Lead-in
Part 1
Lead-in: What can you remember about our school sports meeting?
Think about these questions:
1. Have you ever taken part in the sports meeting?
2. What exciting moments can you still remember?
3. What sports events do we usually have?
4. If you were a reporter, how would you tell the story?
Today's task: Write a news report about the school sports meeting for Teen Life Magazine.
Lead in
My Moment
News Report
“Class 3 won the 4×100m relay by 0.3 seconds on Friday, breaking the school record set in 2019.”
Fact
及时 Fresh
客观 Objective
Organized
Pre-writing
Part 2
Pre-writing : What does a news report look like? P11
A news report has 4 parts. Can you tell what each part does?
Headline
Lead
Who / What / When
Where / Why
Body
End
Lead: Give information readers need to know, for example, who, what, when, where and why.
Body: Provide details about the event, such as the results of the matches / competitions and athletes' performances.
End: Develop readers' interest by adding thoughtful comments or things that will happen in the future.

‹#›
Read the news report written by a newspaper reporter. Label the parts of the report to see how the ideas are organized. P11
(1) Headline The Olympics—more than just sport
(2) On 20 February, the Olympic flame① was put out at the National Stadium in Beijing, bringing the 2022 Winter Olympics to a close.
(3) At Beijing 2022, over 2,800 athletes from 91 countries and regions competed for 109 gold medals. During the 17 days of competitions on the ice and snow, 17 Olympic records, including two world records, were broken. The athletes cheered for each other as they tried their best in each competition. Beijing 2022 is definitely a good example of the Olympic motto②: Faster, Higher, Stronger — Together.
(4) The 2026 Winter Olympics will take place in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Fans of winter sports around the world are definitely looking forward to that!
① flame /fleɪm/ n. 火焰 ② motto /ˈmɒtəʊ/ n. 格言
Lead
Body
End
Pre-writing : Before you write — check 3 things first
1
Genre: News Report (新闻报道)
Headline + Lead + Body + End
2
Tense: Simple Past Tense (一般过去时为主)
3
Person: Third Person (第三人称)
理由:新闻报道要客观 → the students / the athletes / our school / they,避免使用 I / we
‹#›
Pre-writing : How to write a headline and a lead?
Headline
Examples:
· School Sports Meeting Held Successfully
· Excitement Fills the Playground
· Heroes on the Sports Field
· Our Sports Day: Unforgettable Moments
Tips: 用名词短语,不用完整句子;
(Excitement Fills...)
Our school held the sports meeting
on ___ (date) on the playground.
Over ___ students took part in
different events and brought us
lots of surprises.
Checklist:
· When → last Friday / on October 23
· Where → on the school playground
· Who → students and teachers
· What → the annual sports meeting
· Why → to show sports spirit
1.7.2013
‹#›
Pre-writing : How to write the body and the end?
Body
· The most exciting event was the 4×100m relay race.
· As soon as the gun went off, the runners rushed forward.
· Though some competitors failed to win, they won warm cheers.
End
· The sports meeting was more than a competition.
· It taught us the true meaning of teamwork.
· We are looking forward to the next one.
· The most important thing is not to win,
but to take part. — Pierre de Coubertin
‹#›
