I had never been out of the country before, so I was very excited. My aunt, my father and I went around with my father showing us all the unbelievable attractions in Paris. None of us spoke much French but we loved the city. We had taken the subway all over the city and were congratulating ourselves on our understanding of what is honestly a good subway design that is pretty easy to follow. We decided to visit Versailles by train. We chatted happily along the way until my father realized we were far into the French countryside and no one around spoke English. We reached the end of the line and felt frightened when everyone finally left the train. An old man and his grandchild noticed us and came up to help. He spoke no English, so in broken French we tried to explain. When he finally understood, this great man settled his grandson and showed us to the correct train and then got on it with us. Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer (换乘) and he didn’t want us to miss it. This kind man rode a train an hour and a half out of his way to make sure that three Americans got where they wanted to be. He refused to let us pay for his ticket. He did it all with a gentle smile and shook our hands gently at the stop. Then with his quiet way, he got on the train to return the way he had come. What impressed me most was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Some Americans think the French are rude for some reason, but I always try to make them change their minds with this story. 11. What happened to the author and his family on the train? A. They had a quarrel about where to go first. B. They found it hard to live in the countryside. C. They failed to get off the train at the right time. D. They couldn’t understand the signs of the train. 12. How did the man help the author and his family? A. By paying for their train tickets. B. By showing them the return way. C. By inviting them to travel together. D. By leading them to where they wanted to be. 13. What’s the purpose of the author’s writing the passage? A. To explain an unexpected problem. B. To list the unbelievable attractions in Paris. C. To share an unforgettable foreign experience. D. To show the importance of learning a foreign language. B A coffee shop near Kansas City is giving students a taste of how to run a coffee business. Campus Grounds is a student-run coffee shop put together by the Fort Osage School District and the Fort Osage Career and Technology Center. “I’m more of a hands-on person and a hands-on learner and I’m looking forward to learning something outside of the classroom,” said Sidney Sullivan, senior at Fort Osage. Sullivan and other qualified (合格的) seniors have to apply every year to be part of Campus Grounds. The selected applicants get to call all the shots, responsible for coming up with social media ideas, planning menus and considering customer feedback (反馈的意见) to offer the best mix of choices. Students also learn how to make drinks and run the cash register (现金出纳机) and some students are even paid to run the shop on Saturday as well as before and after school. “It’s been awesome. So far, I have learned to make several kinds of coffee,” said Maya Strasser, senior at Oak Grove. “Here, you’re not just following instructions from a book or video; you’re actually talking to people face-to-face, getting their feedback and making connections. It’s such a good way to learn and improve my skills.” The program was started in 2021 and includes students from four different districts (学区) including Oak Grove, Blue Springs, Fort Osage and Grain Valley. Susie Suits, Director at the Career and Technology Center at Fort Osage says the shop helps build a stronger community with every drink they serve. “It’s an excellent program. It’s one that students love to go to. It’s their favorite class. It gets students out of campus and gives people a chance to come together. It’s just a great environment,” said Suits. Campus Grounds is open Monday-Friday: 6:30 am-2:00 pm and Saturday: 7 am-2 pm. 14. What is special about Campus Grounds? A. It provides free drinks for students. B. It stays open 24 hours a day. C. It is managed by students. D. It is in the classroom. 15. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. The impact of Campus Grounds on local businesses. B. The variety of coffee drinks offered at Campus Grounds. C. The importance of teamwork among students in the program. D. The responsibilities of students working at Campus Grounds. 16. What influence does Susie Suits believe the Campus Grounds program has? A. It helps many locals return to work. B. It takes up too much of students’ time. C. It leads to a drop in student attendance at school. D. It strengthens connections within the community. C What’s your opinion on spicy food? Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili peppers in their dinner while others can’t get enough of them. Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loathe it. plenty of research has been done on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chilies is related to childhood experiences, and that cultural influences affect our taste too. But the latest study has found that a person’s love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality more than anything else, CBC News reported. “We have always assumed that liking drives intake — we eat what we like and we like what we eat. But no one has actually directly bothered to connect personality with intake of chili peppers,” said Professor John E. Hayes from Pennsylvania State University, who led the study. But before you look at the study, you should first know that “spicy” is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty taste. It is, in fact, a burning feeling that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people’s longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster. In the study, 97 participants, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personality, for example, whether they like new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin (辣椒素), the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it. By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, researchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water. Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason why some people can withstand (耐受) spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found otherwise. “It’s not that it doesn’t burn as badly, but that you actually learn to like the burning feeling,” Hayes explained. 17. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “loathe” in the second paragraph? A. Dislike. B. Fear. C. Put up with. D. Adapt to. 18. What did Professor John E. Hayes and his team discover from their study? A. What we eat actually helps to develop our personality. B. Males are more likely to enjoy spicy food than females. C. Those trying to avoid risks tend to be less interested in spicy food. D. People are wrong to treat “spicy” as a kind of taste rather than a feeling. 19. Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study? A. Because they love the burning feeling. B. Because they want to challenge themselves. C. Because their taste has become less sensitive. D. Because the more they try spicy food, the less it burns. 20. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Different people have different taste. B. What one likes to eat mainly depends on one’s personality. C. One’s personal experiences have nothing to do with their taste. D. Whether one enjoys spicy food depends largely on one’s personality. 第二节 语句排序(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 将下列几个部分(A、B、C、D 和 E)按题号排序,构成一个符合逻辑的完整语篇. 21.______→22.______→23.______→24.______→25.______ A. For some students, choosing a major is as simple as following a life-long dream. 26 No matter your view on this higher education milestone, it is important to choose a major that is useful to you. 27 This may seem too sudden if you are a freshman in college, but it is an important step. Think of your major not as a summary of your life to date, but instead as a window to your future. If your long-term goals are fairly clear, you may be able to quickly make your list of possible majors. Meet with your advisor to get to know which degrees are required for your future career (职业) or field. If you plan to become a content marketer, for example, you might major in communications, English, or marketing. 28 Having a career in mind is important, but keeping your choices open is equally important. 29 Getting a degree in a general field — like biology or English — can also be a useful strategy if you are not sure about your future career. Most majors at a given college or university have different admission (录取) requirements. 30 Some music departments, for example, require that students audition (试音) for a place in a major. A. For others, it is a challenging thing. B. The earlier you follow your dream, the better. C. It is important to think carefully about your choice. D.
