The person who set the course of my life was a school teacher named Marjorie Hurd. When I stepped off a ship in New York Harbor in 1949, I was a nine-year-old war refugee, who had lost his mother and was coming to live with the father he did not know. My mother, Eleni Gatzoyiannis, had been imprisoned and shot for sending my sisters and me to freedom.
I was thirteen years old when I entered Chandler Junior High. Shortly after I arrived, I was told to select a hobby to pursue during “club hours.” The idea of hobbies and clubs made no sense to my immigrant ears, but I decided to follow the prettiest girl in my class. She led me into the presence of Miss Hurd, the school newspaper adviser and English teacher.
A tough woman with salt-and-pepper hair and determined eyes, Miss Hurd had no patience with lazybones. She drilled us in grammar, assigned stories for us to read and discuss, and eventually taught us how to put out a newspaper. Her introduction to the literary wealth of Greece gave me a new perspective on my war-torn homeland, making me proud of my origins. Her efforts inspired me to understand the logic and structure of the English language. Owing to her inspiration, in the twenty-five years that followed, I worked as a professional journalist.
Miss Hurd retired at the age of 62. By then, she had taught for a total of 41 years. Even after her retirement, she continually made a project of unwilling students in whom she spied a spark of potential. The students were mainly from the most troubled homes, yet she alternately bullied and charmed them with her own special brand of tough love, until the spark caught fire.
Miss Hurd was the one who directed my grief and pain into writing. But for Miss Hurd, I wouldn’t have become a reporter. She was the catalyst that sent me into journalism and indirectly caused all the good things that came after.
4. Which of the following caused the author to think of his homeland differently?
A. Following the prettiest girl in his class.
B. Knowing his mother’s miserable death.
C. Being exposed to Greek literary works.
D. Stepping on the American soil for the first time.
5. Which words best describe Miss Hurd as a teacher?
A. Strict but inspiring. B. Tough but indifferent.
C. Impatient but caring. D. Serious but approachable.
6. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. The students Miss Hurd taught were all finally fired.
B. Miss Hurd’s contribution was recognized across the nation.
C. Miss Hurd employed a unique way to handle these students.
D. Students from troubled homes preferred Miss Hurd’s teaching style.
7. Why does the author call Miss Hurd a “catalyst”?
A. To stress her role in starting his writing career.
B. To suggest she changed his personality completely.
C. To indicate she was the only person who helped him.
D. To show she was as powerful as a chemical substance.
C 5. A 6. C 7. A

C
Human well-being depends on the ability to navigate the social world. Such social skill depends on reliable feedback: acts of kindness may be met with gratitude; on other occasions, a misstep brings about a friend’s disapproval and recognition that an apology is needed. These moments are crucial for deepening trust and personal growth. Social life is rarely frictionless, because people are not perfectly in tune with one another. Yet it is precisely through such social friction that relationships deepen and moral understanding develops.
Sycophancy (谄媚) is the opposite of this friction. Many users experience this when AI enthusiastically agrees with their ideas or writing. In academic contexts, the consequence may be investing more time in an average idea. But as AI systems are increasingly consulted for guidance about relationships and conflicts, affirmation (肯定) of this kind may shape how people interpret their own actions and their perspectives of others, and in turn, how they respond to conflict and whether they take responsibility when things go wrong.
Now imagine a world where people routinely consult a sycophantic AI about interpersonal conflicts or moral dilemmas. They are repeatedly assured that they are right, that others are wrong, and that no apology is needed. Over time, this patterned sycophancy may reshape expectations about what feedback should feel like. Individuals may begin to anticipate the same constant affirmation from real human beings. The cumulative effect is a reduction in tolerance for the very social friction through which accountability, perspective-taking, and growth occur.
An AI companion that is always “on your side” may keep users engaged and dependent. But it cannot teach them how to handle real relationships — how to disagree respectfully, repair damaged trust, or accept being wrong. Although AI could be improved to promote long-term personal development, such goals conflict with systems built to maximize user engagement. Challenging users or presenting uncomfortable truths is a sure way to drive them away. This tension raises fundamental ethical questions: Should we prioritize immediate emotional comfort or long-term social health? Who gets to decide? Addressing these challenges will require interdisciplinary collaboration among computer scientists, social scientists, ethicists, and policy makers.
