There must be few occasions when it would be really rude to refuse an invitation to hit someone you’ve just met with your fist! But I’m in one of those right now. I’m in a rehearsal room in a theatre with a group of actors, facing up to stage fighting director Kate Waters. She wants me to hit her with my fist. But fear not, this is all strictly pretend! Kate, known in the industry as Kombat Kate, is giving a lesson on how actors fight each other without getting hurt.
Already a passionate martial arts expert from childhood, Kate did drama at university, and one of her courses introduced her to stage fighting. When she made inquiries about the possibility of teaching it as a career, she was told about the register of stage fight directors and the qualifications she’d need to be accepted into it. It was no small order: as well as a certificate in advanced stage fighting, she would need a black belt in karate (空手道) and skill in fencing, a sport she’d never tried before. But she rose to the challenge and finally successfully became one of only two women on the official register.
Of course, a stage fight is just smoke and mirrors. In our lesson, Kate shows me how an actor will stand with his or her back to the audience ahead of a planned slap (拍). When the slap comes it makes contact not with the skin but with the air: the actor hits his chest or leg to make the sound of the slap.
In the rehearsal room, I can’t resist asking Kate how she thinks she would do in a real fight. Would she give her attacker a hard time? She laughs. “Oh, I’d be awful,” she says. “I only know how to pretend.” I can’t help thinking, however, that she’s just being rather humble.
24. Why does Kate ask the author to hit her?
A. To show actors stage fighting skills.
B. To teach actors to defend themselves.
C. To help actors rehearse an action scene.
D. To attract actors’ interest in martial arts.
25. What was a challenge Kate faced in becoming a stage fight director?
A. She could not find a female teacher. B. She had no prior experience in drama.
C. She had to master an unfamiliar sport. D. She had trouble obtaining a certificate.
26. What do the underlined words “smoke and mirrors” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. A difficult technique. B. A dangerous situation.
C. A well-planned lesson. D. A misleading performance.
27. What does the author imply about Kate’s real fighting ability?
A. She relies a lot on tricks. B. She may lack confidence in herself.
C. She might be better than she admits. D. She excels more at performing than fighting.
C
For fifty years scientists have been lowering microphones into the ocean and recording the songs of humpback whales. The result is a collection of more than two hundred thousand hours of sound — far more than any research team could ever listen to, one whale call at a time.
So a group of researchers in Australia tried something different: they asked a computer to do the listening. They fed thirty thousand hours of recordings into a machine-learning model and, instead of telling it what to look for, let it search for patterns by itself. The model returned twelve clear “call types”, each with a structure of its own. When human experts went through them, they found that eight had never been described in print.
The most interesting finding concerned rhythm. Whale calls, it turns out, are arranged in phrases that repeat, rather like the lines of a poem. Some phrases appeared five times more often in recordings made near the whales’ breeding grounds than in the areas where they feed, which suggests that they carry information about place.
Not everyone is convinced. Dr Helen Hall, who studies animal communication, welcomes the method but warns against reading too much into it. “We can now tell the calls apart,” she says, “but telling them apart is not the same as understanding them. A model may be picking up patterns that are neat for a computer and meaningless for a whale.”
The team is happy to be challenged. Next year its members plan to place microphones along the whales’ migration route and to follow the same groups of whales for several seasons. “If one call type turns up year after year, at the same time and in the same place, we will have good reason to think it carries information,” the team leader says. “Until then, we are still learning to listen.”
28. Why did the researchers turn to a computer model?
A. Their microphones could not record whale calls.
B. The recordings were too many for experts to listen to.
C. They wanted to prove earlier studies wrong.
D. They hoped to protect the whales’ feeding areas.
29. What was special about the team’s approach?
A. They told the model what to look for. B. They recorded the calls themselves.
C. They compared whale calls with bird songs. D. They let the model find patterns on its own.
30. What is Dr Hall’s attitude towards the finding?
A. Fully supportive. B. Cautious. C. Uninterested. D. Disappointed.
31. What will the team do next?
A. Publish a book on whale songs. B. Train more experts to listen to the calls.
C. Record the same whales over several seasons. D. Compare whales from different oceans.
D
Self-driving cars have long been backed by the widespread public hope that they will save lives by being involved in far fewer crashes, with far fewer injuries and deaths, than ordinary human-driven cars on public roads. Advocates often paint a future where traffic accidents almost disappear, as automated systems eliminate human errors like distracted driving and speeding. But so far, most direct comparisons between human drivers and automated vehicles have been deeply unfair, creating a misleadingly positive impression of self-driving safety.
