Do you want to make a good living from writing? Here is the good news. There are several platforms you can upload your writing to. Meanwhile, you can interact with other writers, build a community and make some money.
Medium: https://medium.com/
Medium was launched in 2012 by Edgar Smith. You can join Medium for free, but you can also become a subscriber (订阅用户) for $5 a month which allows you access to more contents and do more. Medium supports a diverse range of writing including, book-length pieces, poetry, essays, and multimedia presentations. Simon Whaley joined the platform in 2021, firstly as a reader, and then paid the monthly fee. “The subscription model means there are no advertisements,” he says. “Within four months, my articles were covering my monthly subscription. Between 2022 and 2024, my articles often made over $200 per month.”
Substack: https://substack.com/
This platform gained popularity very quickly after it was founded in 2017, seen as a way for writers to build a personal brand (个人品牌).
Nick Winney has been using Substack for over a year and discovered many like-minded writers.
Wattpad: https: //www.wattpad.com
This platform is all about stories. It’s been around for a while since 2006. It covers all sorts of writing, from romance (爱情故事), to fantasy (奇幻小说), to historical.
Eliza-Mari Janse started using Wattpad in 2017 and it was the first place where she shared her work. “Wattpad is a wonderful place to be creative, unique and have complete freedom. Write professionally, just for fun or just try it out. You don’t have a deadline.”
1. Which of the following is TRUE about Medium?
A. It was set up earlier than the other two platforms.
B. Most writers can make over $200 per month.
C. It only allows users to post short articles and poems.
D. A monthly subscription costs $5.
2. Who has the shortest user experience of one of the platforms?
A. Edgar Smith. B. Simon Whaley.
C. Nick Winney. D. Eliza-Mari Janse.
3. If you are fond of reading stories, which link will you click?
A. https://www.wattpad.com/ B. https://www.storyshare.com/
C. https://medium.com/ D. https://substack.com/
B
For much of the year, the main attraction of Zhuji, a city in Zhejiang Province, is its status as the birthplace of Xi Shi, a woman of great classical beauty who lived 2,500 years ago. But since 2023, tens of thousands have been to Zhuji around the new year for the Xi Shi Music Festival. More than 133,000 visitors stayed overnight during this year’s event, a 29% increase over the one in 2025.
China is enjoying a concert boom (火爆). Last year the box-office intake (票房收入) from performances totalled 62 billion yuan, up from 20 billion in 2019, according to figures from the China Association of Performing Arts. Not only are there more offerings, but better ones, too. At a Mayday concert, members of the rock band from Taiwan, China, popped up as giant avatars (虚拟形象) on a huge 3D screen. They also wowed the crowd on a bus, on which a stage was set up, as it circled its way around the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing.
What is striking is that almost everywhere else consumers have been reluctant to spend since the pandemic (流行病), yet concerts have roared back to life in China. Visitors lift the economies of the spots they go to as they splash out (挥霍) on food and accommodation. The Performing Arts Association suggests that one yuan spent on concert tickets can bring nearly seven yuan of additional spending.
Some fans are particularly hardcore. Last year Ms. Wang, a 35-year-old, followed Mayday to different cities to watch their shows, together with her husband, spending 20,000 yuan on tickets and the same again on flights and hotels. Going to shows is one of the things that she looks forward to most.
Chinese commentary has come to call this kind of spending “emotional consumption (情绪消费)”: paying for experiences to comfort the soul, rather than collecting material possessions. This kind of spending is rising in spite of, or perhaps even because of, a discouraging economic situation.
4. What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?
A. Better stages have been set up for artistic purpose
B. Zhuji is visited all year round for Xi Shi Music Festival.
C. Concerts are bringing more economic benefits than ever before.
D. Art performance is gaining increasing popularity around the world.
5. What does the underlined word “hardcore” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Devoted. B. Fortunate. C. Emotional. D. Experienced.
6. According to the last paragraph, which of the following might lead to the concert boom?
A. Energetic youth. B. Weak economy.
C. Wealthy audience. D. Social development.
7. What might be the best title of the passage?
A. Music Festival: A Booming New Year Tradition
B. Music Festival: A Technological Wonder on Stage
C. China’s Concert Boom: Spending on Experiences
D. China’s Concert Boom: Lifesaver of the Art Industry
C
The 21st century has witnessed incomparable progress in space exploration. China’s Chang’e-6 mission, landing on the moon’s far side in 2024, collected rock samples containing rare helium-3 (氦-3), which could drive carbon-free (无碳的) applications in power plants, lunar energy networks, and space travel, with minimal radioactive waste and abundant lunar resources. Meanwhile, NASA’s Artemis program is constructing a lunar base to test technologies like 3D-printed habitats and water recycling systems, essential for future Mars colonization (火星定居). Private firms also contribute: SpaceX’s Starship reduced launch costs by 70%, enabling universities to deploy mini-satellites for tracking climate change.
A milestone discovery came from Mars. NASA’s Perseverance rover confirmed vast water ice deposits (大量水冰储量) beneath the planet’ s surface — critical for producing oxygen and rocket fuel. However, long-term space habitation faces hurdles (障碍). Exposure to radiation in space during the 6-month Mars journey could damage astronauts’ DNA, increasing cancer risks. Additionally, over 900,000 pieces of space debris (太空碎片) larger than 1cm orbit Earth, threatening satellites. In 2025, Japan’s JAXA launched a laser-equipped satellite to vaporize (汽化) small debris, while the EU’s ClearSpace-2 mission will use robotic nets to capture large pieces.
Global cooperation accelerates breakthroughs. The China-Russia Lunar Research Station, planned for 2035, will study lunar soil for farming experiments. India’s Aditya-L1 satellite operates with NASA to monitor solar storms that damage Earth’s power networks. Public engagement grows through initiatives like NASA’s “Mars VR,” allowing students to virtually explore landscapes of Mars and analyze geological (地质的) data.