8. What role does social friction play in relationships according to the author?
A. It generates positive feedback.
B. It guarantees harmonious relationships.
C. It causes open disapproval or conflicts.
D. It enhances social bonds and moral growth.
9. Which of the following is NOT a consequence of sycophantic AI?
A. Misguided judgment about one’s actions.
B. Reduced tolerance for interpersonal friction.
C. Weakened willingness to take responsibility.
D. Increased ability to resolve real-life conflicts.
10. What prevents AI systems from being improved to challenge users?
A. Lack of technical capacity. B. Conflicts with commercial interests.
C. Unawareness of its potential harm. D. Absence of interdisciplinary collaboration.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward current AI systems?
A. Strictly neutral. B. Strongly opposed.
C. Cautiously concerned. D. Mildly supportive.
D 9. D 10. B 11. C
根据第一段“Yet it is precisely through such social friction that relationships deepen and moral understanding develops. (然而,正是通过这种社会摩擦,关系才能加深,对道德的理解才能发展。)”可知,作者认为社会摩擦能够加深人际关系并促进对道德的理解更深刻。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“But as AI systems are increasingly consulted for guidance about relationships and conflicts, affirmation (肯定) of this kind may shape how people interpret their own actions and their perspectives of others, and in turn, how they respond to conflict and whether they take responsibility when things go wrong. (但随着人工智能系统被越来越多地用于人际关系和冲突方面的咨询,这种肯定可能会影响人们如何解读自己的行为和他人的观点,进而影响他们如何应对冲突以及在事情出错时是否承担责任。)”可知,谄媚式AI会导致人们对自己的行为判断失误(选项A)和承担责任意愿减弱(选项C);根据第三段最后一句“The cumulative effect is a reduction in tolerance for the very social friction through which accountability, perspective-taking, and growth occur. (累积效应是对社会摩擦的容忍度降低,而正是通过这种社会摩擦,责任感、换位思考和个人成长才得以发生。)”可知,对人际摩擦容忍度降低(选项B)也是后果之一。“解决现实生活冲突能力的提升”文章没有提及。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Although AI could be improved to promote long-term personal development, such goals conflict with systems built to maximize user engagement. Challenging users or presenting uncomfortable truths is a sure way to drive them away.
D
Partying the night before a big exam. Preparing at the last minute for a work presentation. Running 5km in a heavy Halloween costume. All are examples of what psychologists call “self-handicapping” — creating obstacles to success to protect one’ s reputation. “Much previous research has explained it as a matter of personality,” said Yang Xiang, a psychology researcher.
Xiang and her co-authors have designed a mathematical model of how the phenomenon works socially. Their theory suggests people often judge someone’s competence from only one or two performances. So, if a person expects to be judged, creating an obstacle can give failure another explanation. In this way, self-handicapping is an attempt to game those judgments. “You’re doing this because it works,” Xiang said.
To test the theory, the researchers created a quiz-show experiment in which participants could choose how their performance would be judged. 20 questions were provided, and 8 correct answers meant a pass. Some chose to be judged on all 20 questions, while others on a randomly selected set of 10. Choosing the randomly selected set created uncertainty and offered a possible excuse for failure, making it a form of self-handicapping.
As the model confirmed, the behavior occurred most frequently among those least likely to fail — or to succeed. When self-handicappers succeeded, judges rated them especially highly. The behavior also softened judgments of those who failed. However, this protection weakened when the strategy was seen through, suggesting it worked best when judges were less aware of it.
Previous studies show self-handicapping can weaken educational goals. It has been linked with lower self-esteem(自尊), lower motivation, and declining student performance. The new research suggests that a shift in educators’ focus may help. When students are driven by the pressure to look smart, they remain highly likely to self-handicap. Instead, focusing on students’ progress over the rankings can further reduce their need to create excuses. “By understanding the psychology behind this behavior,” Xiang noted, “we hope this research reveals ways to prevent harmful academic self-handicapping.”
