How to Read Codes on Canned Foods
While there is no standard marking system for canned foods, many companies use similar codes to track their products. Learning to understand the most common date codes helps you make sure your canned foods stay fresh and safe to eat. Some canned foods have a clear “use by” date printed on the can or its label. For those without such a date, you can usually find a coded date on the top or bottom of the can and decode it as follows. Step 1 — Check the first character
Check the first number or letter in the code. Numbers 1 to 9 often stand for the months from January to September in order. On many cans, the letter O usually means October, N stands for November, and D represents December. Step 2 — Try the alphabetical system
Simply match letters A to L with the months January through December in alphabetical order. Some companies use this way of coding to mark months. You need to be careful when decoding these marks if you want to confirm the exact month. D may mean April or December, depending on the coding system the producer uses. Step 3 — Read the day and year
Work out the numbers to find the specific date and year. Many companies use two digits after the first character in the code for the day, and one digit for the year. The digit for the year is normally the last digit of that year. For example, the year mark for 2011 would be 1. Step 4 — Try a Julian date
Find the corresponding (相应的) Julian date from the code if the numbers cannot be read as month, day and year. A Julian date shows which day it is in a whole year. For example, Jan. 1 would be 1 and Dec. 31 would be 365 if a Julian date is used.
What do we know about the coding systems in Step 1 and Step 2?
A.They use numbers for days. B.Months are coded randomly.
C.Letters are used to mark months. D.They follow the same coding rules.
22.What number represents Feb. 10 if a Julian date is used?
A.10. B.41. C.102. D.210.
23.Which section of a magazine is this text probably taken from?
A.Everyday Health. B.Green Life.
C.Money Smart. D.Home Improvement.
(本题10分)On my first weekend abroad, I attended a dinner party with my host family to celebrate the New Year. It was everything I had imagined a French dinner party would be — multiple courses, a variety of cheeses, bottles of champagne, and slices of fresh bread. Then, at the end of the meal, the host called out. “Okay, everyone, get under the table!”
What? An earthquake broke out? I watched as the children came running into the dining room and hid under the table. As it turns out, in the days after the New Year, the French celebrate with the galette des rois, or the “king cake”, a special cake with its own set of traditions. There is a small toy hidden inside the cake, and whoever finds it in their serving is the winner. Before it is sliced, all the children hide under the table so that they cannot see who will get the slice with the toy.
I’ve learned that many French traditions focus on food, and often they’ve taken me by surprise! From time to time, I’ve experienced a sense of culture shock, the feeling of confusion in a new country when you’re adjusting to things that maybe unfamiliar to you. Thankfully, I haven’t run into anything too difficult to manage. Before leaving for France, I learned strategies from the International Programs Office, a facility which helps prepare students to deal with these kinds of ups and downs.
They explained the phenomenon with a line graph to illustrate the highs and lows of the experience. You may experience a “honeymoon” phase, where you find everything new and exciting or even better than your home country. You may also experience low points, where all these little differences may seem frustrating and overwhelming.
I encountered a new fun, food-related cultural difference while in France. For example, the French eat with both wrists resting on the table, while many Americans tend to keep their left hands in their laps. I hadn’t even noticed the difference until my five-year-old host brother pointed it out! Moreover, on formal occasions, people tend to straighten their back. And it is also common to use bread as a utensil (用具), holding it in your hand like a knife, or using it to clean up the plate at the end of the meal. Finally, I love hearing “Bon Appétit!” (Good appetite!) before eating, whether I am seated at the table with my host family, or just grabbing a coffee at a nearby café!
What was the author’s original expectation of a French dinner?
A.A simple but efficient take-out. B.A hearty feast with no drinks.
C.An exciting occasion with table games. D.A fine meal with a series of dishes.
What can be learned from the text about the International Programs Office?
A.Its advice is usually of little use in real situations.
B.Its training can partly prepare students for cultural shocks.
C.It mainly focuses on teaching students the French language.
D.It guarantees international students have no difficulties abroad.
What did the author find about French dining customs in the last paragraph?
