For many, Chinese characters seem like complex symbols. However, Lena, a 20-year-old American college student, views them in a unique way. To her, each character has its own story. She pictures “ren” (person) as a cat’s face, and “ceng” (once) as an angry robot.
Lena gained popularity when she spent only 30 minutes drawing “ceng” and posted it on Xiaohongshu. Amazingly, this simple drawing got 40,000 likes overnight. Now, her creative artworks raise discussions about language, art, and cultural exchange.
Growing up in a diverse community with many Asians, Lena was surrounded by different languages and cultures. “As a child, I had Chinese friends. I was fascinated by seeing their names on lunch boxes. This language was so new to me, completely different from Western languages,” Lena remembered. This early curiosity remained with her and reappeared in college during a US-China relations course, which deepened her interest in modern Chinese culture.
Deep in Xiaohongshu, Lena noticed more characters that looked like various objects. She describes herself as imaginative and highly perceptive, often spotting details others miss.
Besides drawing, Lena translates all her posts into Chinese to show respect to her followers. Her efforts have helped her make Chinese friends online, chatting about daily life and food. Some followers said Lena understands the beauty of Chinese characters better than many Chinese. “It’s because you’re used to them,” Lena replied, adding the opposite is also true. For example, she learned from Chinese friends that “orz” looks like a person bowing in apology, but it means nothing in English. “It’s something I never thought of. That’s the result of a non-native looking at unfamiliar characters,” she said.
As Lena plans to share more character-inspired art on Xiaohongshu, her story shows a truth: language is more than words; it’s about connection and understanding the world from others’ perspectives.
24. How did Lena become popular on Xiaohongshu?
A. By sharing her daily life in China.
B. By translating English articles into Chinese.
C. By having online chats with Chinese netizens.
D. By posting creative drawings of Chinese characters.
25. What deepened Lena’s interest in modern Chinese culture?
A. Her Chinese friends. B. A US-China relations course.
C. Using Xiaohongshu. D. Drawing Chinese characters.
26. Why did Lena mention the example “orz”?
A. To explain learning difficulty. B. To prove followers’ over-praise.
C. To show non-natives’ unique views. D. To analyze grammar differences.
27. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Lena gains popularity on Xiaohongshu.
B. Diverse background fuels Lena’s interest.
C. Chinese characters: more than simple symbols.
D. Creative characters bridge language and culture.
D 25. B 26. C 27. D

Scientists say they have found signs with AI tools that elephants call each other by “names”. “They can call certain family members with a special call,” said Mickey Pardo, the study’s professor.
Elephants’ loud calls are well-known, but lower-pitched rumbles(低鸣声)matter more in many social situations. Human ears can hardly tell these rumbles apart, so researchers used AI to study elephant calls. To understand them, they studied calls of elephant family groups in Kenya. Some elephants responded to specific rumbles, and researchers fed these sounds into the AI tool. “If the calls act like names, we can find out who they are for,” Dr. Pardo said. The AI could tell which elephant a rumble targeted.
Researchers also did fieldwork, playing rumble recordings to elephants and filming their reactions. They found elephants paid more attention to calls meant for themselves, lifting ears and replying with low sounds. This proved elephants could tell whether a call was for them.
Other animals also have “names”, but these are usually copied sounds. African elephants may be the first non-human animals using non-copied sounds as names, much like humans do. Researchers say the finding shows elephants have strong social bonds. “Social connections matter greatly to elephants,” one researcher said. Learning elephant communication can help protect them better.
28. Why did the researchers turn to AI tools?
A. To find family groups in Kenya. B. To give elephants special names.
C. To record elephants’ loud calls. D. To study hard-to-tell rumbles.
29. What was the finding of the sound tests?
A. Elephants knew calls for them. B. Elephants stayed in groups.
C. Elephants gave more answers. D. Elephants followed every call.
30. Why are the “names” of elephants special?
A. Because they are easy to be heard. B. Because they show strong feelings.
C. Because they work like human names. D. Because they use copied names.
31. What does the study about elephants show?
A. Elephants share close social connections. B. Animal calls might be studied better.
C. AI can name animals correctly. D. Elephants need more human help.
D 29. A 30. C 31. A
根据第二段“Human ears can hardly tell these rumbles apart, so researchers used AI to study elephant calls.(人类耳朵几乎无法区分这些低鸣声,所以研究人员使用人工智能来研究大象的叫声)”可知,研究人员借助AI是为研究难以分辨的低鸣声。
根据第三段“They found elephants paid more attention to calls meant for themselves, lifting ears and replying with low sounds. This proved elephants could tell whether a call was for them.(他们发现大象会更加留意专门喊自己的叫声,竖起耳朵并用低沉的声音回应。这证明大象能够分辨叫声是不是喊自己的)”可知,实验发现大象能识别出呼唤自己的叫声。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Other animals also have “names”, but these are usually copied sounds. African elephants may be the first non-human animals using non-copied sounds as names, much like humans do.(其他动物也有“名字”,但通常是模仿来的声音。非洲象或许是第一种使用非模仿声音当作名字的非人类动物,和人类十分相似)”可知,大象的名字特别之处在于其作用方式类似人类的名字。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Researchers say the finding shows elephants have strong social bonds. “Social connections matter greatly to elephants,” one researcher said.(研究人员表示该发现表明大象拥有牢固的社会纽带。一位研究员说:“社会联系对大象至关重要。”)”可知,这项研究表明大象之间有着紧密的社会联系。
D
Lightning can be extremely powerful and cause serious problems on the ground. Lightning strikes can cause fires, destroy buildings, and kill people. The damage from lightning costs billions of dollars every year. In the US, lightning strikes caused the death of about 450 people between 2006 and 2021. Less lightning means fewer losses in human life, and that’s why scientists have been working on the related technology to improve lightning protection.
