Sports are not a modern invention. People around the world have enjoyed exciting and meaningful sports since ancient times. Here are some examples of ancient sports from different cultures.
Egyptian Pharaohs’ Running Race
In ancient Egypt, kings demonstrated their physical strength by running during the Sed Festival. This special event took place when a king had ruled for 30 years. For example, Pharaoh Djoser ran around the temple for a long time to prove he was still healthy and strong.

In the Zhou Dynasty’s royal education, archery was a required skill for men. Competitions, called “sheyi”, were held with strict rules and ceremonies. To win, a person needed both physical skill and qualities such as grace, self-control and respect. These contests often took place in temples and served to promote moral values and social order.

The day Barry and Margaret Sharman got married in 1968, they brought their wedding party to a photographer’s studio in Armstrong, British Columbia. However, when the photos became available, the newlyweds, with little money to spare, left the photos uncollected. “I just filed it away in my mind after we moved to Vancouver Island,” said Margaret. Years later, the studio closed and the photographer was nowhere to be found.
Then last month, more than 56 years later, Margaret was reunited with her long-lost wedding photos from Sandy Farynuk, one of her former bridesmaids and longtime friends. The photos had resurfaced when they were found in a box of photos donated from a garage sale to the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery, where Farynuk’s historian friend worked. “Oh, my God That’s me!” Farynuk cried out. The Sharmans had also never seen the photos.
“It was right before Christmas and I had the photos delivered to them by their son, Noah,” Farynuk said. “I’ve known Margaret since I was two and I knew how much these would mean to her.” Barry Sharman said this unexpected gift brought Margaret to tears and they were both instantly transported back to their wedding reception.
It was especially touching for Margaret to see her older late sister Ruth in the group photo. “My mother made all of the bridesmaids’ pink dresses, and she made my wedding dress and put a lot of little flowers around the sleeves,” Margaret recalled. “I was overwhelmed when I saw the photos — that day is not very clear to me, but I remember that night one of them cheerfully picked Margaret up, took her shoe off and passed it around so people could fill it with money,” said Barry. The donations paid for their honeymoon.
Margaret said she wished she could track down the photographer. “He’s an angel,” she said. “The photos he took 56 years ago are the most thoughtful and precious gift I could ever have imagined.”
24. Why didn’t the couple get their wedding photos?

26. What can be learned about the couple’s wedding reception?
A. Margaret’s sister missed their wedding.
B. Barry remembers every detail of the dresses.
C. Margaret’s mother offered them great assistance.
D. A certain friend took off Margaret’s shoe just for fun.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A photographer Creates Miracles
B. Lost Photos Finally Reappear
C. A Wedding Over Half a Century ago
D. Warm Memories Through the Years

