His teacher, Ms Wang, noticed his 27 and decided to help him. She had read about memory techniques and wanted to share 28 with her student.
Ms Wang told Li Ming about the memory palace technique. "If you 29 this method, your memory will improve greatly," she said. The memory palace is a method that has been used for thousands of years. You imagine a 30 place, like your house, and then put the things you want to remember in different 31 of that place. The key is to create 32 mental images that connect the information to the locations.
Li Ming was sceptical at first. However, he 33 to try it. He imagined walking through his apartment. At the door, he placed the word "abandon"—he imagined a baby left at the door. In the living room, he put "brilliant"—a bright lamp shining on the sofa. In the kitchen, he placed "courage"—a lion sitting by the stove. Each image was vivid and unusual, which made it easier for his brain to remember.
To his surprise, when Li Ming walked through his memory palace the next day, he could remember all 30 words perfectly. He continued to 34 this technique for a month. His English test score rose from 65 to 92.
"If I don't use this method, I will 35 be struggling with vocabulary," Li Ming said with a smile. "Unless you try something new, you will never know what works for you."

Have you ever stayed up late studying, only to forget everything the next day? You are not alone. Scientists have discovered that sleep plays a key role in how our brains save memories. Without enough rest, your brain simply cannot store new information properly.
When you learn something new, your brain first keeps it in a temporary(暂时的) area. Think of it like a notepad(记事本)—it can only hold a little information at a time. If you want to remember it for a long time, your brain must move it to a "hard drive" for permanent(永久的) storage. This process mainly happens while you sleep.
During deep sleep, your brain replays the day's events and strengthens the connections between brain cells(脑细胞). The more strongly these connections are built, the easier it is to recall(回忆) the memory later. That is why a good night's sleep can help you remember facts better than hours of last-minute cramming(临时死记硬背).
A 2025 study followed 200 high school students over three months. Half of them were asked to get at least eight hours of sleep each night, while the other half followed their usual sleep habits. The results were clear: the well-rested group scored 25% higher on memory tests and reported feeling less stressed during exams.
However, many students believe that sacrificing(牺牲) sleep for extra study time is a good idea. In fact, this habit does more harm than good. If you don't get enough sleep, your brain cannot move information into long-term storage. As a result, everything you studied may simply disappear from your mind by morning.
So what should you do? First, try to go to bed at the same time every night. Second, avoid using your phone for at least an hour before bedtime—the blue light from screens can disrupt(扰乱) your sleep cycle. Finally, if you feel tired during the day, a short 20-minute nap(小睡) can help refresh your brain. Remember: studying smart is better than studying long. If you take care of your sleep, your memory will take care of the rest.
41. What happens to new information if you don\'t get enough sleep?
A. It moves to permanent storage immediately.
B. It stays in a temporary area and may be lost.
C. It becomes stronger and easier to recall.
D. It is stored in the brain\'s "hard drive".
42. What does the underlined word "recall" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Forget.
B. Remember.
C. Write.
D. Learn.
43. How much higher did the well-rested group score on memory tests?
A. 15%.
B. 20%.
C. 25%.
D. 30%.
44. What does the writer say about staying up late to study?
A. It is a good way to improve grades.
B. It does more harm than good.
C. It helps the brain store information.
D. It is better than sleeping early.
45. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Phones should be used more often before bedtime.
B. Naps are useless for refreshing the brain.
C. Getting enough sleep helps both memory and stress.
D. Studying long hours is always the best way to learn.

