A Great Person in My Heart
The great person in my heart is Yuan Longping, the “Father of Hybrid Rice”, whose decades of research transformed agriculture.
He spent his whole life researching hybrid rice, which helped feed millions of people around the world. Despite his great achievements, he remained modest and hard-working. He once said his dream was to let everyone have enough to eat, and he kept pursuing it until his last day.
Yuan Longping plants far more than rice in my heart. His spirit encourages me to face difficulties bravely. I’ll learn from him and try my best to make contributions to our society in the future.

On Father’s Day, a package was delivered to Dad, with a label saying “the Craftsman’s Dream”. He thought it might be something simple — work gloves or a new hat. But when he opened it, he saw a tool kit from Miller’s Hardware, just like the one attracted his attention before. He was completely still for a moment, just staring at it surprisingly. Emma and I walked to him and said, “Happy Father’s Day”. “The girls saw how much you liked it,” Mom said in a warm voice. “So we got it for you.”
Dad was too moved to say a word when he heard this. “Why not open it and have a look, Dad?” I suggested excitedly. He opened the kit, looking at each carefully chosen tool with care, a thankful smile spreading on his face. When he held a shiny tool under the sunlight, I saw his face filled with pure joy. “Life can be hard,” he said softly, “but I have the most important thing — your love.” His heartfelt words felt like a warm and comforting hug. That’s when I knew we had given him a perfect Father’s Day.

A 16-year-old Granite Bay High student is spreading holiday cheer by helping make sure kids in the community don’t go without a present this Christmas. Livy Hickey, a devoted youth ambassador for Marine (海军) Toys for Tots (a charity program), is on a mission to make this holiday season brighter for children in need.
Her journey with the nonprofit started when she was in eighth grade after she saw an activity for the organization, which has been providing holiday joy to families since 1947. “I love Christmas, it’s my favorite time of year, and I just value it so much,” said Livy, reflecting on her love for the holiday season.
Livy’s effort didn’t go unnoticed. Matt Vidosh, the local project manager for Marine Toys for Tots, quickly recognized her ability. “She was so well-spoken and devoted. I honestly thought she was already a junior or senior in high school. Her maturity (成熟) was beyond her years,” Vidosh said. For Livy, the desire to give back has deep roots. “My grandpa was a Marine, so I wanted to honor his legacy (遗产). That’s really what inspired me to get involved,” she explained.
She threw herself into the mission by buying toys, sorting them in the warehouse, and personally handing them out to families in need. Her devotion paid off when she was selected as one of just 35 student ambassadors nationwide for the program.
In 2024, the local Toys for Tots collected over 28,000 toys, reaching more than 12,000 kids. The program relies on the generosity of people like Livy, and they’re always looking for donations of new, unwrapped toys. “We’re always accepting new, unwrapped toys, and if you’re someone who loves to make toys at home, we’ll take those too. Every little bit helps,” Vidosh added.
For Livy, the true reward comes when the kids open their gifts. “Seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces is priceless. It lights up their entire face. Honestly, it makes my day and my whole year,” she said.
24. What impressed Matt Vidosh most about Livy Hickey initially?
A. Her exceptional qualities. B. Her academic achievements.
C. Her skills in collecting toys. D. Her love for traditional culture.
25. Why did Livy Hickey join Marine Toys for Tots?
A. She wanted to gain volunteer experience. B. Her grandfather’s background touched her.
C. She desired to share her favorite holiday joy. D. The project manager personally invited her.
26. What can we know from Livy’s words in the last paragraph?
A. The joy of helping others is lasting. B. She hopes to receive valuable rewards.
C. The program helps kids build confidence. D. She expects more teens to join the program.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Donate Toys to Children B. Marine Toys for Tots: A Care Program

