At a workshop in Yongjia, East China’s Zhejiang Province, a piece of boxwood rests quietly on the workbench. Before making the first cut, 53-year-old woodcarver Ye Xiaopeng often spends time working out the overall composition, and the expressions of his figures he wants to convey. In his view, woodcarving is not simply about carving what you see; a craftsman has to think through what he wants to express before putting knife to wood.
To outsiders, we may take it for granted that someone born into a family of woodcarvers would follow the same path. But Ye believes that what has truly shaped his artistic vision is not only the craft passed down through generations, but also the influence of reading.
Ye’s earliest reading memories had little to do with art theory. What left the deepest impression on him, however, was a copy of the book, Back to Beginnings, which was the first book that made him realize how reading could shape the way a person thinks. Looking back, he believes the book’s influence lay not in any particular knowledge it provided, but in the way it encouraged him to observe the world and reflect on it. “The influence wasn’t obvious,” he said. “It was more like the grain (纹理) hidden inside a piece of wood, forming for decades, shaping both my work and my life.” After entering the arts-and-crafts world, reading gradually evolved from a personal interest to a professional necessity. From learning carving techniques and copying traditional designs to studying sculptural references and materials on the history of sculpture, books remained a constant companion throughout his professional development.
In Ye’s view, a sculptor can observe a figure’s expression or posture from everyday life, but the cultural meanings and spiritual qualities behind the artwork must be built through reading. “Life provides vivid images; reading provides cultural depth,” he said. Every turned page strengthens a thread that links knowledge and experience, the present and the past, and ultimately, creativity and tradition.
24. What does Ye usually do before carving?
A. Refer to prior ideas. B. Go through relevant books.
C. Map out the full picture. D. Consult with experienced seniors.
25. How did Back to Beginnings influence Ye?
A. By offering carving skills. B. By inspiring deep reflection.
C. By strengthening family bonds. D. By providing useful solutions.
26. What can best describe Ye?
A. Thoughtful and committed. B. Old-fashioned and persistent.
C. Reserved and knowledgeable. D. Ambitious and straightforward.
27. What can we infer from Ye’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Tradition holds back creativity B. Life and reading fuel true art.
C. Life experience outweighs reading. D. Enough reading guarantees success.