Critics (批评者) question the costs — $150 billion spent annually worldwide — arguing funds should address poverty or climate crises. Yet, space research has boosted life-saving technologies: MRI scanners generated from Apollo-era imaging systems, and water purification (净化) methods used in deserts came from spacecraft recycling. As humanity eyes star-to-star travel, balancing exploration with Earth’s needs will define our universal heritage.
8. What is helium-3’s potential use?
A. Building lunar habitats. B. Clean energy.
C. Medical imaging. D. Plant farming.
9. Why is Mars’ water ice important?
A. It helps recycle water in space stations. B. It prevents radiation.
C. It makes the soil suitable for farming. D. It aids space missions.
10. How does Japan deal with space debris?
A. Using robotic nets. B. Recycling materials.
C. Capturing used satellites. D. Vaporizing them with lasers.
11. How is the text organized?
A. Question — explanation — suggestion. B. Theory — practice — evaluation.
C. Achievements — challenges — reflections. D. Situation — response — result.
D
NASA has broken its own record by transmitting ultra-clear video over a distance of 31 million kilometres from deep space. The video wasn’t of distant heavenly bodies or spacecraft, but of a cat called Taters running after the light from a laser (激光) pointer.
The 15 seconds of the video was transmitted from NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment, which is being conducted on the spacecraft named Psyche that was launched in October. The DSOC experiment will send high-speed test data to the Earth during a two-year run, and is part of NASA’s long-term plan to use lasers rather than radios to transmit information from space.
The video of Taters was shot and uploaded to the spacecraft before launch. Abhijit Biswas at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) says that Taters — a JPL employee’s pet — was chosen for the first transmission over that distance because one of the first television test broadcasts also featured a cat — the cartoon Felix the Cat. The film also shows Psyche’s orbital path and technical information about the laser and its data transmission rate.
The video took 101 seconds to travel from the spacecraft to the Earth. The message was received by equipment at the Hale Telescope at Palomar, before being transmitted over the internet to JPL in southern California, where the video was played in real time. That data rate makes DSOC faster than most domestic broadband connections.
“DSOC is really a proof that this can be done,” says Biswas. He says longer distances than the latest test should be possible in future. One issue is ensuring the laser light is precisely directed so it hits the receiving station. “It’s a very narrow beam (光束); at the distance that Psyche is right now, it is only a few hundred kilometres wide by the time it reaches the Earth,” says Biswas.
12. What aspect of the video transmission is discussed in paragraph two?
A. Its whole procedure. B. Its working principle.
C. Its background information. D. Its evaluation and reviews.
13. What can be inferred about the video?
A. The video only shows a cat chasing the laser light.
B. The video featured a cat to honor early communication tests.
C. The video was shot 31 million kilometres away from the Earth.
D. The video message was transmitted by JPL in southern California.
14. What is Biswas’ attitude towards the future of deep space communication?
A. Optimistic. B. Unconcerned. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
15. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce the ambition of NASA’s Psyche mission.
B. To predict the future of deep space laser transmission.
C. To compare the differences between laser and radio communication.
D. To report a landmark breakthrough in deep space laser communication.

Every night as the whole family fell asleep, Catalina would slide from home to the Cerro Tololo observatory (天文台). Papa was the mechanic (修理工) of the observatory, but during the day Papa would not allow her to get closer to the telescopes there. Only at night, Catalina was allowed in with the permission of the night staff.
Catalina loved helping to service the grand telescopes, the eyes that looked out into the universe. She wanted badly to be an astronomer someday. Adults never took her dream seriously. Even her father laughed, “Maybe you’ll be hired to clean the offices.”
One day in library, Catalina was reading a plant journal when she stopped at the picture of an unusual white flower. “It’s called wild carrot. “ A Spanish astronomer, who she saw several times in the observatory, stood behind her. “Pretty, isn’t it? I’ve always liked that flower, because it looks like a galaxy.”
“A spiral galaxy (漩涡星系),” she whispered. Blond eyebrows climbed the scientist’s forehead. “Indeed. And what is your name, young lady?” he asked.
”I’m Catalina Solis.”
“Eduardo Solis’s daughter? The mechanic?”
“Yes.” She gave a look at him. “I want to be an astronomer when I grow up.”
He laughed kindly, no longer meeting her eyes, and patted her on the shoulder. “Yes, of course, my dear. Work hard in school, and it could happen.”
One evening, Catalina eye scanned the top of the observatory as usual. Suddenly she noticed the angle of the one-meter telescope was unusual. The telescope was pointed down, lower than she had ever seen it. Catalina learned from I Papa how dangerous it would be. If left like it was, the telescope would move past its limit and be damaged. So without hesitation she got inside the observatory.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答
She saw the Spanish scientist buried in work there.

To her surprise, he handed her a notebook and asked, “Would you like to help me record the data from the telescope?”Overwhelmed by excitement, Catalina nodded and began to assist the astronomer. The night passed quickly as they worked together, recording and analyzing the observations. Catalina couldn’t believe that she was working with a real astronomer, contributing to the scientific research she had always dreamed of.
The scientist’s words meant a lot to her. “Work hard in school, and it could happen.” Catalina took these words to heart and worked diligently every day. She was determined to become an astronomer one day and nothing would stop her. Years passed, and after graduating from college, Catalina applied for a job at the Cerro Tololo observatory. To her delight, she was hired as an assistant astronomer, working alongside the same scientist who had encouraged her all those years ago. Finally, her childhood dream had become a reality, and Catalina knew that nothing was impossible as long as she kept chasing her dreams.
