly in her vivid descriptions of the wonder of scientific discoveries in the 19th century. “Changing angles of sunlight, the unchanging stars, and... the bright colors of the great auroras lightened up the vastness of planetary space,” she writes, for example.
Ultimately, the book offers readers a historical and biographical look into the magic offered by the natural world as reflected in the works of two major 19th-century thinkers. Bergland concludes that in a time of climate crisis, we must recover this kind of dialogue across the sciences and the arts, emphasizing our shared sense of wonder in nature.
28.What does Bergland aim to demonstrate about Darwin and Dickinson?
A. Their inborn talents. B. Their great achievements.
C. Their literary background. D. Their unseen commonalities.

A. It creates dialogues between works.
B. It is a co-authored masterpiece.

A. Straightforward. B. Academic.

B. Nature should be treated with awe.
C. Wonder is the beginning of wisdom.
D. The dawn of science came too late.

Today, poetry and science are often considered to be mutually exclusive career paths. But that wasnˈt always the case. The mathematician Ada Lovelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were both accomplished poets. The poet John Keats was a licensed surgeon. Combining the two practices fell out of favor in the 1800s. But translating research into lyrics, haiku, and other poetic forms is resurging among scientists as they look for alternative ways to inspire others with their findings.
"Poetry is a great tool for questioning the world," says Sam Illingworth, a poet and a geoscientist who works at the University of Western Australia. Through workshops and a new science-poetry journal, called Consilience, Illingworth is helping scientists to translate their latest results into poems that can attract appreciation from those outside of their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazon, a scientist from the University of Helsinki in Finland, joined one of Illingworthˈs workshops. In the workshop, she was grouped with other scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17-syllable-long poem, which spotlighted water, a fluid that featured in all of the group membersˈ research projects. "It was a lot of fun, and surprisingly easy to write the poem," Mazon says. She plans to continue writing. "We do a disservice (伤害) to ourselves to think that scientists canˈt be artistic and that art canˈt be used to communicate scientific ideas," Mazon says.
That viewpoint is echoed by Illingworth, who thinks science communication initiatives are too often dominated by public lectures with their hands-off PowerPoint slides. "Actually, when science communication involves writing and sharing poems, it invites a two-way dialogue between experts and nonexperts," he says. Scientist-poet Manjula Silva, an educator at Imperial College London, agrees. Poetry provides a way to translate complex scientific concepts into a language that everyone can understand, Silva says.
Scientists and poets are both trying to understand the world and communicate that understanding with others. The distinction between scientists and poets is less than people might think. Weˈre all just people with hopefully really interesting things to say and to share.
32.What does the underlined word "exclusive" in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Alternative. B. Rare. C. Interactive. D. Separate.
33.What are Illingworthˈs workshops aimed at?
A. Popularizing a new science-poetry journal.
B. Inspiring outsiders to pursue their careers in science.
C. Encouraging science communication through poems.
D. Getting scientists to exchange ideas about the latest research.
34.Which of the following ideas may Silva agree with?
A. It is easier and more interesting to write poems.
B. Poetry helps simplify complicated scientific ideas.
C. Science shouldnˈt be taught in public lectures with PPT slides.
D. Poems are used to create dialogues between scientists and poets.
35.What is the purpose of the article?
A. To promote an idea. B. To offer suggestions.
C. To prove an assumption. D. To present conflicting views.
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
To Read Poetry like a Poet
A great poem can be there for you. It can help you process sadness, anger or fear. (36) . Franny Choi, an educator, says some poems make her "get out of my chair and shout it from the rooftops". Here are tips to help you meaningfully connect to a poem.
Donˈt approach poetry like itˈs schoolwork. The way to engage with a poem taught in school is by trying to understand it, master it and take an exam, which keeps us from developing personal relationships with poetry. (37) , due to no quiz at the end!
Donˈt worry about "getting it". People often pressure themselves to interpret a poem, or figure out what the poet conveyed. Donˈt do it, says Mullen, a poet and professor. (38) : What overall impression do you get? What ideas float around in mind? "Those overall impressions, I think most of us do get," says Mullen.
Read it out loud. "Poetry was an oral art form before anything else," says Choi. "And much information can be gained from reading poems loud." As an exercise, try reading a poem aloud in different ways: like tasting every word and every syllable; like explaining something tough to someone else. (39) .
(40) . A poem might offer visual imagery. If not, go ahead and fill them in with your imagination. "Think of the poem like a movie director," says Mullen. "What colours would you use? What kind of setting is there?" These brain pictures will illuminate whatever it is you seem to be getting out of the poem.
A.Visualise the poem
B.Read a bunch of poetry
C.So rest easy when reading a poem
D.Or make you feel happy or excited
E.Instead, ask about your opinion of the poem
F.Or better yet, head to your local poetry circle
G.It may help further your knowledge of the poem

