What are clouds
A cloud is made of water drops in the sky. There are many kinds of clouds, which are an important part of Earth’s weather.
How do clouds form?
The sky can be full of water. But most of the time you can’t see the water. 1 They have turned into a gas called water vapor. As the water vapor goes higher in the sky, the air gets cooler. The cooler air causes the water droplets to start to stick to things like bits of ice.
What are some kinds of clouds?
2 One way is by where they are found in the sky. Some clouds are high up in the sky. Low clouds form closer to Earth’s surface. Middle clouds are found between low and high clouds. Another way clouds are named is by their shape. Cirrus clouds are high clouds. They look like feathers. 3 These clouds look like huge cotton balls in the sky. Stratus clouds are low clouds. They cover the sky like bed sheets.
4
Most of the water in clouds is in very small droplets. The droplets are so light that they float in the air. Sometimes those droplets join with other droplets. Then they turn into larger drops. When that happens, gravity causes them to fall to Earth. We call the falling water drops “rain”.
Why do scientists study clouds?
Clouds are important for many reasons. Rain and snow are two of those reasons. At night, clouds reflect heat and keep the ground warmer. During the day, clouds make shade that can keep us cooler. 5
A. What causes rain?
B. Why are clouds white?
C. Cumulus clouds are middle clouds.
D. Clouds get their names in two ways.
E. The drops of water are too small to see.
F. However, other planets have clouds that are not made of water.
G. Studying clouds helps scientists better understand Earth’s weather.

(2025·北京·学业水平合格考)If you text often, you likely have a “texting style”. Do you often use emojis? Or what about using correct punctuation (标点)? What do all these texting habits say about you? To help you understand yourself, here are some texting styles that can tell you a lot about your personality.
Do you always use emojis when you’re texting? You’re most likely someone who is open to showing your emotions and is truthful. 1 To make sure the other person doesn’t get the wrong idea about your messages, you make sure to express the tone of messages with an emoji, which can be often used as effective signals in modern social communication.
If you like to respond in one-word texts like a quick “Good”, then you most likely have a more reserved personality, and aren’t as open with your true thoughts and feelings. Because you are not as open with your emotions in texts, you may not care how lengthy your response is. But be careful. 2
Do you value punctuation and grammar in your writing? This love of grammar goes straight into your texts as well as your emails. This seems like a great thing, doesn’t it? But in texting, people seem to think otherwise. Simply placing a period at the end of sentences in texts can make you come across as untrustworthy to others. 3 With this texting style, you are rooted in logic and always pay attention to the little details.
Are your texts lengthy and thoughtful? 4 Similar to someone who texts with perfect grammar, you are a thoughtful and detail-oriented person, who enjoys deep conversations and likes things that are controlled and stable.
5 Which texting personality are you? Are you a mix of several types? It’s important to note that everyone has different ways of texting in different situations. Everyone texts their colleagues in a different style from their family or their friends. If you ever think someone may have left you an unclear or rude text, it’s better to just ask them in-person what they meant or what they were feeling.
A. Do you relate to any of these texting personalities?
B. Do you know that you and your friends may have different styles?
C. Such texts may also be rated as less sincere than those that do not.
D. You may be the busy type who doesn’t have a lot of time to respond.
E. You’re the type of person who understands the importance of context.
F. You want others to know how you’re feeling when you’re using a message.
G. If you’re texting someone with a different text personality, they may view your text as negative.

(2026年1月·浙江·高考)During your initial reading of material, do you ever go back and reread sentences or paragraphs? Is it because the material is too difficult to comprehend on the first reading or because you are asleep? 1 You are napping (打盹) or daydreaming. Halfway down the page you realize that you have no idea what you have read. 2 Thus, you go back and reread, not because you did not understand, but because you were not paying attention. This type of rereading is called regression.
Napping and daydreaming are habits caused by lack of involvement with the material. Be demanding on yourself and expect 100 percent attention to the task. Engage your mind. Visualize the incoming ideas, and relate the new material to what you already know. 3 If your mind is truly occupied with the text, you will not be able to think about Friday night or where to go on Saturday.
Regression is a crutch (拐杖) that allows you to make up for wasted time. First of all, become aware of when and why you are regressing. 4 Say, “OK. I missed that paragraph because I was thinking of something else, but I’m going to keep on going and start paying close attention.”
5 Good readers who monitor their own comprehension use it in the reading process. However, regressing because your mind was asleep is a waste of time.
A. Both are to blame.
B. Probably the latter is true.
C. Don’t just read the words; think the ideas.
D. Spend a few minutes reading the material aloud.
E. Your eyes were engaged, but your mind was not.
F. Then, start denying yourself the right in order to break the habit.
G. Rereading because you did not understand is a reasonable fix-up strategy.

