Bridges, caves and rock formations across Europe look so remarkable that they seem impossible for human hands to build. So people credit giants, devils, dragons or saints with creating them.
"Folklore has long been used to explain what we cannot otherwise explain,” says folklorist Ceri Houlbrook. "Landscape features that stand out attract stories like a magnet.” A deep gorge or a mountain full of caves could be dangerous, and an amazing structure seemed to demand an amazing builder. Four such places are introduced below.
Devil's Bridge, Wales. Three bridges rise over the Mynach Gorge. Legend says the devil built it for the first living creature to cross —until an old woman fooled him by sending a dog after her bread.
Pont del Diable, Spain. The Pont del Diable is a Roman aqueduct built on two tiers of stone arches. The devil built it for the soul of the first person to drink—so the architect sent a donkey to drink first
Giant's Causeway, Northern Ireland. Some 40,000 dark basalt columns form a natural sidewalk. People say the giant Finn McCool built a road across the sea, then fled and tore the road up.
Fingal's Cave, Scotland. On Staffa, Fingal's Cave is formed from tall basalt columns created by ancient volcanic activity, with waves later carving out the cave. Its Gaelic name means "Musical Cave,” and its sound inspired Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture.
The logic behind all stories regarding these landscapes is the same. "We want our landscapes to be storied and full of magic; we want, the features of the world around us to spark imagination,” Houlbrook says.
1. What does folklorist Ceri Houlbrook say about these stories?
A. They are mostly invented by tourists for fun.
B. They will disappear once geology is better understood.
C. They help people make sense of unexplainable things.
D. They were first written down by archaeologists.
2. What do the stories of Devil's Bridge and Pont del Diable have in common?
A. Both devils were finally fooled by humans.
B. Both devils got the soul they had asked for.
C. Both bridges were built by monks in the Middle Ages.
D. Both devils were driven away by local folklorists.
3. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A science fiction novel. B. A travel website.
C. A history textbook. D. A news report on geology.
B
When my husband Paul talked me into adopting a dog, I was filled with doubts. At 65, I thought we should be planning trips, not cleaning up dog hair. I never imagined I could grow fond of a dog, especially not the scruffy one with a torn ear from the shelter. I agreed only for Paul’s benefit.
Casey burst into our lives like a storm. Our morning walks turned into a daily struggle. Driven by his sharp sense of smell, he would tug me toward every scrap of leftover pizza or chicken nugget lying on the ground. At the mere sight of a squirrel (松鼠), he would fly into a frenzy, leaping and howling, as I struggled desperately to hold him in check. I felt worn-out and defeated, repeatedly met with the mocking question, “Who’s really walking whom?”
Hope arrived with Laurie, a young dog trainer. She explained that Casey was a hound—born to hunt. Laurie taught us not to yell, but to use a firm, confident tone to break his focus. I practiced calling out, “Casey!” with authority, something that did not come naturally to me. When he listened, he would get a treat along with a warm “Good boy”. It was a new language we were learning together.
Slowly, the chaos began to abate. I grew familiar with his quirks, and he began responding to my voice. The constant pulling transformed into a gentle rhythm except for occasional bursts of excitement. The clink of his collar tags kept time with my footsteps. My frustration softened into understanding, and eventually, into affection. Our walks were no longer a clash but a teamwork.
The greatest gift, however, was inner peace. I had always been a light, restless sleeper. One sleepless night, I found Casey sound asleep on the couch, breathing deeply and steadily. I rested my head against his warm chest, and for the first time, my worries melted away along with his calm, rhythmic breathing.
This unexpected companion, once a source of anxiety, had quietly taught me how to find rest and acceptance. He was no longer just Paul’s dog; he had become the beating heart of our home.
4. What’s the reason for the author’s adopting Casey?
A. She wanted a travel companion. B. She did it mainly for her husband.
C. She hoped to sleep better. D. She felt confident in training him.
5. What led to Casey’s misbehavior on early walks?
A. He had little familiarity with walking routes.
B. He disliked the author’s way of handling him.
C. He failed to focus in the absence of a trainer.
D. He couldn’t resist his instinct to explore
6. How did the author’s feelings change during the walks?
A. From frustration to affection. B. From fear to indifference.
C. From anger to annoyance. D. From doubt to disappointment.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Dogs require patience and firm training.
B. Old people should avoid adopting pet dogs.
C. An unexpected companion brought peace and acceptance.
D. Walking dogs brings physical health benefits
C
The pangolin is a small animal covered in hard scales. It is now the world’s most heavily hunted and illegally traded wild animal. Its defence is simple: when in danger, it rolls into a tight ball. Yet this same habit has become its greatest weakness, for it makes the animal easy for hunters to pick up. Across Asia and Africa, pangolin scales are believed to work as medicine, and this belief has turned the shy creature into a top target for illegal hunters.
The trade is driven largely by demand in East Asia, where pangolin meat is a special dish and the scales are used in traditional medicine, though no benefit has ever been proven. A recent study found that hunters are active in Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, sending white-bellied pangolin scales through Nigeria before they reach China and other places. In 2016, all eight kinds of pangolins were placed under a global trade ban. The ban, however, has not ended the business: where the law is poorly followed, the illegal trade simply continues.