The rain came down steady and hard. Jason Storie heard it but was not worried as he prepared for a day of caving with five friends in a remote spot 80 miles northwest of his home in Duncan, on Canada's Vancouver Island.
It was 6 a.m. on December 5, 2015. As a newcomer to the sport, Jason had gone caving only four times. This would be his toughest outing yet: a cave called Cascade. It was dangerous enough that the entrance was blocked by a locked metal door to keep the casual cavers out. About a mile long and 338 feet deep, Cascade was full of turns and barely passable tight squeezes.
Jason was new among the group, with the least experience and, at 43, older by a decade or more. It was his friend Andrew Munoz, 33, who introduced him to the sport. Unlike Jason, Andrew was an expert caver—a former caving guide, actually.
They hiked a bit before coming to the door, which sat in the ground—you'd miss it if you weren't looking for it. It was 10 a.m. With their way lighted by headlamps, they walked down a narrow passage studded with sharp rocks. The silence was broken by a drip-drip-drip from above. Soon the drip turned into a light but steady flow, and they were wading in water up to their ankles, then to their shins.
Two hours later, they approached one of the features that made the cave unique: a narrow passage not big enough to stand up in that led into a short, tight downhill. This passage had a name: the Narrow Crawl.. Four streams met here, and indeed, the water was flowing more quickly. The sound of the water had turned into a roar. When they finally neared the top of the Crawl, there were barely four inches of air left between the water and the ceiling. not enough for them to keep their heads up to breathe. They came to terrifying realization that they were in danger!

Learning that you are preparing for the Chinese classical poetry competition,I’m writing to offer some practical recommendations.
What counts most is not merely memorizing lines mechanically, but grasping the emotions and beautiful images hidden behind the poems. It is highly recommended that you listen to professional recitation recordings to feel the special rhythm.Besides,if you spare some time to look into the poets’ life stories and historical background, you will gain precious insight into what they intended to convey. You can also practice reciting aloud every day, which will help you sound more natural and confident on stage.
I sincerely hope these suggestions will be of great help to you.I firmly believe that with continuous efforts, you will stand out and have a wonderful performance.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写 (满分 25 分)
67. The water kept rising, and there was no hope of rescue. The hours passed. Jason and Andrew didn't dare to move for fear of slipping. They dozed off and then jerked themselves awake. Every once in a while, one of them turned on his headlamp to check the water level. An hour later, the water level went down enough that they could try an escape. Stiff from keeping in one position for 12 hours, they slowly unfolded their bodies. Jason screamed in pain, but he was determined not to let it stop him.
Slowly but steadily, the group made their way forward. Still, each time Jason moved a leg, he cried out. Over the next 90 minutes, they made their way toward the entrance, at times in chest-high water. Now, in a passage that was high enough for them to walk upright, Jason saw something flicker in the distance. "Lights! I see lights!" Jason shouted out. For the first time since entering the cave, over 20 hours earlier, Jason's emotions got the best of him and tears trickled down his cheeks.
