Dear Student Council,
I am writing to suggest an activity for our Sportsmanship Week.
I suggest holding a Sports Rules Quiz next Wednesday afternoon in the hall. Students from different classes can form teams of four. Each team will discuss picture cards showing situations such as a disagreement during a match.
The activity will help us understand respect because we must consider both sides before explaining a decision. Working out an answer together will also develop cooperation. Winning the quiz should depend on clear reasons, rather than the loudest voice.
To keep the event organised, we can invite PE teachers to check the questions beforehand and explain the rules at the start. Every member should have a chance to speak.
I hope you will consider my suggestion.
Yours,
Li Hua

A week before our school basketball final, our opponents lost their practice space. A pipe had burst in their gym, and the floor needed repairs. When our captain, Aaron, suggested sharing our practice time, I thought he was ____11____. We were about to play against them. Why make their preparation easier?
Aaron did not ask us to give up our own training. He suggested that we use half the court for separate drills, then play a short practice game together. Our coach agreed, provided that both teams followed the same ____12____. Everyone would arrive on time and help leave the court ready for the next users.
At the first shared session, we stayed on our side and spoke very little. Then a ball rolled between the groups. A player from the visiting team picked it up and passed it back with a smile. Gradually, the ____13____ atmosphere began to change.
During the practice game, I discovered how well their centre moved without the ball. I had to think more ____14____ about where to stand. Afterward, he asked how I kept my balance when turning. We were still rivals, but we were learning ____15____ each other.
On the day of the final, we lost by two points. For a moment, my old doubt returned: had sharing the court helped them ____16____ us? Then I remembered the chances we had created and the mistakes we still needed to work on. Blaming our guests would have been an easy ____17____ for ignoring the things we needed to improve.
After the match, their captain thanked us. Without the shared space, they would have missed several practices. I finally understood Aaron’s decision. A fair competition requires opponents who have a real chance to ____18____. We had gone all out to win, and we could still be ____19____ of the way we had treated the other team. The final score separated us, but respect ____20____ us.

A
A school reporter is preparing a news item about the Spring Run, an event in which students ran to raise money for the school’s book fund. Before sending her article to the editor, she compares her notes with the organiser’s final record. The event is open to all three grades. Students may stop after any completed lap; finishing more laps does not earn a medal.
The organiser explains that a registered runner is not necessarily a finisher. In this record, a finisher means a student who completed at least one lap. Students who registered but did not run are not included in that number. The money column shows the amount actually received by the end of each event day, not the amount people had promised to give.
Event year

Last year

¥3,200
This year

150
¥3,600
Draft 1: This year’s Spring Run attracted more registered runners and had more finishers than last year. It also raised ¥400 more for the book fund.
Draft 2: Every student who registered completed a lap, and the event raised more money than any other school event in history.
The editor accepts the main claims in Draft 1 but asks the reporter to revise Draft 2. There are no records of other school events in the material. She also suggests interviewing a runner who stopped after one lap, rather than speaking only to those who ran the longest distances. Different experiences can help readers understand what participation meant.
The reporter decides to end the article with an update about how the money will be used. The book fund plans to buy books selected by students from all three grades. The final selection has not yet been made, so the report must distinguish a plan from an action that has already happened.
21.According to the organiser’s definition, who counts as a finisher?
A.A student who signed the registration form.
B.A student who promised to support the fund.
C.A student who completed at least one lap.
D.A student who ran the longest distance.
22.Which statement is supported by the table?
A.This year’s event raised ¥400 more than last year’s.
B.Every registered runner finished in both years.
C.Fewer students finished this year than last year.
D.The table records money promised for next year.
23.Why does the editor reject the claim about “any other school event in history”?
A.The book fund has already spent all the money.
B.Only Grade Nine students took part in the run.
C.The event did not receive any money at all.
D.The available records do not allow that comparison.
24.What is the main reason for interviewing a runner who stopped after one lap?
A.To prove that running farther is always harmful.
B.To include an experience beyond those of the longest-distance runners.
C.To remove that student from the list of finishers.
D.To explain why the book fund should be closed.
25.Which ending accurately reports the book fund’s next step?
A.The fund has bought every book students requested.
B.The organisers will give all the money to the fastest runner.
C.Students’ choices will help decide which books the fund buys.
D.The final book list was completed before registration.

