Build a bee hotel using a glass jar to provide a safe nesting place for solitary bees. This project helps kids learn about bee habitats, the importance of pollinators (传花粉者), and biodiversity.Materials Needed Clean glass jar (mason jar or similar), paper, scissors, string or wire, and tape (optional).Steps 1. Prepare your paper tubes: Cut and roll your paper into tubes to a length slightly shorter than the height of the glass jar. Ensure the ends are smooth and open. The bees will go into these tubes, so the tubes should be about half an inch in width. 2. Fill the jar: Pack paper tubes tightly into the jar, making sure they fit tightly and do not fall out. The tubes should be arranged so that the open ends face outward. 3. Hang the bee hotel: Attach string or wire around the neck of the jar, forming a loop (圈) for hanging. Choose a location that is sheltered from heavy rain and direct wind but receives plenty of sunlight, such as under the eaves of a building or on a tree branch. 4. Monitor and maintain: Check the bee hotel regularly to ensure it remains undamaged and clean. Replace any damaged or blocked tube as needed.Science Concepts Bee habitats: Learn about the natural nesting preferences of solitary bees and how creating suitable habitats can support their populations. Pollination: Understand the crucial role bees play in pollination and maintaining biodiversity in ecosystems. Conservation: Explore the importance of conserving pollinator species and promoting biodiversity through small-scale interventions like building bee hotels. Ecology: Gain insights into the interactions between living organisms and their environment, emphasizing the interconnectedness of ecosystems. 21.(2.5分)Who is this project intended for? A.Young learners. B.Urban planners. C.Experienced farmers. D.Professional ecologists. 22.(2.5分)What can we infer about the paper tubes used in building a bee hotel? A.They must be completely closed at one end. B.They need to be replaced on a weekly basis. C.Their width is less important than their length. D.Their openings should stay uncovered and accessible. 23.(2.5分)What is a key ecological insight children can gain from the project? A.The value of teamwork among insects. B.The harm caused by chemical pollution. C.The link between species and surroundings. D.The method of picking artificial nests for bees. (本题10分)Located in the rolling hills and endless stretches of farmland just beyond the village of Millbrook lies a peaceful habitat for more than 80 species of wildlife from around the world. Truly one of a kind, the Trevor Zoo at Millbrook School is the only zoo in the nation accredited (认证) by Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and run by a high school. This is where Alan Tousignant began his career in zoology and conservation (保护). Tousignant was ready to study biology and apply to a program for veterinarians (兽医), but he didn’t live up to the requirement of mathematics and had to give up that dream. During a fieldwork experience, however, he learned about an opening for an internship (实习) at the Millbrook School’s Trevor Zoo. His work at the zoo has caused him to develop a lifelong interest and career in exhibiting non-native animals and working with others in the field of conservation. The Trevor Zoo, established in 1936, is small compared to many well-known zoos. As a consequence, Tousignant says, “We all wear a lot of hats.” But the wide range of tasks on the job is exactly what’s kept him around for all these years. The role of organizer — helping to shape the big-picture purposes and goals for the zoo — comes easily to Tousignant, but he says he appreciates the hands-on time he spends working with the animals and designing exhibits. Working with students and observing the impact of the zoo program on their early learning experiences has been inspiring to Tousignant, who says the value of an on-campus zoo creates many opportunities to catch students’ imaginations and stimulate their curiosity about science and conservation. One living, breathing example is Millbrook alumnus (校友), Thomas Lovejoy, PhD, today a senior expert and a professor of environmental science and policy at George Mason University in Virginia. Lovejoy’s experience working at the Trevor Zoo during high school inspired a lifelong career devoted to conservation. 