Do you sometimes walk into a room and forget why you went there? Or perhaps you can no longer remember your best friend's phone number? If so, you are not alone. Researchers are increasingly concerned about a phenomenon they call "digital amnesia"—the loss of memory caused by our reliance on smartphones and other digital devices.
A study by Singapore Management University found that frequently checking your phone fragments your attention and makes it harder for your brain to consolidate memories. Every time you unlock your phone to check a notification, your brain has to switch tasks. This constant switching reduces your ability to concentrate deeply and weakens your memory over time. The study revealed a worrying statistic: if a person unlocks their phone more than 110 times a day, they are at "high risk" of digital addiction and memory problems.
Another problem is that we are outsourcing our memory to our devices. Instead of memorising phone numbers, addresses, or birthdays, we store them in our phones. If you always rely on your phone to remember things, your brain gets less practice, and your memory muscles, so to speak, become weaker. Neuroscientist Michel Tardieu compares this to a vicious cycle: "Using the phone activates the same brain circuits as addictive drugs. Each notification triggers dopamine, creating a cycle of dependence that worsens the problem."
However, there are steps you can take to protect your memory. Unless you set limits on your phone use, digital amnesia will continue to get worse. Experts suggest practising "cognitive hygiene"—training your memory five or six times a day without using your phone. For example, try to remember a phone number or an address before looking it up. If you turn off unnecessary notifications and put your phone away during meals and before bedtime, you will give your brain the quiet time it needs to process and store memories.
Remember: if you don't use your memory, you will lose it. But if you exercise it regularly, your memory can remain strong throughout your life.
46. What is "digital amnesia" according to the passage?
A. A disease that destroys brain cells. B. Memory loss caused by relying on digital devices.
C. Forgetting to bring your phone. D. A type of smartphone brand.
47. What does the word "fragments" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Improves. B. Breaks into pieces. C. Protects. D. Collects together.
48. Why does the author mention "110 times" in Paragraph 2?
A. To show how popular smartphones are. B. To suggest people should use phones more.
C. To give a warning level for digital addiction. D. To compare different phone brands.
49. What does Michel Tardieu compare smartphone use to?
A. Physical exercise. B. Reading books. C. Addictive drugs. D. Healthy eating.
50. What is the main message of the passage?
A. Smartphones are completely bad for us. B. We should stop using all digital devices.
C. We need to use our memory actively to keep it strong. D. Digital amnesia cannot be prevented.
The human brain is an amazing organ(器官). It can store a huge amount of information—from the name of your first teacher to the taste of your favourite food. 51
Scientists have discovered that the brain does not store memories like a computer stores files. Instead, memories are formed through connections between neurons. If you learn something new, your brain creates new connections. 52
This is why repetition is so important for learning. If you review information regularly, the connections become stronger. 53 The hippocampus, a seahorse-shaped structure deep in the brain, plays a key role in this process. It acts like a bridge, moving new memories from short-term storage to long-term storage.
54 During sleep, the brain replays the day's experiences and strengthens the neural connections. If you don't get enough sleep, this process is disrupted and memories may be lost.
So, if you want to remember things better, here are some tips: review new information within 24 hours, connect new knowledge to things you already know, and make sure you get enough sleep every night. 55
A. But how exactly does this incredible process work?
B. If you don't review, these connections will weaken over time.
C. Without good sleep, even the best memory techniques will not work well.
D. Sleep is another crucial factor in memory formation.
E. However, some memories are stronger than others.
F. The stronger the connections, the easier it is to recall the memory.
(56)___________ Tom often forgets people's names right after meeting them.
(57)___________ Linda wants to memorise a list of 20 English words for tomorrow's test.
(58)___________ David can't remember the order of planets in the solar system.
(59)___________ Jane needs to prepare for a history exam with many dates and events.
(60)___________ Mike finds it hard to concentrate because his phone keeps sending notifications.
A. Try the memory palace technique—imagine a familiar place and put each person's name at a specific location. If you walk through this palace in your mind, you will remember all the names.
B. Use spaced repetition—review the words after 1 hour, then 2 hours, then 3 hours. If you follow this schedule, you will remember them much longer.
C. Create a mnemonic sentence—use the first letter of each planet to make a funny sentence. For example, "My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Noodles" stands for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
D. Draw a mind map—put the main topic in the centre and connect related events to it. If you use different colours for different time periods, it will be easier to remember.
E. Turn off notifications—unless you reduce distractions, you will not be able to focus. If you put your phone in another room while studying, your concentration will improve.
F. Take more notes—write down everything the teacher says. If you write more, you will remember more.

A项few为原级;C项fewest为最高级;D项the fewest为最高级形式。
what it has learned意为"它已经学过的内容",用现在完成时表示白天学过的内容对当前(深度睡眠处理阶段)有影响。
A项can表能力;B项may表许可或可能;C项must表强制命令(语气过强)。 考点:情态动词should(唯一)。故选D。
A项Therefore表因果"因此";C项Moreover表递进"此外";D项Otherwise表条件"否则"。考点:逻辑连词However(唯一)。故选B。
考点:介词before(唯一)。故选D。
find it + adj. + to do sth. 考点:形式宾语it(唯一)。故选C。
not...but... A项and表并列(无转折);C项or表选择"或者";D项so表因果。考点:连词not...but(唯一)。故选B。
此处为第一个the(The better you sleep),第二个the在句末more effectively前。A项a和B项an用于泛指单数;D项/零冠词不符合此固定搭配。

Li Ming, a 14-year-old student from Shanghai, always had trouble remembering English vocabulary. He would study hard the night before a test, but by the next morning, he had 26 most of the words.

A项remembered(记住)与but转折矛盾;C项kept(保持)不符合遗忘语境;D项learned(学习)与句意重复。
B项success(成功)与前文困难矛盾;C项progress(进步)与语境不符,他并未取得进步;D项habit(习惯)不是老师需要帮助解决的问题。 故选A。
share sth. with sb.
If you use this method, your memory will improve greatly",主句your memory will improve用一般将来时,if从句you use用一般现在时。B项will use为将来时,违反主将从现;C项used为过去时,时态不匹配;D项are using为现在进行时,不符合条件句用法。故选A。
A项strange(陌生的)与记忆宫殿法原则相反——陌生地点不易联想;C项dangerous(危险的)与记忆技巧无关;D项boring(无聊的)不描述地点的熟悉程度。
句意为"将想记住的东西放在那个地方的不同房间(位置)里",后文举例中at the door、in the living room、in the kitchen都对应不同房间/区域。B项doors(门)、C项windows(窗)、D项walls(墙)都过于具体,无法涵盖living room和kitchen。 故选A。
Each image was vivid and unusual",关键词vivid再次出现,与本题形成前后呼应。 A项dull(乏味的)与记忆效果相反;C项dark(暗的)不利于联想;D项vague(模糊的)与记忆需求矛盾。故选B。
A项refused(拒绝)与However转折和后文try it矛盾;B项hated(讨厌)不符合try it的语境;D项failed(失败)与后文实际尝试不符。
故选A。
If I don't use this method"表示假设不使用该方法,那么"仍然"会在词汇方面挣扎——说明没有改善之前的状态。