Crash statistics for human-driven cars are gathered from all sorts of real-world driving situations and on all types of roads — in crowded city centers, on narrow country roads, in heavy rain, sudden snow and thick fog, at any hour of the day or night. However, most of the published data on self-driving cars’ safety have been recorded in mild weather and on well-marked highways, where the most important tasks are staying in the car’s own lane and not getting too close to the vehicle ahead. Automated cars are reliably good at these simple, repetitive tasks, but so are most careful human drivers.
It is true that self-driving cars don’t get tired, angry or frustrated after long hours on the road. But neither can they yet react to uncertain situations with the same skill or sharp anticipation as an attentive, experienced human driver. Nor do they possess the human-like foresight to spot and avoid hidden potential dangers far ahead. They largely drive from moment to moment, making split-second decisions based only on what their sensors happen to detect at that exact instant.
To judge whether automated driving truly saves lives, scientists insist that we must “compare apples with apples” — namely, measure automated cars only in the situations in which they are actually driven. If robot cars are tested mostly on easy highways, their excellent safety records tell us little about how they would handle busy city streets full of pedestrians, delivery bikes and sudden unexpected incidents. Until such fair and demanding comparisons are widely made, the promise of much safer roads remains just that — a promise, not yet a fully proven fact.
32. Why does the author say most comparisons between human drivers and automated cars are “unfair”?
A. Human-driven cars cause more injuries and deaths.
B. Automated cars are tested under far easier conditions.
C. Human drivers make more mistakes than automated cars.
D. Automated cars are more expensive than human-driven ones.
33. What can we infer about self-driving cars from paragraph 3?
A. They have been widely used on all types of roads.
B. They can avoid all potential dangers with their sensors.
C. They are already safer than human drivers in every situation.
D. They may fail to address unpredictable situations as well as humans.
34. According to the text, the author’s attitude toward the future application of self-driving technology can be described as ________.
A. subjective B. objective C. opposed D. indifferent
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Autonomous cars have proven suitable for various road conditions.
B. Scientists have worked out perfect standards for self-driving car tests.
C. Human drivers will soon be completely replaced by self-driving cars.
D. The safety promise of self-driving cars lacks fair and sufficient proof.
You may have caught yourself talking to yourself, whether it’s reminding yourself about tasks or processing your emotions out loud. This simple habit often feels comforting and can be incredibly useful. After all, sometimes your own voice is your biggest motivator.
Why People Talk to Themselves
Talking to yourself might seem strange. 36 It’s more than perfectly normal — in fact, it can serve as a powerful mental strategy.
37 It can operate like a thermostat (恒温器), influencing the temperature of your emotions. External self-talk can also help you move towards your goals, give yourself feedback, and assist with analyzing challenging tasks. Some people also use it to prepare what they want to say ahead of time.
The Benefits of Talking to Yourself
38 One benefit of external self-talk is that it can improve the relationship you have with yourself. Instead of asking others for answers all the time, talking to yourself helps you hear what you really want and make your own choices. Talking to yourself is a way to admit you are in charge as an adult. Trusting yourself is a key factor for building self-worth and tuning out other noises.
Create space for curiosity. Talking to yourself creates a suitable environment for self-inquiry. When you communicate with yourself with curiosity, you will become more aware of and understand yourself clearly. 39 For example, you can ask yourself some questions to gain a deeper understanding of your inner world, or you can try a journaling method — write down your thoughts and answers, then read those answers out loud.
