3D Paper Art Course
Paper may seem like a humble medium, but each sheet holds the potential to transform
into something fascinating, complex and three-dimensional(3D).In this digital era, paper art
and pop-ups can add an element of tactility()and human interaction to the written word.
In this course,we'll explore the many movements and dimensions you can create with pop-up
structures-within books, cards,or on their own. We'll learn to build and adjust basic paper
【高二英语第2页(共8页)】
engineering models, starting with simple one-sheet box pop-ups and working our way up to
layered 180-degree self-standing constructions.Templates()will be provided so everyone
can understand and explore a wide range of complexities, and examples of how mechanisms
are applied to published pop-up books will be shared throughout. At the end of the course,
we'll put all the pop-up models into a book.
This course includes four total sessions:
Session 1
Monday,7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Intro to paper engineering:
tools,templates,and 1-sheet pop-ups
Session 2
Tuesday,7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Building multi-piece pop-ups:
complex structures
Session 3
Wednesday,7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Adjusting your pop-ups:
adding variation
Creating a book:
Session 4
Thursday,7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

A school resource officer turned a failed summer field trip into an unforgettable memory
for over 140 poor middle school students in Phoenix.
When the funding for the end-of-summer movie trip fell through unexpectedly,
programme coordinator Katie Jenkins was at a loss. She turned to Officer Sean Reavie for
help.Without hesitation,Reavie paid out of his own pocket to rent a whole movie theatre for
144 seventh and eighth graders from Greenway Middle School's after-school programme. He
also covered snacks including popcorn, candies and drinks for the private screening of Toy
Story 5.For most kids, this was their very first time stepping into a movie theatre.
The whole rental cost less than $2,000,yet the experience meant far more to these
teenagers.Reavie said he would spare more money if needed, for he believed adults must
never break promises made to children.Greenway is a Title I school, where most students
come from financially disadvantaged families. Many have no private cars, and their parents
hold several low-paying jobs to make ends meet.Half of these kids have never visited a water
park, let alone travelled across the nearby highway.
Reavie has kept helping kids with his own money year after year.Last summer,he spent
over $3,000 taking students to a local water park.Inspired by children's fondness for
superheroes,he also founded a charity called Put On The Cape:A Foundation For Hope,
aiming to bring warmth to more troubled youngsters.
【高二英语第3页(共8页)】
Before the movie rolled,Reavie shared a heartfelt wish with all the kids:grow up and
pass on kindness to others as a return for what he had done.He expected nothing material in
return, hoping this single act of generosity would plant seeds of kindness that would bloom
(开花)for years to come.
24.Why did Jenkins ask Reavie for help?
A.She lacked money for the planned trip.
B.All cinema tickets were sold out.
C.The snacks prepared were far from enough.
D.Some students refused to watch movies.
25.Why did the author mention students'family backgrounds in Paragraph 3?
A.To explain the expenses a family covered for the trip.
B.To illustrate the backwardness of local education.
C.To highlight the great value of the experience for kids.
D.To praise Reavie for what he had done for the school.
26.Which of the following can best describe Reavie?
A.Patient and humorous.
B.Generous and warm-hearted.
C.Independent and reliable.
D.Modest and open-minded.
27.What was Reavie's expectation for the kids?
A.To treasure every moment in life.
B.To hold on to their dreams.
C.To seek personal material rewards.
D.To spread kindness to more people.

"Plop plop, fizz fizz,oh what a relief it is.You might have thought that only the pill
that is advertised creates relief. But science suggests it is the words of the advertisement that
actually produce it.Scientists call this mental assistance,Cognitive()Facilitation.
Professional writers and speakers use it all the time,as is seen in Shelley's poem:
And the sunlight clasps the earth
And the moonbeams kiss the sea:
What is all this sweet work worth
If thou (you)kiss not me?
The structure of the first sentence acts as a prime()which is repeated in the
second sentence, making its meaning better get across.Primes bring the flow of words into
people's minds. That gives you a straightforward means of writing or speaking that attracts
people.
Why do primes work?Readers and listeners are always asking,"What will this person
say next?"The habit of guessing what's next is universal. So when you place a prime early
on-a word or phrase or sentence structure you plan to reuse-people take notice. They
instantly and unknowingly place a bet,and if they're right,they get a pay-off in faster
language processing.
Many experiments confirm this advantage. One small study by Uta Noppeney asked 25
people to read blocks of text, some of which had repeating language structures;some did not.
People who read blocks with parallel()patterns finished sentences faster roughly by
0.1 seconds.
In another study,Sascha Topolinski at the University of Cologne had participants read
short jokes and rate their funniness. Some were unknowingly primed with a key word from
the punchline(),while others were not.Topolinski's readers rated jokes as funnier if the
primes were presented more than a minute beforehand. In Topolinski's mind, the primes
enabled the participants to catch the joke and to master the punchline.
Primes have their limits,of course. They can get boring. That's why experts say:
"Repeat and vary. But in everyday talk and text,an old structure conveying a new idea
prevents cognitive indigestion. Here's some more new wine in an old bottle:"Plop plop, fizz
fizz,oh how friendly a pattern is.