(2025·广东·学业水平合格考)Have you ever set a goal for yourself, like getting fit, making honor roll, or being picked for a team? Like lots of people, maybe you started out doing great, but then lost some of that drive and had trouble getting motivated again. 1 It all comes down to good planning, realistic expectations, and a stick-to-it attitude. Here’s what you need to do:
First, know your goal. Start by writing down your major goal. For example, “I want to make honor roll”, or “I want to get fit enough to make the cross-country team,” or even, “I want to play in the Olympics” are all major goals because they’re the final thing the goal setter wants to see happen. 2 That’s how people get things done. You just have to remember that the bigger the goal, the more work it takes to get there.
Make it specific. It’s easier to plan for and master a specific goal than an unclear one. 3 That’s pretty unclear. Make it specific by defining what you want to achieve, why you want to get fit, and by when. This helps you make a plan to reach your goal.
4 People often abandon their goals because their expectations are unreasonable. Part of staying motivated is being realistic about what you can achieve within the timeframe you’ve planned. Competing on the Olympic ski team is a workable goal if you are 15 and already a star skier. But if you’re 18 and only just taking your first lesson, time isn’t exactly on your side.
Break it down. Making any change takes self-discipline. You need to pay constant attention so you don’t get sidetracked. 5 For example, let’s say you want to run a marathon. If it’s February and the marathon is in August, that’s a realistic timeframe to prepare. Start by planning to run 2 miles and work up gradually to the distance you need.
A. Make it realistic.
B. It’s OK to dream big.
C. One way to make this easier is to break a big goal into small steps.
D. Let’s say your goal is to get fit.
E. So how do you stay motivated and on track with your goal?

(2025年1月·浙江·高考)One of the most common mistakes in communication is trying to do too much. 1 There’s no value in delivering any kind of communication, whether written, spoken, formal, or informal, if the message doesn’t come across clearly. Being clear and brief — while maintaining interest and including everything your listeners need to know — is a high-level communication skill.
Here are some tips worth following in order to communicate more effectively.
Keep your audience in mind.
Your audience will naturally be more interested and engaged when you tailor your communications to their interests. 2 This will engage their desire to understand and interact with the information.
Don’t use ten words when one will do.
Even the most engaged and committed audience will eventually get bored. Keeping your message simple and clear will make it easier for people to understand. 3 However, they’re hearing it for the first time. Keep it simple.
4
If you’ve ever worked as an instructor, manager, trainer or coach, you’ll know that there are few better ways to learn new information than to teach it. Ask the audience to contribute their ideas or to take a role in explaining new concepts and policies to others. Allow them to lead discussions and meetings to develop their communication skills.
Consider the best method to deliver your message.
If the information you’re communicating isn’t urgent, consider sending an email. Written communication will give your audience more time to review it, think it over, and follow up with questions. 5
Building effective communication skills takes time, but the effects are worth the effort.
A. Be patient.
B. Get the audience involved.
C. The best messages are often simple.
D. Speak directly to what matters to them.
E. You may be surprised by what your listeners offer.
F. It will also give them a handy record to refer back to.
G. As the speaker, you already know what you’re going to say.

