(本题10分)Adoption days are a great way for people to find new pets and for shelter animals to find forever homes. That’s exactly what was expected to happen when a Campbell County shelter event in Virginia held an adoption day on June 8, 2025. But what happened that day was far from ordinary.
A stray (流浪动物) named Sienna was greeting people at the event when she noticed something wasn’t right with one of the attendees. Sienna walked up to the man and stayed with him, putting her paw (爪子) on his leg. Sienna, who had probably been trained before becoming a stray, was signaling that he was about to have a seizure
A few moments later, the man’s wife, Kristen Davis, returned to his side and saw that there was a medical emergency unfolding. Davis quickly brought him to their car, turned on the air conditioning and gave him the care he needed.
The Campbell County Animal Control explained on social media that Sienna reacted almost immediately and understood what was going on before it occurred. The post explained, “Sienna knew it before any human saw the signs. She gently broke away and walked straight up to a man she had never met. Then she did what surprised the people at present. It wasn’t a trick. It wasn’t reminded of.”
Davis updated a post online. “We already have three dogs at home, but none of them are service dogs or can detect seizures like Sienna,” she said, adding that her family wasn’t capable of adopting a fourth, but she wanted people to know how amazing Sienna was.
Many people were interested in adopting Sienna and a couple, who live 50 miles away, recently came to the shelter to meet her. They adopted Sienna and she has not left their son’s side ever since.
Why did Sienna walk up to the man?
A.She detected his health issue. B.She enjoyed playing with him.
C.She desired to be adopted soon. D.She was asked to entertain him.
What did the Campbell County Animal Control say about what Sienna did?
A.It went as people had expected. B.It turned out to be a funny trick.
C.It was intentionally reminded of. D.It seemed like her natural response.
What did Davis’s online post show?
A.Her capacity to train stray dogs. B.Her high praise for Sienna.
C.Her strong willingness to volunteer. D.Her decision to take Sienna home.
What can we learn about Sienna from the text?
A.She has a happy ending. B.She is good at caring for kids.
C.She hates staying at the shelter. D.She will work in the medical field.
Summer comes, and mosquitoes constantly buzz and bite, leaving red marks and ruining our sleep.
To fight them, DEET (避蚊胺) is assumed to be the gold standard for preventing mosquito bites. Most researchers agree that a key part of its effectiveness is unpleasantness — the bugs just hate to be around it. However, some mosquitoes seem capable of overcoming their revulsion, leading to the theory that the insects might be getting used to the chemical.
Claudio Lazzari at the University of Tours set out to investigate, by running a version of the experiments made famous by Ivan Pavlov in the late 1800s where dogs were conditioned to associate sounds with food. In those experiments, Pavlov routinely rang a signal bell and then immediately fed the dogs. Eventually, when he made the sounds but didn’t provide food, he found the animals still salivated (流口水), as they would before a meal.
In his experiments, Dr Lazzari presented hungry mosquitoes with warm sheep’s blood while being exposed to a gentle breeze of ordinary air or of air blown past a piece of paper soaked in DEET. After many similar repeated experiments, the researchers then bravely presented their own hands to the insects. One hand was covered in DEET while the other was left untreated. To their frustration they watched as 60% of the mosquitoes that had been presented with blood while being exposed to DEET bit the hand coated in DEET. In contrast, all mosquitoes trained with ordinary air avoided it entirely.
Dr Lazzari’s conditioning in the laboratory was important for the mosquitoes in developing their fondness for DEET. But the chances are good that a similar scene is taking place in the real world, where the effects of DEET typically weaken over time, especially when people are sweating or not applying enough of the stuff in the first place.
In such circumstances, hungry mosquitoes are most likely to be able to tolerate the faint smell of DEET, bite a lightly protected person, begin connecting the smell with food and become more dangerous to those they encounter later in their lives.
What does the underlined word “revulsion” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Dislike. B.Fondness. C.Desire. D.Curiosity.
Why was Pavlov’s experiment mentioned?