While traditional smart windows are often associated with protecting indoors from heat and unwanted sunlight, their reflective impact on outdoor environments is frequently overlooked. A research team led by Professor Hong Chul Moon from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology has developed a smart window technology that allows users to adjust incoming light and heat according to their needs, while also reducing strong light for pedestrians (行人).
Unlike traditional smart windows, which passively respond to changes in temperature or light, these Korean smart windows allow real-time control via electrical signals. Their next-generation system, known as RECM, uses an electrical device to actively regulate the passing of both visible and near-infrared (近红线的) light that is invisible but produces heat.
The RECM system works in three distinct modes, each activated by voltage (电压) control. In Mode I, ideal for winter months, this mode allows both sunlight and heat to pass through, much like a traditional window, to warm up indoor spaces naturally. In Mode Ⅱ, the window takes on a deep blue thanks to a chemical reaction forming two elements, providing privacy and a heat-blocking effect. In Mode Ⅲ, small metal bits attach to the surface and create a reflective layer that blocks both light and heat. Meanwhile, the colored layer absorbs reflected light, reducing external strong light and protecting pedestrians from being blinded.
The research team also demonstrated the technology’s practical heat-blocking effect in an experiment using a small model house. While the indoor temperature of a model with regular glass rose to 58.7℃ in 45 minutes, the model equipped with the RECM technology in Mode Ⅲ only saw a rise to 31.5℃.
“This research introduces a smart window platform that goes beyond current technology, which is limited to controlling indoor light, by also providing practical heat reduction and decreasing strong light for pedestrians,” said Professor Moon. “In the future, it could be used in various industries, including not only architecture but also in vehicles, trains, and more.”
28. What is a common problem with traditional smart windows?
A. Inability to adjust indoor heat. B. Poor control over indoor sunlight.
C. Lack of indoor privacy protection. D. Ignorance of external reflection effects.
29. What makes Mode Ⅲ different from the other two modes?
A. Letting in sunlight directly. B. Changing into a blue state.
C. Relying on outdoor temperatures. D. Benefiting indoor and outdoor environments.
30. What can be concluded from the experiment in paragraph 4?
A. Regular glass fails to block outdoor heat. B. Mode Ⅲ consumes more electrical power.
C. The system performs well in blocking heat. D. Indoor temperature depends on window sizes.
31. What is Professor Moon’s attitude towards the RECM technology?
A. Positive. B. Neutral. C. Doubtful. D. Conservative.
D
How did a tiny ant manage to take a lion’s dinner? This isn’t the start of an Aesop’s fable; rather, it’s the outcome of a study published on January 25 in Science, showing how a small disturbance in one helpful relationship on the African grasslands can spread through the ecosystem, ultimately reaching even the lion’s den (穴).
Over the past 15 years, wildlife ecologist Jake Goheen and his team at the University of Wyoming, working with the Ol Pejeta Wildlife Reserve in Kenya, have studied how acacia ants protect whistling thorn trees from being eaten. When elephants attempt to feed on these trees, the ants rush into the elephants’ nostrils (鼻腔), biting and stinging, which forces them to back away, Goheen explains.
Between 2002 and 2005, however, the reserve was invaded by the big-headed ant, an aggressive non-native species that likely arrived in the area through imported produce brought to nearby homes or tourist camps. These ants quickly overpowered and pushed out the local acacia ants. Without these native defenders, elephants and other large plant-eating animals damaged the thorn trees five to seven times more frequently than before.
In a parallel study, Goheen’s team examined the hunting behaviour of lions in the reserve. They tracked six lionesses, observing their activity and kill rates, and measured visibility around recent kills. They found that areas populated by big-headed ants had 2.67 times greater visibility than those without — meaning lions could see their prey (猎物) farther away, but so could the prey see the lions.
As visibility increased, the lions’ chances of successfully catching zebras fell from 62% to just 22%. Yet the lions did not starve; instead, they adapted their diet, turning to buffalo as a primary prey, which rose from 0% to 42% of their kills. “Buffalo are large and aggressive,” Goheen notes, “so this is a high-risk choice of prey.”
Goheen’s study provides a valuable insight into how ecologists should carefully observe helpful pairs like the acacia ants and thorn trees, where even a small change in one relationship can spread widely, drastically impacting the food web and altering which animals eat which.
32. What did Goheen’s team study for 15 years?
A. Arrival of big-headed ants in Kenya. B. Defense of thorn trees by acacia ants.
C. Effect of imported produce on habitats. D. Movement of elephants across grasslands.
33. Why did elephants harm thorn trees more often?
A. Local ants were replaced. B. Thorn trees spread widely.
C. Trees became more visible. D. Other plant-eaters appeared.
34. What impact did increased visibility have on lions?
A. It made hunting buffalo easier. B. It helped them avoid risky prey.
C. It reduced their zebra catch rates. D. It improved their hiding from prey.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Ant vs. the Elephant: In Unity There Is Strength
B. African Grasslands: A Land of Mysterious Interactions
C. How an Invasive Ant Changed a Lion’s Dinner Menu?
D. How Big-headed Ants Climbed to the Top of the Food Chain?
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming part of students’ school life. Many students use AI for schoolwork or to prepare for tests. Used in the right way, AI can make learning more interesting and help students understand difficult ideas. ____36____ Parents should therefore try to understand how their children use AI.
The main problem is that AI can make it easy for students to avoid the hard part of learning. Real learning requires effort — trying, failing, and working through confusion. For instance, a student might ask AI to write an essay or solve a math problem instead of doing the work themselves. Though the task gets done quickly, the student may gain little understanding. ____37____ This is especially harmful for younger learners still developing foundational skills.
For parents, the solution is not to ban AI, but to stay involved and guide its use wisely. Parents can ask how often and why their children use AI for schoolwork. ____38____ Parents can also explore AI with their children by checking its answers together and discussing both its strengths and weaknesses.
A practical rule is “work first, AI later.” Children should try to solve problems, read materials, or begin assignments on their own before seeking AI assistance. ____39____ In this way, AI becomes a support tool, not a substitute for thinking.
The most crucial skill in the AI age is not simply knowing how to use the technology. ____40____ AI should support learning, not replace it. With critical thinking and confidence, they can make wise choices about technology.
A. It is knowing when to use it and when to think for yourself.
B. Such questions can help parents understand their children’s habits.
C. This can help children learn to question AI instead of simply trusting it.
D. Children should use AI whenever they have difficulty with schoolwork.
E. In fact, some students find it easier to learn when they use AI from the beginning.
F. Without enough effort, students may finish their work without gaining the skills behind it.
G. However, depending on AI too much may weaken students’ ability to think and solve problems independently.