(2024·辽宁·学业水平合格考)We use plastics (塑料) to make many things, from medical equipment to TVs to food packaging. 1 . These plastics then break down into smaller pieces that can last for centuries. This causes problems, especially for the world’s oceans. Scientists are working to solve the problems. But in the meantime, here are four things you can do to reduce plastic waste now.
Quit using plastic bags. Instead, take your own reusable shopping bag to the store. People use a trillion (1,000 billion) plastic bags worldwide every year. About 10 percent are used in the United States alone. That’s almost one bag per American per day. Meanwhile, a Dane uses four single-use bags per year on average. In 1993, Denmark was the first country to place a tax (税) on plastic bags. 2
Skip the straw (吸管). Today, around 8.3 billion plastic straws pollute the world’s beaches. So when you order a drink, you can say no to the straw. 3 . In 2018, Seattle became the first major US city to stop using plastic straws, and many other cities are set to follow its example. 4 .Buy bar soap instead of liquid soap in plastic containers. Don’t buy fruit or vegetables on plastic packaging. In the United Kingdom, leaders are calling for supermarkets to have plastic-free areas. They also want to tax plastic take-out containers.
Recycle (reuse). 5 , but it is possible to recycle most plastic bottles and milk or juice boxes. Today, Norway recycles 97 percent of its plastic bottles. How? Machines at most supermarkets take the bottles and give a refund of up to 32 cents per bottle.
A. Avoid plastic packaging
B. Set up plastic-free areas
C. We can’t recycle all plastic products
D. We can’t stop recycling plastic bottles
E. You can also bring your own reusable one
F. At the end of their useful life, most plastic products are thrown away
G. Today, other countries either make customers pay for plastic bags, or have banned them completely

(2025·广东·学业水平合格考)Plant-based ice creams have become a good summer choice these days. 1 If you doubt it, you may go to a local store and count all the ice creams that do not use cows’ milk. 2 Actually, plant-based ice cream sales have a 300% increase since 2018.
3 One is that people care about their health. Plant-based ice creams contain less fat, so they are healthier. Environmental protection is also a reason. Since these ice creams are made from different kinds of plant milk, less water and energy are required in the production.
People used to think that plant-based ice creams tasted less delicious and less creamy. 4 Thanks to recent technological innovations (创新), plant-based ice creams of new flavors are introduced. They taste just like the creamy and smooth ice creams made from cows’ milk. As you can tell, the quality is really there, and people are becoming more and more interested in the new flavors.
With the growing popularity, the plant-based ice cream industry is making more money. Years ago, only a few companies produced plant-based ice creams. 5
A. But it’s no longer the case.
B. The results might surprise you.
C. They are more popular now than ever before.
D. There are several reasons for the sharp growth.
E. Now more ice cream makers have entered the business.

(2024年1月·学业水平合格考)In the past few years, online learning has become a significant part of the university and college experience. 1 But are all online courses created equal? How can you be sure that digital learning is right for you? 2 We interviewed students and professors to get their advice about online courses.
The most obvious advantage of online learning is that you can study anywhere and anytime. 3 “I think a point that many people lose sight of is how easy it can be to fall behind schedule,” says graduate student Amanda Bindman. Before choosing to study online, consider whether you’re a self-motivated learner and if the material seems interesting enough to keep you going.
The tip that comes up most often is simple: build online courses into your weekly schedule, just like what you would do with in person courses. 4 He noted that his online students usually end up with lower grades. It is so easy to let an online course slide, but your grades will suffer as a result. Be sure to schedule set times to watch your lectures, read materials and contribute to online discussion boards.
5 A social connection is often a big part of learning. There are things you can do to ease this problem. Jessica Pink, an undergraduate student, suggests taking online courses with a friend, so you can motivate each other to stay on track. You can also find students on the class discussion board to organize a study group, or schedule in-person meeting s with your professor to discuss course concepts.
A. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t deadlines.
B. Your motivation should be your main concern.
C. Do you know that online courses are also part of your education?
D. Professor Alex Davidson teaches the same course in person and online.
E. The chief complaint about online courses is that they lack human interaction.
F. If you take an online course, what can you do to ensure the best possible grade?
G. A survey found that 29 percent of college students registered for online courses.