12. What may be the intention behind the behaviors in Paragraph 1?
A. To obtain higher ratings from judges. B. To express unique personalities.
C. To convince people of their competence. D. To make excuses for possible failure.
13. What does the underlined word “game” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Influence. B. Follow. C. Test. D. Record.
14. What can be concluded from the experiment?
A. Success depends on appropriate strategies.
B. Self-handicapping mainly benefits failures.
C. Self-handicapping can protect one’s image.
D. Average players are likeliest to self-handicap.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Learners Protect Reputation: A Social Strategy
B. How Students Avoid Failure: A Lesson for Educators
C. Why Students Disable Themselves: An Educator’s Guide
D. How Learners Self-Handicap: A Disturbance of Judgment
D 13. A 14. C 15. C
根据第一段中的“All are examples of what psychologists call “self-handicapping” — creating obstacles to success to protect one’s reputation.(所有这些都是心理学家所说的“自我设限”的例子 —— 制造通往成功路上的障碍,以保护自己的名声)”以及第二段中的“So, if a person expects to be judged, creating an obstacle can give failure another explanation.(所以,如果一个人预料自己会被评价,制造一个障碍就可以为失败提供另一种解释)”可知,这些行为背后的意图是为可能到来的失败准备借口。
根据第二段中的“So, if a person expects to be judged, creating an obstacle can give failure another explanation. In this way, self-handicapping is an attempt to game those judgments.(所以,如果一个人预料自己会被评价,制造一个障碍就可以为失败提供另一种解释。这样一来,自我设限就是一种试图game这些评价的尝试)”可知,自我设限是用来影响他人对自己的评价。故猜测划线词意为“影响”,与influence同义。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“As the model confirmed, the behavior occurred most frequently among those least likely to fail — or to succeed. When self-handicappers succeeded, judges rated them especially highly. The behavior also softened judgments of those who failed.(正如模型证实的那样,这种行为在最不容易失败,也最不容易成功的人身上发生得最频繁。当自我设限者成功时,评价者会给他们特别高的评价。这种行为也弱化了人们对失败者的负面评价)”可知,自我设限能够维护一个人的形象。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“All are examples of what psychologists call “self-handicapping” — creating obstacles to success to protect one’s reputation.(所有这些都是心理学家所说的“自我设限”的例子 —— 制造通往成功路上的障碍,以保护自己的名声)”以及最后一段中的“By understanding the psychology behind this behavior,” Xiang noted, “we hope this research reveals ways to prevent harmful academic self-handicapping.(向指出:“通过理解这种行为背后的心理,我们希望这项研究找到方法,去预防有害的学业自我设限。”)”
It used to be simple: if you were stuck on homework, you went to a tutor or looked through a textbook. Today, many students admit their first instinct (本能) is to open short-video apps. ____16____ And here’s the catch: while short-form video makes information accessible, are students actually learning or just scrolling (滚屏)?
Students aren’t choosing short videos to study by accident; it fits the way their brains are wired in today’s world. Studies suggest the average attention span has dropped to around 8-12 seconds. Quick videos match that rhythm. Instead of sitting through a 40-minute lecture, students can learn one concept or definition in a minute. Short videos also turn idle time, like waiting for the bus, into learning opportunities. ____17____ However, for every upside, there’s a hidden drawback that students often feel but don’t always recognize. Short videos sometimes oversimplify — students may remember a “fun fact” but struggle to apply it in problem-solving. Constant exposure to fast content trains the brain to expect stimulation, making complex reading or full lectures harder to sit through. ____18____ Students can end up overwhelmed, recalling bits of many topics but mastering none.
Here’s where it gets tricky. Short-video platforms aren’t built for studying; they’re built for endless scrolling. That means students who go in looking for a “quick explainer” often end up an hour deep into unrelated content. ____19____ Students describe feeling “busy” while scrolling through study content, but later realize they didn’t remember much.
____20____ The reality is, it’s both. Short-form content is a tool, not a replacement. Students who use it as a supplement to traditional learning gain the best of both worlds: quick tips and deeper practice. Those who depend only on it often face burnout, divided attention, or surface-level understanding.