A.To prove DEET’s effect. B.To explain conditioning.
C.To honor early biologists. D.To analyze animal behavior.
What can we learn about the research from paragraph 4?
A.Sheep’s blood drove mosquitoes away. B.All mosquitoes weren’t thirsty for blood.
C.Ordinary air fueled mosquitoes’ appetite. D.Most mosquitoes were conditioned to DEET.
Why does DEET sometimes fail to keep mosquitoes away?
A.Sweat clears DEET completely. B.Mosquitoes associate it with food.
C.Its smell grows stronger over time. D.Human blood weakens the chemical.
(本题10分)Ants that consume a sugary treat mixed with caffeine become noticeably better at finding their way back to it. A new study, published in Science, focused on Argentine ants, a widespread attacking species. Efforts to control them typically rely on poisonous bait (诱饵), but these strategies often fall short. The colony of ants may ignore the bait or abandon it before it spreads widely. The research team from the University of Regensburg explored whether caffeine, which is already known to enhance learning in bees, could help ants better remember bait locations and lead more nestmates to them.
To investigate this idea, the scientists designed a controlled experiment using different caffeine levels. 142 ants crossed a small toy drawbridge onto a test surface, which consisted of an A4 sheet placed over acrylic (丙烯酸). There, they encountered a drop of sugar solution containing 0 ppm, 25 ppm, 250 ppm, or 2,000 ppm of caffeine.
The team tracked each ant’s movement with an automated system, measuring both travel time and how direct their paths were. Ants that received only sugar showed little improvement over time, indicating they were not learning the reward’s location effectively. For ants exposed to 25 ppm of caffeine, foraging (觅食) time decreased by 28 percent with each visit. At 250 ppm, the improvement reached 38 percent. The highest caffeine level did not produce the same benefit.
The improvement was not due to increased speed. Instead, caffeinated ants followed more direct routes, suggesting stronger focus and better spatial memory. Their pace remained unchanged across all doses, but their paths became less winding at the lower and intermediate levels of caffeine.
The findings suggest that caffeine could play a role in improving pest control strategies for Argentine ants. By helping ants learn bait locations more quickly and bring back more nestmates, caffeine could increase how effectively poison spreads through a colony before the ants detect it. However, the researchers caution that more work is needed before applying this approach in real-world settings.
What inspired the research team to conduct the experiment?
A.The desire to stop ant attack.
B.The impact of caffeine on bees.
C.The need to increase ants’ speed.
D.The failure of their using previous baits.
What can be said about the ants exposed to 250 ppm of caffeine?
A.They increased their movement speed.
B.They were unable to return to their nests.
C.They acquired positional memory effectively.
D.They required additional duration for foraging.
How did caffeine affect the ants’ movement?
A.It greatly increased their pace.
B.It helped them avoid winding routes.
C.It brought them more food choices.
D.It encouraged them to explore new areas.
What can be the best title for the text?
A.Caffeine Helping Ants Find Food Faster
B.Effective Poisonous Bait Attracting Ants
C.Caffeine’s Role in Controlling Ants’ Memory
D.A New Way to Study Ants’ Foraging Behavior

Jane had always loved animals. Earlier this spring, her class visited a local wildlife rescue center on a school field trip. Ms. Parker, one of the wildlife workers, introduced how injured and orphaned animals were cared for by trained staff. Birds received proper food and care, and young ones often practiced flying with others before being released into the wild. Jane found the talk fascinating, though she never imagined it would become relevant to her own life.
One Saturday morning, Jane heard faint chirping (唧唧叫) coming from the balcony outside her bedroom. Looking out, she spotted a tiny robin (知更鸟) chick in a flower pot. It seemed to have fallen from a nearby nest. Jane and her mother waited for hours, hoping the mother bird would return, but she never showed up.