(2025·辽宁·学业水平合格考)Often it seems like technology is everywhere. Computers and smartphones are at the center of almost everything we do. 1 . We text our friends during the day, sleep with our devices by our beds, and check our messages as soon as we wake up.
According to Dr. Amber Case, in the future, technology will no longer be interrupting (打断) us all of the time. 2 an idea first developed by scientist Mark Weiser in the 1970s. In his view, calm technology works quietly but continuously. We know it is there, but we don’t focus on it. According to Mark, the best technology should not be noticed and let you live your life. 3 . Do you have a smoke alarm in your house? That smoke alarm is always there, checking the air for smoke and quietly keeping you safe. It only reminds you it’s there when you’ve burned your bread! Or there may be lights in your home or school that are sensitive to movement. When somebody passes in front of their sensor (传感器), the lights turn on. You don’t think about this type of technology until you see the light go on. Even a microwave is an example of calm technology. You’re not standing at the microwave heating your food; the microwave is doing it for you. 4 .
In the future, Amber imagines that our houses will use calm technology to open the curtains for us in the morning, to turn down the heat when we leave, or even to choose the best music for us. 5 , our house will respond by turning on the lights and music, setting the heater to a comfortable temperature, and perhaps even starting to prepare our dinner!
A. The minute we walk in the door
B. As soon as we go out of the house
C. Instead, we will use calm technology
D. They’re continuously demanding our attention
E. The microwave will make food ready for you in a minute
F. You don’t think about its work until you hear the microwave’s beeping noise
G. We already use many different types of calm technology in our everyday lives

下文 “To make sure the other person doesn’t get the wrong idea about your messages, you make sure to express the tone of messages with an emoji, which can be often used as effective signals in modern social communication. (为了确保对方不会误解你的信息,你一定要用表情符号来表达信息的语气,这种表情符号在现代社会交际中经常被用作有效的信号) ”提到为了让对方准确理解你的信息,会用表情符号来表达信息的语气,表达自己的感受,这说明要让收到信息的人知道你所表达的感受,所以选项F“你想让别人知道你发信息时的感受”符合语境,故选F。
(2)题解析:
上文“If you like to respond in one-word texts like a quick “Good”, then you most likely have a more reserved personality, and aren’t as open with your true thoughts and feelings. (如果你喜欢像“好”这样一个词的文本回复,那么你很可能有一个相对更保守的个性,而不是公开表达你的真实想法和感受) ”以及“But be careful. (但是你要小心)”提到,你个性保守,回复简单,但是要小心。那么下文会提到你要小心的原因,所以选项G“如果你发短信给另一个个性不同的人,他们可能会认为你的短信是消极的”也就是别人可能并不认为你是保守而是消极,故选G。
(3)题解析:
上文“Simply placing a period at the end of sentences in texts can make you come across as untrustworthy to others. (简单地在文本信息中的句子末尾用一个句号,你会发现别人会认为你不可信)”提到发信息不注意标点会让人觉得你不可信。选项C“这类文本也可能被评为不如那些没有标点的真诚”,是对上文内容的进一步说明,都提到了标点的问题,选项中less sincere对应上文untrustworthy,故选C。
(4)题解析:

B 2. E 3. C 4. F 5. G

根据上文“Is it because the material is too difficult to comprehend on the first reading or because you are asleep? (是因为材料太难,第一次读不懂,还是因为你打瞌睡了?)”以及下文“You are napping (打盹) or daydreaming. (你在打盹或做白日梦。)”可知,此处应承接上文的两个疑问,明确更可能是后者(打瞌睡)的情况,B选项“Probably the latter is true. (可能后者是对的。)”中的the latter指代上文because you are asleep,与下文的打盹、做白日梦相呼应,符合语境。故选B项。
根据上文“Halfway down the page you realize that you have no idea what you have read. (读到页面中间,你意识到自己根本不知道读了什么。)”以及下文“Thus, you go back and reread, not because you did not understand, but because you were not paying attention. (因此,你回去重读,不是因为你不懂,而是因为你没有集中注意力。)”可知,此处应体现眼睛在看但大脑没专注的状态,E选项“Your eyes were engaged, but your mind was not. (你的眼睛在看,但你的大脑没有投入。)”既解释了为什么不知道读了什么,又为下文“没集中注意力”的原因做铺垫,符合语境。故选E项。
(3)题解析:
根据上文“Engage your mind. Visualize the incoming ideas, and relate the new material to what you already know. (集中注意力。想象即将接收的观点,并将新材料与你已有的知识联系起来。)”以及下文“If your mind is truly occupied with the text, you will not be able to think about Friday night or where to go on Saturday. (如果你的大脑真的专注于文本,你就不会去想周五晚上或周六去哪里。)”可知,此处应强调阅读时要思考观点而非只看文字,C选项“Don’t just read the words; think the ideas. (不要只看文字,要思考其中的观点。)”与上文Engage your mind和下文mind is truly occupied with the text相呼应,符合语境。故选C项。
根据上文“First of all, become aware of when and why you are regressing. (首先,要意识到自己何时以及为何会回读。)”以及下文“Say, “OK. I missed that paragraph because I was thinking of something else, but I’m going to keep on going and start paying close attention.” (比如,“好的。我因为想别的事情错过了那一段,但我会继续读下去,并开始集中注意力。”)”可知,此处应体现意识到回读原因后,要拒绝回读以打破习惯,F选项“Then, start denying yourself the right in order to break the habit. (然后,开始拒绝自己回读的权利,以打破这个习惯。)”中的Then承接上文First of all, denying yourself the right与下文keep on going相呼应,符合语境。故选F项。
根据下文“Good readers who monitor their own comprehension use it in the reading process. However, regressing because your mind was asleep is a waste of time. (善于监控自己理解程度的优秀读者会在阅读过程中使用它。然而,因为打瞌睡而回读是浪费时间。)”可知,此处应区分两种回读,强调因不懂而回读是合理的,G选项“Rereading because you did not understand is a reasonable fix-up strategy. (因为不懂而回读是一种合理的补救策略。)”中的Rereading because you did not understand与下文regressing because your mind was asleep形成对比,reasonable fix-up strategy与下文use it in the reading process相呼应,符合语境。故选G项。

E 2. B 3. D 4. A 5. C
前文“Like lots of people, may be you started out doing great, but then lost some of that drive and had trouble getting motivated again. (像很多人一样,也许你一开始做得很好,但后来失去了一些动力,很难再次获得动力.)”描述“人们设定目标后容易失去动力”的现象,后文“It all comes down to good planning, realistic expectations, and a stick-to-it attitude. (这一切都归结为良好的计划。现实的期望和坚持的态度.)”提出解决方法(好计划、现实预期等。),E项“那么,你是如何保持动力并朝着目标前进的呢?”是承上启下的关键问句,引出下文的解决方案,故选E。
(2)题解析:
前文“For example, “I want to make honor roll”, or “I want to get fit enough to make the cross-country team,” or even, “I want to play in the Olympics” are all major goals because they’re the final thing the goal setter wants to see happen. (例如,“我想上荣誉榜”,或者“我想变得足够健康,可以参加越野队”,甚至“我想参加奥运会”都是主要目标,因为它们是目标设定者最希望看到的事情。)”列举“进荣誉榜、参加奥运会”等宏大目标,后文“That’s how people get things done. You just have to remember that the bigger the goal, the more work it takes to get there. (这就是人们做事的方式。你只需要记住,目标越大,需要付出的努力就越多。)”强调“目标越大,付出越多”。选项B“有远大的梦想是可以的。”与前文举例呼应,且“dream big”对应“Olympics”等大目标,后文补充说明实现难度。故选B。
(3)题解析:
前文“Make it specific. It’s easier to plan for and master a specific goal than an unclear one. (具体一点。制定和掌握一个明确的目标比制定一个不明确的目标更容易。)”提出“目标需具体化”,后文“That’s pretty unclear. Make it specific by defining what you want to achieve, why you want to get fit, and by when. This helps you make a plan to reach your goal. (这很不清楚。明确你想要达到的目标,为什么要健身,以及什么时候要健身。这有助于你制定一个计划来实现你的目标。)”批评“这不够清晰”并举例修正,故空处应是提及一个不够具体的目标,选项D“假设你的目标是健身。”符合语境,引出后文对“模糊目标”的批评,D项中“get fit”和后文“get fit”呼应。故选D。
(4)题解析:
后文“People often abandon their goals because their expectations are unreasonable. Part of staying motivated is being realistic about what you can achieve within the timeframe you’ve planned. Competing on the Olympic ski team is a workable goal if you are 15 and already a star skier. But if you’re 18 and only just taking your first lesson, time isn’t exactly on your side. 故选A。
本段主题句“Break it down. (把它分解。)”强调“分解目标”,后文“For example, let’s say you want to run a marathon. If it’s February and the marathon is in August, that’s a realistic timeframe to prepare. Start by planning to run 2 miles and work up gradually to the distance you need. (例如,假设你想跑马拉松。如果是在2月,而马拉松在8月,这是一个现实的准备时间框架。从计划跑2英里开始,逐渐增加到你需要的距离。)”以“马拉松训练”为例说明分阶段准备。选项C“有一种方法可以让这个目标更容易实现,那就是把一个大目标分解成一个个小步骤。”与本段主题一致,且后文“从2英里逐渐增加”直接例证该观点。故选C。