24.(2.5分)What is special about the Trevor Zoo among AZA-accredited zoos? A.It has multiple wildlife species. B.It belongs to a private organization. C.It lies in the center of Millbrook. D.It is operated by a high school. 25.(2.5分)What led to Tousignant’s career interest? A.Animal research. B.Zoo internship. C.Math requirement. D.Biology study. 26.(2.5分)What does the underlined phrase “wear a lot of hats” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Take on various roles. B.Make the most of strengths. C.Work with many partners. D.Have a large collection of hats. 27.(2.5分)Why is Thomas Lovejoy mentioned in the last paragraph? A.To attract more students to visit zoos. B.To prove the popularity of conservation. C.To introduce a famous university professor. D.To show the Trevor Zoo’s influence on students. (本题10分)For over 150 years, biologists have been perplexed by a question even Charles Darwin couldn’t fully answer: Why do some plants arrive in a new place and spread rapidly, while others barely survive? In On the Origin of Species, Darwin proposed two competing ideas about successful invasive (入侵的) plants: they are similar to native plants and already suited to local conditions or they are different enough to avoid direct competition. For years, evidence seemed to support both ideas, but the broader pattern remained unclear. Tadeo Ramirez-Parada and his team at UC Santa Barbara turned to herbaria, collections of preserved plant specimens (标本) gathered over centuries. Each dried plant comes with valuable information, including where and when it was collected, and whether it was flowering at the time. The team focused on flowering time, a critical factor in plant reproduction. Using specimen records, historical weather data, and advanced statistical methods, the researchers estimated flowering periods for thousands of species. They then compared invasive and native plants across regions. The results of the new study revealed a striking pattern. In regions with harsh conditions like extreme heat, cold or dryness, successful invasive plants responded to the same environmental cues as established species did. In milder regions with greater biodiversity, invasive species often flowered significantly earlier so they could attract pollinators (传粉者) before natives, and produce seeds sooner and spread them over a longer period. The findings may help land managers identify future threats before they become major problems. In mild climates, evolutionarily distinct invasive plants may deserve closer attention. In harsher climates, introduced species that behave like native plants may pose the greatest risk. The research also highlights concerns about invasive annual grasses, which have transformed many ecosystems. In California, large areas once supported diverse communities of native grasses and wildflowers, but today, many of those landscapes are dominated by fast-growing invasive grasses, which can reduce habitat quality for wildlife, increase wildfire risk, and limit the return of native species. 28.(2.5分)What does the underlined word “perplexed” in paragraph 1 probably mean? A.Puzzled. B.Impressed. C.Calmed. D.Defined. 29.(2.5分)What does paragraph 2 focus on about the new study? A.What it revealed. B.Who supported it. C.How it was conducted. D.Why it was mentioned. 30.(2.5分)Why did invasive species in milder regions flower earlier? A.To respond to extreme heat. B.To escape pollinators’ attack. C.To behave like native species. D.To avoid competition with natives. 31.(2.5分)What does the new research reveal about invasive species? A.They are more adaptive than natives. B.They contribute to local biodiversity. C.They warn people of natural disasters. D.They can pose threats to native species. (本题10分)According to a new study published in the journal Science, rats, like humans, can use their brains to imagine walking to a new location or moving a virtual item to a new place, even when they are physically sitting still. Scientists think much of the human imagination is controlled by the hippocampus (海马体), a region of the brain that plays a role in memory and learning, which makes humans able to navigate (导航) an environment using just their thoughts. The hippocampus is also involved