Iceland has long been identified as having unique environments. Here you can walk and swim between tectonic (地壳构造的) plates, bath in geothermal waters, and experience the wild landscapes. Furthermore, these unique environments have attracted the space-science community to use Iceland as one of its test sites for missions travelling to Mars (火星).
DAY 1
Arrive in Reykjavik.
After check-in, you will visit the geothermal pools of the Blue Lagoon to relax after your flight, before returning to your hotel to freshen up. You will then head to the Aurora Basecamp Observatory, where you will be able to see the northern lights recreated indoors. In the evening, space expert Niamh Shaw will give the first of two talks on our attempt to establish bases on other planets.
DAY 2
After breakfast, you will set out on special vehicles towards Þingvellir National Park, a registered UNESCO world heritage (遗产) site accompanied by Niamh. Here, you will have the opportunity to do something that you can’t do anywhere else, the opportunity to swim between the tectonic plates. In the evening, you will enjoy a second talk from Niamh.
DAY 3
Today you begin your journey towards the 2020 NASA test site, where the NASA SAND_E Mars Rover is being tested. NASA scientists will be on hand to explain the project, along with updates of the current Mars missions and the most recent findings.
DAY 4
In 2019, Iceland Space Agency hosted the ISAGEVR1 Expedition to Grimsvötn Volcano on top of the Vatnajökull Glacier (冰川) to field test the MS1 Mars Analog Spacesuit designed by the NASA/Johnson space centre. We will be working together with the agency to create a unique experience for you today on the glacier.
DAY 5
In the afternoon, you will reach the bridge between the continents, spanning a gap in between the two tectonic plates, on your way to Keflavik Airport and your evening flight home.
21. Who would be most interested in this travel arrangement to Iceland?
A. Fiction writers.
B. Space enthusiasts.
C. Wildlife protectors.
D. Professional swimmers.
22. Which days include chances to experience something about Mars?

As a kid, Pamela Akuku spent her weekends exploring the National Museums of Kenya, following along with her mom who worked there. Akuku became fascinated with the researchers. She saw them using various equipment and researching the fossils carefully. “But I didn’t know what they were doing at the time,” she says. “I kept asking my mom about it.”
Akuku’s mom saw her daughter’s curiosity and signed her up for the museum’s Young Researchers Club. Akuku soon took part in mock excavations (模拟挖掘) and reconstructed bones. “I enjoyed reading and puzzles,” says Akuku. “And this was a mixture of the two.”
The museum experiences helped inspire her career as an archeologist. After her four years in university, she was sure that she wanted to study archaeology. She did her master’s in South Africa and majored in zooarchaeology (动物考古学). She is now at the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution in Tarragona, Spain. There, she studies how ancient humans modified (改良) animal bones. Her research is helping to reveal more about where early humans lived. She’s currently studying the remains from Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge, where researchers previously discovered stone tools and evidence of early human ancestors going back as far as 2 million years.
Akuku gives some advice to people who want to do her job. “Be prepared to come across hard conditions. Working in this field is challenging. You have to work twice as hard just to be recognized,” Akuku said. But she has learned to deal with it. Now she always tells everyone the efforts are worthy.
24. Why did Akuku’s mother let her join in the Young Researchers Club?
A. Akuku showed interest in the club. B. Akuku’s mom was curious about the club.
C. Akuku’s mom wanted Akuku to help with her job. D. Akuku hoped to be an archaeologist.
25. What is Akuku’s present research about?
A. Why zooarchaeology is popular. B. When the relics of Tarragona appeared.
C. What can be found from ancient fossils. D. How ancient people modified animal bones.
26. What can we know about Tanzania’s Olduvai Gorge?
A. Many stone tools remain to be found there. B. Ancient human may live there 2 million years ago.
C. There are few relics left at present. D. Few researchers show interest in it.
27. In Akuku’s opinion, if you wish to be an archaeologist, you should ______.
A. deal with challenges with colleagues B. learn to be very smart
C. do the job harder than other people D. believe what you do is important

