Millie: I think tai chi is an important part of Chinese culture.

Millie: Yes. It's a series of slow, gentle movements. You need to control your breathing while practising it. It's good for your body and mind.

Finding my place in a new country

 

What if you have to move far away from your home, and you can't even speak the language there? That's what happened to me when I was seven. I had to say goodbye to my friends and leave everything familiar behind. There were so many tears and worries at first.

 

I still remember my first days at school in Rome, Italy. I felt very uneasy because I couldn't speak Italian, and I didn't know anyone. Luckily, my classmates were very kind. They showed me around and helped me learn the language. Once I came out of my shell, there were new challenges. Italians are always direct, and they usually express their opinions very strongly. Sometimes they spoke in a loud voice and I thought they were angry at me. This was very different from the UK.

 

Now I've accepted those differences. I've got used to life here, and I'm in love with Rome. It's a wonderful city to explore and there are so many exciting things to do. I love going for a walk in the street and stopping by a coffee shop or pizza restaurant. I love going to museums and admiring some of the world's finest artworks. And I also love spending time in the local square with my friends. Rome, the place I used to be so afraid of, now feels like home.

 

Moving to a different city or country can be lonely, but it's also exciting to try new things. If you're brave and open‑minded, you'll have a wonderful time. You'll also learn to understand and respect others who are different from you. Learning about different cultures will make your life more interesting and meaningful.

Sometimes we use it to replace the real subject or object in a sentence. We introduce the real subject or object later in the sentence.

 

Grace: I find it difficult to move to a new country, and it took me a long time to get used to the new life. But I feel quite at home in Italy now. I have lots of friends and it is kind of them to teach me Italian. Next week, I will go to Venice with some Italian friends. It is well known that Venice was built on water. It is common to go on boat rides and enjoy the views of the old buildings from the water.

Culture:

We watched a Shanghai opera. It was very exciting. The actors and actresses did a wonderful job.

Weather:

It is well known that the winter in Shanghai is wet and cold, but I did not notice this when I arrived here. It is sunny today. I find it nice to walk around the city.

People:

The people here are very helpful. It is kind of them to show us the way and it is interesting to talk to them about their lives.

Transport: It does not take much time to get used to the transport in Shanghai. The city has a great public transport system, so it is convenient for us to get around.