in rats’ spatial memory. But researchers have long wondered whether rats can navigate an environment like humans can. The problem, until now, was finding a way to test that. For the new experiment, scientists spent years developing virtual reality for rats — a brain machine that could help them answer this question. First, they implanted electrodes (电极) into the animals’ brains to record activity in their hippocampus. Then, they put the animals just on a ball-shaped running machine and supported them with a 360-degree screen showing a virtual reality environment. As the rats ran on the running machine, they moved through the virtual environment in the screen. Researchers trained them to navigate to specific areas by rewarding them with a bit of sugar water. In another part of the experiment, they severed the running machine, leaving the rats to navigate the virtual reality environment using only their minds. In this task, the brain machine translated the animals’ brain activity into motion on the screen. When the rats recreated the hippocampus activity associated with a specific location, the screen jumped to that site, where the rats got a reward. Three of the four rats tested were able to navigate the virtual reality tasks, according to The Washington Post. Together, the findings indicate rats can mentally navigate environments they’ve visited in the past, just like humans do. Rats can also, it seems, hold their thoughts on a specific location for several seconds. 32.(2.5分)What once confused the scientists before the experiment? A.How rats’ hippocampus works. B.The location of rats’ hippocampus. C.The structure of rats’ hippocampus. D.Whether rats have the ability to navigate. 33.(2.5分)What does the underlined word “severed” in paragraph 4 mean? A.Showed off. B.Switched off. C.Turned on. D.Gave away. 34.(2.5分)What can we conclude from the findings? A.The rats can go somewhere by memory. B.The rats can focus their minds for a long time. C.The rats can translate the brain activity into motion. D.The rats can imagine something they’ve never seen. 35.(2.5分)Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.Rats Can Use Imagination As Well As Humans Do B.Scientists Used Brain Machine to Test Rats’ Imagination C.Rats Can Use Imagination to Navigate in Virtual Reality D.Scientists Invented a Machine That Creates Virtual Reality (本题12.5分)We all know that our dogs have feelings, and that they can be happy or sad. But, do dogs actually cry real tears when they get sad? Dogs are highly sensitive pets, and they experience a variety of emotions, just like humans. 36(2.5分) They might just have watery eyes. As far as scientists know, humans are the only species that cry for emotional reasons. Dogs do “cry” when they’re sad. However, dogs use voices to express feelings rather than having watery eyes. They begin doing this at a young age by crying out for their moms when in trouble. 37(2.5分) As they get older, dogs may continue this whining (哀鸣) when sad. Once they have matured, dogs consider their human owners to be the pack leader, or mother figure, and will direct their whining or crying towards them. Many specialists believe dogs suffering from separation anxiety will whine for their mothers. 38(2.5分) 39(2.5分) They can also be sad, in pain or attempting to let you know that they’re feeling uncomfortable or want something. Also, dogs may howl (嗥叫) occasionally, which is just another form of “crying”. In fact, many experts believe that howling is a dog’s ultimate expression of sadness. If dogs don’t produce emotional tears, why do they tear up at all? Studies show there is oftentimes a medical reason behind dogs having tears. 40(2.5分) A dog’s tear ducts (泪管) work somewhat differently. For dogs, the tears or liquid will flow back into the throat and nose rather than from the eyes. A.This is because dogs are social animals. B.However, no science proves dogs cry for sadness. C.Separation anxiety isn’t the only cause of dogs whining. D.Similarly, when sad, they go to their parent-like person. E.Virtually, that may be a sign of a serious health condition. F.The reasons for dogs crying or howling are exactly the same. G.They learn to make distinct sounds that can be recognized instantly. 