Seba Stephens is only 10 years old, but he’s a very talented musician. He plays drums, bass, guitar and piano. Recently, he earned a professional certificate (证书) in music through the Berklee Online program at the famous Berklee College of Music.
Seba and his family live in Memphis, Tennessee — a place famous for music. He grew up with music all around, but he especially loved the drumming of Stewart Copeland from the band The Police.
Before he turned three, his parents asked him what he wanted for his birthday. “Drums!” he answered. His parents weren’t sure, but after seeing him play the drums at a local music store, they decided he was serious. They bought him a junior drum kit. It was a huge step. “He didn’t stop playing — ever,” said his dad, Everett.
In just a few months, his drum teacher reported that Seba was learning extremely quickly and needed a higher level of training. He was still four.
Seba’s parents encouraged him to explore music in other ways. Seba learned bass, guitar and piano. He faced challenges. “I couldn’t see over my drum set,” he said. He also had trouble finding a good bass that was small enough,
In 2020, Everett got special permission for Seba to join a summer music program at Berklee as an 8-year-old boy. Seba studied bass in an online program. To keep up, he had to practise up to 36 hours a week.
After the intense summer, Everett thought Seba might want a break. He was wrong. Instead, Seba asked his parents to home-school him so he could keep going to Berklee during the school year. His parents had to make some big changes to make the plan work, but they agreed.
Last May, Seba became the youngest person ever to receive a professional certificate from Berklee. The certificate is equal to about four college-level classes.
4. What is Stewart Copeland?
A. A teacher. B. A drummer. C. A pianist. D. A soldier.
5. How old was Seba Stephens when he got his first drum?
A. Three years old. B. Four years old.

The world has lost one of its brightest stars. British physicist Stephen Hawking dies on March 14, 2018, at the age of 76.
Hawking is probably the worlds most famous scientist after Albert Einstein. He is an expert on black holes and the Big Bang Theory. He has devoted his whole life to digging into the beginning (and the end) of the universe. His 1988 book A Brief History of Time, which contains his understanding of the universe, is one of the biggest-selling science books of all time.
“My goal is simple,” Hawking once said. “It is to completely understand the universe, why it is as it is and why it is there at all.”
Hawkings achievements are even greater if you think about his disability. When he was 21, Hawking caught a bad illness that slowly stopped him from moving or talking. For a period of time, he had no way to communicate except by blinking (眨眼). Later he sat on a wheelchair with a computer by his side. To communicate, he moved two fingers to control the computers mouse. He selected his words from the screen, which were then spoken by a voice synthesizer
“I have had the disease for most of my life,” Hawking once said. “Yet it has not stopped me from being successful at my work.”
Though Hawking was a disabled man, he made great achievements. He received many awards and prizes for his work during his lifetime. This included winning the Albert Einstein Award, which stands for the highest achievement in theoretical physics.
Despite the fact that hes no longer with us, his legacy will surely live on. As Sajid Javid, a UK government minister, put it, “A brief history on Earth; an eternity in the stars.”
8. What is the black holes and the Big Bang Theory about?
A. The physics. B. The stars. C. The universe. D. The time.
9. What does the underlined pronoun “it” in the third paragraph refer to?
A. The universe. B. The earth. C. The goal. D. The black hole.
10. According to the text, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Hawking received many awards and prizes except the Albert Einstein Award.
B. The illness kept him from moving and talking.
C. He communicated with others by speaking.
D. The illness stopped him from being successful.
11. What can we know about Hawking from Sajid Javids words?
A. The history of the earth is too short.
B. The stars in the universe are eternal.
C. His book A Brief History of Time is too short.
D. His spirit and achievements will live on forever.

Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but there is a problem: Everyone is wearing mask. What a hassle!
Now, tech companies have updated their software. Facial recognition technology can now identify people even if they are wearing a mask.
Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology (E&T) reported. What’s the secret? It’s all about your eyes.
Marios Savvides, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, US, studies facial recognition technology. “As we get older,” he said, “our faces change shape, but not the area around our eyes. It stays the same—even if we put on weight.”
Another company has also been working on this kind of software. Tech5 has AI that measures the shape of your face. It also scans your iris (the colored part of your eyes). Tech5 hopes to ignore all of the face below the nose.
Facial recognition software is about more than just unlocking your phone. It’s about public safety. Contact-free verification (验证) has become extremely important due to the COVID-19. More than that, facial recognition can be used to fight crime (犯罪). “It can detect crime suspects,” said Huang Lei, Hanwang’s president. Hanwang’s technology is used by police in high-security settings. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports. Huang admits one big weakness of this new technology: It fails when people wear both masks and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, but I am convinced that we can overcome the weakness in the future,” said Huang.
12. What does the underlined word “hassle” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. habit. B. rule. C. trouble. D. resource.
13. What makes facial recognition software able to identify people wearing masks?
A. The forehead. B. The facial expression.
C. The shape of face. D. The eye region.
14. What is Huang Lei’s attitude towards the facial recognition software?
A. Negative. B. Favorable. C. Opposed. D. Doubtful.
15. What can be inferred about the new technology from the last paragraph?
A. There is room for improvement in it. B. It cannot store key facial information.
C. It will lose popularity in the future. D. It won’t work if people wear glasses.