A. So, is short-form video helping or hurting?
B. This makes video-learning fit easily into daily life.
C. Many creators make money by posting educational clips.
D. To them, such videos don’t just entertain but feel like learning.
E. Short videos make students unable to finish homework within fixed time.
F. Besides, too many short videos, brief as they are, can cause information overload.
G. This unclear line between entertainment and education makes it harder to manage time.
D 17. B 18. F 19. G 20. A

以及下文“Students describe feeling ‘busy’ while scrolling through study content, but later realize they didn’t remember much. 可知,本空要说娱乐与教育的界限模糊带来的时间管理问题,G选项“This unclear line between entertainment and education makes it harder to manage time. 能承上启下,符合题意,该选项中的“This unclear line between entertainment and education”指代上文的“looking for a ‘quick explainer’ often end up an hour deep into unrelated content”,且该选项中的“harder to manage time”与下文的“feeling ‘busy’ while scrolling through study content, but later realize they didn’t remember much”相呼应,表示时间管理失控导致学习效率低下。
由下文“The reality is, it’s both. Short-form content is a tool, not a replacement. (现实是,两者兼而有之。短视频内容是一种工具,而非替代品。)”可知,本空要说提出短视频是帮助还是伤害的问题,A选项“So, is short-form video helping or hurting? (那么,短视频是在帮助还是在伤害?)”能引出下文,符合题意,该选项以设问的方式总结全文争论,且该选项中的“helping or hurting”与下文的“it’s both”形成直接回应,表示答案不是非黑即白,而是取决于使用方式。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Judy tapped “join” on the screen, her only motivation being the extra credits. “If you join the speech contest, you will gain five,” she told her friend Leo, who was lazily leaning against the wall. “Easy points,” Leo laughed, thinking a speech was just a collection of beautiful words.
To save time, Judy fed the topic “My Hero” to an AI tool. Within thirty seconds, a polished text appeared: Newton, Lincoln, Tesla... The stories of virtually any famous person came alive with perfect sentences. She printed it out, feeling satisfied with this neat yet shallow, fancy article. To her, it was a quick way to win without much effort.
However, the rehearsal (彩排) was a total disaster. Under the bright stage lights, she struggled to recall the long, difficult sentences. The words felt like borrowed clothes that didn’t fit. Coach Kim frowned, his eyes full of disappointment. “Good voice, Judy, but where is your heart? These aren’t your heroes.” Judy forced a smile, but the coach’s words stayed in her mind all afternoon.
That night, the familiar rattle (哐当声) of metal wheels woke her up. Looking out of the window, she saw her parents pushing their food cart (小推车) into the cold darkness. Dad whispered, “Fog’s thick. Gloves ready?” Mom answered, “Always.” Watching their fading figures, Judy felt a sharp pang in her heart. Suddenly, the “heroes” in her AI-generated text seemed so far away, while the true heroes were right here in the cold wind.
She sat at her laptop, deleted every word of the AI text, and typed: “My heroes leave at 4 am, so the city can eat at 7 am.” She wrote about the worn-out gloves and the smell of steaming hot dogs. The words were plain, but they breathed with true love.
The contest day finally came. Judy stood behind the curtain, legs shaking. Her parents sat in the third row, still wearing their faded work jackets. Judy pressed her handwritten speech to her chest, felt her heart pounding heavily, and whispered: “Stay calm.”

Then came Judy’s turn. Stepping onto the bright stage, Judy took a deep breath and looked straight at her parents. Instead of reciting stiff fancy sentences, she spoke softly and sincerely. She shared how her parents stuck to their food cart every early morning, braving cold wind and thick fog to bring warmth to others. Her plain but heartfelt words flowed naturally. Tears welled up in her eyes as she talked about their hard work and silent dedication. The whole audience listened quietly, totally touched by her genuine story.
After two seconds’ silence, thunderous applause erupted. Everyone stood up, cheering for her moving speech. Judy spotted her parents clapping warmly with tearful smiles, their eyes filled with pride. Coach Kim nodded in approval, clearly impressed by her sincere performance. Judy finally understood that true speeches lie in real feelings rather than fancy AI words. True heroes are ordinary people who stick to their duties and bring warmth to life.