Jane felt sorry for the tiny bird. Luckily, it looked healthy, and its fluffy feathers and cheerful chirps quickly won her heart. “Can we keep him for a few days?” she begged. Her mother hesitated. “We can try, but remember — we don’t know much about caring for wild birds, and our home may not be the best place for one.” Still, Jane was eager to help. At home, she and her mother turned an old aquarium (鱼缸) into a temporary nest. Then they put it on the living room table for observation.
Jane carefully fed the chick worms and named him Chick-a-dude. The little robin ate and drank regularly each day, hopping around quietly in its makeshift home. Staring at the fluffy little creature, Jane was filled with delight.
However, as time passed, doubts began to creep in. Neither Jane nor her mother had any experience caring for wild birds, and they often wondered whether they were meeting all of the chick’s needs. Things became even more difficult because of Misty, their large Labrador dog. Ever since Chick-a-dude arrived, Misty had watched the aquarium closely and barked whenever the chick moved. One afternoon, Jane was doing homework when loud barking suddenly erupted from the living room. Terrified, Chick-a-dude fluttered (振翅) wildly out of the aquarium as Misty jumped excitedly around him.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】24.A 25.D 26.B 27.A
根据第二段“Sienna walked up to the man and stayed with him, putting her paw (爪子) on his leg. Sienna, who had probably been trained before becoming a stray, was signaling that he was about to have a seizure (突然发作).(西耶娜走向这名男子,待在他身边,把爪子搭在他腿上。这只在流浪前或许受过训练的西耶娜,发出信号表明他即将疾病发作。)”可知,西耶娜走向这名男子是因为察觉到他的健康问题。
25.推理判断题。根据第四段“The post explained, “Sienna knew it before any human saw the signs. She gently broke away and walked straight up to a man she had never met. Then she did what surprised the people at present. It wasn’t a trick. It wasn’t reminded of.”(该帖子解释道:“在任何人发现征兆之前,西耶娜就察觉到了。她轻轻挣脱,径直走向一位素未谋面的男士。接着她做出了令在场所有人惊讶的举动。这不是把戏,也没有受到提示。”)”可知,坎贝尔县动物管控部门表示这是狗狗的本能反应。
26.推理判断题。根据第五段“Davis updated a post online. “We already have three dogs at home, but none of them are service dogs or can detect seizures like Sienna,” she said, adding that her family wasn’t capable of adopting a fourth, but she wanted people to know how amazing Sienna was.(戴维斯在网上更新帖子。“我们家里已经有三只狗,但没有一只是服务犬,也没有谁能像西耶娜一样察觉疾病发作。”她补充说自家无法收养第四只狗,但她想让大家知道西耶娜有多了不起。)”可知,戴维斯的网络帖子表达了她对西耶娜的高度赞扬。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Many people were interested in adopting Sienna and a couple, who live 50 miles away, recently came to the shelter to meet her. They adopted Sienna and she has not left their son’s side ever since.(很多人想要收养西耶娜,一对住在50英里外的夫妇来到收容所见它。他们收养了西耶娜,从此它一直陪伴在他们儿子身边。)”可知,西耶娜拥有圆满的结局。
(本题10分)Summer comes, and mosquitoes constantly buzz and bite, leaving red marks and ruining our sleep.
【答案】28.A 29.B 30.D 31.B
根据第二段“Most researchers agree that a key part of its effectiveness is unpleasantness — the bugs just hate to be around it. However, some mosquitoes seem capable of overcoming their revulsion, leading to the theory that the insects might be getting used to the chemical.(大多数研究人员都认为,其有效的关键在于它的令人不愉快——虫子只是讨厌待在它周围。然而,一些蚊子似乎能够克服它们的revulsion,这导致了昆虫可能正在逐渐习惯这种化学物质)”可知,蚊子原本讨厌避蚊胺,后来克服的是这种厌恶感,故revulsion意为“厌恶,反感”,与Dislike意思最接近。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段“Claudio Lazzari at the University of Tours set out to investigate, by running a version of the experiments made famous by Ivan Pavlov in the late 1800s where dogs were conditioned to associate sounds with food.
