应用文范文
Dear Editor.
Our city is faced with serious environmental pressure,so it is vital for us to live a low-carbon life.
Here are my suggestions.First, cut down the use of disposable plastic products.Second, more people should be
involved in recy cling activities.Besides,we can choose public transport instead of driving private cars
Small actions can lay a solid foundation for a greener world.I hope everyone can take action.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
读后续写范文
Struck by Mr.Chen's words,I realized it was time to break my silence. That afternoon,I went to his office
bravely and asked about the confusing physics problems.Mr.Chen patiently explained them to me and cheered me
on.Inspired,I made a small plan:try to put up my hand once in each class. At first,my heart raced wildly every
time I wanted to speak. With Mia's encouragement,I managed to voice my opinion in a physics discussion, though
my voice trembled.
Little by little,my efforts to find my voice in class paid off.Gradually, speaking in public became less scary.I
could share my ideas smoothly and take part in class debates actively. In the next physics test,my score improved
greatly.I finally understood that courage, not perfection, matters most.Tearing down the wall of silence brought me
not only better grades but also greater confidence in myself. Excuse me, what's the time buyer . watch half past ten, but it's ten minutes slow. Steve Clark,45,a designer from Surrey, battled a fear of swimming for most of his life.As a child,he never
took to the water."It always bothered me.I used to look at people swimming on holiday, and think that I was
missing out on the enjoyment of it,"he says.
One bad experience when he was on a business trip in his twenties set Clark back even further. He decided to
take a dip in a hotel pool, thinking that it wouldn't be that difficult. This led to a panic moment after he lost his
第3页共9页
footing in the deep end of the pool."I was extremely scared that I couldn't swim,"he says.
But in 2014 Clark decided to take the plunge-after all,he was"running out of excuses"not to.Helped by
the gentle encouragement of his partner,he completed 10 beginners'lessons."It was difficult to start with.My
main fear was putting my head under the water, but the instructors taught me a technique to help.Once I learnt
how to do it,it got me over the fear,he says. The swimming lessons allowed him to participate in something that
always felt impossible.
Clark's story shows that midlife (is as good a time as any to learn.A study in 2018 by Columbia
University found that healthy older men and women can generate just as many new brain cells as younger people.
"We used to think of getting older as a loss:a time when we lose skills and lose our looks. But so much
research has shown that losing your abilities is not unavoidable,"says Linda Blair,a psychologist. She explains
that learning skills can help to keep our brains young."The brain is like a muscle,so when you leam something
new, you're exercising it and getting better blood flow to the brain. You're also reestablishing connections;you
don't have to lose a skill forever, you can regain it."
24.What initially bothered Clark according to the passage?
A.His panic in a hotel pool.
B.His lack of encouragement.
C.His failure in a business trip.
D.His inability to enjoy swimming.
25.What does the underlined phrase"take the plunge"in paragraph 3 mean?
A.accept the fact.B.have a go.
C.avoid the risk.
D.realize his dream.
26.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.Being old does not necessarily mean losing skills.
B.People can easily learn new skills at any stage of life.
C.Building up muscles can help blood flow into the brain.
D.Seniors can produce as many new brain cells as youths.
27.What does Clark's experience show?
A.No pains,no gains.
B.Every dog has its day.
C.Practice makes perfect.
D.It's never too old to learn.

While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music,Holly Herndon,an American
musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning
software called Spawn..The software uses artificial neural(人工神经的)networks modeled after the structure of
the human brain. These networks learn patterns from datasets during the training process.Based on the data, the
networks create new material that includes Herndon's own voice.
When producing her album,PROTO,Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the
input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI).The neural networks then produce
variations of that music."Computers surprise you in a way that an instrument doesn't,"Holly said.So what does
music sound like when composed by what is essentially a robot? It sounds like music from the future!
But Holly Herndon isn't the only one exploring AI in composition.Machines have played an increasingly
important role in music over the last century. The father of computer science,Alan Turing, developed the first
computer-generated music in 1951.Then in 1980,David Cope from the University of California,Santa Cruz,
developed EMI-Experiments in Musical Intelligence,a system that analyzes existing music and produces new
第4页共9页
pieces based on it.
AI might not take over the job of the "pop star"anytime soon,or will it?Miquela Sousa is a
computer-generated artist with over one million followers on Instagram."I'm a model and singer, and I'm a robot,"
Miquela said. This then raises the question:can we reproduce creativity using a computer?
Though those questions are not easy to answer,I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in
between.I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that combines human inventiveness with Al.
And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely
connected.
28.What plays an important role in producing PROTO?
A.Holly's special voice.
B.Holly's rich knowledge.
C.The input of existing music.
D.The use of an instrument
29.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The recent famous music artists.
B.The increasing diversity of AI music.
C.The development of computer science.
D.The history of computer-generated music.
30.Why does the author mention the example of Miquela Sousa?
A.To show the popularity of smart robots.
B.To promote deep thinking on AI musicians.
C.To explain the tasks of computer-generated artists.
D.To make comparisons between human and robotic artists.
31.What is the author's attitude towards music co-created by AI and humans?
A.Confident.
B.Surprised.
C.Confused.
D.Doubtful