Saving the animals is no easier than catching the hunters. Pangolins are famously hard to keep alive in human care, often refusing to eat. Lisa Hywood, founder of a rescue centre in Zimbabwe, discovered that the only reliable way to feed them is to let them search for food naturally — walking them day or night to dig for ants and other insects. Her team records each animal’s weight carefully, because even the presence of strangers can make them lose weight. Recovered pangolins, such as number 24, are returned to the wild.
Protection now combines science and law. Wildlife protectors use tracking devices to study how pangolins live, and Nigerian authorities seized more than 28 tons of scales between 2021 and 2025. Still, experts warn that bans alone cannot solve the problem: as long as the demand lasts, reducing it will require a change over many years.
8. Why is the pangolin easy for hunters to catch?
A. It is too slow to run away. B. It cannot see well in the dark.
C. It sleeps in open places. D. It rolls into a ball when in danger.
9. What can be inferred about the 2016 global trade ban?
A. It was signed by only a few countries.
B. It has reduced demand in East Asia.
C. It works only where the law is followed.
D. It protects pangolins in every African country.
10. What difficulty do people face when rescuing pangolins?
A. Pangolins often refuse food under human care.
B. They have no place to set up rescue centres.
C. Pangolins run fast and are hard to track.
D. There is no law to protect rescued pangolins.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Long History of Wildlife Trade B. The Captive Feeding of Pangolins
C. The Medical Use of Pangolin Scales D. The Causes of Ongoing Pangolin Hunting
D
Language is not merely a communication tool but something that shapes our thinking. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis holds that language structures influence our world view. If so, AI writing tools do more than assist writing — they affect our cognitive processes.
Research on AI language standardization shows a paradox. AI can help people learn languages, enlarge vocabulary and preserve endangered languages with cheap translation tools. However, mainstream AI systems often produce polished, plain global English, diluting the diversity of dialects and various expressions.
When these AI tools become the standard choice, Western writing styles spread to other cultures. Algorithms tend to favour professional Western writing, smoothing out unique cultural metaphors. Poetic local proverbs turn into dull official statements, and indirect polite requests are changed into direct American-style orders. Gradually, it reshapes people's ideas about social manners and interpersonal relationships.
AI brings a standardizing effect on collective creativity. As everyone draws inspiration from the same algorithm source, creative diversity declines. Innovation calls for cognitive diversity, including different ways to analyze problems and varied thinking patterns. Once AI removes such differences, we may lose the source of creative breakthroughs.
AI is a cognitive tool, which may cause dependency or help us explore new ideas. The result depends on human users rather than the tool itself. The risk lies in passively accepting its default outputs. If we treat AI as a partner for creative discussion instead of simply using its ready-made answers, we can keep our unique viewpoints. As the generation familiar with life before ChatGPT, we should teach young people that algorithms provide structure, yet it is humans that supply soul.
12. What does the underlined word “diluting” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Weakening. B. Emphasizing.
C. Enhancing D. Maintaining.
13. How does the author demonstrate Western style's influence on other cultures?
A. By predicting results. B. By exploring reasons.
C. By providing examples. D. By making comparisons.
14. Why may AI threaten creative breakthroughs?
A. It offers people too many ready-made ideas.
B. It makes people rely on the same source of inspiration.
C. It prevents people from learning new algorithms.
D. It replaces human creativity with machine rules.
15. What is the author's idea regarding using AI?
A. Avoiding employing AI tools. B. Acquiring AI skills effectively.
C. Integrating different AI tools. D. Being the master of AI tools.
Many of us treat perfectionism as a virtue. In a job interview, people often say “I am a bit of a perfectionist” when asked about a weakness, and the boss usually smiles. ____16____ That price is paid quietly, in both worse work and poorer health.
Perfectionism is usually mistaken for a high standard, but the two are not the same. It is believed that high standards such as working hard, being diligent and staying committed are all fine. ____17____ It is not a habit at all but a way of seeing yourself. A student who works hard and still receives a poor mark may tell herself that she is only disappointed and still a good person. A perfectionist who gets a bad grade thinks “I am a failure” — which is clearly different.
While many see it as a character weakness, they rarely notice where it begins. ____18____ The public also underestimates how much a parent’s worry about the future feeds the habit: a child praised only for good marks learns that love comes with conditions, and weekly tests then repeat the same message every week.
____19____ When a student fears making a mistake, she avoids practice; less practice then leaves her weaker, which makes the next mistake feel larger. Each avoided task makes the next one heavier. By the end of the term the student is working twice as hard yet no better prepared. In one test that was impossible for everyone, the perfectionists kept trying while the others stopped.
A study found that very high personal standards brought almost no advantage, while perfectionists lost energy much faster. ____20____ Researchers are therefore testing something gentler: parents who talk openly about their own struggles, and who show their child is loved whatever the grade is.
A. Yet researchers now describe it as a public health problem.
B. One honest talk may break the habit for good.
C. In fact, perfectionism means chasing standards no one can reach.
D. Nor do they see how much home life feeds it.
E. Extra study-skills lessons may remove it in a term.
F. The habit then grows by itself, in a quiet circle.
G. Yet the relief faded when the next test came.