Mathea Allansmith isn’t your typical grandmother. She’s the oldest woman in the world to have completed a marathon. She was 92 years 194 days old when she crossed the finish line at the 2022 Honolulu Marathon, setting the record for the oldest female to complete a marathon.
Mathea, now 94, of Koloa, Hawaii, USA, stays in shape all year round by running seven days a week, no matter what the weather is. Come rain or shine, she covers 36 miles every week, even when she’s on holiday. The retired doctor didn’t take up running until she was 46 years old —after a friend suggested running two miles per day.
“The Honolulu Marathon is my favorite marathon mainly because it doesn’t close the gate at a certain time, which allows even the slowest runner to finish the race,” she said. “It’s one of the best races. Fantastic registration (注册), set-up and management make it a joy to run the race.”
Mathea, who doesn’t allow her age to slow her down, thinks she is the happiest person when she’s on the road. She enjoys running for miles and waving and saying hello to the people she passes. To stay in shape, Mathea keeps a steady training routine (惯例) . “I train all year round but increase the mileage 18 weeks before a marathon,” she said.
Mathea said it was her career as a doctor that allowed her to understand how her body and mind respond to diet and exercise. “I see the direct relation between moving and health,” she said. “It is important to reduce stress rather than ignoring it without a plan on how to do so. Of course, exercise of any kind is a natural stress reducer.”
Mathea thought getting through the finish line and winning a Guinness World Record title was the excitement of her life. “My family completely surprised me after the 2022 Honolulu Marathon, in which I achieved the world record, by wearing matching T-shirts stating my achievements,” she said.
28. What do we know about Mathea from the first two paragraphs?
A. She used to be in poor health.
B. She is the oldest to win a marathon.
C. She runs daily regardless of the weather.
D. She was encouraged by her patient to run.
29. Why is Mathea keen on the Honolulu Marathon?
A. It gives winners the best awards.
B. It provides runners with quality service..
C. It has no time limit for runners to finish.
D. It allows runners to set a world record easily.
30. What led to Mathea’s understanding of the connection between moving and health?
A. Her professional experience. B. Her training courses.
C. Her views on stress in life. D. Her hobby from young.
31. What message does Mathea’s story deliver?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Interest is the best teacher.
C. Age is no barrier to success.
D. Ups and downs make one strong.

It’s OK to run when it’s cold outside. But is it OK to run when you have a cold? Many runners find the activity addictive Running releases endorphins (脑内啡) into the brain, which are responsible for mood changes. The harder you run, the more endorphins released, and the happier you are. Some studies show this endorphin rush allows people to continue running even when injured or sick.
And that brings us to the point of this article—why people continue their running even when they’re sick. Most of us curl up in bed with some chicken soup and the remote control when we’re under the weather. But runners often hit the road. Are they helping or hurting themselves by jogging with a cold?
The best way to decide whether you should exercise is to employ what doctors call the “neck check”. Feel free to go running if your cold is “above the neck”. Doctors advise against proceeding with your exercise if your sufferings are “below the neck”.
Some people think that running in cold temperatures will actually make them sick. But this isn’t really true. You can’t freeze your lungs or windpipe (气管). Your body heats the air you breathe. When the air is particularly cold, you may feel a burning in your chest as you breathe. If that’s the case, try covering your mouth with a scarf or wearing a ski mask. That’ll help heat up the air before you breathe it in.
Keep in mind, if you have an infection (感染) in your chest or throat, running outside can indeed make things worse. But if you have a simple head cold, it would be fine to take that run, even if it’s cold outside.
32. Why do some people still go running even if they are not in good condition?
A. They’d like to keep their figures.
B. They don’t realize the harm it does.
C. They want to feel the pleasure it brings.
D. They enjoy the atmosphere of running with others.
33. What does the underlined word “proceeding” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Stopping. B. Working. C. Changing. D. Continuing.
34. What is the misunderstanding of running in cold weather?
A. It will make people ill. B. It will worsen people’s health.
C. It will burn your chest. D. It has nothing to do with people’s illness.
35. What can we learn from the text?
A. Running when suffering a cold can be harmful.
B. Running in cold weather makes people happier.
C. Lying in bed is what we all do when catching a cold.
D. Covering your mouth when running in cold weather frees you from a cold.

How to Survive a Disaster
Disasters can strike at any moment. If you learn the right survival skills and stay calm, you can make a big difference between life and death. Survival requires calmness, quick thinking, careful preparation and following basic safety rules. ___36___
Preparation is the first step toward survival. First, know all the emergency exits and safe places around you. Then, prepare an emergency kit (急救箱) consisting of necessary things like bottled water, canned food, a flashlight with extra batteries, a basic first-aid kit, a whistle (哨子) to call for help and a phone charger. ___37___ Remember to replace old food and water and add useful things based on your needs.
___38___ Fear is your biggest enemy in a disaster. It can make you lose your judgment and do dangerous things. If you are trapped, use a whistle or flashlight to signal for help instead of shouting loudly, which will only waste your energy and make you feel more tired.
After the disaster ends and everything seems quiet, don’t rush back to damaged buildings right away. ___39___ Go to a safe place that the government sets up and wait for their instructions instead. Listen to the radio or TV for updates on safety and rescue work, and wait until it’s announced safe to go back home.
In short, surviving a disaster depends on good preparation, calmness when danger comes and following safety rules strictly. By getting well-prepared and knowing what to do, you can protect yourself and your loved ones. ___40___ After all, being ready for the unexpected is the best way.

