(本题10分)Most teenagers kill time playing video games, or surfing TikTok. But it’s not so for William Gadoury, a 14-year-old from Quebec. William Gadoury has been crazy about the Mayans for most of his childhood, ever since his grandparents bought him books about the civilization. What started as a hobby at age 12 snowballed into serious research, and he theorized that the locations of Mayan cities might correspond (相一致) to stars in Mayan constellations (星座).
Using ancient books, Gadoury analyzed 22 Mayan constellation maps and covered the positions onto HERE WeGo images of the Yucatan Peninsula, which to this day is home to large local populations and some best-preserved architecture from Mayan culture. He would track the constellations from HERE WeGo using special sheets, covering them onto the position of Mayan cities on a paper map. The teen was able to show that 117 Mayan cities matched up with the position of the stars, with the brightest stars representing bigger cities.
But when Gadoury was working on the 23rd Mayan constellation, he found a conflict: three stars, but only two ancient cities on HERE WeGo. The third star pointed to a location on the Mexico-Belize border. However, the area was covered with thick jungle, leaving Gadoury stuck.
Luckily, he asked Canadian Space Agency (CSA) for images from their RADARSAT-2 satellite. Indeed, there was a square, man-made-looking structure in the heavy forest. Gadoury then learned a fire had swept across the region, thinning out the grass cover. He found images from the agency, and eventually concluded that there was indeed a city there.
Gadoury’s findings eventually took him into the jungle in 2022 to search on foot, along with scientist Francisco Estrada- Belli. The team discovered a farming village deep in the Mexican jungle, which showed the “backbone” of the Maya’s long-term success, which was down to their ability to work the land and support large cities.
What are Gadoury’s findings mainly about?
A.The villages in the Mexican jungle.
B.The images from CSA satellites.
C.The origins of Mayan culture.
D.The locations of Mayan cities.
How did Gadoury carry out his research according to Paragraph 2?
A.By tracking the best-preserved building on maps.
B.By analyzing 117 Mayan cities in ancient books.
C.By checking star maps against satellite images.
D.By updating HERE WeGo on the Internet.
What made it difficult for Gadoury to find the third city of the 23rd Mayan constellation?
A.A thick forest. B.A forest fire. C.Fund shortage. D.Bad weather.
Which of the following best describes Gadoury?
A.Cheerful. B.Intelligent. C.Ambitious. D.Sympathetic.
(本题10分)Pu’er is the home of the world-known tea of the same name. Since other tea-growing centers in Pu’er may have a larger output, more famous brands (品牌) and heritage surrounding the history of the Tea-horse Ancient Road, Jingmai, also in Pu’er, may not be people’s first choice to look for the best Pu’er Tea.
However, being cut off from the outside by rivers, this mountainous area has become a perfect place for an ancient planting technique, growing tea trees under forest, known as the “under-story” method, which filters (过滤) sunshine while ensuring water.
Nan Kang, former head of Mangjing village, said, “Compared to modern plantations, we’ll surely produce less tea in the ancient forest. But we have to respect our tradition and belief. Birds eat insects to protect the tea and the fallen leaves from trees provide fertilizer. Everything improves the other, but also limits each other. It is the way of nature.”
Nan is an old-time Blang leader’s grandson. Following an old leader named Pa Aileng, his ancestors (祖先) came to settle near the Jingmai Mountain centuries ago. It is believed that Pa Aileng found that tea leaves made his people recover from diseases they suffered from during their moving to other places, so the hero is also considered as a “tea ancestor”. Blang people chose a mountain to remember him. They call it Peak Aileng.
“We Blang people believe tea has its own spirit,” Nan says. “The first planted tea tree in every field is called the Tea Spirit Tree. That means the field has an owner. And the symbol also makes everyone follow moral codes and protect the plants.”
Now, this mountain of tea, also a storehouse of the time-tested traditions of local ethnic groups, attracts global attention. The Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of the Jingmai Mountain in Pu’er was named as a World Heritage Site, becoming China’s 57th entry on the list.

