Vera C. Rubin, born on July 23, 1928 in Philadelphia, discovered astronomy at age ten after her family moved to Washington, D.C. Fascinated by the night sky, she recalled, “I decided at an early age that we inhabit a very curious world.” She built a simple telescope with her father and began tracking meteors, sparking a lifelong passion.
Rubin’s high school physics teacher had discouraged her, saying, “As long as you stay away from science, you should do OK.” Despite the doubt, she was successfully admitted into Vassar College as the only astronomy major there in 1944. When Rubin earned her degree in 1948, she applied for graduate school at Princeton. Though Princeton rejected her because she was a woman, Rubin pursued astronomy at Cornell University, receiving a master’s degree in 1951.
By 1955, she was hired by Georgetown University, where she researched and taught for ten years. A year prior to Rubin’s final year of teaching, she was invited to observe at California’s Palomar Observatory, where women were prohibited from utilizing the main telescope. There she noticed the only bathroom present was designated for men. In protest, she drew a skirt on the door symbol. When she returned later, a gender-neutral bathroom was added.
In 1965, Rubin joined the Carnegie Institution. There, she met her long-time collaborator, Kent Ford. During the 1970s, they deduced from the swirling motion of distant galaxies that there was more to the universe than what met the telescopic eye, an invisible substance known as dark matter. Astronomer Sandra Faber later called this “one of the major achievements of modern cosmology (宇宙学)”.
Rubin remained active in research for decades and became a dedicated mentor, actively supporting women in science. She seized opportunities to uplift the next generation of astronomers.
Vera Rubin died at age 88. Her wonder lives on in the observatory that bears her name. What she left us is more than a telescope. It is a blueprint for humanity—to be curious, never assume, and above all be kind.
4. What aroused her enthusiasm for astronomy?
A. Her father’s supportive words. B. Her curiosity about the night sky.
C. Her teacher’s encouragement. D. Her move to Washington, D.C.
5. When was Rubin invited to observe at the Palomar Observatory?
A. 1955. B. 1956. C. 1964. D. 1965.
6. What does the underlined word “designated” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. Labeled. B. Conducted. C. Increased. D. Prohibited.
7. What words can be used to best describe Rubin?
A. Inspiring but reserved. B. Sensitive but persistent.
C. Daring and insightful. D. Curious and careless.

Researchers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the University of Cologne (UC) in Germany have developed an AI-based learning system.
The idea is simple yet effective: a webcam (网络摄像头) tracks students’ eye movements. Maike Schindler, a math professor from the UC, and her team have designed hundreds of math tasks involving basic math skills. Depending on the task, specific patterns appear, which are shown digitally on a heat map, with red indicating areas where the children look frequently and green showing the areas where they look only briefly. Confident students quickly get to key problem areas, while struggling ones often look aimlessly.
“Tracking eye movements helps recognize different learning strategies through patterns and finally create detailed support reports for teachers,” says Maike Schindler. “The AI system sorts the patterns. On the basis, the software selects tailored learning videos and exercises for the pupil,” says robotics professor Achim Lilienthal from the TUM.
To develop the new eye-tracking technology, Professor Lilienthal has drawn on his robotics research experience. In that work, he used eye trackers with a small human-like robot named Nao. It enables better communication with humans. However, these advanced systems with high accuracy cost many thousands of euros.
To find a better solution for schools, the researchers cleverly mix technical experience with math knowledge. Instead of using high-end eye-trackers, their AI-driven approach uses regular webcams and makes up for low accuracy through AI improvements. “By focusing on problem areas, the AI adapts the eye-tracking with the webcam, achieving accuracy comparable to high-end tools,” professor Lilienthal says.
Germany’s Wulfen Comprehensive School is the first to introduce the system. A math test there showed that about one-third of the new students struggled with basic math. With the AI system, one teacher can now support five students at once — a significant improvement over traditional one-on-one teaching. “As education faces teacher shortages and increasing pressure to deal with individual learning styles, our system for promoting basic math skills is simply excellent support for schools,” says Schindler.
8. What is the function of the heat map?
A. Presenting students’ focus areas.
B. Measuring the difficulty of math tasks.
C. Tracking the eye movements of students.
D. Comparing students’ problem-solving speeds.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The system’s advantages in recognizing eye problems.
B. The system’s role in supporting personalized learning.
C. The system’s challenges in tracking student behavior.
D. The system’s progress in upgrading specific patterns.
10. Which best describes the AI-driven eye-tracking technology?
A. Helpful but slow. B. Simple and relaxing.
C. Creative but costly. D. Affordable and effective.
11. What does Wulfen Comprehensive School get from the system?
A. Reduction in teacher training. B. Adaptation to learning needs.
C. Inspiration for advanced math. D. Absence of human judgment.
D
Warming seas across the globe are endangering coral reefs (珊瑚礁), a key ecosystem that supports marine life to live and thrive. As a possible way to save them from extinction, scientists have recently frozen and revived groups of adult corals for the first time, according to a recent study.