ones that migrate (south, can live around eight months.Since the 1990s,monarch populations have dropped,
particularly at overwintering sites and populations found east of the rocky Mountains have reduced by around 80
percent.Researchers think that higher temperatures caused by climate change could be a reason. But until now,no
studies have specifically looked at that.
To test this hypothesis ()Fedorka and his team collected nearly 500 wild monarchs before their
migration in autumn and divided them into two groups. In the lab, they placed the two groups in migration-path
temperature extremes-23C and 19C,based on 70 years of data.After 26 days,survivors were put into
conditions that copied winter.
The team found the monarchs that had been in the warmer temperature started laying eggs early-even when
there was no milkweed around, the plant where monarchs lay their eggs and on which their young feed."These
monarchs are ready to drop out of migration at any moment,"Fedorka says. The team also found that male
monarchs from the warmer group were 88 percent more likely to die than those from the colder group. Both male
and female monarchs that had experienced warmer temperatures during their trip had a 28 percent higher risk of
dying during winter-no matter what the winter temperatures were.
The team admits that further research is needed to see how the results apply in the wild.Sonia Altizer,an
expert who studies insects, notes that monarchs'habit of stopping their trip south when it's warm means they
might one day stop migrating completely.Or,they could migrate only part of the way.And as monarchs help

plants by carrying pollen from one flower to another, losing their migration would also mean losing an amazing
natural event."If we lose these groups of monarchs that migrate,we can never get them back,Altizer says.

Take a Thought Walk
Have you ever considered when you get your best ideas?Or what you're doing when the solution to a
problem pops into your head?36But it could also be doing something unrelated, like taking a shower or
washing the dishes. The best ideas can land when you least expect them-but there are things you can do to help
them along, and that's where walking comes in.Even a quick walk can reduce stress, clarify thinking or give your
creativity a boost. Here's why you should put your best foot forward.
37 Michelle,a 21-year-old university student, discovered walking as a teen when she was going
through a tough period of stress. My mum loves walking,so it was her who first suggested I go out for a walk,"
she remembers."Within about 10 minutes it made me feel so much better."
The benefit of walking goes beyond calming-it opens mental capacity.Gillian Mills,a high school teacher
with 20 years of classroom experience, explains,"When students feel too stressed to think straight,we often
suggest a walk outside.38 Just picture stress like a balloon blowing up.It fills with air and pressure
builds.Walking and taking big breaths of fresh air are like gently letting the pressure out..."
39 It holds partial focus, letting you notice your surroundings while your mind wanders in new
directions.Whether you're revising for an exam, feeling stuck on a school project or working through a friendship
problem, going for a walk could help.
Stanford University confirms this effect. They found a clear link between walking and creative thinking.
40 This suggests that it increases what the experts call"divergent thinking"-the process where the
mind generates a wide range of possible ideas or solutions to a problem.
A.It helps clear your head for new thoughts.
B.Many experts believe walking improves mental health.

I have always been quiet and shy in class.Ever since primary school,I would sink into my seat whenever the
teacher asked a question, praying (not to be called on.It was not that I had nothing to say but the opposite
----I often had answers in mind, but the moment I thought about speaking up,my throat (would tighten
and my hands would go cold and wet. What if I was wrong? What if the whole class laughed at me?
This fear followed me into high school like a shadow.During discussions,my classmates would raise their
hands eagerly, debating and disagreeing with confidence.I,on the other hand, would sit motionless, with my eyes
fixed on my notebook, writing down the thoughts I would never share.
My best friend,Mia,kept encouraging me."You know the answers,"she would say."Just give it a try."But
her words, though kind, changed nothing.Even when I was truly confused about a lesson,I refused to raise my
hand or ask the teacher for help.I convinced myself that I could solve it by myself.
The bad result came last month during the mid-term physics exam.Staring at the difficult problems on the
test paper,I felt my heart drop. When the scores were announced,my physics grade had dropped by nearly twenty
points.
After class,Mr.Chen asked me to go to his office. He studied my paper for a moment, and then looked up.
"You are one of the brightest students I know,"he said quietly."Your problem is not lack of ability. It is the wall
of silence that you have built around yourself."