In a coastal community near Brighton, a disheartening issue had been troubling local residents for years. Once golden sands were littered with plastic bags and broken bottles. Dirty foam drifted on the shallow water. From time to time, passers-by spotted seabirds trapped in plastic ropes, struggling desperately to free their wings. Occasionally, weak sea turtles would be seen crawling onto shore, suffering from swallowing plastic waste. The once-picturesque shoreline was spoiled by piles of plastic waste that kept building up day by day. Many wildlife-lovers grew upset at the terrible scene, yet few took practical action. It was in this situation that two young students, Chloe and Nora, decided to take matters into their own hands.
Chloe and Nora were classmates and best friends from Brighton High School, both passionate about environmental preservation and deeply concerned about the coastal marine-pollution crisis. Witnessing more injured sea creatures washed up on the beach, they knew they could not stand by any longer. Determined to bring about a change, they undertook a mission that would soon catch the whole community’s attention.
Their journey began with thorough research and planning. To carry out their work more efficiently, the two girls decided to split up. Chloe searched online for marine-protection projects and contacted local marine biologists, who told them plastic ropes and abandoned fishing nets posed the greatest threat to sea wildlife. Nora talked with beach-goers and fishermen to gather first-hand information. To her surprise, fishermen admitted they often threw worn-out nets into the sea, while some visitors had little awareness of ocean pollution. Armed with this knowledge, they worked hard to form a comprehensive protection plan, sharing it with local residents to seek their advice in the meantime. And Chloe and Nora recorded the whole process with their camera for future reference.

M: Look at all the parks. It’s wonderful to see how clean and green these European cities are. And look! There’s the Royal Factory. It has been making world-class silk for hundreds of years.
W: I see. And what’s over there? Look at all the people!
M: That’s the Central Station next to the Central Garden. The Central Garden is famous around the world as an amusement park.
W: Will we have time to go there?
M: Of course! We’re on vacation, remember?

B. Reduce insect damage.
C. Offer planting methods.
【答案】17. A 18. C 19. B 20. A
【解析】
【详解】Take care of your plants. They may scream if you treat them badly, according to an article published in a magazine in Cell. Plants can make sounds when they are stressed. Plants interact with insects and other animals all the time, and many of these insects and animals use sounds for communication, so it would be very inconvenient for plants not to use sounds at all. Lilach Hadany told BBC Science Focus. With this in mind, the research team started by recording plants' sounds. They divided the plants into three groups. One group wasn’t watered for five days, another group had the stems cut off and the last group remained untouched. The microphones caught sounds at a frequency of 40 to 80 kilohertz from the first two groups. The sounds grew louder and louder during the five days of water stress. They then began to decline as the plants dried out. The researchers haven’t yet discovered how the sounds are made. After the experiment, the team gathered the data and made software that could tell how plants feel. It could be useful for farmers in monitoring the conditions of their crops.