A.Frenchmen eat with their left hands resting in their laps.
B.French diners are often greeted with pre-eating blessings.
C.French people keep straightening up when dining with friends.
D.French kids are required to clean up the plates at the end of the meal.
What’s the tone of the author when describing his experiences in France?
A.Anxious and fearful. B.Ironic and critical.
C.Unconcerned and indifferent. D.Curious and light-hearted.
In countries where sporting success carries national prestige, young athletes may learn early that winning is the clearest measure of progress. Canada’s elite ice-hockey (冰球) system has certainly produced world-class players. Yet a 2026 study suggests that the very culture that helps identify and push talented teenagers may also narrow the meaning of development too far.
Researchers interviewed six coaches known for helping athletes succeed both on and off the ice. Their argument was not that competitive standards should be lowered. Rather, they questioned the assumption that technical skill, selection and victories must compete with character, leadership and psychological well-being for attention. Several believed the opposite: players who learn to communicate, cooperate and handle pressure may ultimately become stronger athletes as well as more capable adults.
The difficulty is that the incentives (激励制度) surrounding teenage hockey often point in another direction. As players approach eligibility (资格赛) for major junior drafts, immediate results become highly visible to families, coaches and scouts. Training intensifies (强度加大), opportunities feel scarce, and a short period of poor performance can seem costly. Under those conditions, a victory-first mentality can appear reasonable. Supporters might argue that elite sport is, by definition, demanding, and that shielding promising players from pressure could leave them unprepared for professional competition.
However, the coaches in the study warned that pressure can become self-defeating when it produces excessive training, burnout or unhealthy team environments. They also rejected the idea that organizations must choose between producing better people and producing better players. The more useful question, they suggested, is what kind of culture allows both goals to reinforce each other. That would require more than a few inspirational talks. Clear coaching principles, consistent expectations, stronger support networks and greater parental involvement may all be necessary, especially before competitive pressures rise significantly in the mid-teen years.
The study is small and based on interviews rather than long-term performance data, so it cannot prove that it will guarantee more victories. Still, it raises a difficult sporting question: if a system creates champions but damages some of the young people passing through it, should success be measured only by who reaches the top?
What view do some coaches question?
A.Young athletes are becoming less ambitious.
B.Athletic training should come before education.
C.Sporting excellence conflicts with personal growth.
D.Personal qualities and athletic skills develop together.
29.What is the meaning of the underlined word “mentality”?
A.Habit. B.Rule. C.Capacity. D.Attitude.
30.What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A.Too much training often causes burnout.
B.Competitive pressure may harm team culture.
C.Player development depends mainly on team culture.
D.Sporting success and personal growth can be combined.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.How Does Pressure Shape Young Hockey Players?
B.Why Does Winning Matter in the Youth Hockey?
C.What Makes a Young Hockey Player Successful?
D.How Can Hockey Develop Better Young Players?
Cinco de Mayo is probably the holiday most often celebrated that no one understands.
Literally (根据字面意思) “Fifth of May”, Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. In 1861, France sent a big army to invade Mexico, as they wanted to collect some war debts. The French army was much larger, better trained and equipped than the Mexicans struggling to defend (保卫) the road to Mexico City. The French army reached Puebla, where the Mexicans won a huge victory. The victory was shortlived, as the French army regrouped and continued, and eventually took Mexico City, but the joy of an unlikely victory against France is remembered every May fifth.
Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, because it was on that day in 1810 that Miguel Hidalgo invited his people to take up arms and join him in fighting against Spanish rulers. Independence Day is a much more important holiday in Mexico. For some reason, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the United States of America, by Mexicans and Americans alike, than it is in Mexico. One theory for why it is more popular in the USA is that at one time, it was celebrated in all of Mexico and by Mexicans living in former Mexican areas such as Texas and California. It was ignored in Mexico after a while but still celebrated in the north of the border, which never got out of the habit of remembering the famous battle.