At a medal ceremony, cameras usually focus on the medals. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, however, a small pin (徽章) in a badminton player’s hand drew attention for a different reason. China’s He Bingjiao had won the women’s singles silver medal. As she stood on the podium (领奖台), she held up a pin of the Spanish Olympic Committee.
The gesture was connected with her semi-final opponent, Spain’s Carolina Marin. Marin had won the opening game and was leading in the second when an injury forced her to stop. She could not continue the match. He went through to the final and later lost to South Korea’s An Se-young.
Marin was unable to play in the bronze-medal match either, so she left the competition without a medal. He could not change that result. By carrying the Spanish pin to the ceremony, though, she made sure that her absent opponent was remembered at a moment of Olympic celebration.
The Spanish Olympic Committee publicly thanked He for her action. The meaning of the pin did not depend on its size or price. It stood for respect between competitors from different countries.
Sport asks athletes to try to outperform one another. Yet their effort does not require them to stop caring about the people across the net. He’s action offers a way to understand the Olympic idea of togetherness: competition can separate the results while respect remains shared.
Adapted from reports by NBC Olympics and Shanghai Observer on the Paris 2024 Olympics.
26.Why did He Bingjiao hold the Spanish pin at the ceremony?
A.To remember and support her injured opponent.
B.To announce that she would play for Spain.
C.To ask the judges to change the final score.
D.To show that she had won the gold medal.
27.What happened in the semi-final before Marin stopped playing?
A.He had already won the match.
B.Both players had received medals.
C.Marin was ahead in the match.
D.The medal ceremony had begun.
28.What does the underlined word “absent” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Unable to win a final.
B.Not present at a place.
C.Unwilling to play fairly.
D.Already well known.
29.Why does the writer say the pin’s meaning did not depend on its size or price?
A.The pin was larger than an Olympic medal.
B.All Olympic pins have the same price.
C.The writer knows exactly how much it cost.
D.Its value lay in the respect it represented.
30.Which statement best reflects the writer’s view?
A.Athletes should avoid trying to beat their friends.
B.Respectful competitors should receive the same medal.
C.Trying to win and caring for an opponent can go together.
D.A ceremony is more important than every sporting event.

During a football lesson, a teacher gives a team an unusual challenge: before anyone can shoot, every teammate must touch the ball. A student objects that this is not a rule in an ordinary match. The teacher agrees. The class is practising how to notice teammates, not playing a formal competition. That difference matters.
A practice game does not have to copy a full match in every detail. A coach may create constraints: limits such as a smaller playing area, fewer players or a special passing rule. These limits can draw attention to a skill that is easily overlooked in a normal game. If one confident player always keeps the ball, the others get few chances to make decisions. A temporary rule can change what the group has to notice.
However, a changed rule is not automatically a useful rule. It should connect with a clear learning purpose. Suppose a team needs to improve communication. A rule that rewards the longest throw may encourage power but do little to help players listen. Asking players to say a teammate’s name before passing is more closely connected with the problem. The test is not whether a game feels unusual, but whether it helps the intended skill.
There is another limit. A coach needs to explain when a practice rule applies and when ordinary competition rules return. Otherwise, players may carry the wrong habits into a real match. They also need time to practise without the extra restriction. This allows them to decide for themselves when a pass, a shot or a change of position is useful.
After a practice game, the best question may therefore be “What did that rule make you notice?” rather than simply “Who won?” An answer based on a specific moment can show whether the task served its purpose. Temporary rules are useful tools when they help players understand the game more deeply and then act with greater independence.
31.Why does the writer begin with the football lesson?
A.To prove that official football rules are useless.
B.To introduce the difference between practice tasks and formal matches.
C.To show that students should never question a teacher.
D.To explain why every game needs more players.
32.What does the underlined word “constraints” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Prizes for winning.
B.Reasons to give up.
C.Reports about teams.
D.Limits on how to play.
33.Which practice rule best matches the purpose of improving communication?
A.Players name a teammate before making a pass.
B.The longest throw earns the highest score.
C.Only the strongest player can touch the ball.
D.Players must stay completely silent.
34.Why should players also practise without the extra restriction?
A.To avoid learning any standard competition rules.
B.To make sure the coach always decides every move.
C.To learn to choose useful actions independently.
D.To show that special practice games never help.
35.Which outline best shows how the passage is organised?
A.A match result → a player’s life → a future competition
B.An example → possible benefits → conditions and limits → a conclusion
C.A scientific discovery → an experiment → numerical results
D.A complaint about sport → three unrelated stories → a warning
A team at an international school sports camp may include students who do not share a first language. They may know the same sport but use different words for its movements. ____36____ Good communication therefore needs a little planning.
Begin with a few short words that everyone understands. Agree on what each word means before the game starts. ____37____ A warning cannot help if two players understand it in opposite ways.
Gestures can be useful too, especially in a noisy sports hall. A captain might raise a hand to ask the group to gather. ____38____ A movement that seems obvious to one person may be unfamiliar to another.
Do not check understanding only by asking “Do you understand?” Some players may say yes because they feel embarrassed. ____39____ Their response can show whether the message has really been understood.
Finally, give the system time to become familiar. Use the same words and gestures in a short practice before relying on them in a match. ____40____ The aim is not perfect pronunciation, but a team that can respond together.
A.However, the team must agree on the gesture’s meaning first.
B.A longer list of difficult words will always solve every problem.
C.For instance, choose one simple call for stopping or changing direction.
D.This gives members a chance to notice and correct misunderstandings.
E.As a result, a familiar instruction may not be clear to every player.
F.Instead, ask them to show the action or explain the plan in their own words.