三、完形填空 (本题15分)Dogs are not allowed off-leash (不拴绳) in the Nature Reserve in Lewes, England. We work like men.” Outside stars were beginning to appear. Grandpa climbed on his bicycle. My friend Aslam and I jogged beside him. A sweet smell rose from Mr. Ahmed’s mango trees as we passed. Aslam slowed his jog, picked a few mangoes, and stuffed them into his pockets. I wished I were as lucky as Aslam with his movie-star hair, always making trouble, never getting caught. I wished I were at home, studying for the coming exam. I wished... But Grandpa was counting on me. We needed the money. He worked hard so I could stay in school. When we reached the Lawachara National Park, the moon had risen midway into the sky. We entered the shadows of the forest. Aslam feared there might be tigers behind the trees. I told him they were rarely seen there. He then reminded me of our task of catching pangolins (穿山甲), and warned me not to be overly merciful. He still remembered how I’d saved a snake from those boys the week before. My stomach began to turn. I knew what the traders would do with the pangolin if we found one. “A den (兽穴)is near. Stay and watch. I’m going further on to another.” Grandpa handed Aslam a cardboard box. “Remember, the traders won’t pay for an empty box. They want big pangolins with many scales (鳞). The better the scales, the better the money. I’m counting on you, boys.” Then he walked away. Aslam asked why people would pay so much for pangolins. I told him they thought the scales were magical and could cure all kinds of diseases. Then he went on with his movie-star dream, promising all our money troubles would end once he made it. We chatted away, watching the moon climbing higher into the sky. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Suddenly we heard a low noise from among the fallen leaves. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: After a while, Grandpa came back and saw the empty box. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2 / 2 2 / 2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高中英语单元测试 —— Unit 2 Wildlife Protection 学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、听力选择题 1.(本题1.5分)What makes the man appreciate his dog? He learned how to check the animals’ temperatures and give them simple treatments under the vets’ guidance. But, now, David’s favorite part of volunteering is training homeless dogs. He teaches them basic commands like “sit” and “stay”. Many of these dogs have been adopted by families because of his training. David says that seeing the dogs find new homes makes him feel really happy. In the future, David wants to study veterinary medicine in college. He hopes that after he graduates, he can work in an animal hospital and help more animals that are sick or injured. He believes that every animal deserves to be cared for and loved. 二、阅读理解 (本题7.5分)Creating a Habitat for Bees Why not observe some insects in a habitat you built yourself? 【答案】24.D 25.B 26.A 27.D 【导语】主要介绍米尔布鲁克学校特雷弗动物园的独特之处,讲述艾伦的从业经历以及该动物园对学生环保理念带来的深远影响。 【详解】24.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“Truly one of a kind, the Trevor Zoo at Millbrook School is the only zoo in the nation accredited (认证) by Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and run by a high school.(米尔布鲁克学校的特雷弗动物园独一无二,它是全国唯一获得动物园与水族馆协会认证、由一所高中运营的动物园。)”可知,特雷弗动物园的特殊之处在于由一所高中运营。 25.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“During a fieldwork experience, however, he learned about an opening for an internship (实习) at the Millbrook School’s Trevor Zoo. 根据第一段中的“For over 150 years, biologists have been perplexed by a question even Charles Darwin couldn’t fully answer: Why do some plants arrive in a new place and spread rapidly, while others barely survive?(150多年来,生物学家一直被一个连查尔斯·达尔文都无法完全解答的问题所perplexed:为什么有些植物到达新环境后能迅速扩散,而另一些却难以生存?)”可知,这个问题连达尔文都没能完全解决,说明它非常令人困惑。A选项“Puzzled(困惑的)”与文意相符。 29.主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“The team focused on flowering time, a critical factor in plant reproduction. A.Rats Can Use Imagination As Well As Humans Do B.Scientists Used Brain Machine to Test Rats’ Imagination C.Rats Can Use Imagination to Navigate in Virtual Reality D.Scientists Invented a Machine That Creates Virtual Reality 【答案】32.D 33.B 34.A 35.C 【导语】文章主要介绍一项发表在《科学》杂志上的新研究,实验证明老鼠和人类一样,可以依靠大脑想象,在虚拟现实中凭借思维完成环境导航。 【详解】32.细节理解题。