C 2. D 3. G 4. B 5. F

上文“One of the most common mistakes in communication is trying to do too much.(沟通中最常见的错误之一就是试图做得太多)”指出“做得太多”是沟通中易犯的错误,C选项“The best messages are often simple.(最好的信息往往是简单的)”承接上文,明确正确沟通方法,即不要“做得太多”,要避免复杂,追求简单,句中“simple”与上文“too much”形成对比。故选C项。
上文“Your audience will naturally be more interested and engaged when you tailor your communications to their interests.(当你根据受众的兴趣来调整你的沟通内容时,他们自然会更感兴趣、更投入)”强调要迎合受众兴趣,D选项“Speak directly to what matters to them.(直接谈论对他们重要的事情)”进一步说明了具体做法,即直接针对受众关心的事情进行交流,与上文逻辑一致。故选D项。
下文“However, they’re hearing it for the first time.(然而,他们是第一次听到这些)”与设空句之间是转折关系。G选项“As the speaker, you already know what you’re going to say.(作为演讲者,你已经知道你要说什么了)”与下文构成转折,演讲者自己熟悉内容,但听众是初次接触,同时,句中“what you’re going to say”与下文中指示代词“it”构成指代关系,上下文逻辑连贯。故选G项。
下文“If you’ve ever worked as an instructor, manager, trainer or coach, you’ll know that there are few better ways to learn new information than to teach it. Ask the audience to contribute their ideas or to take a role in explaining new concepts and policies to others.(如果你曾经当过导师、经理、培训师或教练,你就会知道,没有比教别人更好的学习新信息的方法了。让听众贡献他们的想法,或者让他们扮演向他人解释新概念和政策的角色)”建议让受众参与其中,B选项“Get the audience involved.(让受众参与进来)”能概括这部分内容,适合作段首小标题。故选B项。
(5)题解析:
上文“If the information you’re communicating isn’t urgent, consider sending an email. Written communication will give your audience more time to review it, think it over, and follow up with questions.(如果你传达的信息不紧急,考虑发电子邮件。书面沟通会给你的受众更多时间来复习、思考,并跟进提问)”说明了发邮件这种书面沟通的好处,F选项“It will also give them a handy record to refer back to.(它还会给他们提供一个方便查阅的记录)”进一步补充了发邮件的另一个好处,与上文逻辑紧密。故选F项。

F 2. G 3. E 4. A 5. C

根据空后“Buy bar soap instead of liquid soap in plastic containers. Don’t buy fruit or vegetables on plastic packaging. In the United Kingdom, leaders are calling for supermarkets to have plastic-free areas.(购买条形肥皂,而不是塑料容器中的洗手液。不要购买塑料包装的水果和蔬菜。在英国,领导人呼吁超市设立无塑料区。)”可知,空后提到不要买塑料包装的东西,故A项“避免塑料包装”符合本段标题。故选A项。
根据本段标题“Recycle (reuse).(回收(再利用))”可知,本段主要介绍要回收再利用,且根据空后“but it is possible to recycle most plastic bottles and milk or juice boxes.(但是可以回收大多数塑料瓶和牛奶或者果汁盒。)”