In Puebla and in many American cities with large Mexican populations, there are parades, dancing and festivals. Traditional Mexican food is often served or sold. Mariachi (街头音乐) bands fill town squares, and a lot of beers are served. It’s a fun holiday, really more about celebrating the Mexican way of life than about remembering the battle which happened 157 years ago. In the USA, schoolchildren decorate their classrooms and try their hand at cooking some basic Mexican food. All over the world, Mexican restaurants bring in mariachi bands and offer specials for what’s almost certain to be a packed house.
Why do more Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
A.Some American areas once belonged to Mexico.
B.Americans are influenced by Mexican culture.
C.Mexicans don’t form the habit of having a holiday.
D.Many Mexicans value Independence Day.
How can schoolchildren celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
A.By performing music at restaurants.
B.By trying making some Mexican food.
C.By turning the classroom into a battlefield.
D.By offering special gifts to their teachers.
By celebrating Cinco de Mayo, people mainly show ________.
A.where the history is honored most
B.what special customs they have
C.how Mexicans gained independence
D.who should be remembered forever
According to the passage, people celebrate Cinco de Mayo because Mexicans ________.

(本题12.5分)I’m an American. This was my second Spring Festival in Qingdao and my fifth visit overall. I already knew which relative would host the dinner on which evening. I knew the rhythm (节奏) of the meals, the predictable (可预测的) laughter at familiar stories. And yet, that predictability is precisely the point.
What struck me most was not how different the Spring Festival was from holidays I had known before, but how similar it felt — the desire to return home, the joy of shared meals and the simple power of being together. They belong to all of humanity.
We choose different dates on the calendar. We cook different dishes. We tell different stories. But there is something universal: a longing to pause the rush of ordinary life and hold one another a little closer. In Qingdao, surrounded by my wife’s family, I did not feel like an outsider observing a foreign tradition. That was recognition.
I realize that our holidays, however different in form, are united in purpose. I also realize that the world, for all its complexity, still moves to the same quiet rhythm of family and belonging. If there is something truly extraordinary about the Spring Festival, it is its scale or history.
I hope more people have the opportunity to experience the Spring Festival in China, whether traveling independently or, if they are fortunate, welcomed into a family home. Because the truest cultural exchange is not about difference at all, but about the quiet revelation (发现) that we are, in the ways that matter most, beautifully the same.
A.There were few surprises left for me
B.I felt something far more meaningful
C.More importantly, it is its familiarity
D.Everything around me sounded quite strange
E.They will definitely receive congratulations from the family home
F.Not simply to see something different, but to discover something shared
G.These feelings are not unique to the Chinese, Americans, or any particular people

Like many exchange students at my school, I arrived with stereotypes (刻板印象) about Chinese traditions. I firmly believed that red envelopes, known as hongbao, were merely a shallow custom of giving money to children. Living with my host family, the Lis, I kept a clear distance, thinking our cultural gaps were too wide to bridge.
One week before the Lunar New Year, Mrs. Li invited me to join their family shopping. I tagged along out of politeness, barely paying attention as she picked red paper and candies from the shelf. On New Year’s Eve, the family gathered for a feast of dumplings and sweet rice cakes. After dinner, every child received a red envelope. Watching them unwrap their packets, I remembered those stockings by our fireplace back home. We filled them with treats and little gifts, each carrying a wish for happiness. But here, how could money be put directly into a paper bag as a gift? When Mrs. Li walked toward me with an identical red packet, I felt confused and awkward.
I waved my hands and refused, explaining that I was not a child and should not accept money. Accepting cash would be impolite, even greedy. Mrs. Li smiled softly and placed the envelope into my palm despite my refusal. She explained that the red stood for good luck and safety, and the money carried their wish for me to have a smooth, happy life. It was their way of welcoming me as family, not a simple cash gift.
I stared at the red envelope, the golden “Fu” shining under the warm lamp. Inside were several new banknotes and a handwritten note: “May every distant traveler feel warm in our home.” That night, I sat alone on the balcony, rethinking my shallow judgments. The note echoed in my mind. I wanted to say something back, but words failed me — a simple “thank you” was never enough.