These years, the best way to protect buildings from lightning is by putting metal rods (杆) on the buildings. These rods are connected to the ground. The lightning is attracted to the rods, which safely guide the electricity into the ground. But lightning rods can only protect a small area. If a building is very large, it needs a lot of lightning rods. But some buildings, such as airports, are so large that it’s difficult to protect the whole building using lightning rods.
One idea is to use lasers (激光) to guide lightning, which is not novel. Scientists have been working on it for over 20 years and have successfully guided lightning with lasers inside a lab. But scientists hadn’t been able to guide lightning with lasers outside until the summer of 2021. Using a powerful laser that can fire about 1,000 times a second, scientists in Switzerland were able to guide lightning strikes for 164 feet. The heat from the laser creates a path of air that is less thick than the air around it. The path also has a special charge (电荷). The lightning can follow this path almost as if it were a lightning rod. That the scientists managed to experiment with the laser in an outdoor environment is a very big step.
Despite the progress, the laser still didn’t guide the lightning as far as the scientists would like. To protect buildings from most lightning, lasers will have to guide the lightning for a much longer distance. Lasers are also very expensive. It will probably take 10 or more years before a laser like this is truly able to protect large buildings.
32. Why do scientists develop lightning protection technology?
A. Because lightning causes great harm.
B. Because lightning hits airports often.
C. Because lightning is hard to watch.
D. Because lightning attracts scientists.
33. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The history of metal rods.
B. Disadvantages of lightning rods.
C. Ways to build large airports.
D. Rules of lightning attraction.
34. What does the underlined word “novel” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Old. B. New. C. Simple. D. Popular.
35. What does the author think of laser technology?
A. It is perfect now.
B. It will replace rods soon.
C. It needs further work.
D. It is easy to operate.
A 33. B 34. B 35. C
根据第一段“Lightning can be extremely powerful and cause serious problems on the ground. (闪电威力极大,会在地面引发严重问题。雷击会引发火灾、摧毁建筑、造成人员死亡。每年雷击带来的损失高达数十亿美元。在美国,2006至2021年间雷击造成约450人死亡。雷击变少意味着人员伤亡减少,这就是科学家研发防雷技术的原因)”可知,闪电会引发火灾、摧毁建筑并造成人员伤亡,正是因为闪电危害巨大,科学家们才致力于研发防雷技术。
【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“These years, the best way to protect buildings from lightning is by putting metal rods (杆) on the buildings.
根据第三段“One idea is to use lasers (激光) to guide lightning, which is not novel. Scientists have been working on it for over 20 years and have successfully guided lightning with lasers inside a lab. (一个设想是用激光引导闪电,这个想法并不novel。科学家已经对此研究20多年,并且已经在实验室里成功用激光引导闪电)”可知,研究已持续二十多年,用激光引导闪电的想法已经存在很久了,说明这个想法并不新颖,novel意为“新的”。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Despite the progress, the laser still didn’t guide the lightning as far as the scientists would like. To protect buildings from most lightning, lasers will have to guide the lightning for a much longer distance. Lasers are also very expensive. It will probably take 10 or more years before a laser like this is truly able to protect large buildings. (尽管取得进展,激光引导闪电的距离仍达不到科学家预期。想要防护建筑,激光需要实现更远距离的引雷。激光设备造价高昂,这类激光大概还需要十年甚至更久才能真正用来保护大型建筑)”可知,作者认为激光技术还需要进一步研究完善。

With time going by, Mother’s Day was around the corner. Nine-year-old Bruce and his six-year-old sister Alina planned to buy their mother a gift. However, they were too young to find any part-time job. With only one week left, they felt upset at the thought that their mother might receive no carnations (康乃馨) on that day.
A bunch of carnations was far beyond their budget. One day wandering on the street, they heard Mr. Green, a grocery shop owner, say he needed workers to wash soda pop bottles. Bruce turned to Alina and asked if she wanted to have a try. Alina nodded gladly. They realized this might be their chance to earn money for the flowers.
They went to ask Mr. Green for the job. After hearing their story, Mr. Green looked at them in surprise and agreed. He promised to pay them 0.1 dollar per bottle. Though they knew the week would be tiring, Bruce and Alina were overjoyed. For the following seven days, they came to the shop right after school. On Mother’s Day morning, they got 6.1 dollars, plus Bruce’s savings of 0.3 dollar.
With 6.4 dollars in total, they walked a mile to a flower shop. Inside, they told the shopkeeper they wanted carnations for their mum. Bruce pulled out all their money from his pocket and asked whether it was enough.
“But, your money is not enough!” said the shop assistant. “Even for the smallest bunch?” Bruce asked quickly and eagerly, not believing his ears. “Not enough!” the shop assistant answered clearly, with the explanation that carnations were the most expensive flowers these days because of Mother's Day.
A gentleman standing at the back happened to hear their story and said, “Wait a moment, please! I just have some carnations which are a little small but pretty. Would you like to have a look?” Bruce nodded at once. “Just a minute!” He went in the back and came out with a bunch of carnations with paper wrapping. The gentleman handed the flower to Bruce, left without asking for money, and walked away.