Two summers ago I travelled to a small hill station in the Western Himalayas, planning to hike its trails. I set out on a bright morning, the air gentle and inviting. Walking through bushes and trees, I reached a ridge top six hours later.
The view was breathtaking—snow-capped ranges on one side, rolling green valleys on the other. Below the ridge a few kiosks stood in a line, and I stopped at one for a meal. The vendor was a short elderly man. He served me hot tea and a bowl of noodles, and all the while he worked he kept looking up at the ridge, as if he were waiting for something. Smoke rose nonstop from the stove beside him.
Once he set down the cup and wiped his hands, still not looking at me. Two hikers on their way down told me fine weather would last until night; the old man just shook his head without a word. Before they left, he stared again into the gully.
As dusk fell and the air grew cold, the kiosk closed. I rented a small tent behind it, set it up on flat ground beside the path and turned off my lamp. The ground behind the kiosk sloped into a gully, and the rain had been gathering there all evening. Soon brown floodwater flowed through the gully. A lantern still burned over the kiosk door.
Worn out from hiking, I fell into heavy sleep. Lightning tore the dark sky and rain poured down. In the middle of the night, I woke up to the sound of the wind buffeting the cloth of my tent. Then, over the top of the wind, someone was shouting at my tent.

D. He couldn’t resist his instinct to explore
6. How did the author’s feelings change during the walks?

根据第二段的“Driven by his sharp sense of smell, he would tug me toward every scrap of leftover pizza or chicken nugget lying on the ground. At the mere sight of a squirrel (松鼠), he would fly into a frenzy, leaping and howling, as I struggled desperately to hold him in check.(受其敏锐嗅觉的驱使,他总是把我拽向地上每一块吃剩的披萨或炸鸡块。只要一看到松鼠,它就会陷入狂乱,上蹿下跳、狂吠不止,而我则拼命挣扎着想把它拉住。)”和第三段的“She explained that Casey was a hound — born to hunt.(她解释说,凯西是一只猎犬——天生就为了狩猎而生。)”
根据第四段的“My frustration softened into understanding, and eventually, into affection. Our walks were no longer a clash but a teamwork.(我的挫败感逐渐转化为理解,最终演变为温情。我们的散步不再是一种冲突,而成为了一种默契的协作。)”可知, 作者的情绪从挫败沮丧,慢慢变成理解, 最终化为喜爱。

D 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第一段“Its defence is simple: when in danger, it rolls into a tight ball. Yet this same habit has become its greatest weakness, for it makes the animal easy for hunters to pick up.(它的防御方式很简单:遇到危险就紧紧蜷缩成球。而这个习性成了它最大的弱点,让猎人可以轻易将它捡起。)”可知,穿山甲遇到危险时会蜷缩成球,因此容易被猎人捕捉。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“In 2016, all eight kinds of pangolins were placed under a global trade ban. The ban, however, has not ended the business: where the law is poorly followed, the illegal trade simply continues.(2016 年,全部八种穿山甲被列入全球贸易禁令。但这项禁令并未终止非法交易:在法律执行不到位的地方,非法交易仍在继续。)”可知,这项禁令只在法律得到遵守的地方才起作用。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Pangolins are famously hard to keep alive in human care, often refusing to eat.(众所周知穿山甲很难在人工照料下存活,它们经常拒食。)”
A 13. C 14. B 15. D

