Beatrice De Lavalette developed a passion for horse-riding when she turned 3. However, in the spring of 2016, 17-year- old De Lavalette was waiting for a flight when she got hit by a bombing at Brussels airport. Along with serious burns, De Lavalette lost both legs below the knee. Yet she said if it weren’t for the event, she wouldn’t be the person to join in the Paralympic Games(残奥会) in Tokyo.
Getting back in the saddle(马鞍) was no easy work because of her injuries. However, five months after the bombing, thanks to her courage, determination-and further treatment and training---that’s exactly where she was. “I had no muscle, I was just skin and bones, so being back on the saddle with no sense of balance was really uncomfortable. But with time, I was able to build up the muscle and work on my balance,” she said.
Unsurprisingly, De Lavalette was depressed as she tried to come to make peace with her injuries. She got lots of help and encouragement from her family, friends and the doctors, but she still couldn’t pick herself up. She cried a lot in the hospital until an unexpected visitor, her beloved horse, DeeDee, turned things around for her. “DeeDee saved my life,” Beatrice said. Adjusting to her disabled body was, in many ways, like having to learn to ride all over again. And the Paralympics offered a perfect chance to show her hard-earned skills. “I can’t change what happened, but I can still achieve my dream. As I have said many times, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. What else is there to say? There are no ‘What ifs’. I have a new life in front of me,” Beatrice said, “What’s important is that I’m alive and I feel that I will do something great with my life. ” We’d say that she already has.
4. What happened to Beatrice when she was 17?
A. She learned to ride.
B. She ran into an air crash.
C. She got injured in a bombing.
D. She participated in the Paralympics.
5. What played a key role in helping Beatrice back to riding?
A. Parents’ love. B. Doctors’ care. C. DeeDee’s company.
D. Friends’ encouragement.
6. What was Beatrice’s difficulty in training?
A. Lack of friendship. B. Loss of balance. C. Great physical pains. D. Continuous depression.
7. What can we learn from Beatrice’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Time is a good heal.
B. Hard work pays off.
C. Attitude makes a difference.
D. Failure is the mother of success.

Research from King’s College London has shown that visiting an art gallery and looking at artwork can lower stress and may even improve your body’s natural defences.
To explore the physical effects of viewing art, scientists invited 50 UK volunteers between 18 and 40 years old to take part. They were split into two groups. One group saw original masterpieces by artists such as Van Gogh and Gauguin in the Courtauld Gallery. The other group saw high-quality printed copies of the same paintings in a laboratory setting. Before and after looking at the art, each person gave a saliva (唾液) sample. During the 20-minute session, they also wore research watches that tracked their heart rate and skin temperature.
The findings were striking. For those viewing real art in the gallery, levels of the stress hormones (荷尔蒙) levels fell by 22%. In contrast, the lab group’s levels only dropped by 8%. Additionally, some chemicals in the body that rise with stress and can harm long-term health decreased significantly among gallery visitors — by about 30% and 28% for the two key types measured. There was almost no change in the lab group. This indicates that experiencing original art in person can calm the body’s stress systems more effectively.
“From a scientific perspective, the most exciting part is that art positively influenced three body systems at once: immunity (免疫力), hormones, and the nervous system,” said Dr. Tony Woods, the study’s lead author. “This is a unique result that truly surprised us.”
Although there is a long history that art has always been connected to feeling better emotionally, this study now offers solid evidence that it benefits physical health too. So if you’re looking for a healthy and relaxing activity this weekend, you might want to plan a trip to your local art museum.
8. Why did researchers set up two different viewing environments?
A. To attract more public attention.
B. To identify which art style is more relaxing.
C. To see if the setting changes art’s physical effect.
D. To compare the popularity of originals and copies.
9. What do the numbers 22% and 8% primarily indicate?
A. The stress reduction in different settings.
B. The improvement in art appreciation skills.
C. The time spent viewing different artworks.
D. The age difference between the two groups.
10. What surprised the researchers most according to Dr. Tony Woods?
A. The volunteers’ strong interest in classic art.
B. The immediate drop in the volunteers’ heart rates.
C. The big difference between gallery and lab results.
D. The impact of art on multiple body systems.
11. What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. The general history of art therapy. B. The potential limitations of the study.
C. A comparison of emotional problems. D. A practical application of the finding.
D
Micro plastics — plastic particles smaller than five millimeters — have quietly become one of the planet’s most widespread pollutants. First noticed floating in the oceans, they have since been detected in table salt, drinking water, farmland soil, and even in human blood. Scientists estimate that an average person may swallow about five grams of plastic every week — roughly the weight of a credit card.
Where do they come from? Some break off from larger items: bags, bottles and packaging that slowly crack apart in sunlight. Others are manufactured directly — tiny spheres added to face cleansers or shed from synthetic clothes with every wash. A single load of laundry can release up to 700, 000 microfibers, many of which are small enough to slip through water treatment systems and end up in rivers and seas.
Recent findings have made the problem even harder to ignore. In one experiment, a single plastic tea bag, emptied into water heated to 95°C, released around eleven billion micro plastic particles. And yet, when it comes to human health, researchers urge caution rather than panic: we know the particles are inside us, but their long-term effects remain largely uncertain. “The honest answer,” says one toxicologist, “is that we are studying a moving target.”
Meanwhile, the war on plastic is shifting from beaches to checkout counters. Dozens of countries have banned single-use plastic bags, and some supermarkets have replaced plastic wrapping with paper or compostable materials. Such measures help, but experts stress that individuals matter too: choosing refillable bottles, washing synthetic clothes less often, and refusing unnecessary packaging all reduce the flood at its source.
The uncomfortable truth is that plastic, invented for its durability, has done its job too well. The question is no longer whether we can live without plastic — it is whether our planet can survive with it.
12. What does the underlined word “detected” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Discussed. B. Discovered. C. Dissolved. D. Destroyed.
13. Why does the author mention “a credit card” in paragraph 1?
A. To show how much plastic humans may take in weekly.
B. To prove that credit cards are made of plastic.
C. To compare plastic with other everyday materials.
D. To warn people against the risks of paying by card.
14. What can be inferred about the health effects of micro plastics?
A. They have been proven to cause serious diseases.
B. Scientists consider them completely harmless.
C. Much remains unknown and research is ongoing.
D. Only tea drinkers need to worry about them.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Micro plastics: Small Particles, Big Problem B. The Invention of a Wonder Material
C. Tea Bags: An Unexpected Danger D. Say Goodbye to Plastic Bags

