Qiaopi (侨批) is also called “silver letters”. In some places in southern China, “pi” means “letter”. So Qiaopi is a special letter with money from overseas Chinese. Each letter brought news from faraway lands and sent money for their families back home in China.
Qiaopi was popular in Fujian and Guangdong. Many local families had relatives working in other countries. Because of this, Qiaopi once played an important role in their daily lives.
Long ago, overseas Chinese could only keep in touch with their families by writing letters. However, many of them were not good at reading or writing, and their family members could not read either. So they turned to Qiaopi writers for help.
In Fujian, 77-year-old Jiang Mingdian still keeps writing Qiaopi letters by hand. Jiang learned to write Qiaopi letters at the age of 18. Up to now, he has written over 100,000 Qiaopi letters. Like other Qiaopi letters, his letters are full of care for parents, wives and children. All these letters carry deep feelings for their hometown.
Nowadays, few people write Qiaopi letters. But Jiang tries his best to keep this old tradition alive. In fact, Qiaopi is more than words on paper. China has over 5 million ancient trees, yet only five of them are more than 5,000 years old and all grow in Shaanxi. In Bai’an Village, Shaanxi, there is a 5,500-year-old cypress (柏树). For the villagers, it is more than just a tree. It holds a special place in their lives.
The ancient cypress is about 23 metres tall. Although the tree is very old, its leaves stay green all year. One of the branches looks like a dragon. People give the old tree a number: 61102100001. Its first six numbers are the same as the villagers’ ID cards. So, people also call it “citizen (市民) No.1”.
People see the old cypress as a symbol of their home and history. When babies are born, they always bring them under the ancient tree. They hope that the babies can grow as strong as it.
To take good care of the tree, villagers built a walkway around it. Now, they take turns looking after it, just like how they care for a family member. Travel used to be about sightseeing, but now it is about experiences. Nowadays, there are a lot of new ways to travel. They can bring people special experiences.
“Military-style (特种兵式) travel” is one of the most popular travel ways among Chinese college students. They spend a little money traveling to as many places as they can, without having enough rest or sleep. For example, a young man called Nan Duoduo climbed the Five Great Mountains in China within only five days.
“Reverse (反向的) travel” is a new fashion among young Chinese travelers. “A man moved 1 meter every 10 minutes on Mount Huangshan” became a hot topic on the Internet during last year’s National Day holiday. More people like to spend their free time in less popular places to make themselves relaxed.
“Seal-collecting (印章收集) travel” adds great fun to people’s journeys. Collecting seals is an enjoyable experience. People feel excited when they find lovely seals. 【答案】
例文:
A True Friend in My Eyes
Everyone needs friends. But what is a true friend? In my eyes, a true friend is someone who always stands by you when you are in trouble.
I still remember a story between my friend and me. Last term, I did badly in a math exam. I felt very sad and wanted to give up. At that time, my best friend came to me. He not only comforted me but also helped me with my study. With his help, I made great progress.
I am lucky to have such a friend. As the saying goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” I will cherish our friendship forever.