根据划线句“However, mainstream AI systems often produce polished, plain global English, diluting the diversity of dialects and various expressions.(然而,主流人工智能系统往往生成规范、平淡的通用英语,diluting方言和各类表达的多样性。)” 选项A(Weakening,削弱)符合语境。
根据第三段“Algorithms tend to favour professional Western writing, smoothing out unique cultural metaphors. Poetic local proverbs turn into dull official statements, and indirect polite requests are changed into direct American-style orders.(算法倾向于青睐西式专业写作,剔除独特的文化隐喻。富有诗意的本土谚语变成枯燥的官方表述,委婉礼貌的请求被改成美式直白的命令。)”可知,作者列举谚语、请求句式被改写的事例来证明西式写作风格对其他文化的影响。
【14题详解】

第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)
A 17. C 18. D 19. F 20. B
空前“Many of us treat perfectionism as a virtue. In a job interview, people often say “I am a bit of a perfectionist” when asked about a weakness, and the boss usually smiles.(我们当中许多人将完美主义视为一种美德。在求职面试中,当被问到缺点时,人们常常会说“我有点追求完美”,而老板通常都会露出微笑)”讲很多人将完美主义视作美德,面试时人们自称完美主义者,老板往往一笑。空后“That price is paid quietly, in both worse work and poorer health.(这个代价是默默付出的,体现在更差的工作和更糟糕的健康状况上)”讲述这种代价就是在暗中要付出,指代完美主义带来的负面影响。
根据首句“Perfectionism is usually mistaken for a high standard, but the two are not the same.(完美主义通常被误认为是高标准,但两者并不相同)”可知,本段主要区分高标准与完美主义。上文“It is believed that high standards such as working hard, being diligent and staying committed are all fine.(人们认为,努力工作、勤奋踏实和坚持不懈等高标准都是值得肯定的)”提到像勤奋、坚持这类高标准是有益的。空后“It is not a habit at all but a way of seeing yourself. (它根本不是一种习惯,而是看待自我的一种方式)”讲的是完美主义是看待自我的方式,举例普通学生和完美主义者拿到低分的不同想法。因此推断C选项 “事实上,完美主义意味着追逐无人能够达到的标准”承接上文,解释完美主义的本质,引出下文的对比举例,符合语境。
【18题详解】
空前“While many see it as a character weakness, they rarely notice where it begins.(尽管许多人认为这是性格上的弱点,但他们很少注意到它从何处开始)”讲述虽然很多人把完美主义看作性格缺陷, 但很少注意它的起源。空后“The public also underestimates how much a parent’s worry about the future feeds the habit: a child praised only for good marks learns that love comes with conditions, and weekly tests then repeat the same message every week.(公众也低估了父母对未来的担忧如何助长这种习惯:一个只因成绩好而受到表扬的孩子,会明白爱是有条件的,而每周的测验则不断重复着同样的信息)”讲述公众也低估了父母对未来的担忧会助长这个习惯。 句中Nor do they see与上文中they rarely notice呼应;同时与后文also underestimates形成递进关系,引出家庭因素,符合语境。
本段后文“When a student fears making a mistake, she avoids practice; less practice then leaves her weaker, which makes the next mistake feel larger. Each avoided task makes the next one heavier. By the end of the term the student is working twice as hard yet no better prepared. In one test that was impossible for everyone, the perfectionists kept trying while the others stopped.
前文“A study found that very high personal standards brought almost no advantage, while perfectionists lost energy much faster.(一项研究发现,过高的个人标准几乎不会带来任何优势,而完美主义者则会更快地失去精力)”讲述研究表明极高的个人标准几乎没有益处,完美主义者精力消耗更快。空后“Researchers are therefore testing something gentler: parents who talk openly about their own struggles, and who show their child is loved whatever the grade is.(因此,研究人员正在测试一种更温和的做法:父母坦诚地谈论自己的困难,并向孩子表明无论成绩如何,他们都被爱着)”讲述研究者正在测试更温和的方式:父母坦诚谈论自身困境,向孩子表明无论成绩如何,孩子都被爱着。

Paragraph 1:
“Wake up! Come out!” someone cried, urgent and wild. The ridge was giving way, the gully roaring. Rain lashed the canvas; my hands could not find the zipper. “Out! The gully!” he shouted, threw himself at the canvas, tore the flap back and dragged me out. Behind us the tent tore away into the dark. He flung me behind a rock and bent his back over me as the water passed. I knelt in the mud, alive and shaking, thanking him over and over.
Paragraph 2:
The old man led me back to his small shop. By the lantern I spotted him. Small and stooped, he had long white hair and a thick beard stuck to his face, as if he had walked out of the gully. The kiosk sank into mud, with only his plastic-covered bed, a stove and a bag remaining. He let me rest on the bed while he lay on the back floor. When morning came, the sky cleared. The vendor served me hot tea. Grateful, I asked how I could repay him. Smiling softly and folding his hands, he replied, “Just good wishes.”