So remember, even if talking to yourself feels a little odd, it comes with big benefits. Start small and ask yourself how you feel and why, and don’t be afraid to voice your thoughts out loud. 40
A. Boost self-worth.
B. Regulate emotions.
C. However, there are a variety of reasons why people do it.
D. Self-inquiry requires quite complex steps every now and then.
E. In fact, this way of self-inquiry can be very simple.
F. This powerful practice could make a big difference in your mental wellness.
G. Talking to yourself isn’t just common chatter — it’s a practical technique.

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

Dear Robert,
How is everything going? I am Wang Lin, a high school student and also one of your fans. I’m deeply impressed by your wonderful performance in the interview. So fluent is your oral English that you have really set a good example for the young generation.
Therefore, I wonder if you could share some effective approaches with me to improving spoken English as well as building up self-confidence when communicating with foreigners. I would be more than grateful/I would appreciate it if you could offer some constructive suggestions.
Looking forward to your early reply/hearing from you as soon as possible.
Yours, Wanglin
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.
根据About the Program部分“Join our weekend efforts to protect marine life by removing plastic waste from Sunshine Beach. (加入我们周末的行动,清理阳光海滩的塑料垃圾,以此保护海洋生物。)”可知,该海岸清理项目的首要目标是保护沿海野生动物。
22. D细节理解题。根据Requirements部分“Age: Open to volunteers aged 12+. Minors require parental consent forms. (年龄:面向12岁及以上志愿者开放。未成年人需要家长同意书。)” 可知,14岁属于未成年人,参与前必须提供家长同意书。
23. B细节理解题。根据Schedule & Location部分“Note: Groups larger than 6 must email cleanup@sunshine.org 3 days in advance.
故选A。
解析:最后一段Kate说自己真实打斗能力“会很糟糕”“只会假装”,但作者说“I can’t help thinking, however, that she’s just being rather humble”,即作者认为她只是谦虚,暗示她实际打斗能力可能比她承认的更好。
第一段说录音已超过二十万小时,“far more than any research team could ever listen to”,因此团队改让计算机来“听”。
第二段 “instead of telling it what to look for, let it search for patterns by itself”,强调“让模型自己找规律”。
霍尔博士 “welcomes the method but warns against reading too much into it”,并指出“分清叫声”不等于“理解叫声”,态度是认可方法但保持审慎。
末段 “place microphones along the whales’ migration route and ... follow the same groups of whales for several seasons”。
第二段“Crash statistics … to the vehicle ahead.
根据第三段中“But neither can they yet…to detect at that exact instant.
36.C 前文“Talking to yourself might seem strange. (自言自语或许看起来很怪异。)”提出人们对自言自语的刻板印象,后文“It’s more than perfectly normal — in fact, it can serve as a powerful mental strategy. (这再正常不过了,事实上,它可以作为一种强大的心理策略。)”转折说明自言自语是正常且有用的,C项“However, there are a variety of reasons why people do it. (然而,人们这么做存在各种各样的原因。)”前后形成转折,衔接怪异的表象与下文对该行为的解读,符合语境。
37. B后文“It can operate like a thermostat (恒温器), influencing … to say ahead of time. (它就像恒温器一样运作,影响你情绪的“温度”。出声自言自语还能帮助你朝着目标前进、给自己反馈,并协助分析具有挑战性的任务。有些人还用它来提前准备自己想要说的话。)”核心讲述自言自语调节情绪的作用,B项“Regulate emotions. (调节情绪。)”作为本段小标题,总领整段内容,符合语境。
38. A由后文“One benefit of external … and tuning out other noises. (出声自言自语的一大好处是改善你和自己的相处模式。不必总向别人寻求答案,自言自语能帮你认清内心真实诉求、自主做决定。自言自语是一种承认自己作为成年人掌控局面的方式。信任自己是建立自我价值和屏蔽外界噪音的关键因素)”可知,本段围绕提升自我价值展开,A项“Boost self-worth. (提升自我价值。)”符合语境。
39. E前文“When you communicate with …yourself clearly. (带着好奇和自己对话,你会更清醒地认知、了解自己。)”说明自我探寻的作用,后文“For example, you can ask yourself… then read those answers out loud. (例如,你可以问自己一些问题,以更深入地了解自己的内心世界,或者尝试写日记的方法——写下你的想法和答案,然后大声读出那些答案。)”列举简单易操作的自我探寻方式,E项“In fact, this way of self-inquiry can be very simple. (事实上,这种自我探寻的方式可以十分简单。)”衔接上文,引出后文简易实操案例,符合语境。
40. F前文“So remember, even if … voice your thoughts out loud. (所以请记住,即使自言自语感觉有点奇怪,它也带来了巨大的好处。从小事做起,问问自己的感受和原因,不要害怕大声说出自己的想法。)”总结全文并给出实操建议, F项“This powerful practice could make a big difference in your mental wellness. (这种有效的方式会对你的心理健康产生很大积极影响。)”收束全文,升华价值,符合语境。

Text 1 M: Sorry, Kelly, I’m late. I was on the phone for an hour.
