M:Good morning!Can I help you?
W:Oh,yes.I left a bag when I was shopping. It's brown leather and quite old and it's got a pocket on the front.
M:All right.I'll look at my list.
(Text 2)
M:Sid,hi,so sorry I can't meet you for dinner at six thirty.
W:Oh,okay, what time will you get here?
M:By seven o'clock at the latest,I think. There was a car crash ahead of me just ten minutes ago.
(Text 3)
M:Did you enjoy your holiday in Australia,Annie?
W:Yes,but it was wet most of the time.
M:Really?Isn't it always sunny and hot in Australia?
W:Not when I was there.
(Text 4)
W:Do you know where our food is?We've been here for almost half an hour.
M:I'm sorry. It must be ready now.I'll go and check.
(Text 5)
M:Your piano teacher said you wanted to quit the lessons. You know you don't have to worry about the money.
W:No,dad. It's just that I've realized my true interest lies in solving difficult math problems.Music is just not
my thing.
(Text 6)
W:The department store has reduced all its prices by forty percent during the sale.Don't you think it's time to
replace our sofa? We've had it for a long time.
M:Do you think so?I think it's comfortable enough. What we really need is a proper lamp to go on the table
next to the sofa. It's impossible to sit and read there at the moment.
W:Let's move one of the lamps down from the bedroom then. The blue one would look good on that table.
M:You're right.
(Text 7)
M:I made us a pizza for tonight's dinner.I baked apple pie, made the tomato sauce from our tomatoes in the
backyard and I bought the cheese from a local farm about five miles away.
W:Yum!I can't wait to eat it.You've been cooking a lot lately. Why the change?
M:I've gotten really into watching cooking shows.I've been interested in cooking for a long time, but I just
decided to give it a try recently.
W:I'm an OK cook,but I don't enjoy it very much.It takes a lot of patience which I don't have.
(Text 8)
W:Sorry,Peter.I can't go on a trip with you this weekend. It's my mother's birthday. She has made plans
with our entire family for the weekend.
M:No worries,Cindy.I just finished a big work project,so I thought I'd take a short trip.That sounds fun,
though. What will you and your family do?
W:We'll go around the city.We have so much fun together from playing games to riding bicycles around town.
But my absolute favorite activity is cooking food with my grandmother. We always prepare large lunches for
the family.
M:That sounds like such a fun weekend.
W:Definitely.Where will you go?
M:Either to the beach or to the mountains. My brother's wife is away,so I'll travel and spend the weekend
with him.But he is such a beach person,so we're very likely to spend our days surfing and swimming in the sea.

brother Mike when my brother put a piece of a toy in his mouth.
W:When did you notice it?
M:I didn't notice until I found he was fighting for breath.
W:What did you do?
M:I immediately asked Jason to find my father, who was somewhere near the house, but then I noticed Mike
was turning purple.
W:You must have been very worried.
M:Certainly,but I knew what I should do.Luckily I'd learned how to perform first aid skills.Finally I helped
Mike cough up that little thing.
W:You're really great.Without you, your brother might have been in great danger.
M:Yes.When my father finally came,Mike was crying, but he was totally fine.
W:Good. Can you share your story a bit later in class today?

W:Duolingo is a free language-learning website and app.It offers ad-free courses for those who want to learn a
new language. As of 2016,Duolingo has fifty-nine different language courses for twenty-three languages.
Over 120 million people are registered with the program.Duolingo was created in 2011 by Professor Luis
von Ahn and his graduate student Severin Hacker, who was born in Switzerland.Professor Luis von Ahn
was born in Guatemala, and he was upset by how expensive it was for people in his town to learn English.
He wanted to create a program that offered free education to anyone in the world.Because most of the
services are available free of charge,Duolingo originally used a special business model to make money.
Members of the public were able to translate content and vote on correct translations. The content came
from large websites such as BuzzFeed and CNN,which paid Duolingo to translate their webpages. Many
private investors have given money to the company, including actor Ashton Kutcher's firm.Duolingo has
also been used in public schools in Costa Rica and Guatemala.

Banff National Park: A Magical Winter Destination
Banff National Park turns into a magical winter destination, offering world-class skiing, breathtaking frozen waterfalls, and impressive castle-like hotels. Even with its global fame, the park’s winter beauty truly goes beyond expectations. The combination of ice, snow, and amazing mountain scenery creates a uniquely peaceful and charming atmosphere.