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted (厌恶的), angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified (多样化) these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

My senior year was flying by, and the annual school cultural fair was approaching. As an exchange student from China, I was both excited and nervous. This year, Ms. Chen, encouraged us to not just showcase cultures, but to truly share a piece of ourselves. After much thought, I decided to introduce something deeply personal and representative of my heritage: Chinese calligraphy.
I spent days preparing. I brought my favorite inkstone, a bundle of precious rice paper, and my grandfather’s brush-a family heirloom (传家宝) he had given to me before my journey, saying it “carried the spirit of our culture” and asking me to “share its story”. Setting up my booth, I arranged everything carefully, feeling a mix of pride and the heavy weight of responsibility.
Soon, the hall was buzzing with students and their families exploring various cultures. Many paused at my booth (摊位), curious about the elegant strokes I demonstrated. I explained the meaning behind different characters like he (和) and you (友), feeling a growing confidence as I shared my culture.
Then, a group of younger students gathered around, their eyes wide with wonder. One boy, especially eager, reached out to touch the brush. He was closely followed by his mother, who watched with a kind and encouraging smile. In a split second, the unthinkable happened. His elbow knocked over the small bottle of ink. Dark, thick liquid spread rapidly across the clean white paper I had just written on, making the characters into a messy black pool. The boy stepped back, his face pale with panic.
“I’m so sorry!” he stammered. His mother’s smile vanished, replaced by a look of concern as she stepped forward, a hand gently resting on her son’s shoulder. The chatter around us stopped. Everyone was staring at the ruined work and my grandfather’s brush, now stained with ink. My heart sank. That paper was my best piece, and the brush felt heavy with history in my hand.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Para. 1: I took a deep breath, looking at the boy’s anxious face.

I've enjoyed traveling to many countries, have experienced lots of different cultures and people. One thing that I always remember is that I am a guest and cannot change or break any rules. In north america, the gift giving rules are very simple. If you are invited to one's home for dinner, bring some flowers or a small gift from your country. Among family and business partners, they don't give gifts to each other except on someone's birthday. However, the japanese give gifts quite often, often to thank others, such as a teacher or a doctor for their kindness, and there are many rules for everything, from the color to the time of giving a gift. Europeans don't generally give business gifts. They do follow some rules when visiting homes, especially when bringing flowers. W: That shows you really cared about your friend.
M: Yeah. But he responded by saying, “What do you mean?”
W: I’m confused. Why did he say that?
M: I thought the same way at first. Later, he told me that it’s not a good idea to give people suggestions about what to do when they are sick. But back in China, giving advice is always regarded as being kind.

【答案】24.D 25.C 26.A 27.B
根据第一段“What started as a hobby at age 12 snowballed into serious research, and he theorized that the locations of Mayan cities might correspond (相一致) to stars in Mayan constellations (星座). (从12岁开始的一个爱好逐渐发展成严肃的研究,他提出了玛雅城市的位置可能与玛雅星座中的星星相对应的理论。)”可知,Gadoury通过研究推测,玛雅城市的位置可能与玛雅星座中的星星相对应。所以Gadoury的发现主要是关于玛雅城市的位置。故选D。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段“Using ancient books, Gadoury analyzed 22 Mayan constellation maps and covered the positions onto HERE WeGo images of the Yucatan Peninsula, which to this day is home to large local populations and some best-preserved architecture from Mayan culture. He would track the constellations from HERE WeGo using special sheets, covering them onto the position of Mayan cities on a paper map. The teen was able to show that 117 Mayan cities matched up with the position of the stars, with the brightest stars representing bigger cities.
根据第三段“But when Gadoury was working on the 23rd Mayan constellation, he found a conflict: three stars, but only two ancient cities on HERE WeGo. The third star pointed to a location on the Mexico-Belize border. However, the area was covered with thick jungle, leaving Gadoury stuck. (但当Gadoury在研究第23个玛雅星座时,他发现了一个矛盾:三颗星,但在HERE WeGo上只有两座古城。第三颗星星指向墨西哥和伯利兹边境的一个地方。然而,该地区被茂密的丛林覆盖,使Gadoury陷入困境。)”可知茂密的森林让Gadoury很难找到第23个玛雅星座中的第三个城市,故选A。
27.推理判断题。通读全文可知,尤其第一段“What started as a hobby at age 12 snowballed into serious research, and he theorized that the locations of Mayan cities might correspond (相一致) to stars in Mayan constellations (星座). (从12岁开始的一个爱好逐渐发展成严肃的研究,他提出了玛雅城市的位置可能与玛雅星座中的星星相对应的理论。)”可知本文主要介绍了14岁的男孩 Gadoury 专心研究玛雅文明,通过比对地图和玛雅星图最终发现了一个玛雅农庄的故事。由此推知, Gadoury是一个聪明的孩子。故选B。
What is Jingmai famous for in planting Pu’er Tea?
A.A larger production. B.More famous brands.
C.Its unique planting method. D.Its transport system.
What can we learn about the “under-story” method from the text?