C

【答案】51 E 52. B 53. F 54. D 55. C
This is why repetition is so important",形成因果衔接:不复习→连接减弱→所以复习很重要。
During sleep, the brain replays"完美衔接。
(56) Tom often forgets people's names right after meeting them.
(57) Linda wants to memorise a list of 20 English words for tomorrow's test.
(58) David can't remember the order of planets in the solar system.
(59) Jane needs to prepare for a history exam with many dates and events.
(60) Mike finds it hard to concentrate because his phone keeps sending notifications.
A 57. B 58. C 59 D 60. E

Memory is like a (61)m________ that needs regular exercise. If you don't use your memory, it will become weaker over time. One of the best ways to (62)i________ your memory is through regular practice. For example, if you try to remember new words every day, your brain will form stronger (63)c________ between neurons. Another important factor is sleep. Unless you get (64)e________ sleep, your brain won't be able to move information from short-term to long-term memory. Finally, if you want to remember something well, you should (65)r________ it within 24 hours of learning it.
61. muscle 62. improve 63. connections 64 enough 65. review
circuits不如connections直接;cells不符合between neurons。填connections。
首字母e及语境"Unless you get ___ sleep"中,unless = if...not,即"如果没有充足的睡眠",enough(充足的)最恰当,enough sleep表示"充足的睡眠"。
If you want to remember things better, there are several strategies you can try. First, the memory palace technique is one of ___66___ (old) memory methods in the world. It works by linking information to familiar locations. If you imagine ___67___ (walk) through your house and placing items in different rooms, you will find ___68___ much easier to recall them later.
Second, spaced repetition is a ___69___ (power )tool for learning. Instead ___70___ studying everything at once, you review the material at increasing intervals. If you review a word after one day, three days, and seven days, you will remember it for a very long time.
Finally, sleep plays ___71__ important role in memory. If you don't get enough sleep, your brain will not be able to store new information ___72___ (proper). Research ___73___ (show) that deep sleep is the time when memories ___74___ (move) from short-term to long-term storage. Therefore, unless you take care of your sleep habits, even the best memory techniques ___75___ (will not) help you much.
66. the oldest 67. walking 68. it 69. powerful 70. of 71. an 72 properly 73. shows 74. are moved 75. won't
one of the + 最高级 + 可数名词复数"是固定结构,old的最高级为the oldest,故填the oldest。
此处imagine walking through your house表示"想象走过你的房子",walking为walk的动名词形式。故填walking。
find it + adj. + to do sth. 为宾语补足语,to do sth. 此处find it much easier to recall them later中it代替to recall them later。
Instead of studying everything at once"表示"不是一次学完所有内容(而是分次复习)",of后接动名词studying。instead of与rather than含义相似,但instead of是介词短语后接名词/动名词,rather than是连词后接动词原形。
故填an。
故填shows。
memories(记忆)与move(转移)之间为被动关系——记忆被转移,而非主动转移,故用被动语态。
unless = if...not,引导否定条件从句。此处unless you take care of your sleep habits为从句(一般现在时),主句需用一般将来时。won't help = will not help,表示"将不会有什么帮助"。
If you review English words every day, you will remember them.
If you review English words every day;"你就会记住它们"为主句,用一般将来时you will remember them。注意:them指代English words,不能用it。
You will be late unless you get up early.
unless = if...not,中文"除非你早点起床"转为肯定条件从句unless you get up early,"否则你会迟到"为主句You will be late。 If you don't get up early, you will be late。
If you don't pay attention to your health, your memory will get worse.
中文"如果你不注意健康"为条件从句,主语you,否定用don't pay attention to your health;"你的记忆力会变差"为主句,用一般将来时your memory will get worse。
The old man lost his memory after the accident.
主语是the old man(第三人称单数男性),故用his代替one's,完整翻译为The old man lost his memory after the accident。
Unless we protect our brain, our memory will decline.
中文"除非我们保护大脑"转为unless we protect our brain,从句用一般现在时肯定形式protect;"记忆力将会下降"为主句,用our memory will decline。 unless = if we don't protect our brain。

Dear Tom,
I'm sorry to hear that your memory has been getting worse recently. Don't worry—this is a common problem, and there are ways to improve it.
First, if you get enough sleep every night, your brain will have time to store memories properly. Second, unless you reduce the time you spend on your phone, you will keep getting distracted. Try turning off notifications while studying. Third, if you use memory techniques like the memory palace or spaced repetition, you will remember things much more easily. For example, if you review new information within 24 hours, you won't forget it quickly.
I hope these tips will help you. If you follow them, your memory will certainly improve!
Yours,
Li Hua

Dear Tom,
I'm sorry to hear that your memory has been getting worse recently.
Yours,
Li Hua
