Every year, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, and people
all around the world celebrate this day by taking part in
environmental activities and working towards raising awareness
of important issues that our planet Earth is currently facing, like
global warming and pollution.
Before the 1970s, there were almost no environmental laws
and industries were allowed to dump their industrial waste and

fumes anywhere in the world. A US senator by the name of
Gaylord Nelson was concerned about the growing levels of
pollution. So in the spring of 1970, Senator Nelson created
Earth Day as a way to promote awareness of these issues in
the US. His plan was successful, as 20 million Americans started
a demonstration (示威游行) for Earth Day around the world. As
a result, the US government started an agency called the US
Environmental Protection Agency. Over the next few years, the
movement spread across the world and Earth Day became
internationally recognized.

The theme of Earth Day 2021 was “restore our Earth”. The
focus of the theme was restoring Earth's natural processes and
ecosystems. Apart from that, its goal was to focus on taking
green technologies and innovative actions to restore the Earth's
natural ecosystems. More than stopping pollution and global
warming, Earth Day 2021 focused on reversing the damage
caused to the Earth.
Despite strict environmental laws in many countries across
the world, problems such as global warming, air pollution and

climate change continue to threaten our planet. Many scientists
around the world are warning us about the already irreversible
problems that have been created by microplastics, oil spills and
depletion (消耗) of the ozone layer. If the human race continues
on the same path as before, the extinction of the human race
is not too far off in the future. Earth Day seeks to help raise
people's awareness around the world of these issues and bring
positive changes, so future generations stand a chance of living
a safer life.#1.4

New research suggests people may not always want help in
sticking to their New Year's resolutions, challenging the common
view of a “planner-doer” conflict in behavioural science.
A team from UK and German universities surveyed 240
adults to explore how people identify with their “planner”
(self-control-focused) and “doer” (desire-driven) selves. Published
in Behavioural Public Policy, the study found that while
participants differed in the relative importance they attached to

desire and self-control, overall, attitudes in favour of desire were
almost as common as attitudes in favour of self-control.
Public policies designed to “push” people towards healthy
lifestyles are often based on the grounds that people think of
their planners as their true selves and dislike the actions of their
doers. However, in their study published today in the journal
Behavioural Public Policy, the authors argue this assumption
overlooks the possibility that people value desire as well as self-
control and approve of their own flexible attitudes to
resolutions.

Robert Sugden, a professor of economics at UEA, said, “Our
key message is not about whether pushes towards healthy
lifestyles are good for people's long-term health or happiness. It
is about whether such pushes can be based on the grounds
that they help individuals to overcome what they themselves
acknowledge as self-control problems.” For example, respondents
favoured desire for sugary drinks or desserts yet prioritized self-
control for exercise—viewing small indulgences (享受) as positive
expressions of desire.

In the online survey, participants recalled either a joyful
meal or a satisfying health effort, and then expressed their
opinions about self-control and desire. Surprisingly, the
differences in recalled episode didn't significantly affect their
attitudes. Most agreed both long-term planning and occasional
small joys were important.
The study concludes identifying when people want help with
self-control is more complex than thought, emphasizing that
desires deserve equal attention. Breaking a health-oriented
resolution by ordering a dessert is perhaps a more positive way
than not taking one's daily run on a wet day.#1.6