Albert Einstein owed his brilliant mind to having a child-like sense of humour. Indeed, a number of studies have found a relationship between humour and intelligence. Researchers in Austria recently discovered that funny people, particularly those who enjoy dark humour, have higher IQs than their less funny fellows. They argue that it takes both cognitive (认知的) and emotional ability to process and produce humour.
In psychology we use the term “positive humour style” to refer to people who use humour to improve relationships. This type of humour is connected with relationship satisfaction, extroversion (外向性) and high self-respect. Having a humorous outlook on life is also a good strategy. It helps people better manage stress and challenges.
Not only do funny people make other people laugh, they also laugh more themselves. And laughter leads to brain changes, which may explain the link between humour and intelligence. Neuropsychological studies have found that experiencing positive emotional states, such as joy, fun and happiness, increases the production of dopamine (多巴胺) in the brain. Dopamine not only makes us feel great, but also opens up the learning centres of the brain. As a result, we become more flexible and creative in our thinking.
Evidence (证据) suggests that humour actually bolsters feelings of confidence, competence and status, making funny people very influential. Humour gets people to listen, helps communicate messages and benefits learning. It is a powerful tool that many successful leaders use to strengthen group work and organizational culture.
Research on the use of humour in education also supports the concept that humour is an effective aid to learning. Several studies have showed that lessons that are delivered with humour are more enjoyable for students, and also improve students’ understanding and recall of the topic.
28. What can we learn from the researchers in Austria?
A. Less funny people are tough. B. People enjoy dark humour most.
C. Funny people are always emotional. D. Humorous people have a smarter mind.
29. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 3?
A. The example of positive states. B. The reason why our brain changes.
C. The way to be creative in thinking. D. The relation between humour and intelligence.
30. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “bolsters” in paragraph 4?
A. Mixes. B. Increases. C. Explains. D. Damages.
31. What can be concluded from the research in education?
A. Humorous students are skilled at remembering things.
B. Students can understand humour better in class.
C. Humorous classes are more effective for learning.
D. Effective learning depends on students’ humour levels.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that most adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity (中等强度) physical activity each week, while you don’t need to exercise every day to be healthy. Exercising at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense activity at the weekend seems to have similar health benefits as spreading it out throughout the week.
To investigate whether it makes a difference when people exercise, Zhi-Hao Li at Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, and his teammates analyzed data in the UK Biobank study on the physical activity of more than 93,000 people, aged between 37 and 73. This was recorded by wrist accelerometers (加速度计), worn between 2013 and 2015. Most previous studies have relied on surveys, which can be unreliable.
Over eight years of follow-up, nearly 4,000 of the participants died. The researchers found that among people who did at least 150 minutes of weekly physical activity but packed it into one or two days, the risk of death from all causes was 32 percent lower than it was for people who didn’t manage this level of exercise. The risk of death from heart disease was 31 percent lower, and from cancer was 21 percent lower.
This might make it seem that exercising at the weekend is better than spreading out your physical activity, but there was no statistically significant difference in the risk of death between the “weekend warriors”, who fit their weekly physical activity into just one or two days, and those who were active more regularly. “This study adds to what we know about the ‘right’ way to be active. That is, there is no single ‘right’ way,” says I-Min Lee at Harvard Medical School. “Whether one is regularly active, or whether one bunches activity over only one to two days a week, it is equally beneficial.”
All the participants lived in the UK and about 97 percent were white, so the researchers write that additional studies that include a wider range of ethnicities (民族) are required to make them more applicable to general populations.
32. Why did the researchers analyze data from the UK Biobank?
A. To gain plenty of samples. B. To make the result more reliable.
C. To follow up participants easily. D. To compare it with previous surveys.
33. What did Zhi-Hao Li and his team find?
A. Daily exercise is a must for good health.
B. Weekend warriors face higher death risks.
C. Spreading out exercise is better than weekend exercise.
D. Weekend exercise and daily workouts are equally beneficial.
34. Which of the following may I-Min Lee agree with?
A. Skip weekday exercise completely. B. Choose moderate activities as priority.
C. Pick an exercise pattern that suits you. D. Get in a fixed amount of workout at weekends.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on about the study?
A. Its future direction for improvement. B. Its possible fields of application.
C. Its limitation on research methods. D. Its far-reaching significance.

Some people seem to have a naturally higher baseline for happiness — one large-scale study of more than 2,000 twins suggested that around 50% of overall life satisfaction was due to genetics (遗传学), 10% to external events, and 40% to individual activities. So while you might not be able to control what your “base level” of happiness is, there are things that you can do to make your life happier and more fulfilling. 36
Get Regular Exercise.
Exercise is good for both your body and mind. Physical activity is linked to a range of physical and psychological benefits including improved mood. Find a Sense of Purpose.
Research has found that people who feel like they have a purpose have better well-being and feel more fulfilled. A sense of purpose involves seeing your life as having goals, direction, and meaning. 40 Some things you can do to help find a sense of purpose include: exploring your interests and passions, working to address injustices, looking for new things you might want to learn more about.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。
On a spring evening, my parents, my younger sister Emma, and I stopped outside Miller’s Hardware store (五金店) on our way back home.
Among useful gardening things and handy tools was a great professional tool kit, shining under the soft store lights. Dad’s eyes stayed on it. “Wow,” he said quietly, “look at that.” He then looked down at his own old tool kit, which he had used for years. Dad usually wore simple blue overalls (工装裤) and strong boots, repairing things around the house, fixing fences, or working in the garage. He had only one or two nice shirts for special days, and almost all his clothes were plain and long-lasting.
“What a fancy kit,” he said, shaking his head. “Who would ever want something like that?” Still, as we walked on, he turned back for one last look. “All those tools are beautiful, but maybe they should display something more useful.”
As Father’s Day came near, it seemed that the tool kit was soon forgotten. Dad, being very practical, never spent money on costly things. “We have more important things to buy,” he often said. Choosing a gift for him was hard. Whenever we asked, he would only ask for simple things — new gloves, or maybe socks.
On our last trip to town before Father’s Day, as Mom drove down Oak Street, Dad suddenly said, “Look!” He pointed toward Miller’s Hardware as we passed. “That tool kit — it’s gone,” he said, sounding surprised. Shaking his head, he added, “Who would pay so much for a set of tools?” But I could hear a bit of wanting in his voice. Not seeing it there made him feel something lost and regretful.