W: Who are you talking to, Stephen?
M: Sam, an old friend from college.
Text 2 W: I hope you liked the book I lent you. I wasn’t sure if you’d be interested.
M: I had the same doubt at first. But once I started, I simply couldn’t put it down.
Text 3 W: Do you remember when we were kids?
M: Yes. You always took my toys and laughed at me.
W: Well, I really shouldn’t have brought this up.
Text 4 M: Hurry up with your food, Sally. They say there’s a hurricane coming. We’d better get home before that.
W: Okay, I’m done. Let’s get back to the car. Could you carry these shopping bags?
Text 5 M: Don’t worry, it’s just 3:20. We still have a little time.
W: I am afraid that your watch is 20 minutes slow. The film will begin in 10 minutes.
Text 6 M: I’m thinking about getting a motorcycle.
W: Are you crazy? Drop the idea.
M: I’ll be careful and I can take you for a ride on my motorcycle.
W: Nice try, but I’m not going to say yes anytime soon.
M: Why? What’s the problem? I’ve saved enough money.
W: But I would be worried all the time.
M: Well, I’ll come up with a better reason next time.
Text 7 W: Hey, I heard Mona’s authentic works are on display at DAJI art museum. Did you get a chance to go?
M: I went last weekend with some of our classmates. Absolutely mind-blowing.
W: Oh yeah, tell me everything.
M: I mean I’m no art expert but seeing them in person was wild. It is nothing like seeing them in a textbook. The colors and details were just unreal. There is so much going on but so little clear detail. You can totally tell how much hard work went into them.
W: Wow. Now I really want to go.
M: And you know what? It wasn’t crowded, so the whole experience was superb.
W: Amazing. Why not recommend it in our art class?
Text 8 W: Stan, do you have a minute?
M: Oh, hi, Cathy, sure. What’s up?

M: I see what you mean. Someone has to speak to him about it.
W: We really can’t ask him to stop having clients come in, can we?
M: No, of course not. But you are not able to do your work and neither am I. I imagine it’s the same for the other colleagues in the office.
W: Hmm. Could we arrange a meeting room for him? You know, there’s a room down the hall.

W: Well, it looks good on you, but you don’t seem to wear this style very often.
M: I know. I tried on about 20. Actually, this one isn’t really what I wanted.
W: Why did you buy it then?
M: The salesman sold it to me before I realized what had happened. He just never stopped talking and he told me some stories about the latest fashion and special discounts. Before I could say anything, he’d wrapped it up and taken my money.
W: Well, it doesn’t look too bad.
M: But I went out to get a blue sweater with a V-neck and short sleeves, and I came home with a brown one with a high neck and long sleeves.
W: You must be easily taken in; you’ve got to learn to stand up to these high-pressure salesmen. They’ll sell you all sorts of things you don't want if you don’t watch out.
M: Next time I’ll send my wife in. She won’t fall for their fancy words easily.
Text 10 M: The 2026 World Cup match ball TRIONDA has three colors representing the host countries: US, Mexico and Canada. It is made in Shenzhen, China. You might think the ball is just an ordinary football, right? It’s actually special, packed with high-tech features you’d never expect. First, it has a smart sensor that records the ball’s movement data in real time so fast decisions can be made and even the tiniest offside or handball won’t escape notice. It requires 90 minutes of charging before each use to power its smart functions. Second, designers created a new surface that maintains stability at high speeds. Even when kicked with great force, the ball follows a smooth, accurate path. This isn’t just a football; it’s a perfect example of how technology transforms the game.