Winter Season & Events
Winter lasts from November to May, making it ideal for downhill skiing, snowboarding, and ice climbing. The best time for ice climbing is between December and February, while the best snow conditions for skiing are typically in February or March. After dark, the Banff Gondola offers “Nightrise” — a multimedia experience with lights and sound at the top of Sulphur Mountain.
Planning Your Visit
Both the town of Banff and Lake Louise are located within the national park, so all visitors must buy a park pass. Getting to the park is convenient, with bus services available from Calgary Airport. Within Banff, the Roam Public Transit system and free ski buses make transportation easy.
Accommodation & Dining
Visitors can choose from a wide range of accommodations, from high-end hotels such as the Fairmont Banff Springs and Fairmont Château Lake Louise to family-friendly options like the Lake Louise Inn. Miniatures (微缩模型) of the television and film sets that you love are so detailed that you think you are looking at photos of Monica’s living room from Friends, the comic store from The Big Bang Theory, or Flourish and Blotts bookshop from Harry Potter. They are the creations of Los Angeles artist Bridget McCarty whose attention to detail is absolutely amazing.
McCarty has not only recreated the sets, according to My Modern Met, she has also included tiny items (小物品) of what made the sets memorable. The miniatures are so detailed that it can take up to a month to complete one.
McCarty was inspired by the miniatures her grandmother collected. As a child, she was never allowed to touch those fine items, which made her even more attracted to them.
McCarty began making miniatures as a hobby while she was studying animation (动画) in school but she soon started going to exhibitions and set up a small online shop. People were so fascinated by her work that it became a full-time job when she was 22.
“Other artists bought my pieces and that motivated me to keep it up,” said McCarty.
McCarty makes them from what she described as “anything you can imagine”. “When I go to the craft store, watch my favorite TV shows and movies, and visit theme parks or other places, my mind will be blown by ideas,” she said.
The miniature sets are doll-sized rooms that are made from wooden boxes and are dimensionally 50cm or less. The scale (尺寸) is perfect even to the food being cooked in a kitchen and the tiny bag of chips being poured into an equally tiny bowl.
“Though each work takes a lot of time and energy, I love having a finished piece and knowing I used my best skills to create it,” she said. “It can really take you away to another world and inspire many more people.”
24. Why are the television and film sets mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To highlight the significance of art appreciation.
B. To prove the popularity of McCarty’s art pieces.
C. To show how amazing McCarty’s creations are.
D. To illustrate the procedure of creating miniatures.
25. What caused McCarty to fall in love with miniatures?
A. Her college major. B. Her grandmother’s collections.
C. Other artists’ recognition. D. Frequent visits to exhibitions.
26. What does McCarty do to create her work?
A. Draw inspiration from daily experiences.
B. Take up many roles in the film industry.
C. Complete each piece within a few days.
D. Copy designs from other miniature artists.
27. What does McCarty think of creating miniatures?
A. Useless but relaxing. B. Effortless and inspiring.
C. Challenging but meaningful. D. Time-consuming and uninteresting.
C
According to NASA, wildfires have doubled worldwide because of climate change. Throughout the globe, governments and environmentalists have been trying to find ways to curb the fires. One particular national park in Spain has found a solution that has been keeping it fire-free for over ten years: donkeys (驴).
Since 2014, the Firefighting Donkey Battalion made up of 18 donkeys has been preventing wildfires in Donana National Park in Donana, Spain. The mission of these donkeys is simple: to eat the dry brush that usually causes and strengthens wildfires. The donkeys spend up to seven hours a day grazing (吃草) and clearing a 130 by 50 feet area of dried grass, scrub, and other vegetation (植被).
While humans can do this type of dry brush clearing, using donkeys for this work is arguably more effective. Donkeys are able to quietly walk in areas that vehicles can’t reach. In exchange for finishing the meal, the donkeys get lots of water and rest. No money or other supplies needed. The donkeys’ bodies are also built for this kind of environmental work, too. Their stomachs can eat dry grass repeatedly without issues. These daily grazings slowly but surely remove possible sources of fires.
Having donkeys or other animals graze in such areas was once more common in agriculture before modern farming. Some argue that the mechanization of farming and urbanization have reduced the number of grazing animals. This in turn leads to more vegetation growth, which creates dry spots where more wildfires can occur.
This method has been so successful that other areas of Spain have adopted it. In 2020, Tivissa started the Burros Bomberos project with three donkeys, and now they have 40 donkeys grazing and clearing nearly 400 hectares of land. The Andrea Association in Allariz uses a team of donkeys to clear and maintain nearly 1,000 hectares of a biosphere reserve. According to the GPS used to monitor the donkeys’ activity, the group of grazers travel 19 kilometers per day to feed.