根据第四段“To their frustration they watched as 60% of the mosquitoes that had been presented with blood while being exposed to DEET bit the hand coated in DEET. In contrast, all mosquitoes trained with ordinary air avoided it entirely. (令他们沮丧的是,他们看到,在接触避蚊胺的同时被提供血液的蚊子中有60%叮咬了涂有避蚊胺的手。相比之下,所有用普通空气训练的蚊子都完全避开了它)”可知,经过反复将避蚊胺气味与血液(食物)配对后,大部分蚊子被训练得不再排斥避蚊胺,即大多数蚊子对避蚊胺形成了条件反射。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“In such circumstances, hungry mosquitoes are most likely to be able to tolerate the faint smell of DEET, bite a lightly protected person, begin connecting the smell with food and become more dangerous to those they encounter later in their lives. (在这种情况下,饥饿的蚊子很可能能够忍受避蚊胺微弱的气味,叮咬防护薄弱的人,开始将这种气味与食物联系起来,并对它们以后遇到的其他人变得更加危险)”可知,避蚊胺失效的原因是蚊子将它的气味与食物建立了联系,从而克服了厌恶。
【答案】32.B 33.C 34.B 35.A
根据第一段“The research team from the University of Regensburg explored whether caffeine, which is already known to enhance learning in bees, could help ants better remember bait locations and lead more nestmates to them.(雷根斯堡大学的研究团队探究咖啡因能否帮助蚂蚁更好地记住诱饵的位置,并带领更多巢穴同伴前往那里,而已知咖啡因可以增强蜜蜂的学习能力)”可知,正是咖啡因对蜜蜂的作用给了研究团队灵感,促使他们开展针对蚂蚁的相关实验。
根据第三段“At 250 ppm, the improvement reached 38 percent.(摄入250ppm咖啡因的蚂蚁,每次到访所需觅食时间减少了38%)”以及第四段“Instead, caffeinated ants followed more direct routes, suggesting stronger focus and better spatial memory...their paths became less winding at the lower and intermediate levels of caffeine.(相反,摄入咖啡因的蚂蚁会走更直接的路线,这说明它们注意力更集中,空间记忆也更好……在中低等剂量咖啡因的作用下,蚂蚁的路线蜿蜒程度更低)”可知,250ppm属于中低剂量区间,该剂量下的蚂蚁能有效获得位置记忆,缩短觅食时间,路线也更笔直。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段“Their pace remained unchanged across all doses, but their paths became less winding at the lower and intermediate levels of caffeine.(所有剂量组中蚂蚁的步速都没有变化,但是在中低等剂量咖啡因的作用下,蚂蚁的路线蜿蜒程度更低)”可知,咖啡因帮助蚂蚁避开了蜿蜒的路线,让路线更直接。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Alarmed, Jane rushed forward without hesitation.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Jane set off for the wildlife rescue center with Chick-a-dude.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Alarmed, Jane rushed forward without hesitation. Her heart pounded as she scooped Chick-a-dude up before he could fly any farther. Nearby, Misty was still barking excitedly and trying to follow the bird’s movements. “It’s okay. You’re safe now,” Jane whispered, gently holding the trembling chick. Looking at the frightened bird, Jane suddenly felt uneasy. Misty’s constant attention, the stress of keeping the chick indoors, and her own lack of experience all made her realize that their home might not be the right place for him. She talked with her mother about her concerns and finally made up her mind.
The next morning, Jane set off for the wildlife rescue center with Chick-a-dude. When she got there, she was delighted to see Ms. Parker again. After hearing the story, she smiled warmly and assured Jane that they would take good care of the little bird. Seeing Jane’s worried expression, Ms. Parker patiently explained that Chick-a-dude would receive proper food, careful monitoring, and opportunities to practice flying with other young birds. Hearing this, Jane felt a deep sense of relief. Although she would miss his cheerful chirps, she finally understood that loving a wild animal did not mean keeping it close. Sometimes, it meant helping it return to where it truly belonged.
