At just 14 years old, Ryan from the US, attracts a lot of eyes with a beach clean-up activity. On April 20, 2024, he and many volunteers had an activity to pick up rubbish from five beaches along the Southern California coast. He has collected about 2 million bottles from beaches, lakes and rivers since he was 2 years old.
“The rubbish ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Ryan said. “I really can’t endure the pollution any more. Picking up a piece of rubbish may save a turtle’s (海龟) life.”
Ryan first learned about the influence of pollution at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC太平洋海洋哺乳动物中心). Watching the videos of ocean pollution there encouraged him to think about what he could do to help save them.
From a young age, he has developed a love for recycling. He kept collecting rubbish and bottles for a long time. One day, Ryan knew from the workers in PMMC that saving sea animals needed money. “Why not sell the bottles?” he thought. In 2017, Ryan gave a $10,000 check (支票) to the PMMC after picking up 50,000 pounds of rubbish and more than 200,000 recyclable bottles.
Ryan has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about what kids can do for the protection of sea animals. He said, “It’s meaningful. I’ll keep on doing it.”

Feel down? Hug a tree!
Recently, many young people have turned to trees to help with their stress (压力). Although it sounds strange, there’s science behind the act of tree hugging.
The “biophilia hypothesis (亲生命假说)” tells us the reason. It was from the US scientist Edward Wilson in 1984. He said that humans are born to love being with other living things. Humans’ love for nature is in our DNA. This idea helps to explain why people prefer green, natural places to city views. It’s also one of the reasons why people love cute pets.
Some studies have found out why tree-hugging can help with our health. A study in 2021 reported that the activity can increase the level of oxytocin (催产素). It is related to our feelings. The higher the level of oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can lead to an increase in the level of oxytocin in our bodies.
What’s more, when a person is angry, sad or very nervous, more cortisol (皮质醇) comes out. Hugging trees helps cut cortisol production, which makes us feel better.
Although the activity is helpful to us, it’s important to keep in mind that we shouldn’t hurt nature while doing it. Many small animals live in the trees, and they are too small to be seen. So remember to hug trees softly and gently, just like how you hug a friend!
36. What does the sentence “Humans’ love for nature is in our DNA.” mean?
A. DNA is important to humans. B. Humans prefer cities to nature.
C. Humans are born to like nature. D. Humans love studying DNA.
37. How may we feel after hugging trees for 21 seconds?
A. Calm. B. Nervous. C. Sad. D. Frightened.
38. Which may show the relationship between negative (负面的) feelings and the level of cortisol?
(x = negative feelings, y = the level of cortisol)
A. B. C. D.
39. Which paragraph tells us how to hug a tree?
A. The second paragraph. B. The fourth paragraph.
C. The fifth paragraph. D. The last paragraph.
40. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Tree-hugging: Love for Nature. B. Tree-hugging: Treatment of Stress.
C. Tree-hugging: Useful or Useless? D. Tree-hugging: Strange or Common?
36. C 37. A 38. A 39. D 40. B
根据文章第三段“He said that humans are born to love being with other living things. Humans’ love for nature is in our DNA.”
根据文章第四段“The higher the level of oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can lead to an increase in the level of oxytocin in our bodies.”
根据文章第五段“when a person is angry, sad or very nervous, more cortisol (皮质醇) comes out.”
根据文章最后一段“So remember to hug trees softly and gently, just like how you hug a friend!”

31. When did Ryan begin his collecting of bottles?
A. In 2024. B. When he was 14 years old.

33. Why did Ryan decide to save sea animals?
A. Because of the videos of ocean pollution. B. Because of the influence of some volunteers.
C. Because of an invitation of the PMMC. D. Because of a love for collecting bottles.

A. He sold the bottles to raise money for the PMMC.
B. He worked in the PMMC.

D. He studies the effects of pollution at the PMMC.
35. What is Ryan like according to the passage?

Feel down?