【答案】21.C 22.B 23.A
Step 1 — Check the first character中的“Numbers 1 to 9 often stand for the months from January to September in order. On many cans, the letter O usually means October, N stands for November, and D represents December.(数字 1 到 9 通常依次代表一月至九月。在很多罐头上面,字母 O 通常代表十月,N 代表十一月,D 代表十二月。)”以及Step 2 — Try the alphabetical system中的“Simply match letters A to L with the months January through December in alphabetical order. Some companies use this way of coding to mark months.(简单地将字母 A 到 L 按照字母顺序对应一月到十二月。一些公司使用这种编码方式标记月份。)”可知,步骤一和步骤二均会使用字母来标记月份。
22.细节理解题。根据Step 4中的“Find the corresponding Julian date from the code if the numbers cannot be read as month, day and year. A Julian date shows which day it is in a whole year. For example, Jan. 1 would be 1 and Dec. 31 would be 365 if a Julian date is used.(如果数字不能读取为月、日和年,请从代码中查找相应的儒略日期。

根据第一段中“It was everything I had imagined a French dinner party would be — multiple courses, a variety of cheeses, bottles of champagne, and slices of fresh bread.(这是我所想象的法国晚宴的一切——多种菜肴、各种奶酪、一瓶瓶香槟和几片新鲜面包)”可知,作者最初期待的法国晚宴是一顿有多道菜的精美晚餐。故选D项。
根据第三段中“Before leaving for France, I learned strategies from the International Programs Office, a facility which helps prepare students to deal with these kinds of ups and downs. (在去法国之前,我从国际项目办公室学习了一些策略,这是一个帮助学生应对这些起伏的机构)”可知,International Programs Office能在一定程度上帮助学生应对文化冲击。故选B项。
26.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Finally, I love hearing “Bon Appétit!” (Good appetite!) before eating, whether I am seated at the table with my host family, or just grabbing a coffee at a nearby café!( 最后,我喜欢听到那句“Bon Appétit!(祝你好胃口!)”在吃饭之前,不管我是和寄宿家庭坐在一起,还是在附近的咖啡馆喝杯咖啡!)”可知,法国人用餐前常会收到用餐祝福。故选B项。
27.推理判断题。根据第三段中“I’ve learned that many French traditions focus on food, and often they’ve taken me by surprise! From time to time, I’ve experienced a sense of culture shock, the feeling of confusion in a new country when you’ re adjusting to things that maybe unfamiliar to you. Thankfully, I haven’t run into anything too difficult to manage.(我了解到许多法国传统注重食物,它们经常让我大吃一惊!时不时地,我经历过一种文化冲击的感觉,当你在一个新的国家适应你不熟悉的事物时,你会感到困惑。谢天谢地,我还没有遇到任何难以管理的事情)”以及最后一段中“I encountered a new fun, food-related cultural difference while in France.(在法国期间,我遇到了一种新的有趣的、与食物有关的文化差异)”和“Finally, I love hearing “Bon Appétit!”(最后,我喜欢听到那句“Bon Appétit!(祝你好胃口!)”)”