A Day of Adventure
I always looked up to my sister, Lily, who was ten years older than me. Growing up, she was my hero and companion. Every weekend, she would take me on exciting adventures. Whether it was exploring the nearby woods or visiting the local zoo, our weekends were filled with laughter and joy. Little did I know that one of our outings would become a memorable lesson in kindness and bravery.
When I was five, a crucial moment in our relationship occurred: Lily learned how to ride a bicycle. “I can do this!” she exclaimed (大声说) one sunny Saturday morning. With her newly acquired skills, she decided to take me on a bike ride to the nearby park. The sun shone brightly in a clear blue sky, and a gentle wind swept through the leaves, creating a perfect day for an adventure. Lily packed a colorful backpack with my favorite snacks — “Chocolate cookies, sweets, and don’t forget your toy dinosaur!” — and added my beloved toy for company.
As we set off, I felt a mix of excitement and curiosity. Lily’s laughter filled the air as she rode the bike, her long hair flowing in the wind. I couldn’t help but join her joy, singing silly songs at the top of my lungs. “Twinkle, twinkle, little star!” I sang, my voice echoing in the quiet neighborhood. The world felt peaceful and alive, and I was certain that nothing could ruin this perfect day.
However, as we approached a sharp turn, the unexpected happened. Just as we were about to turn, a motorcycle sped by, and a young man, later known as Jake, rushed past us. “Whoa!” Lily shouted. Still mastering her cycling skills, she reacted quickly to avoid a crash, but in doing so, she lost her balance. In a heart-stopping moment, we fell off the bike and collapsed to the ground, the bike crashing beside us. The impact was sudden, and a sharp pain shot through my leg. I let out a loud cry, tears streaming down my cheeks.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Lily, in shock and panic, rushed to my side.

Jake then offered to take us on his motorcycle to a nearby hospital.

【答案】4. C 5. C 6. B 7. C

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. D

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“For those viewing real art in the gallery, levels of the stress hormones (荷尔蒙) levels fell by 22%. In contrast, the lab group’s levels only dropped by 8%”.(对于那些在画廊里观看真实艺术品的人来说,压力荷尔蒙水平下降了22%。相比之下,实验室组的水平只下降了8%)”可知,数字22%和8%主要表明的是不同环境下的压力减少情况。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“From a scientific perspective, the most exciting part is that art positively influenced three body systems at once: immunity, hormones, and the nervous system,” said Dr. Tony Woods, the study’s lead author. “This is a unique result that truly surprised us.”(该研究的主要作者托尼·伍兹博士说:“从科学的角度来看,最令人兴奋的是艺术同时对三个身体系统产生了积极影响:免疫系统、荷尔蒙系统和神经系统。这是一个真正让我们感到惊讶的独特结果”)”可知,最让研究人员惊讶的是艺术对多个身体系统的影响。

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. A

How to Remember What You Read
Reading is important, but the next important step is to make sure that you remember what you’ve read! Memory is sometimes a tricky thing.
You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images may fly right out of your head. ___16___
Are you confused?
If the plot, character, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won’t be able to remember what you read. ___17___ If you don’t understand what you’re reading, how would you remember it? There are a few things you can do — use a dictionary; look up the difficult words; consult a teacher...
Are you connected?
Does a character remind you of a friend? Does the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away. ___18___ How willing are you to make the connections happen?
Read it; hear it; be it!
Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some characters into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the stories of the characters. He’d make faces in the mirror and change his voice for each character. ___19___
How often do you read? If you read frequently, you’ll likely have an easier time remembering what you’re reading and what you’ve read. ___20___ As you make reading a regular part of your life, you’ll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text much better. You’ll learn to enjoy literature as you remember what you read!
A. What’s your motivation?
B. Practice makes perfect.
C. It’s a bit like reading a foreign language.
D. Marking helps you remember what you read.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Lily, in shock and panic, rushed to my side. Her own leg was badly hurt as well, but her focus was on me. “I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry!” she repeated, pulling me into her arms. Just then, the motorcycle rider stopped and approached us. His eyes widened with concern as he assessed the situation. “I’m really sorry! Are you both okay?” he asked, kneeling beside us. Noticing our injuries, he quickly introduced himself as Jake and suggested we go to the hospital to treat our wounds.
Jake then offered to take us on his motorcycle to a nearby hospital. A nurse cleaned our scratches and wrapped our legs while Jake entertained me with stories about his own childhood adventures. The kind man stayed with us, ensuring we both received the care we needed. After our treatment, we left the hospital and waved goodbye to Jake, who even promised to check on us later. This experience turned out to be a mix of joy and pain, but I learned that with love and support we could face anything together.