Freezing biological materials, or “cryopreserving” them, refers to keeping them in a deep freeze for long periods without affecting the cell’s viability (活性), according to the Science Times website.
This method usually cools them to very low temperatures, commonly to -196℃. Since cells would normally die at such a low temperature due to the formation of ice inside, scientists need to monitor the freezing rate and choose the freezing medium carefully.
Researchers in the US experimented with freezing pea-sized pieces of a common coral in Hawaii. After removing the microbes on the corals, they sealed the corals in metal containers filled with a chemical solution that partially dehydrated (脱水) them and helped control ice growth.
When the corals reached a temperature of around -200℃, the remaining water in the corals solidified into a glassy form. The corals were still alive, with their life-driving functions becoming extremely slow. After being cryopreserved for a few minutes, the researchers pulled the corals out and placed them in warm water. In two minutes, they started consuming oxygen — a sign of them staying alive.
Previously, researchers had already successfully cryopreserved coral larvae (幼虫), according to a study in 2018. However, the larvae can only be collected when corals lay eggs, which happens just a few nights each year. “That’s putting a lot of eggs in one basket,” US marine scientist Liza Roger told Science News.
This breakthrough offers more hope to the world’s corals, said Roger. However, there’s more work to be done. A few days after thawing (解冻), the corals became “stressed out” from the process and were killed by the bacteria they normally live in harmony with. The researchers are working on using antibiotics to help them survive for a longer period of time.
12. What is the purpose of the recent study?
A. To bring dead corals back to life. B. To freeze and revive coral larvae.
C. To find a way to preserve corals. D. To study the conditions of coral growth.
13. What happened to the corals when they were cryopreserved?
A. They died for the time being. B. Their life functions slowed down.
C. They remained alive and unchanged. D. They fed on microbes in the containers.
14. What does Roger think about cryopreserving coral larvae?
A. It is not a reliable solution. B. It needs a large number of eggs.
C. It holds promise for restoring corals. D. It requires overly expensive technology.
15. What issue do the researchers still need to approach?
A. Finding a suitable freezing medium. B. Identifying the bacteria on the corals.
C. Expanding the collection of coral larvae. D. Maintaining the corals’ health after thawing.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
There was a busy street corner beside a bus station. Pupils changed buses going to or from school there. This small area was anything but appealing: loud cars and buses passed by, and tall gray buildings looked like big stone giants.
Peter was one of the kids who had to wait here for nine and a half minutes each day to change buses. The station had a strong gas smell. The land nearby, maybe once a garden, was now full of trash — cans, paper bags, and chicken boxes. Weeds (草) grew wild all around them. There was nowhere nice to walk and nothing to look at. Hanging around like that each day almost drove Peter mad. Most kids wasted their time complaining (抱怨) about all the mess, but Peter felt restless. He knew he couldn’t do anything to change the bus company’s timetable and its bus routes but he could make these waiting minutes more enjoyable for himself and others.
He asked his mom for a pair of gloves and some trash bags. That week, he filled his nine minutes each day by picking up the waste. As he piled the waste into bags, “Why trouble yourself? It’ll just get dirty again!” his classmates laughed at him, casually throwing used tissues, candy wrappers and cans around. Silent for a while, Peter continued picking up the waste his classmates dropped, thinking, “It seems like an impossible dream to change this deserted land. Should I give up just as my classmates said?”
One afternoon, an elderly man approached Peter. “I used to garden here years ago,” he said, handing Peter some sunflower seeds (种子). “Perhaps you can plant these. You know, sunflowers grow easily in hard environments.” Inspired by the elderly man, Peter saw hope again. The next week, Peter occupied himself weeding the field and soon this piece of land was cleared up.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Next, he took out the sunflower seeds offered by the elderly man.

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】
Next, he took out the sunflower seeds offered by the elderly man. Peter knelt on the broken ground, loosened the soil, and carefully planted the seeds. His classmates laughed again, “Flowers can’t grow here.” But Peter watered the seeds every day. Days later, small green plants came up from the dry ground. Everyone was surprised and stopped laughing. When a hot wave hit, Peter skipped his lunch to cover the plants with cardboard. One day, a girl who used to litter brought water for the plants. Soon, other kids helped too, watering the young flowers while they waited for buses.
More kids began to help take care of the plants. Their laughter mixed with the sound of water cans. The sunflowers grew taller each day. At the end of summer, they were taller than the kids, with big yellow flowers facing the sun, as if waving at the buses and the kids around them. Butterflies flew among the flowers, and kids’ laughter filled the corner. They called the garden “Peter’s Patch”.