C 9. A 10. B 11. D

C 13. D 14. B 15. A

根据第一段前两句话“Facial recognition cameras are everywhere, including in your smartphone. Many people rely on this technology to unlock their phones, open doors or make quick payments, but there is a problem: Everyone is wearing mask.(面部识别摄像头无处不在,包括智能手机。许多人依靠这项技术解锁手机、开门或快速付款,但有一个问题:每个人都戴着口罩。)”可知,由于现在人人都带着口罩,所以人脸识别相对来说“更麻烦了”,所以划线单词hassle的意思,是“麻烦的”。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Beijing-based tech company Hanwang has announced a software which can correctly recognize 95 percent of people wearing masks, Engineering & Technology (E&T) reported. What’s the secret? It’s all about your eyes.(据工程与技术(E&T)报道,总部位于北京的科技公司汉旺(Hanwang)发布了一款软件,该软件可以正确识别95%戴面具的人。秘密是什么?都是因为你的眼睛。)”可知,是眼睛让在戴面具时也可识别面部。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段黄磊说的话“It can detect crime suspects,” said Huang Lei, Hanwang’s president. Hanwang’s technology is used by police in high-security settings. This means places like government buildings, subway stations and airports. Huang admits one big weakness of this new technology: It fails when people wear both masks and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, but I believe we can overcome the weakness in the future,” said Huang(“它可以发现犯罪嫌疑人,”汉旺总裁黄磊表示。
根据最后一段黄磊说的话“Huang admits one big weakness of this new technology: It fails when people wear both masks and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost, but I believe we can overcome the weakness in the future,” said Huang.(黄承认这项新技术的一大弱点:当人们同时戴口罩和太阳镜时,这项技术就失败了。黄说:“在这种情况下,所有关键的面部信息都会丢失,但我相信我们可以在未来克服这个弱点。”)”可推知,这项技术还需改善。故选A。
Future means a time that is not yet here. It can be a short time from now or a long time from now. Scientists think that many wonderful things may come true in our future life. ____16____
Are you wondering whether there’ll be televisions in the future? ____17____ Television screens (屏幕) probably will be large and flat, hanging on the wall or going across the four walls of a room. People on the screen will look as real as if they were right in the room with you.
____18____ What people may eat in the future will be man-made in factories from such surprising things as coal, limestone, air, and water. Worry about the taste? You may be wrong. The man-made food will be delicious and healthy because all the things that you need to live a long and healthy life will be put into it.
What about driving cars in the future? Well, a very small child probably will be able to drive a car. Computer systems will hold each car on the right road to get wherever the “driver” wants to go. ____19____ Computer controls will make all speeding cars miss each other or stop in time. Driving cars will be as safe as being at home.
____20____ Cities may have large domes (穹顶) over them to keep out snow, rain, or storms. When you plan a picnic in a park, you won’t have to worry about the weather. It will rain only when the “weather man” thinks it is necessary. In all other days you will be able to enjoy pleasant weather. The future should be a wonderful time to live. But the time you are living in now is also “a wonderful future” to the people who lived 100 years ago.
A. What about the food of the future?
B. In the future, life will be the same as we live today.
C. People will suffer from serious hunger in the future.
D. And it probably will be impossible for car accidents to happen.
E. Now let’s see what the wonders are that may appear in the future.
F. The future televisions will be totally different from what they are.
G. But maybe the most wonderful surprise in the future will be weather control.
E 17. F 18. A 19. D 20. G

根据上句“Scientists think that many wonderful things may come true in our future life.(科学家们认为在我们未来的生活中许多美好的事情可能会成为现实)”及下文介绍未来的样子可知,空处句子应起到承上启下的作用,应该说让我们来看一下未来会发生什么,E选项“Now let’s see what the wonders are that may appear in the future.(现在让我们看看未来可能出现的奇迹是什么。)”
根据上句“Are you wondering whether there’ll be televisions in the future?(你想知道将来会不会有电视吗?)”可知,此段说的是未来电视,空格处也应该是关于电视的,F选项“The future televisions will be totally different from what they are.(未来的电视机将与现在完全不同。)”
根据下文“What people may eat in the future will be man-made in factories from such surprising things as coal, limestone, air, and water.(将来人们吃的东西将是工厂用煤、石灰石、空气和水等令人惊讶的东西人工制造的)”可知,此段说的是未来食物,A选项“What about the food of the future?(未来的食物呢?)”
根据上文“What about driving cars in the future?(那未来开汽车呢?)”可知,本段的大意是未来驾驶,结合空处上文“Computer systems will hold each car on the right road to get wherever the “driver” wants to go.(计算机系统将使每辆车保持在正确的道路上,以到达“司机”想去的任何地方)”可知,空格处应该说未来驾驶的优点,D选项“And it probably will be impossible for car accidents to happen.(而且很可能不可能发生车祸。)”
根据下文“Cities may have large domes (穹顶) over them to keep out snow, rain, or storms.(城市可能会有巨大的圆顶来阻挡雪、雨或风暴)”可知,此段讲的是未来对天气的应对,空格处也应该讲对天气情况的应对,G选项“But maybe the most wonderful surprise in the future will be weather control.(但也许未来最美妙的惊喜将是天气控制。)”