As artificial intelligence (AI) takes off, how do we efficiently integrate it into our lives and our work? Bridging the gap between promise and practice, Jann Spiess, an associate professor at Stanford Graduate School of Business, is exploring how algorithms can be designed to most effectively support — rather than replace — human decision-makers.
“We don’t have much work — yet — that takes design of the human-AI interface really seriously,” says Spiess. “Our debate about AI and the capabilities of AI is really misplaced, because it’s all about ‘Is AI better than the human?’”, he continues. “I think instead we should be asking, ‘What are the complementary uses of AI?’”
If users rely too heavily on an algorithm, they may ignore relevant context or information the algorithm may not know. On the other hand, if users view recommendations as overly complex or irrelevant, they may dismiss them altogether, forgoing any advantages algorithmic recommendations may provide.
“Therefore, the best algorithm should take into account how a human will interact with the information it provides,” Spiess says. In a recent paper, Spiess outlines a conceptual design framework modeling how humans respond to algorithmic recommendations — and presents a different approach to building AI tools. This approach is known as complementarity.
The researchers tested different recommendation strategies in an experiment, where participants made 25 hiring decisions with different levels of algorithmic assistance. People using a complementary algorithm — which offered selective recommendations in cases where a human was likely to be uncertain or incorrect — made the most accurate decisions, outperforming those using a purely predictive algorithm and those using no algorithmic support.
It’s an encouraging result. “There’s much promise around AI improving decisions,” says Spiess, who’s particularly interested in applications that affect how services are allocated in resource-limited environments, such as placing teachers in underserved school districts with limited budgets. “If you could use algorithms to improve resource allocation, there are many high-value use cases in areas where we don’t have ready or clear solutions,” he says.
28. What is the main issue with current AI debates according to Spiess?
A. Ignoring the potential of AI.
B. Overemphasis on AI’s superiority.
C. Misunderstanding AI’s purpose.
D. Lack of focus on AI’s efficiency.
29. What does the underlined word “forgoing” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Abandoning.
B. Stressing.
C. Admitting.
D. Assessing.
30. What does Spiess think is the key to effective AI design?
A. Enhancing algorithm complexity.
B. Reducing human dependence on AI.
C. Considering human-AI interaction.
D. Improving AI’s independent capability.
31. What does the experiment on hiring decisions show?
A. Predictive algorithms were the most helpful.
B. Human judgment alone was the most accurate.
C. No algorithmic support was completely the best.
D. Complementary algorithms were highly effective.
D
Parents all over the world know that getting kids to eat healthy foods is an uphill battle. Getting them to avoid junk food when they’ve got some spending money is even tougher. However, new research by Szu-chi Huang, an associate professor of marketing at Stanford Graduate School of Business, shows that children tend to choose healthier food if you offer them a deal.
In their study, more than 2,400 kids ages 6 to 11 were offered three-day discount they could use at school to buy healthy beverages such as a cereal shake or a natural fruit beverage. The children did react to the price promotions, buying more of the healthy products. Huang believes that the discounts worked partly because of their novelty. “If we can make it fun, like a puzzle or a game, we draw children’s attention to price and value,” she says, “which may not have been important to them before.”
Another key finding is what happened after the experiment was over and the discounts ended. At one school children continued to choose healthy options more frequently than before the study. This surprised the researchers since it refuted what they’d seen in the literature. The reason for the effect, Huang believes, is that this study promoted a healthy option that was not very expensive to begin with. The experiment encouraged children to pay attention to price, so this relatively inexpensive healthy product kept its appeal even after the discount was removed.
However, this also suggests that short-term discounts on healthy food could have the unintended longer-term effect of drawing cost-conscious kids toward cheaper, less healthy products. In contrast, long-term incentives could steer kids toward healthy products that are seen as relatively affordable, bridging the “price gap” between inexpensive, unhealthy food and more expensive healthy foods. What’s essential, Huang says, is to help develop healthy consumption habits and preferences in children that last beyond the length of the promotion.
Huang says this research has lessons for marketers, who often struggle to make healthy products attractive to kids. It also could help schools provide healthier options since they act as “gatekeepers” for what students eat during the school day and how products are promoted on campus.
32. What may be Huang’s explanation of kids’ positive reaction to the price promotions?
A. The discount was new and fun.
B. The option was healthier and cheaper.
C. Kids could play games with classmates.
D. Kids realized the meaning of price and value.
33. What does the underlined word “refuted” in the third paragraph mean?
A. refused.
B. contradicted.
C. supported.
D. compared.
34. What potential disadvantage might short-term discounts have?
A. They promote a habit of healthy eating.
B. They may boost unhealthy consumption.
C. They affect kids’ understanding on value.
D. They make unhealthy food more expensive.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The practical applications of the research findings.
B. Ways to improve the taste of healthy food for children.
C. The responsibility schools take in students’ diets.
D. Challenges marketers face in promoting healthy food.

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore located near the river through the city. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, intending to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor family, the father, the mother, and three children shivering with cold in the winter wind. “I wish you a happy New Year,” cried Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country.” The man again shook his head, a confused expression flashed over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his dry mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly realized that these poor people were in distress.

SHE asked how I manage to pass so many tough exams and graduate, even though I wasn't fond of medical school. Well, for that, I want to share with you two easy steps. Step one, know what the exam is really about. When you fill a bucket, always put in the big rocks first. The smaller rocks will then automatically filled the remaining spaces, concentrate on the key areas the exam is testing, and don't stress about obscure details. To do this, review past exam papers, organize them by topic and study the main types of questions commonly tested in each step to practice, practice and practice. Possessing knowledge is one thing, but being able to apply IT in an exam is another. The ability to recall knowledge is important. One effective study method is teaching somebody else. I also recommend drawing mind maps, which is my personal favorite. Additionally, using tables to compare elements helps you remember and hence recall knowledge Better.
Minoan Bull-Leaping
The Minoan people created a very dangerous sport called bull-leaping. In this event, athletes would run directly at a charging bull, grab its horns and leap over its back. Wall paintings from the Palace of Knossos show these exciting scenes.
Mesopotamian Wrestling
Ancient Mesopotamians practiced wrestling and boxing. Stone carvings show strong fighters wearing skirts during matches. These matches were intense, with fighters wrestling like wild animals. They showed fighters’ courage and strength.
Ancient Chinese Archery
In the Zhou Dynasty’s royal education, archery was a required skill for men. Competitions, called “sheyi”, were held with strict rules and ceremonies. To win, a person needed both physical skill and qualities such as grace, self-control and respect. These contests often took place in temples and served to promote moral values and social order.
Although ancient sports varied widely in form and intent, they universally highlighted the value of skill. Beyond mere competition, these activities were deeply integrated into their societies, reflecting cultural beliefs and shaping a sense of community.