The discovery shows that Westerners ________.
A.consider facial expressions universally reliable
B.observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways
C.have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
D.pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth
What were the people asked to do in the study?
A.To classify some face pictures.
B.To make a face at each other.
C.To get their faces impressive.
D.To observe the researchers’ faces.
What key weakness might critics highlight about the study’s design?
A.Dependence on subjective emotion categorization.
B.Lack of more diverse American cultural groups.
C.Use of posed photos instead of natural expressions.
D.Failure to track eye movements during observation.
What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions
B.The Eye as the Window to the Soul
C.Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills
D.How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding

根据第三段中“Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.(西方人会同等地关注眼睛和嘴巴,而东方人更关注眼睛,忽视嘴巴)”可知,西方人对眼睛和嘴巴给予同等的关注。故选D。
根据第五段中“The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral.(研究人员记录了13名西方白人和13名东亚人的眼球运动,这些受试者观察带有表情的面部照片并将其分类为开心、悲伤、惊讶、恐惧、厌恶、愤怒或中性,以此研究面部表情识别中的文化差异)”可知,研究中受试者被要求对一些面部照片进行分类。故选A。
根据第一段中“People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.(东亚人比欧洲人更难分辨面部表情,《当代生物学》在线发表的一份新报告解释了原因)”以及全文围绕东西方人识别面部表情的文化差异展开分析可知,本文核心是讲述解读情绪时的文化差异。A选项“Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions(解读情感的文化差异)”最适合作为标题。故选A。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Para. 1: I took a deep breath, looking at the boy’s anxious face.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para. 2: As the fair neared its end, the boy returned to my booth, holding a carefully wrapped package.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para. 1: I took a deep breath, looking at the boy’s anxious face. A flash of hot anger surged through me — that was my grandfather’s precious brush, and my best work was ruined! But as I saw his trembling lip and the genuine terror in his eyes, my anger began to cool. Scolding him would only make this worse and go against the very spirit of “you” I had been trying to share. “It’s ... it’s alright,” I managed, my voice softer than I expected. “Let’s see what we can do.” An idea sparked. I guided his still-shaking hand to hold the brush. “In Chinese art,” I explained, “we sometimes find beauty in accidents.” Together, we transformed the inkblot into the sturdy trunk of a bamboo plant-a classic symbol in Chinese culture which represents resilience.
Para. 2: As the fair neared its end, the boy returned to my booth, holding a carefully wrapped package. “My mom helped me find this,” he said shyly. Inside was a small, beautiful inkstone. “I told her how you taught me about turning mistakes into something good.” His mother smiled behind him, adding, “He hasn’t stopped talking about Chinese culture all afternoon.” As they left, I looked at my grandfather’s brush, now permanently marked by today’s events. I realized its true story wasn’t about remaining perfectly clean, but about building bridges. Through a moment of potential conflict, we had found both he (和) and you (友) — the very essence of cultural exchange. The brush felt lighter in my hand, its story now richer than ever.