根据原文第二段“But researchers have long wondered whether rats can navigate an environment like humans can.(但是研究人员一直想知道老鼠是否能够像人类一样对环境进行导航。)”可知,在实验之前困扰科学家的问题是老鼠是否具备导航的能力。 33.词句猜测题。根据原文第四段“As the rats ran on the running machine, they moved through the virtual environment in the screen.(当老鼠在跑步机上奔跑时,它们就在屏幕的虚拟环境中移动。)”以及“In another part of the experiment, they severed the running machine, leaving the rats to navigate the virtual reality environment using only their minds.(在实验的另一部分,他们severed跑步机,让老鼠只依靠大脑思维来导航虚拟现实环境。)”可知,前后实验形成对比,前一组老鼠依靠跑步机跑动操控虚拟场景,后一组不再使用跑步机,只靠思维。由此推断severed表示“关闭”。 34.推理判断题。根据原文第五段“Together, the findings indicate rats can mentally navigate environments they’ve visited in the past, just like humans do.(总而言之,这些研究结果表明老鼠可以像人类一样,在脑海中对它们曾经去过的环境进行导航。)”可知,老鼠能够凭借记忆去往某些地方。 35.主旨大意题。根据原文第一段“According to a new study published in the journal Science, rats, like humans, can use their brains to imagine walking to a new location or moving a virtual item to a new place, even when they are physically sitting still.(根据发表在《科学》期刊上的一项新研究,老鼠和人类一样,即便身体保持静止,也可以用大脑想象走到新地点或者把虚拟物品移动到新位置。)”以及全文实验内容可知,实验证明老鼠和人类一样,可以依靠大脑想象,在虚拟现实中凭借思维完成环境导航。故本文最佳标题是“老鼠可以运用想象力在虚拟现实中导航”。 (本题12.5分)We all know that our dogs have feelings, and that they can be happy or sad. 【答案】36.B 37.G 38.D 39.C 40.E 【导语】文章主要探讨狗狗是否会因为悲伤流下真正的眼泪,介绍狗狗表达情绪的方式以及狗狗流泪背后的医学原因。 【详解】36.根据前文“Dogs are highly sensitive pets, and they experience a variety of emotions, just like humans.(狗是高度敏感的宠物,和人类一样,它们会体会各种各样的情绪。)”以及后文“They might just have watery eyes. (运用了Only+状语置于句首引发的部分倒装结构) 六、书面表达 67.(本题25分)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 “Tonight,” Grandpa clapped me on the back, “we work, Rahim. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Suddenly we heard a low noise from among the fallen leaves. Aslam quickly responded, grabbing the box. We leaned forward and looked hard into the darkness — a pangolin! Aslam hissed my name and signaled me to get it. For a while I held my breath, watching the pangolin sweeping dry leaves with its scaled tail. Aslam pressed me on by reminding me of Grandpa’s words about acting like a man. Yet I just couldn’t bring myself to harm the innocent creature. I tried to convince Aslam it was utterly inhuman to earn money by hunting pangolins. Aslam fell silent, staring at the helpless pangolin, and slowly lowered the box. After a while, Grandpa came back and saw the empty box. He glanced from Aslam to me. His white eyebrows stitched together. Unable to lie to him, I recounted everything in detail. I’d expected a good scolding, but instead I felt Grandpa’s rough hands gently stroking my face. He admitted he never liked the work and had turned to it only to support the family. Then he urged me to stay in school so I’d never have to make a living through something that troubled my conscience. Deeply touched, I promised someday I’d make him proud. The money was gone, but Grandpa’s back no longer looked so “bent” to me. 3.词类激活: 行为类: ①讲述:recount/narrate/describe/relate ②盯着:stare at/fix one’s eyes on 情感类: ①沉默的:silent/dumb ②温柔地:gently/tenderly 【点睛】【高分句型1】 For a while I held my breath, watching the pangolin sweeping dry leaves with its scaled tail.(运用了现在分词作状语) 【高分句型2】 He admitted he never liked the work and had turned to it only to support the family.(运用了省略了that的宾语从句) 2 / 2 2 / 2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始。Wow, you're walking your dog again. Every sunday morning, he goes to the shelter and spends four hours there, and in the afternoon, two hours at first, his main tasks were feeding the animals and cleaning their cages. As he spent more time with the animals, he became interested in helping the vets take care of sick animals. He learned how to check the animals temperatures and give them simple treatments under the vet guidance. But now David's favorite part of volunteering is training homeless dogs. He teaches them basic commands like sit and stay. Many of these dogs have been adopted by families because of his training. David says that seeing the dogs find new homes makes him feel really happy in the future. David wants to study veteran medicine in college. He hopes that after he graduates, he can work in an animal hospital and help more animals that are sick or injured. He believes that every animal deserves to be cared for and loved.