根据第二段“They questioned the assumption that technical skill, selection and victories must compete with character, leadership and psychological well-being for attention.(他们质疑这样一种假设:技术、选拔和胜利必须与品格、领导力和心理健康争夺关注)”可知,一些教练质疑的是“竞技卓越与个人成长彼此冲突”这一看法。
根据上文“The difficulty is that the incentives (激励制度) surrounding teenage hockey often point in another direction. As players approach eligibility (资格赛) for major junior drafts, immediate results become highly visible to families, coaches and scouts. Training intensifies (强度加大), opportunities feel scarce, and a short period of poor performance can seem costly.(问题在于,青少年冰球的激励机制往往指向另一个方向。
根据第四段“However, the coaches in the study warned that pressure can become self-defeating when it produces excessive training, burnout or unhealthy team environments. They also rejected the idea that organizations must choose between producing better people and producing better players. The more useful question, they suggested, is what kind of culture allows both goals to reinforce each other. That would require more than a few inspirational talks. Clear coaching principles, consistent expectations, stronger support networks and greater parental involvement may all be necessary, especially before competitive pressures rise significantly in the mid-teen years.(然而,研究中的教练们警告称,当压力导致过度训练、倦怠或不健康的团队环境时,这种压力反而可能适得其反。他们还否定了组织必须在培养更优秀的人才和培养更优秀的球员之间做出选择的观点。他们认为,更有用的问题是:什么样的文化能让这两个目标相互促进?这需要的不仅仅是几次鼓舞人心的讲话。清晰的教练原则、一致的期望、更强的支持网络以及更广泛的家长参与,都可能是必要的,尤其是在青少年中期竞争压力显著上升之前)”可知,本段核心是竞技成功与个人成长可以结合。
31.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Still, it raises a difficult sporting question: if a system creates champions but damages some of the young people passing through it, should success be measured only by who reaches the top?(然而,这引发了一个棘手的体育问题:如果一个体系造就了冠军,却损害了一些途经其中的年轻人,那么成功是否只能以谁登上顶峰来衡量?)”
A.paid off their war debts
B.succeeded in defending Mexico City
C.gained independence from Spanish
D.defeated the French army in Puebla
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.B 35.D
根据第三段中“One theory for why it is more popular in the USA is that at one time, it was celebrated in all of Mexico and by Mexicans living in former Mexican areas such as Texas and California. (为什么它在美国更受欢迎的一个理论是,有一段时间,整个墨西哥以及生活在德克萨斯州和加利福尼亚州等前墨西哥地区的墨西哥人都会庆祝这个节日。)”可知,更多的美国人庆祝Cinco de Mayo是因为美国的德克萨斯州和加利福尼亚州等地区之前属于墨西哥,那里的墨西哥人会庆祝这个节日,即因为一些美国地区曾经属于墨西哥。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“In the USA, schoolchildren decorate their classrooms and try their hand at cooking some basic Mexican food. (在美国,学生们装饰他们的教室,并尝试自己做一些基本的墨西哥食物。)”可知,学生们可以通过尝试做一些墨西哥食物来庆祝这个节日。故选B项。
34.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“It’s a fun holiday, really more about celebrating the Mexican way of life than about remembering the battle which happened 157 years ago. (这是一个有趣的节日,更多的是庆祝墨西哥人的生活方式,而不是纪念157年前发生的那场战争。)”可知,人们在这个节日更多的是庆祝墨西哥人的生活方式,也就是展示他们特殊的风俗习惯。故选B项。
35.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Literally (根据字面意思) “Fifth of May”, Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. (字面意思是“五月五日”,Cinco de Mayo是墨西哥的节日,庆祝1862年5月5日发生的普埃布拉战役。)”和“The French army reached Puebla, where the Mexicans won a huge victory. The victory was shortlived, as the French army regrouped and continued, and eventually took Mexico City, but the joy of an unlikely victory against France is remembered every May fifth. (本题12.5分)I’m an American. This was my second Spring Festival in Qingdao and my fifth visit overall. 36(2.5分) .

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The next morning, an idea struck me: prepare a gift for the Lis.

Their joy moved me to share the warmth with other students like me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The next morning, an idea struck me: prepare a gift for the Lis. I recalled how my family hides small notes in stockings at Christmas, so I wrote cards for each family member, expressing my gratitude for their kindness. I also bought a box of chocolate from the store, wrapping it in red paper to match the festive spirit. When I handed them the gifts, Mrs. Li’s eyes lit up with surprise. She hugged me tightly, saying the cards meant more than any material gift.
Their joy moved me to share the warmth with other students like me. I gathered several exchange students on campus and told them my story. We immediately decided to make red envelopes together, writing our own blessings inside for each other. Some of us even called our host families to say thank you. That night, I realized that true cultural exchange is not about judging differences, but about opening our hearts to understand and share. The red envelope had taught me a lesson I would never forget.