【答案】B
【解析】细节理解题。根据第二段中 ““Our debate about AI and the capabilities of AI is really misplaced, because it’s all about ‘Is AI better than the human?’”, he continues. “I think instead we should be asking, ‘What are the complementary uses of AI?’”可知,Spiess认为当前关于AI的辩论主要问题在于过于强调AI的优越性,而没有关注其互补性用途。故选B项。

This approach is known as complementarity”可知,Spiess认为有效的人工智能设计的关键在于考虑人类与人工智能的交互。故选C项。
31. What does the experiment on hiring decisions show?
A. Predictive algorithms were the most helpful.
B. Human judgment alone was the most accurate.
C. No algorithmic support was completely the best.
D. Complementary algorithms were highly effective.
【答案】D
【解析】细节理解题。根据第五段中 “People using a complementary algorithm — which offered selective recommendations in cases where a human was likely to be uncertain or incorrect — made the most accurate decisions, outperforming those using a purely predictive algorithm and those using no algorithmic support”可知,关于招聘决策的实验表明,互补性算法非常有效。故选D项。

It’s easy to give in to the winter hibernation urge — but countless studies have shown that outdoor activity is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of anxiety, depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). ___36___ Here’s how to make the best use of our natural health service.
Starting small.
“Sometimes getting out and running 5km was like climbing Everest. It would take me all day just to find the energy to get out,” says Alex Staniforth, a mental health campaigner. ___37___ Try opening a window, sitting by natural light, or bringing nature indoors with plants. Group support.
Social commitments can also act as motivation for people with depression and anxiety. Having other people around us — whether that’s joining a club or committing to something with a friend — can really help. ___40___ “People are very quick to post their accomplishments on social media, but what you don’t see is the build-up,” says Gareth. “It doesn’t matter where people are now in their lives, they’ve had to work to get there. And you’ll get there too.”

40. 【答案】C 【解析】上文 “Having other people around us — whether that’s joining a club or committing to something with a friend — can really help.”讲完团体支持的好处后,用 “However”进行转折。下文 ““People are very quick to post their accomplishments on social media, but what you don’t see is the build-up,” says Gareth.”引用加雷斯的话,指出社交媒体上展示的只是别人的成就,看不到背后的付出,不要盲目比较。C 选项 “However, don’t compare yourself to others.”直接点明了本段后半部分的核心观点,与后文内容完全呼应。故选C项。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
He took out his dollars, and gave them all to the man.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are a dozen of books for you.”
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【参考范文】
He took out his dollars, and gave them all to the man. The man was so moved that he stood there, failing to say any words. A bright smile spread across the man’s face. He smiled back at Edward, waved goodbye to the family and went home delightedly. When Edward came home, his father asked what book he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. “I have bought no books,” he said. “I gave my money to a poor family, who seemed to be badly in need of help. I think I can wait for my books until next New Year.”
“My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are a dozen of books for you.” Edward couldn’t believe it! “I’m giving them to you, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New Year gift. Always be ready to help people around you!” his father added. Holding the books, Edward felt they were the best gift in the world.
【第一段】由首句“He took out his dollars, and gave them all to the man.”可知,本段应写穷人一家接过钱时的反应(愣住、说不出话、露出笑容)以及 Edward 空手回家后向父亲如实解释原委。【第二段】由第二段首句““My dear boy,” said his father, “Here are a dozen of books for you.”” 1】The man was so moved that he stood there, failing to say any words.(so...that 引导结果状语从句、现在分词作状语)【高分句型2】I gave my money to a poor family, who seemed to be badly in need of help.(who 引导非限制性定语从句)

Do you often have people over for dinner?
W: Yes, I really like cooking. I often invite my friends over and cook for them.
M: I love cooking too, but the problem is that my place is really small. Even though I would love to invite my friends over for dinner, I never do.

M: Great! Oh, look at these piles of work. I want to finish everything quickly so we can go out to dinner tonight. What do you think?

W: How was your band formed?
M: Two musicians from music schools saw us playing in a concert. They asked if we’d like to form a band with them. We agreed to try it out.
W: How was the band in the first year?
M: The audience enjoyed our performance at the local concert. Then we recorded two songs and sent them to a music company. They asked us to join them, but our parents said we had to finish college first.
W: Have you experienced any letdown?
M: Everything we’ve recorded has done well. Three singles have gone to number one, and our first album has sold over a million copies. However, I’ve been ill recently, so we have to start recording our second album late, which is a pity.
Text 10
A friend who studies architecture at a good college told me that her math grades are holding her back. She asked how I managed to pass so many tough exams and graduate even though I wasn’t fond of medical school. Well, for that, I want to share with you 2 easy steps. Step one: know what the exam is really about. When you fill a bucket, always put in the big rocks first. The smaller rocks will then automatically fill the remaining spaces. Concentrate on the key areas the exam is testing and don’t stress about obscure details. To do this, review past exam papers, organize them by topic, and study the main types of questions commonly tested in each. Step two: practice, practice, and practice.