The summer break was drawing near. Leo and his brother Max burst with joy and kept talking about the trip at the thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The long-awaited day came at last. With the whole family all packed and ready they headed eagerly right away to their grandparents’ small house. On the way the brothers chatted excitedly about the fun times they’d shared with their grandparents before.
At last a cozy small blue house with a high white chimney came into sight gradually. Behind it lay the quiet forest holding their sweet good memories with Grandpa. They pulled up at the driveway where Grandma stood at the end waiting happily with a big smile.
Leo and Max each hugged Grandma tightly, then rushed quickly into the living room, yelling “Grandpa, we’re home!”
Seeing them walk in, Grandpa was over the moon. He tried to stand with all his strength from his chair but failed, a helpless look flashing across his face. Grandma explained his health had worsened fast lately and he might never stand up alone again. But Grandpa insisted stubbornly, “I can!” Still in his boyish way. Mum and the grandparents were delighted to reunite after such a long time, sitting together and chatting about what had happened recently.
Bored with the adults’ slow conversation, the brothers wandered into the green forest. Tall trees stretched high skyward, thick branches crossing overhead while young ones standing straight like brave guards. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell birds’ origins easily by their calls. Trees, birds, lizards, small bugs… How many happy moments they’d shared with him here before!
Worried Grandpa couldn’t stand up, Leo said “We need to cheer him up.” “Grandpa loves birds — let’s catch one for him?” Max suggested softly. “But he hates birds being caged!” Leo shook his head firmly.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Then a clever thought hit Leo suddenly.

(共4小题,每小题2.5分,满分10分)
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. A
根据第一段中“The harder you run, the more endorphins released, and the happier you are. Some studies show this endorphin rush allows people to continue running even when injured or sick.(你跑得越卖力,内啡肽就释放得越多,你就越快乐。一些研究表明,这种内啡肽的激增使人们即使受伤或生病也能继续跑步)”可知,由于跑步释放的内啡肽会让人感到快乐,由此可知,内啡肽的激增使受伤或生病也能继续跑步。故选C。
【33题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词前面的内容“Feel free to go running if your cold is “above the neck”. (如果你的感冒“在脖子以上”,你可以去跑步)”以及后文“if your sufferings are “below the neck”(如果你的病在“脖子以下”)”可知,此处指出如果感冒的症状在“在脖子以上”,则可以继续去跑步,但如果感冒所带来的症状在脖子以下,那么就应该暂停跑步。故此处应该表示医生建议“不要继续跑步”。故划线词与D选项“Continuing.(继续)”为同义词。故选D。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Some people think that running in cold temperatures will actually make them sick. But this isn’t really true. (有些人认为在低温下跑步会让他们生病。但事实并非如此)”可知,很多人误认为在低温下跑步会让人生病。故选A。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Keep in mind, if you have an infection(感染)in your chest or throat, running outside can indeed make things worse. But if you have a simple head cold, it would be fine to take that run, even if it’s cold outside.(请记住,如果你的胸部或喉咙感染了,在外面跑步确实会让情况变得更糟。但如果你只是得了轻微的感冒,即使外面很冷,也可以去跑步)”可知,在感冒的时候是否要跑步是分情况的,如果你的胸部或喉咙感染了,在外面跑步确实会让情况变得更糟。由此可知,感冒时跑步可能是有害的。故选A。

【答案】参考范文:
Then a clever thought hit Leo suddenly. “Why not make a cane out of a young tree?” Max thought it was a good idea. Having reached an agreement, the two brothers hurried back to their grandfather’s house for tools, and then raced to the woods. Among the trees, Max suggested selecting a straight one — free of knots to avoid scratching Grandpa’s hands. Leo nodded his head. They spent hours crafting a smooth-textured, perfectly sized cane, convinced that Grandpa would cherish it.
Filled with joy, the brothers presented it to Grandpa. As he took it, his hands trembled with delight. Leo voiced their hope that the cane would aid him in standing and exploring the woods alongside them. Grandpa smiled, determined to give it a try, not to disappoint his grandsons. Holding the cane, he stood up, mustering strength in his legs. All present were astonished and elated, tears welling up at the corners of Grandpa’s eyes. It was at the moment that the grandsons appreciated the power of family affection.