31.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Art of Communication
B.The Power of Primes

The appearance of predictive text in daily written communication has become a common
feature of modern life.It either saves time by automatically filling in words or causes
annoyance with irrelevant(不相关的)suggestions..The predictive-text function of large
language models (LLMs)is often considered analogous to the human brain's natural ability to
forecast upcoming words during daily conversation. It therefore leads to a meaningful
question:do human brains predict language in the exact same manner as artificial intelligence?
A latest study published in Nature Neuroscience offers a clear answer. It proves that
humans tend to consider broader linguistic structures, instead of merely focusing on the single
immediate word.LLMs are strictly optimized to predict the next word in a fixed and equal
pattern, while the human brain actively combines words into grammatical phrases and makes
logical predictions within complete language chunks().
The research team conducted systematic experiments on Mandarin speakers. They applied
MEG (to record real-time brain activity and adopted Cloze tests to evaluate
participants'linguistic prediction performance.Further analysis on English brain data was also
carried out to ensure the results could be applied across different languages.
The team also used LLMs to quantify the predictability of words based on both their
“entropy'”and“surprisal'”.High entropy indicates that the context doesn't strongly limit
following words, giving it less predictability.High surprisal indicates that the next word is
not well expected based on the context. For example, the phrase "I saw a"carries higher
entropy than“I sat on a”,since far more nouns can follow“saw”.
By comparing brain reactions and LLM prediction results, researchers discovered that
human brain activity varies with words'structural positions. On the contrary,LLMs lack
such structural awareness and only provide simple, fixed predictions.Overall, human beings
share basic word prediction ability with Al,but our brain's language judgement is deeply
shaped by grammatical structures. This fundamental difference perfectly explains why human
language processing is far more complex and flexible than current AI language models.
32.The underlined word "analogous"in Paragraph 1 probably means
A.Unrelated
B.similar
C.opposite
D.contradictory
33.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.Humans handle words and phrases faster.
B.LLMs are better at predicting rare words.
C.LLMs are able to make logical predictions.
D.Humans focus more on language structures.
34.How does the author organize Paragraph 4?
A.By describing an experiment and listing data.
B.By citing()a quote and providing explanations.
C.By defining two terms and giving examples.
D.By raising a question and offering answers.
【高二英语第5页(共8页)】
35.What enables humans to outperform LLMs in word prediction?
A.Vocabulary recognition stability.
B.Data analysis capacity.
C.Grammar structure completeness.
D.Word processing speed.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余
选项。
Want to improve your life but feel overwhelmed by big changes?Actually, small and
positive actions can make a significant difference.Lasting well-being is often built through
consistent,manageable choices.You don't need a huge transformation.36 Here are some
evidence-backed steps to get you started.
37 It can be about finding the delight in small, everyday moments, and deciding to
approach your day-to-day life with good humour.38 Researcher Tomisawa et al.(2025)
found that laughing helps to improve optimism, reduce pessimism, and relieve stress.Of
course, that doesn't mean that you should go around laughing at anything and everything.Be
aware of what's happening around you and recognise the moments or interactions that hold the
potential for amusement, and actively choose to lean into that.
Stand up for what you believe in,even when it feels uncomfortable.Whether it's
defending someone, challenging unkind behaviour,or simply expressing your viewpoint,
standing up for what matters to you strengthens your sense of identity and helps you to be an
active bystander.39 It's being willing to act even when you feel scared. Each time you
stand up for what you believe to be right, you're confirming that your voice matters and
deserves to be heard.
Actively seek out connection. Our relationships are foundational to happiness.Having
people around you to celebrate successes, laugh at mistakes,or share struggles nurtures deep
connection and improves our individual well-being.Research has found that having such
friendships predicted well-being and its components.40
In short, small actions repeated consistently create meaningful change. These suggested
steps all have the power to positively impact our everyday lives and help move us closer to the
life that we want.
A.A few intentional minor shifts will do.
B.Cherish daily progress.
C.So take time to develop supportive relationships.
D.Seek out fun and laughter in everyday things.
E.It builds up confidence and shapes how others see you.
F.It seems scary, but courage isn't the absence of fear.
G.The benefits of this joyful approach are well-documented.

Grandpa handed Toby a small whistle()carved out of thick animal bone. Its surface
was worn smooth by years of use."This is a winter whistle,"Grandpa explained."If you are
ever lost in the woods when it snows, blow this. The sound carries far across snow-covered
ground. We will hear you and come find you.
Toby slipped it deep inside his winter-coat pocket,"I'm 12,and I no longer need to call
for help!"To him, blowing the whistle would mean admitting he was not brave enough.
That weekend,Toby went snow-trekking(雪地徒步)in the nearby forest with his best
friend Jax.But an argument broke out between them over a silly game.Toby stormed off in
anger, leaving Jax behind. He told himself he did not need anyone's company. He would
explore deeper into the woods alone to prove how tough he was.
But the sun began to set.Grey clouds rolled in unexpectedly.A bitter winter wind
sprang up.Snow began to fall in thick, swirling flakes. The gentle afternoon snow quickly
turned into a snowstorm.Visibility dropped sharply.Toby could no longer tell which path led
back home.He was lost.
Cold bit through his gloves and his winter jacket. His cheeks and nose ached from the
bitter wind.Panic rose inside his chest. He pulled his hands out of his gloves and fumbled(
)inside his coat pocket. His fingers closed around the hard shape of Grandpa's whistle. It
was right there. But shame washed over him.He had run away after the fight. If he blew the
whistle,Grandpa and Jax would know he had acted stupidly. They would laugh at him for
getting lost.Pride held him back.He put the whistle back into his pocket and told himself he
could find the way home by himself.
He struggled forward through the heavy snow. The wind howled, blowing snow into his
eyes. The temperature kept dropping.Still, the whistle stayed safely hidden in his pocket. As
it was getting dark in the snowy woods,Toby felt close to passing out from the cold.He had
to hide behind a large pine tree for shelter.