A sports crowd often expresses excitement through noise. Goalball, a Paralympic team sport for athletes with visual impairments (视力障碍), asks spectators to support the game in a different way. Understanding its equipment helps explain why.
Each team has three players on court. They try to send a ball into the opposite goal and use their bodies to block the other team’s attempts. The ball contains bells, allowing players to follow its movement by listening. Raised lines on the court give them information about their position through touch.
Players have different levels of vision. To make the competition fair, they all wear eyeshades Thus, a player with some remaining sight cannot use that advantage during the match. The eyeshades and the sound of the ball work together to make the sport possible.
Because hearing is so important, spectators must remain silent while play is taking place. This does not mean they are uninterested. They are helping the players receive the information they need. The crowd can cheer when a goal is scored, then must be ready to become quiet again for play.
Goalball shows that support does not have only one form. A thoughtful spectator asks what allows the athletes to compete well. Sometimes the most helpful contribution is not a louder voice, but the ability to listen and wait.
Adapted from information provided by IBSA and the Singapore National Paralympic Council.
46.How many players from each team are on court?

4.since 1996与still teaches us today说明教学经历持续至今,用现在完成时has taught。
5.one another意为彼此、互相;depend on one another符合队员相互依靠的语境。each other虽也表示互相,但空后为another,不能填each。
6.At the moment表示此刻;主语our group作为一个整体处理,用is preparing。
7.ask sb. to do sth.

Event year
Registered runners
Finishers
Money received
Last year
160
132
¥3,200
This year
180
150

B

C
【答案】31.B 32.D 33.A 34.C 35.B
【答案】36.E 37.C 38.A 39.F 40.D

______________________________________________________________________________
47.What two features help players locate the ball and their own position?

48.Why do all the players wear eyeshades?
______________________________________________________________________________
49.When must the spectators remain silent?
______________________________________________________________________________
50.What lesson about supporting athletes can you learn from the passage?
______________________________________________________________________________
46.Three players.
47.The bells inside the ball and the raised lines on the court.
48.To make the competition fair for players with different levels of vision.
49.While play is taking place.
50.We should support athletes in ways that help them compete, such as staying quiet when they need to hear the ball. (Answers may vary.)
46.第二段开头“Each team has three players on court”直接说明上场人数。
At a youth weightlifting event, the c____51____ stood beside the warm-up area and reminded his young athlete to follow their plan. Her first two attempts were unsuccessful, but she kept a positive a____52____ and prepared for the last one. When she finally lifted the weight, the other athletes offered their c____53____. She did not win a m____54____ to wear around her neck, yet her successful final attempt meant a great deal to her. 51.coach 52.attitude 53.congratulations 54.medal 55.hard
55.work hard for progress表示为进步努力,hard为副词修饰work;hardly意为几乎不,不符合语意。
Our class has a small sports book club. Since the beginning of this term, we ____56____ (read) two books about athletes who continued working through difficult periods. Last Thursday, while we ____57____ (discuss) one player’s choices, our teacher asked us to look beyond the final medal count.
One book described how an athlete returned to regular training after a long break. She could not immediately perform as well ____58____ before. Instead of expecting success overnight, she set small goals and asked her teammates for help. Her story reminded us that progress often depends on ____59____ (patient) as well as effort.
Next week, each group ____60____ (present) one idea from the books and explain how it could help our own school teams. We will use examples from the texts, so our comments will be based on what we have actually read.
56.have read 57.were discussing 58.as 59.patience 60.will present / is going to present / is presenting
56.Since the beginning of this term连接过去起点与现在,用现在完成时。主语we为复数,填have read;read的过去分词仍写作read。
58.as well as before中前一个as已给出,此处构成as+副词well+as的同级比较,意为像以前一样好,填as。
60.Next week指向将来;主语each group为单数,可填will present或is going to present。

Yours,
Li Hua
【语言提示】form teams of four四人组队;consider both sides考虑双方立场;depend on clear reasons依据清晰理由;have a chance to speak有机会发言。
The activity will help us understand respect because we must consider both sides before explaining a decision.