【答案】24. C 25. B 26. A 27. B

【答案】28. D 29. D 30. C 31. A

【导语】文章介绍韩国科学家研发的新型智能窗户技术(RECM),能实时调节光线热量,并减少对行人的强光反射,具有多种工作模式,有效阻挡热量,应用前景广阔。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段中的“While traditional smart windows are often associated with protecting indoors from heat and unwanted sunlight, their reflective impact on outdoor environments is frequently overlooked. (虽然传统的智能窗户通常与保护室内免受热量和不需要的阳光有关,但它们对室外环境的反射影响经常被忽视。)”可知,传统智能窗户存在的一个常见问题是忽视了其对外部环境的反射影响。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段中的“In Mode I, ideal for winter months, this mode allows both sunlight and heat to pass through, much like a traditional window, to warm up indoor spaces naturally.(在模式Ⅰ下,这种模式非常适合冬季月份,阳光和热量都能穿透进来,就像传统窗户一样,从而自然地使室内空间变暖。)”以及“In Mode Ⅱ, the window takes on a deep blue thanks to a chemical reaction forming two elements, providing privacy and a heat-blocking effect. (在模式Ⅱ下,由于发生化学反应生成了两种物质,窗户会呈现出深蓝色,从而提供私密性并起到隔热的作用。)”以及“In Mode Ⅲ, small metal bits attach to the surface and create a reflective layer that blocks both light and heat. Meanwhile, the colored layer absorbs reflected light, reducing external strong light and protecting pedestrians from being blinded.(在模式Ⅲ下,细小的金属颗粒会附着在表面,形成一层反射层,从而阻挡光线和热量。与此同时,彩色层会吸收反射光,减少外部强光,使行人免受眩目。)”,同时根据倒数第二段中“While the indoor temperature of a model with regular glass rose to 58.7℃ in 45 minutes, the model equipped with the RECM technology in Mode Ⅲ only saw a rise to 31.5℃.(普通玻璃模型的室内温度在45分钟内升至58.7℃,而采用RECM技术Ⅲ模式的模型仅上升至31.5℃。)”可知,模式Ⅲ不仅阻挡光和热(改善室内),还能减少外部强光保护行人(改善室外)。因此,模式Ⅲ与其他两种模式的不同之处在于它同时有利于室内和室外环境。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段中的“While the indoor temperature of a model with regular glass rose to 58.7℃ in 45 minutes, the model equipped with the RECM technology in Mode Ⅲ only saw a rise to 31.5℃. (虽然配备普通玻璃的模型室内温度在45分钟内升至58.7℃,但配备模式ⅢRECM技术的模型仅升至31.5℃。)”可知,通过对比实验数据,可以得出结论:该系统在阻挡热量方面表现良好。

【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. C
根据第二段“Over the past 15 years, wildlife ecologist Jake Goheen and his team at the University of Wyoming, working with the Ol Pejeta Wildlife Reserve in Kenya, have studied how acacia ants protect whistling thorn trees from being eaten.(在过去15年里,怀俄明大学野生动物生态学家杰克·戈欣及其团队与肯尼亚奥尔佩杰塔野生动物保护区合作,研究金合欢蚁如何保护哨刺树不被吃掉)”可知,团队15年研究的是金合欢蚁对刺树的保护作用。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“These ants quickly overpowered and pushed out the local acacia ants. Without these native defenders, elephants and other large plant-eating animals damaged the thorn trees five to seven times more frequently than before.(这种大头蚁迅速压制并赶走了本地金合欢蚁。没有了这些本土守护者,大象和其他大型植食动物破坏刺树的频率是以前的5到7倍)”可知,大象更多破坏刺树是因为本地金合欢蚁被外来大头蚁取代。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“As visibility increased, the lions’ chances of successfully catching zebras fell from 62% to just 22%.(随着能见度提高,狮子成功捕获斑马的概率从62%下降到仅22%)”可知,能见度提升降低了狮子捕获斑马的成功率。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“How did a tiny ant manage to take a lion’s dinner? This isn’t the start of an Aesop’s fable; rather, it’s the outcome of a study published on January 25 in Science, showing how a small disturbance in one helpful relationship on the African grasslands can spread through the ecosystem, ultimately reaching even the lion’s den
【答案】36. G 37. F 38. B 39. C 40. A
【解析】

【答案】参考范文
Looking at the photos and videos they had taken, Chloe and Nora came up with an idea to spread their efforts. They sorted out those heartbreaking shots of injured sea creatures and polluted shore, editing them into a thought-provoking short documentary. Apart from releasing it on popular social platforms, they also gave speeches in the local community, calling on residents to shoulder the responsibility of ocean protection. Their sincere appeal struck a chord with the public. Moved by their commitment, local fishermen promised to recycle worn-out fishing nets instead of casting them into the sea. Numerous volunteers flooded in, participating in regular beach clean-ups and helping hand out leaflets to raise visitors’ environmental awareness.
Six months went by, and remarkable changes swept across the coastline. Heaps of plastic waste had vanished completely. The golden sands lay neat and tidy, crystal-clear waves gently lapped the shore. Seabirds glided gracefully over the sparkling water, and occasionally lively sea turtles dragged themselves onto the beach to enjoy sunshine. Informative boards stood along the coast, reminding every visitor to guard the ocean ecosystem. Gazing at the vibrant and peaceful scene, Chloe and Nora felt an immense sense of achievement. It dawned on them that collective power could work wonders, and even ordinary teenagers were capable of bringing about positive transformations to the world.