28. What does the underlined word “curb” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Forecast. B. Control. C. Monitor. D. Survive.
29. What are the 18 donkeys expected to do?
A. Figure out signs of wildfires. B. Help firefighters put out wildfires.
C. Eat fresh grass in several parks. D. Remove possible sources of fires.
30. What does paragraph 3 focus on concerning donkeys?
A. Their responsibilities. B. Their advantages.
C. Their survival strategies. D. Their incredible achievements.
31. What can be known about the method?
A. It threatens donkeys’ lives. B. It is limited to farmland.
C. It is widely accepted. D. It was uncommon in the past.
D
More than a generation ago, email was an exciting novelty. When the magic words “you’ve got mail” popped on the screen, people raced to their computers to view their messages. Email ended the wait for the postman along with the need to search for paper and stamps to respond.
Now, change is in the air. As Gen Z embraces a lifestyle that values slower and more intentional ways of connecting, old-fashioned “snail mail” is regaining its popularity.
“Physical mail creates a pause (暂停),” Atlanta-based artist and graphic design student Jaylan Birdsong tells Dazed. “It asks you to slow down, touch paper, sit with an image, tape it to a wall, or place it into a journal.”
Birdsong said sharing her work online with her fans often made it feel as though it was disappearing into a void (空白). That feeling helped inspire the Perch Post, a mail club that sends a themed monthly envelope filled with her printed creations. What started as 25 fans has grown into a community of 1,600 and the number continues to rise.
People are also longing for connection, and pen pal services offer that free of charge, The Guardian reports. Writer Rachel Symes may be the fairy godmother of modern pen pals. As a health crisis hit in spring, 2020, Symes started the pen-pal matching service Penpalooza to connect people through physical letters. Today, more than 15,000 people have signed up for the service.
Symes tells The Guardian that as an outgoing person, hearing from people brings her joy. She also believes the positive impact goes both ways. “Know that your letter will be met with absolute excitement,” she says. “Whatever you put in the mail, even if it does not rise to the great letter-writing heights that you someday hope to reach, it is still a surprise on its way to enliven someone’s mailbox.”
Unlike email, which gets removed in a flash or lost in an overloaded inbox, letters can be stored in a carefully decorated box, treasured and reread over and over. When it comes to sparking joy, there is nothing like a letter in the mailbox.
32. What phenomenon is described in paragraph 1?
A. Computers were hardly seen. B. Email was highly popular.
C. People were closely connected. D. Various lifestyles were exchanged.
33. Why did Birdsong set up the Perch Post?
A. To battle loneliness.
B. To collect others’ creations.

Since Lena entered high school, the diary had become her only trusted friend. She told it everything that had happened at home or in school: the hurtful moments with her mother, the occasional unfair treatments received from her teachers and the bittersweet relationships with her classmates.
One rainy afternoon, Lena returned home, heartbroken, and went to look for her diary under the pillow. When she found it missing from its usual spot, panic set in.
“Did Mom take it?” she thought.
She stormed into her mother’s bedroom and found her reading the diary. Even worse, she saw a half-finished love poem on the bedside table. It was a present Lena prepared for her classmate!
“What are you doing on earth?” Lena yelled. “This is my privacy!”
“Calm down, sweetheart!” Mom said, trying to draw her close. “The roof leaked this afternoon. I was cleaning up the mess in your room when I found your diary under the wet pillow. I couldn’t help reading it while I was drying it.”
“Give it back to me, now!” Lena demanded. “I hate you! I’ll never forgive you!”
Mom returned the diary and apologized, “I just want to check and keep you safe!”
“Keep me safe?” Lena cut in. “You just want to control me!”
Lena grabbed the diary and ran back to her own room. Sitting in the darkness, Lena felt her heart sinking. She was very upset that her deepest secrets — especially her complaints about Mom — had been exposed.
However, when she opened the diary, she found something strange. On the page where she wrote “I hate you!”, she found a familiar handwriting: “Lena, I noticed you wrote this after our argument. I’m sorry for hurting you. — Mom” Curiously, Lena read through the diary and saw that every negative entry was accompanied by a note: encouragement after exam failures, comfort during moments of loneliness and apologies for misunderstandings.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As she read on, Lena felt her chest filled with something warm.
As Lena turned to leave, she was held tightly by her mother.
